Evaluation of a training package to teach pairing procedures

Pairing is a commonly recommended practice used to build rapport and create positive therapeutic environments. However, there are limited evaluations of training procedures to teach pairing skills to direct-care staff. The purpose of the present study was to formalize and improve the efficiency of the training process for the initial stages of pairing using video modeling with embedded voice-over instructions plus performance feedback. Participants included three dyads of behavior technicians and children with autism. The results indicated that the training package increased the consistency of pairing implementation. These outcomes were maintained in a novel setting and for up to 4 weeks following training. We also measured relevant child behaviors such as joint attention, engagement, indices of happiness, and calm. Specific areas for future research are described.

Using the ADDIE Model of Instructional Design to Create Programming for Comprehensive ABA Treatment

ABA research abounds with articles on increasing or decreasing a small set of behaviors. These articles fit nicely within the framework of Focused ABA Treatment in which the goal of treatment centers on only a few behaviors. However, many behavioral practitioners spend most of their time developing Comprehensive ABA Treatment in which a large number of behaviors are systematically changed across multiple developmental domains. Few resources are available to help in designing and implementing such programming. This article presents a model from the field of instructional design for the development of comprehensive programming. Applying the ADDIE model-Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate-the article identifies a consistent process to follow, critical actions to take, and helpful resources to use when developing comprehensive programming for individuals with autism.

A Cultural Generalization: An Effective Training for Staff Integrity on DTT in the Application of the PEAK in Brazil

Promoting the Emergence of Advanced Knowledge (PEAK) direct training is an evidence-based curriculum with extensive research. Treatment integrity is one of the critical components of an effective treatment. In developing countries where training opportunities are scarce, providing precise training poses a challenge. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of behavioral skills training (BST) role-play to train three staff members to implement the PEAK-DT language curriculum, using discrete trial teaching (DTT) with three learners with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Not only did the staff members implement the programs with high treatment integrity, but the learners also improved their performance on targeted skills. In addition, this study considered maintenance and generalization of the skills learned. Overall, data show that the BST role-play was successful as the staff members enhanced the skills of three learners with autism.
