Abstract
BACKGROUND Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard for treating biliary colic in patients with gallstones, but post-cholecystectomy abdominal pain is commonly reported. This study investigates which symptoms are likely to persist and which may develop after a cholecystectomy. METHODS Patients from 2 previous prospective trials who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for symptomatic cholecystolithiasis were included. Patients completed questionnaires on pain and gastrointestinal symptoms before surgery and at 6 months follow-up. The prevalence of persistent and new-onset abdominal symptoms was evaluated. RESULTS A total of 820 patients received cholecystectomy and were included, 75.4% female (n = 616/820) mean age 49.4 years (standard deviation 13.7). At baseline, 74.1% (n = 608/820) of patients met all criteria for biliary colic. Cholecystectomy successfully resolved biliary colic in 94.8% (n = 327/345) of patients, but 36.5% (n = 299/820) of patients reported persistent abdominal pain after 6 months of follow-up. The prevalence of most abdominal symptoms reduced significantly. Symptoms such as flatulence (17.8%, n = 146/820) or restricted eating (14.5%, n = 119/820) persisted most often. New-onset symptoms were frequent bowel movements (9.6%, n = 79/820), bowel urgency (8.5%, n = 70/820), and new-onset diarrhea (8.4%, 69/820). CONCLUSION Postcholecystectomy symptoms are mainly flatulence, frequent bowel movements, and restricted eating. Newly reported symptoms are mainly frequent bowel movements, bowel urgency, and diarrhea. The present findings give clinical guidance in informing, managing, and treating patients with symptoms after cholecystectomy.

Abstract
Cholecystectomy is the definite treatment for symptomatic gallstones, and rates are rapidly rising. Symptomatic complicated gallstones are generally treated with cholecystectomy, but there is no consensus on the clinical selection of patients with symptomatic uncomplicated gallstones for cholecystectomy. The aim of this review is to describe symptomatic outcomes before versus after cholecystectomy in patients with symptomatic gallstones as reported in prospective clinical studies and to discuss patient selection for cholecystectomy. Following cholecystectomy, resolution of biliary pain is high and reported for 66-100%. Dyspepsia has an intermediate resolution of 41-91% and may co-exist with biliary pain but may also develop following cholecystectomy with an increase of 150%. Diarrhea has a high increase and debuts in 14-17%. Persisting symptoms are mainly determined by preoperative dyspepsia, functional disorders, atypical pain locations, longer duration of symptoms, and poor psychological or physical health. Patient satisfaction following cholecystectomy is high and may reflect symptom alleviation or a change in symptoms. Comparison of symptomatic outcomes in available prospective clinical studies is limited by variations in preoperative symptoms, clinical presentations, and clinical management of post-cholecystectomy symptoms. When selecting patients with biliary pain only in a randomized controlled trial, 30-40% still have persisting pain. Strategies for the selection of patients with symptomatic uncomplicated gallstones based on symptoms alone are exhausted. For the development of a selection strategy, future studies should explore the impact of objective determinants for symptomatic gallstones on pain relief following cholecystectomy.

Abstract
Importance There is currently no consensus on the indication for cholecystectomy in patients with uncomplicated gallstone disease. Objective To report on the development and validation of a multivariable prediction model to better select patients for surgery. Design, Setting, and Participants This study evaluates data from 2 multicenter prospective trials (the previously published Scrutinizing (In)efficient Use of Cholecystectomy: A Randomized Trial Concerning Variation in Practice [SECURE] and the Standardized Work-up for Symptomatic Cholecystolithiasis [Success] trial) collected from the outpatient clinics of 25 Dutch hospitals between April 2014 and June 2019 and including 1561 patients with symptomatic uncomplicated cholelithiasis, defined as gallstone disease without signs of complicated cholelithiasis (ie, biliary pancreatitis, cholangitis, common bile duct stones or cholecystitis). Data were analyzed from January 2020 to June 2020. Exposures Patient characteristics, comorbidity, surgical outcomes, pain, and symptoms measured at baseline and at 6 months' follow-up. Main Outcomes and Measures A multivariable regression model to predict a pain-free state or a clinically relevant reduction in pain after surgery. Model performance was evaluated using calibration and discrimination. Results A total of 1561 patients were included (494 patients in 7 hospitals in the development cohort and 1067 patients in 24 hospitals in the validation cohort; 6 hospitals included patients in both cohorts). In the development cohort, 395 patients (80.0%) underwent cholecystectomy. After surgery, 225 patients (57.0%) reported that they were pain free and 295 (74.7%) reported a clinically relevant reduction in pain. A multivariable prediction model showed that increased age, no history of abdominal surgery, increased visual analog scale pain score at baseline, pain radiation to the back, pain reduction with simple analgesics, nausea, and no heartburn were independent predictors of clinically relevant pain reduction after cholecystectomy. After internal validation, good discrimination was found (C statistic, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.74-0.84) between patients with and without clinically relevant pain reduction. The model had very good overall calibration and minimal underestimation of the probability. External validation indicated a good discrimination between patients with and without clinically relevant pain reduction (C statistic, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.70-0.78) and fair calibration with some overestimation of probability by the model. Conclusions and Relevance The model validated in this study may help predict the probability of pain reduction after cholecystectomy and thus aid surgeons in deciding whether patients with uncomplicated cholelithiasis will benefit from cholecystectomy.

Abstract
Postcholecystectomy biliary clip migration is a rare but important cause of acute pancreatitis (AP). We report the case of a patient with laparoscopic cholecystectomy for cholelithiasis with cholecystitis and recurrent AP 15 and 19 months after. Imaging findings were suggestive of biliary clip migration. Suspected mechanisms for endoclip migration-induced AP include migration of the clip at a site of dehiscence and migration. When considering this diagnosis, a plain radiograph may be helpful as a comparison to previous imaging to assess for changes in the number of endoclips present, and proper diagnosis can help lead to appropriate management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cholecystectomy does not relieve abdominal symptoms in up to 40% of patients. With 700,000 cholecystectomies performed in the US, annually, about 280,000 patients are left with symptoms, making this a serious problem. We performed a systematic review to determine the different etiologies of long-term postcholecystectomy symptoms with the aim to provide guidance for clinicians treating these patients. METHODS A systematic search of the literature was performed using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science. Articles describing at least one possible etiology of long-term symptoms after a laparoscopic cholecystectomy were included in this review. Long-term symptoms were defined as abdominal symptoms that were present at least four weeks after cholecystectomy, either persistent or incident. The etiologies of persistent and incident symptoms after LC and the mechanism or hypothesis behind the etiologies are provided. If available, the prevalence of the discussed etiology is provided. RESULTS The search strategy identified 3320 articles of which 130 articles were included. Etiologies for persistent symptoms were residual and newly formed gallstones (41 studies, prevalence ranged from 0.2 to 23%), coexistent diseases (64 studies, prevalence 1-65%), and psychological distress (13 studies, no prevalence provided). Etiologies for incident symptoms were surgical complications (21 studies, prevalence 1-3%) and physiological changes (39 studies, prevalence 16-58%). Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (SOD) was reported as an etiology for both persistent and incident symptoms (21 studies, prevalence 3-40%). CONCLUSION Long-term postcholecystectomy symptoms vary amongst patients, arise from different etiologies, and require specific diagnostic and treatment strategies. Most symptoms after cholecystectomy seem to be caused by coexistent diseases and physiological changes due to cholecystectomy. The outcome of this research is summarized in a decision tree to give clinical guidance on the treatment of patients with symptoms after cholecystectomy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Further research is needed to understand how pain frequency, localization of pain and the patient's conviction of the cause of pain effects long-term outcome after gallstone surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cohort study was conducted based on patients evaluated with SF-36 along with three single-items focusing on gallstone specific symptoms. The physical component summary (PCS) and bodily pain (BP) of SF-36 were used as main outcome measures. To assess the improvement from the procedure, the differences between the preoperative and postoperative ratings were tested with univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. The ratings on the single-items regarding pain frequency, pain localization and patient's conviction of the cause of pain were used as predictors. In the multivariate analysis, adjustment was made for age, gender and approach. The study was approved by the Swedish Ethics Committee, Dnr 2015/115. RESULTS The study group was based on 4021 patients who responded to the questionnaire SF-36 and the three gallstone specific items preoperatively. A total of 2216 (55.1%) patients also responded postoperatively. In multivariate logistic regression analysis the frequency of the pain attacks and the patient's conviction of the origin of pain significantly predicted postoperative pain as well as PCS of SF-36 (all p < .05). CONCLUSIONS The preoperative frequency of pain attacks and the patient's conviction of the cause of pain can predict the outcome regarding PCS and the subscale BP of SF-36 with significantly better ratings in patients with a pain frequency exceeding once per month and in patients convinced of having pain related to gallstones.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High rates of persistent symptoms are found following cholecystectomy in patients with gallstones. The aim of this population based cohort study was to determine which symptoms were associated with the development of clinical gallstone events in a population unaware of their gallstones. MATERIAL AND METHODS Three random population samples from Copenhagen (N = 6037) were examined with ultrasound during 1982-1994. Participants were not informed about gallstone status. Abdominal symptoms were assessed at baseline through a questionnaire. Follow-up for clinical events was performed through central registers until 2011. Multivariable Cox regression analyses were performed. RESULTS Participants unaware of their gallstones (N = 595) were followed for median 17.5 years. A total of 16.6% participants developed clinical events. Both uncomplicated and complicated events were associated with high pain intensity at baseline. Complicated events were also associated with pain at night. Uncomplicated events were associated with pain localized in the epigastrium, of longer duration, and in need of pain medication. No associations were identified for dyspepsia or irritable bowel syndrome. CONCLUSIONS In a population of unaware gallstone carriers, it was possible to identify abdominal symptoms associated with later clinical detection of the gallstones. These finding may contribute to a better selection of patients for surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cholecystectomy is the therapy of first choice in patients with uncomplicated symptomatic cholecystolithiasis, but it remains unclear which patients truly benefit in terms of health status improvement. Patients generally present with episodic abdominal pain of varying frequency, duration, and intensity. We assessed whether characteristics of abdominal pain episodes are determinants of clinically relevant improvement of health status after cholecystectomy. METHODS In a post hoc analysis of a prospective multicenter cohort study, patients of ≥18 years of age with uncomplicated symptomatic cholecystolithiasis subjected to cholecystectomy were included. Preoperatively, patients received a structured interview and a questionnaire consisting of the visual analogue scale (VAS; range 0-100) and gastrointestinal quality of life index (GIQLI). At 12 weeks after cholecystectomy, the GIQLI was again administered. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine significant associations. RESULTS Questionnaires were sent to 261 and returned by 166 (63.6 %) patients (128 females, mean age at surgery 49.5 ± 13.8). A total of 131 (78.9 %) patients reported a clinically relevant improvement of health status. The median (interquartile range) frequency, duration, and intensity of abdominal pain episodes were 0.38 (0.18-0.75) a week, 4.00 (2.00-8.00) hours, and 92 (77-99), respectively. None of the characteristics was associated with a clinically relevant improvement of health status at 12 weeks after cholecystectomy. CONCLUSIONS Characteristics of abdominal pain episodes cannot be used to inform patients with symptomatic cholecystolithiasis who are skeptic about the timing of cholecystectomy for optimal benefit. Timing of cholecystectomy should therefore be based on other characteristics and preferences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the fact that cholecystectomy is a common surgical procedure, the impact on long-term gastrointestinal quality of life is not fully known. METHODS All surgical procedures for gallstone disease performed at Mora County Hospital, Sweden, between 2 January 2002 and 2 January 2005, were registered on a standard database form. In 2007, all patients under the age of 80 years at follow-up were requested to fill in a form containing the Gastrointestinal Quality-of-Life Index (GIQLI) questionnaire and a number of additional questions. The outcome was analysed with respect to age, gender, smoking, surgical technique, and original indication for cholecystectomy. RESULTS A total of 627 patients (447 women, 180 men) underwent cholecystectomy, including laparoscopic cholecystectomy (N = 524), laparoscopic cholecystectomy converted to open cholecystectomy (N = 43), and open cholecystectomy (N = 60). The mean time between cholecystectomy and follow-up with the questionnaire was 49 months. The participation rate was 79 %. Using multivariate analysis in the form of generalised linear modelling, the original indication for cholecystectomy in combination with gender (p = 0.0042) was found to predict the GIQLI score. Female gender in combination with biliary colic as indication for cholecystectomy correlated with low GIQLI scores. Female gender also correlated with a higher risk for pain in the right upper abdominal quadrant after cholecystectomy (p = 0.028). CONCLUSIONS We found the original indication for cholecystectomy, together with gender, to predict gastrointestinal symptoms and abdominal pain after cholecystectomy. Careful evaluation of symptoms is important before planning elective cholecystectomy.

BACKGROUND The number and rate of cholecystectomy are increasing worldwide, although indications for operative treatment remain empirical, and several issues in the understanding of the condition are not concisely outlined. Our intention is to summarize and interpret current opinion regarding the indications and timing of cholecystectomy in calculous gallbladder disease. METHODS Publications concerned with gallstone disease and related topics were searched for in MEDLINE using PubMed and summarized according to clinical scenarios with an emphasis on recent research. RESULTS Only one randomized controlled trial has investigated the management (conservative vs. surgery) of patients with acute cholecystitis and several have compared early with deferred surgery. Two RCTs have examined treatment of uncomplicated, symptomatic gallstone disease. Apart from these, the overwhelming majority of publications are retrospective case series. CONCLUSIONS Recent literature confirms that cholecystectomy for an asymptomatic or incidental gallstone is not justified. Symptomatic, uncomplicated gallstone disease may be classified into four severity groups based on severity and frequency of pain attacks, which may guide indication for cholecystectomy. Most patients below the age of 70 seem to prefer operative treatment. Acute cholecystitis may be treated with early operation if reduction of hospital days is an issue. Patients older than 70 years with significant comorbidities may forego surgical treatment without undue hazard. Symptoms following cholecystectomy remain in 25% or more and recent evidence suggest these are caused by a functional gastrointestinal disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cholecystectomy is the preferred treatment option for symptomatic gallstones, but the exact relationship between cholecystectomies and symptoms still is unclear. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of elective cholecystectomy for patients with cholecystolithiasis in terms of both persistent and de novo symptoms. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted in Pubmed and Embase. The search included studies comprising patients 18 years of age or older undergoing elective cholecystectomy for symptomatic cholecystolithiasis. The proportions of symptoms after cholecystectomy were calculated and then subdivided into persistent and de novo symptoms. RESULTS A total of 38 studies reported the presence of postcholecystectomy symptoms. The results showed that upper abdominal pain, the main indication for cholecystectomy in the majority of the patients, mostly disappeared after surgery. However, it persisted in up to 33 % of the patients and arose de novo in up to 14 %. Diarrhea (85 %) and constipation (76 %) were the persistent symptoms most often reported, whereas upper abdominal pain and vomiting were the least often reported. Flatulence (62 %) was the most often reported new symptom. However, large variations in symptoms were found between studies. CONCLUSIONS The review indicates that cholecystectomy often is ineffective with regard to persistent and de novo symptoms. The finding that the types and proportions of persistent symptoms differ from those that arise de novo suggests that this distinction may be useful in predicting which patients would and which would not benefit from a cholecystectomy.

Abstract
AIM: To classify gallstone disease as a basis for assessment of post-cholecystectomy symptoms.
METHODS: One hundred and fifty three patients with a clinical and ultrasonographic diagnosis of gallstones filled out a structured questionnaire on abdominal pain symptoms and functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID) before and at six months after cholecystectomy. Symptom frequency groups (SFG) were categorized according to frequency of pain attacks. According to certain pain characteristics in gallstone patients, a gallstone symptom score was accorded on a scale from one to ten. A visual analogue scale was used to quantify pain. Operative specimens were examined for size and magnitude of stone contents as well as presence of bacteria. Follow-up took place after six months with either a consultation or via a mailed questionnaire. Results were compared with those obtained pre-operatively to describe and analyze symptomatic outcome.
RESULTS: SFG groups were categorized as severe (24.2%), moderate (38.6%), and mild (22.2%) attack frequency, and a chronic pain condition (15%). Pain was cured or improved in about 90% of patients and two-thirds of patients obtained complete symptom relief. Patients with the most frequent pain episodes were less likely to obtain symptom relief. FGID was present in 88% of patients pre-operatively and in 57% post-operatively (P = 0.244). Those that became asymptomatic or improved with regard to pain also had most relief from FGID (P = 0.001). No pre-operative FGID meant almost complete cure.
CONCLUSION: Only one third of patients with FGID experienced postoperative relief, indicating that FGID was a dominant cause of post-cholecystectomy symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The fate of asymptomatic gallstones has not been investigated in many studies with a long-term follow-up. We wanted to examine the subsequent rate of cholecystectomy and gallstone-related symptoms in a population examined in 1983. METHODS Among the persons examined in 1983, unknown (perceived as silent) gallstones were discovered in 20.1% (285/1417) persons. Owing to technical reasons, only 89.9% (1274 persons) of the original study population was retrieved for the present study. Of these, 19.2% (245 persons) had gallstones in 1983 [135 women (55.1%) and 110 men (44.9%), mean age in 1983: 49.9 and 51.3 years, respectively]. RESULTS Of the 154 still living persons with gallstones from 1983, 134 were traced for follow-up. Of these, 89 underwent a clinical examination and 45 answered a mail or telephone questionnaire. Ultrasonography revealed gallstones in 28.1% (25/89) and 6.7% (9/134) had had the gallbladder removed. 5.5% (5/91) of the deceased patients had had a cholecystectomy. Overall cholecystectomy rate was 6.2%. No link could be shown between the number and the size of gallstones in 1983 and the ultrasonographic demonstration of gallstones in 2007. 43.8% had abdominal pain, and 29.2% had functional abdominal complaints. CONCLUSIONS Unexpectedly, only a minority of persons examined with ultrasonography had present day gallstones without any obvious explanation for this low figure. The rate of cholecystectomy was low in a conservative setting and no adverse events could be ascertained from such a policy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pain is the most common symptom following laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and might delay discharge from hospital after day surgery. A patient's ability to manage stressful situations can be assessed by the sense of coherence (SOC) and has been proposed to predict health. The aim of this study was to investigate predictors of average pain the first postoperative week after LC, and predictors of changes in perceived health, with special reference to individual coping resources measured by the Sense of Coherence Scale. Furthermore, a test-re-test was performed on SOC to evaluate the stability in the context of LC surgery. METHOD Seventy-three patients completed questionnaires about SOC, health status, pain, anxiety, symptom occurrence and symptom distress preoperatively, postoperative day 1-7 and after 1 and 6 months following LC. RESULTS By multiple regression, 23% of the variability in pain intensity could be explained by the variables age, SOC and education. Age was the strongest predictor. Further, 19% of the change in health between day 7 and 1 month could be explained by the two variables symptom distress the first postoperative day and SOC. The test-re-test of SOC had a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.55. Forty-six patients (63%) remained within ±10% of their preoperative SOC score at 6 months, 11 patients (15%) decreased and 16 patients (22%) increased their SOC values. CONCLUSION SOC was found to be a significant but weak predictor of pain intensity the first week after LC. Furthermore, patients scoring low SOC values experienced a delay in their health improvement. SOC was more unstable over time than previously suggested. Further, interventional studies are needed to clarify if SOC might be a clinically useful measure to identify vulnerable patients undergoing LC surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Donor outcome after living donor liver transplantation has not been examined extensively with regard to postoperative abdominal complaints. We wanted to examine the extent and type of abdominal complaints after removal of a part of the liver and gallbladder in living donors as well as potential similarities with known disorders. METHODS Twelve patients of mixed ethnicity, nine men, aged 18-45 years, and three women, aged 32-46 years, were enrolled in the study during a 3-year period and followed up at 6 and 12 months. Patients filled out questionnaires pertaining to functional abdominal complaints (FAC) using a recognized questionnaire, Rome II, as well as specific abdominal pain symptoms known from gallstone disease. RESULTS FAC occurred in 11 patients at 6 months and nine patients at 12 months while abdominal pain occurred in seven and six patients, respectively. Three patients had FAC but no abdominal pain while two patients had no complaints at 12 months. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) was found in the majority of patients. CONCLUSIONS FAC and pain seemed to indicate a general postoperative disorder, of a psychosomatic character, and not connected with removal of part of the liver and gallbladder in particular. However, the occurrence of IBS and FD should merit attention, as they are known to impair quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The knowledge of natural history is essential for disease management. We evaluated the natural history (e.g. frequency and characteristics of symptoms and clinical outcome) of gallstones (GS) in a population-based cohort study. METHODS A total of 11 229 subjects (6610 men, 4619 women, age-range: 29-69 years, mean age: 48 years) were studied. At ultrasonography, GS were present in 856 subjects (338 men, 455 women) (7.1%). GS were followed by means of a questionnaire inquiring about the characteristics of specific biliary symptoms. RESULTS At enrollment, 580 (73.1%) patients were asymptomatic, 94 (11.8%) had mild symptoms and 119 (15.1%) had severe symptoms. GS patients were followed up for a mean period of 8.7 years; 63 subjects (7.3%) were lost to follow up. At the end of the follow up, of the asymptomatic subjects, 453 (78.1%) remained asymptomatic; 61 (10.5%) developed mild symptoms and 66 (11.4%) developed severe symptoms. In subjects with mild symptoms, the symptoms disappeared in 55 (58.5%), became severe in 23 (24.5%), remained stable in 16 (17%); in subjects with severe symptoms, the symptoms disappeared in 62 (52.1%), became mild in 20 (16.8%) and remained stable in 37 (31.1%). A total of 189 cholecystectomies were performed: 41.3% on asymptomatic patients, 17.4% on patients with mild symptoms and 41.3% on patients with severe symptoms. CONCLUSIONS This study indicates that: (i) asymptomatic and symptomatic GS patients have a benign natural history; (ii) the majority of GS patients with severe or mild symptoms will no longer experience biliary pain; and (iii) a significant proportion of cholecystectomies are performed in asymptomatic patients. Expectant management still represents a valid therapeutic approach in the majority of patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several epidemiological studies have been published, but there are few reports on relations between gallstone incidence, symptomatology and risk factors. METHODS Of 621 randomly selected individuals aged 35-85 years in a general population who had been screened previously with ultrasonography and found to have no gallbladder stones, 503 (81.0 per cent) were re-examined after a minimum interval of 5 years. At baseline and re-examination, heredity for gallstone disease was explored and body mass index, digestive symptoms including abdominal pain, quality of life, alcohol and smoking habits, use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and oestrogen, parity and blood lipid levels were recorded. RESULTS Forty-two (8.3 per cent) of the 503 subjects developed stones. Subjects were followed for a total of 3025.8 person-years, yielding an incidence for newly developed gallstones of 1.39 per 100 person-years. A positive association for gallstone development was found only for length of follow-up and plasma low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels at baseline. Weekly alcohol consumption was inversely related to gallstone development. CONCLUSION The incidence of gallstones in this population was 1.39 per 100 person-years. Gallstone development was related to length of follow-up and LDL-cholesterol levels, and inversely related to alcohol consumption.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study analyzed patient demographics and preoperative functional status for associations with post-cholecystectomy quality of life (QOL). METHODS This prospective study analyzed 159 cholecystectomy patients at two tertiary academic hospitals. All patients completed the SF-36 and the gastrointestinal quality of life index (GIQLI) at baseline and at 3 and 6 months postoperatively. The 95% confidence intervals for differences in responsiveness estimates were derived by bootstrap estimation. Scores derived by these instruments were interpreted by generalized estimating equation (GEE) before and after cholecystectomy. RESULTS The examined population significantly (p < 0.05) improved in both SF-36 subscales and GIQLI subscales. After adjusting for time effects (time, and time(2)) and baseline predictors, GEE approaches revealed the following explanatory variables for QOL: time, time(2), age, gender, preoperative GIQLI score, body mass index, and number of comorbidities. CONCLUSION The data revealed dramatically improved post-cholecystectomy QOL. However, QOL change was simultaneously associated with preoperative functional status and demographic characteristics.
