How Hydrophobic Hydration Destabilizes Surfactant Micelles at Low Temperature: A Coarse-Grained Simulation Study

Micelles are self-assembled aggregates of amphiphilic surfactant molecules that are important in a variety of applications, including drug delivery, detergency, and catalysis. It is known that the micellization process is driven by the same physiochemical forces that drive protein folding, aggregation, and biological membrane self-assembly. Nevertheless, the molecular details of how micelle stability changes in water at low temperature are not fully clear. We develop and use a coarse-grained model to investigate how the interplay between nonionic surfactants and the surrounding water at the nanoscale affects the stability of micelles at high and low temperatures. Simulations of preformed C₁₂E₅ micelles in explicit water at a range of temperatures reveal the existence of two distinct surfactant conformations within the micelle, a bent structure and an extended structure, the latter being more prevalent at low temperature. Favorable interactions of the surfactant with more ordered solvation water stabilizes the extended configuration, allowing nanoscale wetting of the dry, hydrophobic core of the micelle, leading to the micelle breaking. Taken together, our coarse-grained simulations unravel how energetic and structural changes of the surfactant and the surrounding water destabilize micelles at low temperature, which is a direct consequence of the weakened hydrophobicity. Our approach thus provides an effective mean for extracting the molecular-level changes during hydrophobicity-driven destabilization of molecular self-assembly, which is important in a wide range of fields, including biology, polymer science, and nanotechnology.

Determination of liquid-liquid critical point composition using 90^{∘} laser light scattering

Despite over a century of characterization efforts, liquid-liquid critical point compositions are difficult to identify with good accuracy. Reported values vary up to 10% for even well-studied systems. Here, a technique is presented for high-precision determination of the critical composition of a partially miscible binary liquid system. Ninety-degree laser light-scattering intensities from single-phase samples are analyzed using an equation derived from nonclassical power laws and the pseudospinodal approximation. Results are reported for four liquid-liquid systems (aniline + hexane, isobutyric acid + water, methanol + cyclohexane, and methanol + carbon disulfide). Compared to other methods, the 90^{∘} light-scattering approach has a strong dependence on composition near the critical point, is less affected by temperature fluctuations, and is insensitive to the presence of trace impurities in the samples. Critical compositions found with 90^{∘} light scattering are precise to the parts-per-thousand level and show long-term reproducibility.

Relaxation rate in the critical dynamics of the micellar isobutoxyethanol-water system with lower consolute point

For the isobutoxyethanol-water mixture of critical composition acoustical scaling function measurements have been performed at frequencies between 200 kHz and 3 MHz. Using the relaxation rates of concentration fluctuations as resulting from dynamic light scattering and shear viscosity measurements, the acoustical data can be well represented by the Bhattacharjee-Ferrell empirical scaling function. The theoretically predicted scaled half attenuation frequency Omega(BF)(1/2)=2.1 follows from the experiments. However, the adiabatic coupling constant, derived from the amplitude of the Bhattacharjee-Ferrell critical term, displays an unreliably strong temperature dependence. It is shown that this dependence upon temperature likely reflects a hidden low-frequency and low amplitude relaxation term in the acoustical spectra of the mixture of critical composition.

Effects of nonionic surfactant C12E5 on the cooperative dynamics of water

A dielectric relaxation study of binary mixtures of nonionic surfactant C12E5 + water has been made as a function of temperature in the isotropic micellar, lamellar, and hexagonal regions of the phase diagram. Two dielectric dispersion steps were found and could be assigned to the intermolecular cooperative dynamics of water at the micellar interface and in the bulk water domains. A quantitative analysis is given. The relaxation amplitudes were used to determine effective hydration numbers. The activation energies of water relaxation were calculated from the relaxation times. The data indicate weaker surfactant-water and water-water interactions near the micellar interface compared to those of bulk liquid water. Further analysis revealed the presence of water clusters large enough to show a cooperative relaxation mode even at high surfactant concentrations. However, the relaxation time of this mode is larger compared to that of pure water. This points out the importance of confinement effects on water dynamics.

Critical structure factor in using systems

We perform a large-scale Monte Carlo simulation of the three-dimensional Ising model on simple cubic lattices of size L(3) with L=128 and 256. We determine the corresponding structure factor (Fourier transform of the two-point function) and compare it with several approximations and with experimental results. We also compute the turbidity as a function of the momentum of the incoming radiation, focusing in particular on the deviations from the Ornstein-Zernike expression of Puglielli and Ford.
