The Use of Instructive Feedback to Promote Emergent Tact and Intraverbal Control: A Replication

Instructive feedback (IF) involves incorporating additional acquisition targets into skill-acquisition programs. A recent study by Frampton and Shillingsburg (2020) found that IF led to emergent verbal operants with two elementary-aged children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The current study replicated Frampton and Shillingsburg with two children with ASD. Therapists conducted sessions of mastered listener-by-name trials (e.g., “Show me otter,” with pictures of otter, dog, and elephant) with IF statements for features of the target stimuli (e.g., “It lives in rivers.”) embedded during the consequence portion of the trial. We evaluated the acquisition of secondary targets and emergent responses using a concurrent multiple baseline across sets design. We observed increased correct responding for secondary targets and emergent responses for all three sets of stimuli with one participant. The other participant emitted correct responses for secondary targets and emergent operants with the first set but not with the other two sets of stimuli. Results suggested that IF can lead to emergent verbal operants, but the extent of emergence may be idiosyncratic.

Using GraphPad Prism's Heat Maps for Efficient, Fine-Grained Analyses of Single-Case Data

Behavior analysts sometimes consider various forms of data analysis when making clinical decisions and when attempting to illuminate interesting relations in existing datasets. For example, an ongoing plot of when problem behavior occurs across days and times can yield useful information regarding the function(s) of problem behavior. In a post-hoc analysis, a plot of within-session error patterns can reveal which variables may be contributing to faulty stimulus control. Such analyses can be burdensome to conduct manually (e.g., changing the color of individual data points based on error type), and more efficient methods (e.g., using conditional formatting in Microsoft Excel data tables) might not be conducive for producing publication-quality figures. In the present article, we provide an overview of how behavior analysts can use GraphPad Prism's heat-map feature to efficiently populate fine-grained graphs of behavior with data points that are coded automatically (e.g., with categorical colors or gradients). Implications for clinical utility and research production are discussed.

Effects of differential observing responses on observational learning across multiple contingencies

Whether a child with autism spectrum disorder will exhibit observational learning may depend on their attention to and the stimulus modalities of the observed contingency. We used multiple-probe and repeated-acquisition designs to test observational learning across a diverse set of contingencies, which included hidden edible, hidden toy, hidden video, tact, receptive identification, and intraverbal contingencies. During preteaching, 2 children with autism spectrum disorder showed observational learning with some contingencies. After learning to engage in differential observing responses for observed behaviors and consequences with the hidden-video contingency, 1 child showed generalization of observational learning with receptive identification and intraverbals. Neither child showed generalization with the tact contingency. Thus, teaching was initiated with the tact contingency, which led to generalization of observational learning with tacts. The efficacy of teaching differential observing responses over observational learning was demonstrated. Inconsistent observational learning across contingencies suggests scientist-practitioners should assess observational learning across a variety of contingencies.

Stimulus Control Research and Practice: Considerations of Stimulus Disparity and Salience for Discrimination Training

Stimulus control plays a prominent role in behavior-analytic service delivery, as many discrimination skills are necessary for daily interactions. Clarification and standardization of terminology are necessary for the advancement of research and practice on stimulus control. The purpose of the present article is to provide an overview of stimulus control and discrimination training as they relate to the disparity and salience of stimuli. An overview and examples of stimulus disparity and stimulus salience are provided, followed by recommendations for efficacious service delivery.
