On the Origin of the Plasmonic Properties of Gold Nanoparticles

DNA-Based Gold Nanoparticle Assemblies: From Structure Constructions to Sensing Applications

Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have become one of the building blocks for superior assembly and device fabrication due to the intrinsic, tunable physical properties of nanoparticles. With the development of DNA nanotechnology, gold nanoparticles are organized in a highly precise and controllable way under the mediation of DNA, achieving programmability and specificity unmatched by other ligands. The successful construction of abundant gold nanoparticle assembly structures has also given rise to the fabrication of a wide range of sensors, which has greatly contributed to the development of the sensing field. In this review, we focus on the progress in the DNA-mediated assembly of Au NPs and their application in sensing in the past five years. Firstly, we highlight the strategies used for the orderly organization of Au NPs with DNA. Then, we describe the DNA-based assembly of Au NPs for sensing applications and representative research therein. Finally, we summarize the advantages of DNA nanotechnology in assembling complex Au NPs and outline the challenges and limitations in constructing complex gold nanoparticle assembly structures with tailored functionalities.

Plasmonic Nanostructure Biosensors: A Review

Plasmonic nanostructure biosensors based on metal are a powerful tool in the biosensing field. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) can be classified into localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and propagating surface plasmon polariton (PSPP), based on the transmission mode. Initially, the physical principles of LSPR and PSPP are elaborated. In what follows, the recent development of the biosensors related to SPR principle is summarized. For clarity, they are categorized into three groups according to the sensing principle: (i) inherent resonance-based biosensors, which are sensitive to the refractive index changes of the surroundings; (ii) plasmon nanoruler biosensors in which the distances of the nanostructure can be changed by biomolecules at the nanoscale; and (iii) surface-enhanced Raman scattering biosensors in which the nanostructure serves as an amplifier for Raman scattering signals. Moreover, the advanced application of single-molecule detection is discussed in terms of metal nanoparticle and nanopore structures. The review concludes by providing perspectives on the future development of plasmonic nanostructure biosensors.

Ti-Based porous materials for reactive oxygen species-mediated photocatalytic reactions

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are highly reactive oxidants that are typically generated by the irradiation of semiconducting materials with visible or UV light and are widely used for the photocatalytic degradation of toxic substances, photodynamic therapy, and selective organic transformations. In this context, TiO₂ is considered to be among the most promising photocatalysts due to its high redox activity, structural stability, and natural abundance. In view of the extensive development of highly active photocatalysts, we herein briefly introduce TiO₂ and the mechanisms of TiO₂-mediated ROS generation, subsequently focusing on key advances in the design and synthesis of Ti-containing porous materials, such as porous TiO₂, Ti-based metal-organic frameworks, and Ti-based metal-organic aerogels. In particular, this review highlights the significance of porosity and the structure-function relationship for the development of Ti-based photocatalysts. The structures, porosities, and ROS generation mechanisms of these materials as well as the related efficiencies of ROS-mediated photocatalytic organic transformations are discussed in detail to provide a useful reference for future researchers and to inspire the exploration of high-performance photocatalysts.
