Abstract
Magnesium (Mg2+) plays a crucial role in over 80% of all metabolic functions. It is becoming increasingly apparent that magnesium deficiency (hypomagnesemia) may play an important role in chronic disease. To counteract magnesium deficiency, there is an unmet clinical need to develop new fully characterized, highly bioavailable, and substantially water-soluble magnesium supplements. To this end, triglycine (HG3), a tripeptide of the amino acid glycine, was chosen as a chelating ligand for magnesium, given its natural occurrence and water solubility, and entropically-driven metal binding. Herein, we discuss the synthesis, chemical and physical characterization, and cellular uptake of a magnesium triglycine chelate (MgG3), an octahedral complex with extraordinary water solubility and improved cellular uptake in CaCo-2 cells than select commonly used magnesium supplements.

Abstract
The novel chloride salt of 1-butyl-4-[2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethenyl)]pyridine (1), has been synthesized as the tetrahydrate and its structure and properties elucidated in detail spectroscopically, thermally and structurally, using single crystal X-ray diffraction, linear-polarized solid-state IR-spectroscopy, UV-spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Quantum chemical calculations were performed with a view to supporting and explaining the experimental structural and spectroscopic data. The compound (1) crystallizes in triclinic P1 space group and its unit cell contains two independent 1-butyl-4-[2-(3,5-dimethoxy4-hydroxyphenyl)ethenyl)]pyridinium] cations, differing with respect to the butyl chain torsion angle for which values of 80.0(9) degrees and 173.6(3) degrees are observed. The cations and anions are joined into infinite layers, formed by two different dimers and including solvent molecules. Hydrogen bonds OH...OH(2) (2.814 A), HOH...O(CH(3)) (2.960 A), OH...Cl (2.967 A), HOH...Cl(-) (3.034, 3.188, 3.161 and 3.062 A) and HOH...OH(2) (2.772 A) are observed. For first time in the literature, we are reporting the crystal structure of the dye with the syring-fragment in the molecule. The spectroscopic properties of the novel compound are compared and with those of the corresponding quinoide form (2). Both the forms (1) and (2) are characterized by 21 and 140 nm solvatochromic effects depending of the type of the solvent. The UV-spectroscopic data in solution confirm the formation of classical H-aggregates in polar protic solvent mixture.

Abstract
The linear-dichroic infrared (IR-LD) spectroscopy of oriented solid samples as suspension in nematic liquid crystal have been carried out for experimental IR-band assignment and structural information of 2-{5,5-dimethyl-3-[2-(2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)vinyl]cyclohex-2-enylidene} malononitrile polymorphs. The last data have been compared with known crystallographic ones, thus determining the validity of IR-LD spectral conclusions as well as its possibility to determination of Davydov's splitting effect and separation of pairs of maxima corresponding to non-equivalent molecules included in the unit cell of given compound. The experimental structural and spectroscopic data in our case are supported with theoretical DFT ones, obtaining both the electronic structure and vibrational frequencies in gas phase.

Abstract
A distortion of the aromatic character and stabilization of the imino-form as a result of the protonation of 4-dimethylaminopyridine was established by IR-, UV- and 1H NMR-spectral analysis of 4-diaminopyridinium hydrogensquarate. Quantum chemical calculations were carried out at MP2 and B3LYP levels of theory and a 6-311++G** basis set with a view to determining the changes in geometrical parameters and IR-spectroscopic characteristics resulting from Npy protonation. Linear-dichroic IR-spectroscopy coupled with the orientation techniques of solid samples as liquid crystal suspensions and melted solid polycrystalline films was applied for the identification of the IR-bands, characteristic for the structural fragments of the neutral and imino-form of the pyridine derivative. The spectral results were compared with the structure, obtained by a single crystal X-ray analysis. The salt contains dimmers of hydrogensquarate anions and Npy protonated cations of which the former are stabilized by strong intermolecular OH...O interactions (2.552 angstroms and 143.1(2) degrees). The 4-diaminopyridinium cation interacts with the anion through moderate NH...O bonds (2.729 angstroms and 165.0(0) degrees ). Individual cations are pi-pi stacked with their neighbors at a distance of 3.406 angstroms.

Abstract
Knowledge of the protonation constants of small dipeptide is important, interesting and necessary for complete understanding of the physiochemical behavior of dipeptide. In this study, the protonation constants of some aliphatic dipeptides (Gly-Gly, Gly-Val, Gly-Leu, Gly-Thr, Gly-Phe and Gly-Met) were studied in water and ethanol-water mixtures [20% ethanol-80% water, 40% ethanol-60% water, 60% ethanol-40% water, (v/v)] at 25 +/- 0.1 degrees C under nitrogen atmosphere and ionic strength at 0.10 mol dm(-3) by potentiometry. The constants of the systems were calculated by using BEST computer program, and distribution species diagrams were produced using the SPE computer program. The protonation constants were influenced by changes in solvent composition, and their variations were discussed in terms of solvent and structural properties. The concentration distribution of the various species in ethanol-water mixtures was evaluated.

Abstract
3-Ethylamino-2-(4-nitro-benzoyl)-but-2-enoic acid phenylamide is synthesized, isolated, spectroscopical and structural characterized by means of linear-polarized IR-spectroscopy (IR-LD) of oriented solids as a colloidal suspension in nematic liquid crystal. The experimental IR-band assignment and structural information are supported by quantum chemical calculations at MP2 and B3LYP level of theory and 6-311++G** basis set. The geometry is characterized by two inramolecular hydrogen bonds of NH...O=C with bond lengths of 2.589 and 3.449 angstroms. The NHO angles are 142.1(3) degrees and 125.8(4) degrees , respectively. A transoide configuration of amide fragments is predicted with a torsion NH-C=O angle of 150.6 degrees . Phenyl fragments are mutually perpendicular oriented closing an angle of 92.6 degrees .

Abstract
L-Tyrosine-containing dipeptides valyl-tyrosine (H-Val-Tyr-OH) and tyrosyl-alanine (H-Tyr-Ala-OH) are characterized structurally by means of quantum chemical ab initio calculations and solid-state linear-dichroic infrared (IR-LD) spectroscopy. The IR-characteristic bands are assigned by application of reducing-difference procedure for polarized IR-spectra interpretation. Infrared data obtained are supported as well by the made vibrational analysis. The structures of both peptides are predicted on the basis of conformational analysis and structural information, obtained by the shown IR-spectroscopic tool.

Abstract
2-amino-4-nitroaniline crystallizes in a noncentrosymmetric space group, which gives it significant potential for second-order nonlinear optical properties (NLO) in the bulk. Crystallographic and linear-polarized IR-spectrocopic data in the solid state unambiguously confirm a quinoide-like structure in the ground state in contrast to UV and theoretical data, which indicate an aromatic one for the excited state. UV-vis spectral elucidations in solutions with different polarities indicate a significant charge-transfer band with shifts of up to 100 nm, corresponding to a large value for the molecular first hyperpolarizability. Calculations of the UV- and IR-spectroscopic properties confirm the stabilization of the quinoide-like structure in the ground state, as well as the theoretically predicted NLO properties at the molecular level and provide a value of beta(tot), which is some 3.6 times higher than the analogous parameter for p-nitroaniline, a classical compound with experimentally confirmed NLO properties.

Abstract
AbstractDipeptide l-methionyl-glycine (Met-Gly) hydrochloride was characterized structurally by means of solid-state linear polarized IR (IR-LD) spectroscopy of oriented samples as colloidal suspension in nematic liquid crystal. Quantum chemical ab initio calculations and vibrational analysis support the experimental data. 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data, mass spectrometry (ESI-MS and FAB-MS) techniques, thermogravimetry (TGV), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) method were employed as well. The experimental and theoretical data of hydrochloride salt were compared with analogous data of the neutral dipeptide with the aim to explain the role of intermolecular hydrogen bonding on the conformational behavior and spectroscopic properties of the compound studied.
