Controllable ion design in flexible metal organic framework film for performance regulation of electrochemical biosensing

The limitations of solvent residues, unmanageable film growth regions, and substandard performance impede the extensive utilization of metal-organic framework (MOF) films for biosensing devices. Here, we report a strategy for ion design in gas-phase synthesized flexible MOF porous film to attain universal regulation of biosensing performances. The key fabrication process involves atomic layer deposition of induced layer coupled with lithography-assisted patterning and area-selective gas-phase synthesis of MOF film within a chemical vapor deposition system. Sensing platforms are subsequently formed to achieve specific detection of H2O2, dopamine, and glucose molecules by respectively implanting Co, Fe, and Ni ions into the network structure of MOF films. Furthermore, we showcase a practical device constructed from Co ions-implanted ZIF-4 film to accomplish real-time surveillance of H2O2 concentration at mouse wound. This study specifically elucidates the electronic structure and coordination mode of ion design in MOF film, and the obtained knowledge aids in tuning the electrochemical property of MOF film for advantageous sensing devices.

Evaluation of the operational conditions of the glucose oxidase and catalase multienzymatic system through enzyme co-immobilization on amino hierarchical porous silica

Hexaric acids have attracted attention lately because they are platform chemicals for synthesizing pharmaceuticals. In particular, gluconic acid is one of the most studied because it is readily available in nature. In this work, operational conditions like temperature and pH were evaluated for the enzymatic production of gluconic acid. For this purpose, glucose oxidase (GOx) and catalase (CAT) were individually immobilized and co-immobilized using amino-silica as support. The catalytic performance of the enzymes both as separate biocatalysts (GOx or CAT) and as an enzymatic complex (GOx-CAT) was assessed in terms of enzymatic activity and stability at temperatures 45 °C and 50 °C and pH 6 to 8. The results show that CAT is a key enzyme for gluconic acid production as it prevents GOx from being inhibited by H2O2. However, CAT was found to be less stable than GOx. Therefore, different GOx to CAT enzymatic ratios were studied, and a ratio of 1-3 was determined to be the best. The highest glucose conversion conditions were 45 °C and pH 7.0 for 24 h. Regarding the biocatalyst reuse, GOx-CAT retained more than 70% of its activity after 6 reaction cycles. These results contribute to further knowledge and application of oxidases for hexaric acid production and shed greater light on the role of the glucose oxidase/catalase pair in better catalytic performance. Both enzymes were immobilized in one pot, which is relevant for their potential use in industry; an enzyme system was obtained in a single step.

On the Use of Polymer-Based Composites for the Creation of Optical Sensors: A Review

Polymers are widely used in many areas, but often their individual properties are not sufficient for use in certain applications. One of the solutions is the creation of polymer-based composites and nanocomposites. In such materials, in order to improve their properties, nanoscale particles (at least in one dimension) are dispersed in the polymer matrix. These properties include increased mechanical strength and durability, the ability to create a developed inner surface, adjustable thermal and electrical conductivity, and many others. The materials created can have a wide range of applications, such as biomimetic materials and technologies, smart materials, renewable energy sources, packaging, etc. This article reviews the usage of composites as a matrix for the optical sensors and biosensors. It highlights several methods that have been used to enhance performance and properties by optimizing the filler. It shows the main methods of combining indicator dyes with the material of the sensor matrix. Furthermore, the role of co-fillers or a hybrid filler in a polymer composite system is discussed, revealing the great potential and prospect of such matrixes in the field of fine properties tuning for advanced applications.
