Numerical assessment of the performance of a scalp-implantable antenna: Effects of head anatomy and dielectric parameters

Design and Modeling of Ultra-Compact Wideband Implantable Antenna for Wireless ISM Band

This paper proposes a wideband ultra-compact implantable antenna for a wireless body area network (WBAN). The proposed patch antenna works in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands. The proposed patch antenna with an ultra-compact size (5 × 5 × 0.26 mm³) was designed with 29% wide bandwidth (about 670 MHz). This wide bandwidth makes the antenna unaffected by implantation in different human body parts. The miniaturization process passed many steps by adding many slots with different shapes in the radiating element as well as in the ground plane. A 50 Ω coaxial feeding excites the antenna to maintain matching and low power loss. The specific absorption rate (SAR) was calculated for health considerations. The result was within the standard limits of IEEE organizations and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNRP). The antenna was tested in tissues with multiple layers (up to seven layers) and at various depths (up to 29 mm). The link margin was calculated, and the proposed antenna enables 100 Kbps of data to be transferred over a distance of 20 m and approximately 1 Mbps over a distance of 7 m. The proposed antenna was fabricated and tested. The measured S₁₁ parameters and the simulated results using the Computer Simulation Technology (CST Studio) simulator were in good agreement.

Development of a Coherent Model for Radiometric Core Body Temperature Sensing

This paper examines the utility of a wideband, physics-based model to determine human core body or brain temperature via microwave radiometry. Pennes's bioheat equation is applied to a six-layer human head model to generate the expected layered temperature profile during the development of a fever. The resulting temperature profile is fed into the forward electromagnetic (EM) model to determine the emitted brightness temperature at various points in time. To accurately retrieve physical temperature via radiometry, the utilized model must incorporate population variation statistics and cover a wide frequency band. The effect of human population variation on emitted brightness temperature is studied by varying the relevant thermal and EM parameters, and brightness temperature emissions are simulated from 0.1 MHz to 10 GHz. A Monte Carlo simulation combined with literature-derived statistical distributions for the thermal and EM parameters is performed to analyze population-level variation in resulting brightness temperature. Variation in thermal parameters affects the offset of the resulting brightness temperature signature, while EM parameter variation shifts the key maxima and minima of the signature. The layering of high and low permittivity layers creates these key maxima and minima via wave interference. This study is one of the first to apply a coherent model to and the first to examine the effect of population-representative variable distributions on radiometry for core temperature measurement. These results better inform the development of an on-body radiometer useful for core body temperature measurement across the human population.

Wireless Wearables and Implants: A Dosimetry Review

Wireless wearable and implantable devices are continuing to grow in popularity, and as this growth occurs, so too does the need to consider the safety of such devices. Wearable and implantable devices require the transmitting and receiving of electromagnetic waves near and through the body, which at high enough exposure levels may damage proximate tissues. The specific absorption rate (SAR) is the quantity commonly used to enumerate exposure levels, and various national and international organizations have defined regulations limiting exposure to ensure safe operation. In this paper, we comprehensively review dosimetric studies reported in the literature up to the year 2019 for wearables and implants. We discuss antenna designs for wearables and implants as they relate to SAR values and field and thermal distributions in tissue, present designs that have made steps to reduce SAR, and then review SAR considerations as they relate to applied devices. As compared with previous review papers, this paper is the first review to focus on dosimetry aspects relative to wearable and implantable devices. Wrap-Around Wearable Coils for Seamless Monitoring of Joint Flexion

OBJECTIVE

We introduce and validate a new class of wearable coils that seamlessly monitor joint flexion in the individual's natural environment while overcoming shortcomings in state-of-the-art.

METHODS

Our approach relies on Faraday's law of induction and employs wrap-around transmit and receive coils that get angularly misaligned as the joint flexes.

RESULTS

Simulation and in vitro measurement results for both copper and e-thread coils are in excellent agreement. As a proof-of-concept, a cylindrical arm model is considered and feasibility of monitoring the 0°-130° range of motion is confirmed. The operation frequency of 34 MHz is identified as optimal, bringing forward reduced power requirements, enhanced angular resolution, and extreme robustness to tissue dielectric property variations. Performance benchmarking versus state-of-the-art inertial measurement units shows equivalent or superior performance, particularly for flexion angles greater than 20°. Design guidelines and safety considerations are also explored.

CONCLUSION

Contrary to "gold-standard" camera-based motion capture, the reported approach is not restricted to contrived environments. Concurrently, it does not suffer from integration drift (unlike inertial measurement units), it does not require line-of-sight (unlike time-of-flight sensors), and it does not restrict natural joint movement (unlike bending sensors).

SIGNIFICANCE

The reported approach is envisioned to be seamlessly integrated into garments and, eventually, redefine the way joint flexion is monitored at present. This promises unprecedented opportunities for rehabilitation, sports, gestural interaction, and more.

Implanted miniaturized antenna for brain computer interface applications: analysis and design

Implantable Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are designed to provide real-time control signals for prosthetic devices, study brain function, and/or restore sensory information lost as a result of injury or disease. Using Radio Frequency (RF) to wirelessly power a BCI could widely extend the number of applications and increase chronic in-vivo viability. However, due to the limited size and the electromagnetic loss of human brain tissues, implanted miniaturized antennas suffer low radiation efficiency. This work presents simulations, analysis and designs of implanted antennas for a wireless implantable RF-powered brain computer interface application. The results show that thin (on the order of 100 micrometers thickness) biocompatible insulating layers can significantly impact the antenna performance. The proper selection of the dielectric properties of the biocompatible insulating layers and the implantation position inside human brain tissues can facilitate efficient RF power reception by the implanted antenna. While the results show that the effects of the human head shape on implanted antenna performance is somewhat negligible, the constitutive properties of the brain tissues surrounding the implanted antenna can significantly impact the electrical characteristics (input impedance, and operational frequency) of the implanted antenna. Three miniaturized antenna designs are simulated and demonstrate that maximum RF power of up to 1.8 milli-Watts can be received at 2 GHz when the antenna implanted around the dura, without violating the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) limits.

Influence of the anisotropic mechanical properties of the skull in low-intensity focused ultrasound towards neuromodulation of the brain

Lately, neuromodulation of the brain is considered one of the promising applications of ultrasound technology in which low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) is used noninvasively to excite or inhibit neuronal activity. In LIFU, one of critical barriers in the propagation of ultrasound wave is the skull, which is known to be highly anisotropic mechanically: this affects the ultrasound focusing, thereby neuromodulation effects. This study aims to investigate the influence of the anisotropic properties of the skull on the LIFU via finite element head models incorporating the anisotropic properties of the skull. We have examined the pressure and stress distributions within the head in LIFU. Our results show that though most of the pressure that reaches to the brain is due to the longitudinal wave propagation through the skull, the normal stress in the transverse direction of the wave propagation has the main role to control the pressure profile inside the brain more than the shear stress. The results also show that the anisotropic properties of skull contribute in broadening the focal zone in comparison to that of the isotropic skull.

Implantable and ingestible medical devices with wireless telemetry functionalities: a review of current status and challenges

Wireless medical telemetry permits the measurement of physiological signals at a distance through wireless technologies. One of the latest applications is in the field of implantable and ingestible medical devices (IIMDs) with integrated antennas for wireless radiofrequency (RF) communication (telemetry) with exterior monitoring/control equipment. Implantable medical devices (MDs) perform an expanding variety of diagnostic and therapeutic functions, while ingestible MDs receive significant attention in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Design of such wireless IIMD telemetry systems is highly intriguing and deals with issues related to: operation frequency selection, electronics and powering, antenna design and performance, and modeling of the wireless channel. In this paper, we attempt to comparatively review the current status and challenges of IIMDs with wireless telemetry functionalities. Full solutions of commercial IIMDs are also recorded. The objective is to provide a comprehensive reference for scientists and developers in the field, while indicating directions for future research.
