Abstract
Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) with patch angioplasty is the most effective treatment for carotid artery stenosis. However, the use of existing vascular patches is often associated with thrombosis, restenosis, calcification and other complications. Objective: to develop biodegradable patches for arterial reconstruction, containing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) or arginyl-glycyl-aspartic acid (RGD), and comparatively evaluate their biocompatibility and efficacy in in vitro experiments and during preclinical trials in large laboratory animal models.Materials and methods. Biodegradable patches, made from a mixture of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3- hydroxyvalerate (PHBV) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), were fabricated by electrospinning and modified with VEGF or the peptide sequence RGD in different configurations. In in vitro experiments, the surface structure, physicomechanical and hemocompatibility properties were evaluated. In in vivo experiments, we evaluated the effectiveness of the developed vascular patches for 6 months after implantation into the carotid artery of 12 sheep. The quality of remodeling was assessed using histological and immunofluorescence studies of explanted specimens.Results. The PHBV/PCL/VEGF patches had physicomechanical characteristics closer to those of native vessels and their biofunctionalization method resulted in the smallest drop in strength characteristics compared with their unmodified PHBV/PCL counterparts. Modification with RGD peptides reduced the strength of the polymer patches by a factor of 2 without affecting their stress-strain behavior. Incorporation of VEGF into polymer fibers reduced platelet aggregation upon contact with the surface of the PHBV/PCL/VEGF patches and did not increase erythrocyte hemolysis. At month 6 of implantation into the carotid artery of sheep, the PHBV/PCL/ VEGF patches formed a complete newly formed vascular tissue without signs of associated inflammation and calcification. This indicates the high efficiency of the VEGF incorporated into the patch. In contrast, the patches modified with different configurations of RGD peptides combined the presence of neointimal hyperplasia and chronic granulomatous inflammation present in the patch wall and developed during bioresorption of the polymer scaffold.Conclusion. PHBV/PCL/VEGF patches have better biocompatibility and are more suitable for vascular wall reconstruction than PHBV/PCL/RGD patches.

Abstract
Tissue-engineered vascular grafts are widely tested as a promising substitute for both arterial bypass and replacement surgery. We previously demonstrated that incorporation of VEGF into electrospun tubular scaffolds from poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)/poly(ε-caprolactone) enhances formation of an endothelial cell monolayer. However, an overdose of VEGF can induce tumor-like vasculature; thereby, other bioactive factors are needed to support VEGF-driven endothelialization and successful recruitment of smooth muscle cells. Utilizing emulsion electrospinning, we fabricated one-layer vascular grafts with either VEGF, bFGF, or SDF-1α, and two-layer vascular grafts with VEGF incorporated into the inner layer and bFGF and SDF-1α incorporated into the outer layer with the following structural evaluation, tensile testing, and in vivo testing using a rat abdominal aorta replacement model. The latter graft prototype showed higher primary patency rate. We found that the two-layer structure improved surface topography and mechanical properties of the grafts. Further, the combination of bFGF, SDF-1α, and VEGF improved endothelialization compared with VEGF alone, while bFGF induced a rapid formation of a smooth muscle cell layer. Taken together, these findings show that the two-layer structure and incorporation of bFGF and SDF-1α into the vascular grafts in combination with VEGF provide a higher primary patency and therefore improved in vivo performance.

Abstract
Collagen is a key component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in organs and tissues throughout the body and is used for many tissue engineering applications. Electrospinning of collagen can produce scaffolds in a wide variety of shapes, fiber diameters and porosities to match that of the native ECM. This systematic review aims to pool data from available manuscripts on electrospun collagen and tissue engineering to provide insight into the connection between source material, solvent, crosslinking method and functional outcomes. D-banding was most often observed in electrospun collagen formed using collagen type I isolated from calfskin, often isolated within the laboratory, with short solution solubilization times. All physical and chemical methods of crosslinking utilized imparted resistance to degradation and increased strength. Cytotoxicity was observed at high concentrations of crosslinking agents and when abbreviated rinsing protocols were utilized. Collagen and collagen-based scaffolds were capable of forming engineered tissues in vitro and in vivo with high similarity to the native structures.

Abstract
A nanohybrid formulation of silver‑titanium dioxide nanoparticles/poly(lactic acid) (Ag-TiO2/PLA) was designed for Norfloxacin/Tenoxicam (NOR/TENO) targeted delivery to maximize the bioavailability and minimize the side effects of the drugs. Ag-TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared via Stober method. NOR, TENO and a mixture of NOR/TENO (NT) were loaded onto Ag-TiO2 nanoparticles and coated by PLA via solution casting. The physical interaction between the drugs and carrier was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrated that Ag-TiO2 consists of a cubic phase of Ag with two phases of TiO2 (anatase and brookite). Ag nanoparticle fine spots coated with TiO2 were collected to form spheres averaging at 100 nm in size. In-vitro release behavior of drugs was studied at different pH (5.4, 7.4) and the release of drug from NT/Ag-TiO2/PLA was faster at pH 7.4. Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were used to investigate antibacterial properties of the nanohybrid. Cytotoxicity of the nanohybrid using an MTT assay was studied against different tumor and normal cell lines. It was found that NT/Ag-TiO2/PLA has an excellent cytotoxic effect against various bacterial cells and tumor cell lines. In addition, antioxidant properties of the nanohybrids were tested using ABTS method and the nanohybrid showed moderate antioxidant activity.

Abstract
The fiber obtained by electrospinning technology is a kind of biomaterial with excellent properties, which not only has a unique micro-nanostructure that gives it a large specific surface area and porosity, but also has satisfactory biocompatibility and degradability (if the spinning material used is a degradable polymer). These biomaterials provide a suitable place for cell attachment and proliferation, and can also achieve immobilization. On the other hand, its large porosity and three-dimensional spatial structure show unique blocking properties in drug delivery applications in order to achieve the purpose of slow release or even controlled release. The immobilization effect or blocking effect of these materials is mainly reflected in the hollow or core-shell structure. The purpose of this paper is to understand the application of the electrospun fiber based on biodegradable polymers (aliphatic polyesters) in the biomedical field, especially the immobilization or blocking effect of the electrospun fiber membrane on cells, drugs or enzymes. This paper focuses on the performance of these materials in tissue engineering, wound dressing, drug delivery system, and enzyme immobilization technology. Finally, based on the existing research basis of the electrospun fiber in the biomedical field, a potential research direction in the future is put forward, and few suggestions are also given for the technical problems that urgently need to be solved.

Abstract
This study aimed to fabricate core/sheath-structured composite nanofibers containing cinnamon oil by emulsion electrospinning and to investigate their acaricidal effect on house dust mites as well as their antibacterial and antifungal properties in relation to cinnamon oil concentration in the nanofibers. An oil-in-water emulsion, which comprised cinnamon oil and poly(vinyl alcohol) solution as oil and water phases, respectively, was used to prepare core/sheath-structured nanofibers. The morphology and the inner structure of the electrospun nanofibers were observed by scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Core/sheath-structured nanofibers containing cinnamon oil were successfully prepared by emulsion electrospinning. The composite nanofibers prepared from an emulsion containing 20 wt% of cinnamon oil exhibited a strong acaricidal effect against house dust mites (Dermatophagoides farinae). The composite nanofibers fabricated from an emulsion containing 4.29 wt% of cinnamon oil showed excellent antimicrobial effects against Staphylococcus aureus and a series of fungi that can trigger respiratory- and skin-related diseases. The release profile of cinnamon oil from the core/sheath-structured nanofibers showed a continuous release of functional ingredients over 28 days. Our findings demonstrate that the use of such fibrous structures could be a promising approach for delivering naturally derived bioactive agents in a controlled way.

Abstract
Electrospinning is a versatile method for preparing functional three-dimensional scaffolds. Synthetic and natural polymers have been used to produce micro- and nanofibers that mimic extracellular matrices. Here, we describe the use of emulsion electrospinning to prepare blended fibers capable of hosting aqueous species and releasing them in solution. The existence of an aqueous and a non-aqueous phase allows water-soluble molecules to be introduced without altering the structure and the degradation of the fibers, and means that their release properties under physiological conditions can be controlled. To demonstrate the loading capability and flexibility of the blend, various species were introduced, from magnetic nanoparticles and quantum rods to biological molecules. Cellular studies showed the spontaneous adhesion and alignment of cells along the fibers. Finally, in vivo experiments demonstrated the high biocompatibility and safety of the scaffolds up to 21 days post-implantation.

Abstract
The study was aimed at evaluating the effect of electrospun scaffold containing TGF-β1 on promoting human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) differentiation towards a nucleus pulposus-like phenotype under hypoxia. Two kinds of nanofibrous scaffolds containing TGF-β1 were fabricated using uniaxial electrospinning (Group I) and coaxial electrospinning (Group II). Human MSCs were seeded on both kinds of scaffolds and cultured in a hypoxia chamber (2% O2), and then the scaffolds were characterised. Cell proliferation and differentiation were also evaluated after 3 weeks of cell culture. Results showed that both kinds of scaffolds shared similar diameter distributions and protein release. However, Group I scaffolds were more hydrophilic than that of Group II. Both kinds of scaffolds induced the MSCs to differentiate towards the nucleus pulposus-type phenotype in vitro. In addition, the expression of nucleus pulposus-associated genes (aggrecan, type II collagen, HIF-1α and Sox-9) in Group I increased more than that of Group II. These results indicate that electrospinning nanofibrous scaffolds containing TGF-β1 supports the differentiation of MSCs towards the pulposus-like phenotype in a hypoxia chamber, which would be a more appropriate choice for nucleus pulposus regeneration.

Abstract
Nano/microfibrous polymeric constructs present various inherent advantages, such as highly porous architecture and high surface to volume ratio, making them attractive for tissue engineering purposes. Electrospinning is the most preferred technique for the fabrication of polymeric nanofibrous assemblies that can mimic the physical functions of native extracellular matrix greatly favoring cells attachment and thus influencing their morphology and activities. Different approaches have been developed to apply polymeric microfiber fabrication techniques (e.g. wet-spinning) for the obtainment of scaffolds with a three-dimensional network of micropores suitable for effective cells migration. Progress in additive manufacturing technology has led to the development of complex scaffold's shapes and microfibrous structures with a high degree of automation, good accuracy and reproducibility. Various loading methods, such as direct blending, coaxial electrospinning and microparticles incorporation, are enabling to develop customized strategies for the biofunctionalization of nano/microfibrous scaffolds with a tailored kinetics of release of different bioactive agents, ranging from small molecules, such as antibiotics, to protein drugs, such as growth factors, and even cells. Recent activities on the combination of different processing techniques and loading methods for the obtainment of biofunctionalized polymeric constructs with a complex multiscale structure open new possibilities for the development of biomimetic scaffolds endowed with a hierarchical architecture and a sophisticated release kinetics of different bioactive agents. This review is aimed at summarizing current advances in technologies and methods for manufacturing nano/microfibrous polymeric constructs suitable as tissue engineering scaffolds, and for their combination with different bioactive agents to promote tissue regeneration and therapeutic effects.
