Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at a substantially higher risk for stroke, which may predispose individuals to cognitive impairment. However, the association of low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and albuminuria with poorer cognitive performance in patients with stroke is not fully understood, and the current evidence for this association is contradictory. Our aim was to retrospectively investigate whether low eGFR and albuminuria, as indicated by the urine albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR), are independently or jointly associated with worse cognitive performance in patients with ischemic stroke. METHODS This retrospective study included 608 patients with acute ischemic stroke. Their UACR and eGFR values were obtained from inpatient medical records. Global cognitive function was assessed with the mini-mental state exam (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) one month after hospital discharge. The relationship between renal measures and cognitive performance was assessed using univariate and multiple linear regression analyses. Potential confounders included age, gender, BMI, education, diabetes and hypertension history, NIHSS score, smoking and alcohol consumption status, serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, fasting glucose, uric acid, homocysteine, systolic blood pressure, and either eGFR or UACR. RESULTS Patients had an average age of 66.6±4.1 years, and 48% were females. Average eGFR and UACR were 88.4±12.9 ml/min/1.73m2 and 83.6±314.2 mg/g, respectively. The number of patients with eGFR ≥90, 60-89, and <60 ml/min/1.73 m2 was 371 (61%), 207 (34%), and 30 (5%), respectively, and the percentage of patients with UACR <30 mg/g, 30-300 mg/g, and >300 mg/g was 56%, 39%, and 5%, respectively. Multivariate adjusted models showed that eGFR was independently associated with MMSE (β = -0.4; 95% CI = -0.5,-0.4; p <0.001) and MoCA (β = -0.6; 95% CI = -0.7,-0.5; p <0.001). However, UACR was not significantly correlated with MMSE or MoCA. CONCLUSION In patients with ischemic stroke, reduced eGFR but not albuminuria was associated with lower cognitive performance. These results show that the eGFR decline could be an effective indicator of cognitive impairment after a stroke. Therefore, regular monitoring and early detection of mild renal dysfunction in patients with acute ischemic stroke might be needed.

Abstract
Dementia is a syndrome that impairs learning and memory. To date, there is no effective therapy for dementia. Current prescription drugs, such as cholinesterase inhibitors, fail to improve the condition of dementia and are often accompanied by severe adverse effects. In recent years, the number of studies into the use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for dementia treatment has increased, revealing a formula that could significantly improve memory and cognitive dysfunctions in animal models. TCM showed fewer adverse effects, lower costs, and improved suitability for long-term use compared with currently prescribed drugs. Due to the complexity of ingredients and variations in bioactivity of herbal medicines, the multi-target nature of the traditional Chinese formula affected the outcome of dementia therapy. Innovations in TCM will create a platform for the development of new drugs for the prevention and treatment of dementia, further strengthening and enhancing the current influence of TCM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The study aimed to discuss the influences of 24-form Tai Chi on cardio-pulmonary functions, exercise performances, and cognitive functions of the aged. METHODS Forty old people in Pingdingshan of China were selected through convenient sampling method from 2020 to 2021. They were randomly divided into the observation group (n=20) and the control group (n=20). The observation group exercised 24-form Tai Chi for 8 weeks, three times per week, 45 min per session. The respondents were evaluated by cardiopulmonary exercise testing, sitting-standing test, 6-min walking test, and the Berg balance scale. The P300 test was performed to evaluate the cognitive functions of respondents. RESULTS After the intervention, the observation group was significantly (P<0.05) superior to the control group concerning maximal oxygen consumption, anaerobic threshold, vital capacity, stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD), left end-diastolic velocity (EDV), sitting-standing test, 6-min walking test, and the Breg balance function scores, showing statistically significant differences (P<0.05). The content of body fat and body mass index (BMI) of the observation group decreased significantly, whereas muscle mass and fat-free mass increased dramatically, which were however significantly lower than those of the controlled group (P<0.05). Moreover, the P3b amplitude of the observation group increased significantly (P<0.05) and was significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION The 24-form Tai Chi not only improves cardio-pulmonary functions and exercise performances of the aged but also increases cognitive functions of the aged.

Abstract
Objective. Vitamin D insufficiency and the cognitive function decline are both common in patients receiving hemodialysis (HD). The present study evaluated the relation between cognitive function and circulating vitamin D levels in HD patients in Wannan Medical College Affiliated Yijishan Hospital, China. Methods. This study was conducted in 80 patients receiving HD in Wannan Medical College Affiliated Yijishan Hospital. To measure cognitive function, Montreal Cognitive Assessment-Basic (MoCA-B) Chinese Version was used. The 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], which is applied to assess vitamin D status, was tested. One-way ANOVA, Tukey post hoc test, and the correlation and regression analysis were used in this study. Results. Based on the MoCA-B, cognitive function decline (the scores below 26) was present in 28 HD patients, accounting for 35% (28/80). The mean age of these patients is
years old. The mean level of 25(OH)D was
in 80 HD patients. In univariate analysis, there was a significant relationship between MoCA-B score and serum 25(OH)D level (
). The level of 25(OH)D was positively correlated with MoCA-B score (

), and the association was independent of demographic and clinical features. Conclusions. Vitamin D insufficiency may contribute to cognitive function decline in HD patients. Serum level of 25(OH)D is an independent protective factor of cognitive function in the HD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between serum uric acid (UA) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk still remained ambiguous despite extensive attempts. OBJECTIVE Via the two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) design, we aimed to examine the bidirectional causal relationships of serum UA, gout, and the risk of AD. METHODS Genetic variants of UA, gout, and AD were extracted from published genome-wide association summary statistics. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW, the primary method), and several sensitivity methods (MR-Egger, weighted median, and weighted mode) were used to calculate the effect estimates. Egger regression, MR-PRESSO and leave-one-SNP-out analysis were performed to identify potential violations. RESULTS Genetic proxies for serum UA concentration [odds ratio (ORIVW) = 1.09, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.01-1.19, p = 0.031] were related with an increased risk of AD using 25 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). This causal effect was confirmed by sensitivity analyses including MR-Egger (1.22, 1.06-1.42, p = 0.014), weighted median (1.18, 1.05-1.33, p = 0.006), and weighted mode (1.20, 1.07-1.35, p = 0.005) methods. No evidence of notable directional pleiotropy and heterogeneity were identified (p > 0.05). Three SNPs (rs2078267, rs2231142, and rs11722228) significantly drove the observed causal effects. Supportive causal effect of genetically determined gout on AD risk was demonstrated using two SNPs (ORIVW = 1.05, 95% CI = 1.00-1.11, p = 0.057). No reverse causal effects of AD on serum UA levels and gout risk were found. CONCLUSION The findings revealed a causal relationship between elevated serum UA level and AD risk. However, further research is still warranted to investigate whether serum UA could be a reliable biomarker and therapeutic target for AD.

Abstract
(1) Background: Cognitive impairment (CI) is common in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and patients treated with hemodialysis. (2) Methods: The systematic review was prepared following the PRISMA statement (2013). The biomedical electronic databases MEDLINE and SCOPUS were searched. (3) Results: out of 1093 studies, only 30, which met problem and population criteria, were included in this review. The risk factors for CI can be divided into three groups: traditional risk factors (present in the general population), factors related to dialysis sessions, and nontraditional risk factors occurring more frequently in the HD group. (4) Conclusions: the methods of counteracting CI effective in the general population should also be effective in HD patients. However, there is a need to develop unique anti-CI approaches targeting specific HD risk factors, i.e., modified hemodialysis parameters stabilizing cerebral saturation and blood flow.

Abstract
Uric acid is commonly known for its bad reputation. However, it has been shown that uric acid may be actively involved in neurotoxicity and/or neuroprotection. These effects could be caused by oxidative stress or inflammatory processes localized in the central nervous system, but also by other somatic diseases or systemic conditions. Our interest was to summarize and link the current data on the possible role of uric acid in cognitive functioning. We also focused on the two putative molecular mechanisms related to the pathological effects of uric acid-oxidative stress and inflammatory processes. The hippocampus is a prominent anatomic localization included in expressing uric acid's potential impact on cognitive functioning. In neurodegenerative and mental disorders, uric acid could be involved in a variety of ways in etiopathogenesis and clinical presentation. Hyperuricemia is non-specifically observed more frequently in the general population and after various somatic illnesses. There is increasing evidence to support the hypothesis that hyperuricemia may be beneficial for cognitive functioning because of its antioxidant effects but may also be a potential risk factor for cognitive dysfunction, in part because of increased inflammatory activity. In this context, gender specificities must also be considered.

Abstract
Objective Galectin-3, an inflammatory mediator derived from microglia, participates in the pathophysiological process of various neurological diseases. However, the relationship between galectin-3 and poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) remains ambiguous. This research purposed to prove whether serum galectin-3 can predict PSCI. Methods In the end, an aggregate of 416 patients with the first acute ischemic stroke (AIS) were continuously and prospectively enrolled in the study. Upon admission, the baseline data of AIS patients were collected, and their serum galectin-3 levels were measured. Three months after the stroke, the Montreal Cognitive Scale (MoCA) was utilized to measure the cognitive function of AIS patients, and PSCI was defined as a MoCA score less than 26 points. Results Premised on the MoCA scores, patients were categorized into PSCI cohort and non-PSCI cohort. The two AIS patient cohorts did not exhibit any statistical difference in their baseline characteristics (p > 0.05). However, the serum galectin-3 level of AIS patients in the PSCI cohort was considerably elevated (p < 0.001). Pearson correlation analysis illustrated that serum galectin-3 level was negatively linked to MoCA score (r = −0.396, p < 0.05). The findings from the receiver-operating curve (ROC) illustrated that the sensitivity of serum galectin-3 as a possible biomarker for diagnosing PSCI was 66%, and the specificity was 94%. The cut-off value of serum galectin-3 to diagnose PSCI is 6.3 ng/mL (OR = 5.49, p < 0.001). Upon controlling for different variables, serum galectin-3 level remained to be an independent predictor of PSCI (p < 0.001). Conclusions Elevated serum galectin-3 levels are linked to a higher risk of PSCI. Serum galectin-3 could be a prospective biomarker for predicting PSCI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the clinical effects of interactive dynamic scalp acupuncture (IDSA), simple combination therapy (SCT), and traditional scalp acupuncture (TSA) on cognitive function, depression and anxiety in patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment. METHODS A total of 660 patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment who were admitted to 3 hospitals in Shenzhen City between May 2017 and May 2020 were recruited and randomly assigned to the IDSA (218 cases), SCT (222 cases) and TSA groups (220 cases) according to a random number table. All the patients received conventional drug therapy for cerebral stroke and exercise rehabilitation training. Scalp acupuncture and computer-based cognitive training (CBCT) were performed simultaneously in the IDSA group, but separately in the morning and in the afternoon in the SCT group. The patients in the TSA group underwent scalp acupuncture only. The course of treatment was 8 weeks. Before treatment (M0), 1 (M1) and 2 months (M2) after treatment, as well as follow-up at 1 (M3) and 2 months (M4), the cognitive function of patients was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale (MoCA) Scales; depression, anxiety, sleep quality, and self-care ability of patients were assessed using Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Modified Barthel Index (MBI), respectively. During this trial, all adverse events (AEs) were accurately recorded. RESULTS There were no significant differences in the MMSE, MoCA, HAMD, HAMA, PSQI, and MBI scores among the 3 groups at M0 (all P>0.05). In the IDSA group, the MMSE, MoCA and MBI scores from M2 to M4 were significantly higher than those in the SCT and TSA groups, while the HAMD, HAMA and PSQI scores were significantly reduced (all P<0.01). The changes of all above scores (M2-M0, M4-M0) were significantly superior to those in the SCT and TSA groups (all P<0.01, except M4-M0 of HAMD). At M2, the severity of MMSE, HAMD, HAMA, PSQI and MBI in the IDSA group was significantly lower than that in the SCT and TSA groups (all P<0.01). There was no serious AE during this trial. CONCLUSIONS IDSA can not only significantly improve cognitive function, but also reduce depression, anxiety, which finally improves the patient's self-care ability. The effect of IDSA was significantly better than SCT and TSA. (Trial registration No. ChiCTR1900027206).

Abstract
Background Previous studies reported that the level of serum uric acid (SUA) was an important risk factor for acute cerebral infarction (ACI). However, the prognostic value of SUA levels in hospitalized patients with ACI has not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the SUA level on admission was associated with subsequent mortality in hospitalized patients with ACI. Methods The clinical data of ACI patients obtained from December 2017 to December 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. χ2 and Kaplan–Meier methods were used to compare the clinical differences and overall survival between patients with or without hyperuricemia, respectively. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify independent prognoses. Results In the total population, the in-hospital mortality of the hyperuricemia group was significantly higher than that of the normal uric acid group (P = 0.006). In the abnormal renal function group, the in-hospital mortality among the hyperuricemia group was significantly higher than the normal uric acid group (P = 0.002). However, there was no statistical difference of in-hospital mortality between the two groups in the normal renal function group (P = 0.321). Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that a previous history of diabetes (P = 0.018), hyperuricemia (P = 0.001), and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score on admission (P ≤ 0.001) were independent factors for all samples. The hyperuricemia (P = 0.003) on admission were independent factors for patients with abnormal renal function. Conclusions In ACI patients with abnormal renal function, hyperuricemia may be associated with higher in-hospital mortality than patients with normal uric acid, and hyperuricemia may be an independent associated factor for in-hospital death in the subgroup patients.

Abstract
Background: Irisin, a new exercise-related myokine, has been shown to be associated with a variety of diseases including serious neurological disorders. However, whether irisin is involved in the pathogenesis of vascular dementia (VD) has not yet been reported. Our aim is to determine the serum irisin level in patients with VD and investigate its relationship with cognitive function. Methods: The subjects of the study were VD patients and controls with normal cognitive function who were hospitalized in the Neck-Shoulder and Lumbocrural Pain Hospital of Shandong First Medical University from July 2018 to June 2020. Upon admission, a cognitive function assessment was performed. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to determine the concentration of irisin in serum. Results: During the study period, 187 subjects (82 controls and 105 VD patients) were included in the analysis. The serum irisin level of VD patients was significantly lower than that of the control group (p < 0.001). Spearman analysis showed that irisin was positively correlated with HLD-C and MoCA, and negatively correlated with all clinical characteristics except for HCY. Logistic regression analysis showed that after adjusting for all clinical characteristics, the serum irisin of VD patients still had a significant correlation with MoCA (β = 0.304, p = 0.029). According to receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the diagnostic accuracy for serum irisin levels on VD was 76% with the sensitivity and 71% with specificity respectively. Conclusions: These data indicate that a decrease in serum irisin levels is a powerful biological marker for cognitive decline in patients with VD, even after adjustment for risk factors. Further multi-center studies need to confirm this connection, which may pave the way for new treatment options.

Abstract
Objective Neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), a glycoprotein widely distributed in the brain, has recently been shown to regulate neuroplasticity. However, the role of NCAM in vascular dementia (VaD) is still unclear. The purpose of this study is to determine whether NCAM is involved in the course of VaD. Methods Continuous recruitment of VaD patients and control population to join this study. Doctors or nurses are responsible for collecting their clinical characteristics including age, gender, formal education, heart rate, supine systolic blood pressure, supine diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, high-density lipoprotein, and low-density lipoprotein. Each participant received the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scale after being enrolled in the group. At the same time, their peripheral blood was collected, and their serum NCAM levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results 98 VaD patients and 83 age- and sex-matched controls were enrolled. There was no significant statistical difference between the VaD group and the control group in terms of the comparison of clinical characteristics (p > 0.05). The MoCA score of VaD patients was significantly lower than that of the controls (27.9 ± 1.4 vs. 23.0 ± 2.1 points, p < 0.001). In addition, the circulating NCAM level of VaD patients was also significantly lower than that of controls (21.7 ± 3.8 vs. 17.6 ± 4.2 ng/mL, p < 0.001). The circulating NCAM level of VaD patients was significantly positively correlated with MoCA score (r = 0.285, p = 0.026). After adjusting for clinical characteristics, circulating NCAM levels are still an independent pathogenic factor of VaD (regression coefficient = 0.223, p = 0.034). Conclusions VaD patients have low circulating NCAM levels, which can be used as a potential predictor of VaD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Neuropeptide Y (NPY), a 36-amino acid neuromodulator, is mainly secreted by neurons in the central and peripheral nervous systems, which participate in the regulation of a series of physiological processes. However, there are few studies on its correlation with intracranial hemorrhage (ICH). The purpose of this study is to determine whether the serum NPY level is related to the prognosis of ICH. METHODS 364 patients diagnosed with ICH were included in the current study. The demographics, anthropometrics, medical history, clinical severity, and laboratory data are collected. Enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) was used to detect the serum NPY level of each patient upon admission. Three months after the occurrence of ICH, we used the modified Rankin scale (mRS) to evaluate the prognosis of patients, and mRS > 2 was defined as a poor prognosis. RESULTS A total of 364 patients with ICH were included in the study, including 140 patients with a good prognosis and 224 patients with a poor prognosis. Compared with patients with a poor prognosis, ICH patients with a good prognosis have a lower baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score (p = 0.036) and smaller hematoma volume (p = 0.039). The results of ELISA showed that compared with patients with a poor prognosis, ICH patients with a good prognosis had lower serum NPY levels (19.4 ± 3.7 vs. 27.6 ± 3.3 ng/ml, p < 0.001). Linear correlation analysis showed that the serum NPY level of ICH patients was significantly positively correlated with the baseline NIHSS score (r = 0.413, p = 0.041) and hematoma volume (r = 0.308, p = 0.026). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that the sensitivity of the serum NPY level to predict the prognosis of ICH was 70.9%, the specificity was 72.6%, and the cut-off value was 24.2 ng/ml. CONCLUSIONS The serum NPY level may be used as a predictor of ICH prognosis.

Abstract
As a powerful antioxidant in the human body, uric acid (UA) has been the subject of increasing research that focused on its influence on Alzheimer's disease (AD) in recent years. The latest literature was gathered to describe the influence of serum uric acid (SUA) level on the onset and progression of AD and to analyze the possibility that SUA is a biomarker of Alzheimer's disease. A large number of existing studies suggested that the SUA level was lower or tended to decrease in patients with AD, and increased SUA level may have a protective effect in AD, which could reduce the risk of onset and slowing the course of the disease. However, some Mendelian randomization analyses suggested that genetically determined uric acid was not associated with AD risk. Existing research results are contradictory due to the high inconsistency of the studies, the selection of subjects, and other factors. UA also showed a strong association with cognitive function, and there appeared to be a gender-selective neuroprotective action. Due to its potent antioxidant properties, the low uric acid level may contribute to oxidative stress to accelerate disease progression. But some preclinical data showed a possibility that in some special cases, UA had a prooxidant properties. The possibility was raised in the discussion of the underlying mechanism that both the low uric acid level and the rapidly progressive course of the disease were the consequence of malnutrition. This paper reviews recent advances in the study of SUA and AD which offers the possibility of new biomarker, new prevention, and treatment strategies for Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract
Objective Interleukin 33 (IL-33) is a key cytokine involved in inflammation and oxidative stress. The significance of serum IL-33 levels on the prognosis of patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) has not been well studied. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a relationship between the serum IL-33 level and the prognosis of patients with ICH upon admission. Methods A total of 402 patients with confirmed ICH were included in this study. Their demographic data, medical history, laboratory data, imaging data, and clinical scores on admission were collected. At the same time, enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) was used to detect the serum IL-33 levels of patients. The prognosis of patients was evaluated by mRS scale after 3 months, and mRS > 2 was defined as poor prognosis. Results Among 402 patients with ICH, the number of patients with good prognosis and poor prognosis after 3 months was 148 and 254, respectively. Compared with the ICH group with poor prognosis, the ICH group with good prognosis had lower baseline NHISS scores (p = 0.039) and hematoma volume (p = 0.025) and higher GCS scores (p < 0.001) and serum IL-33 levels (p < 0.001). The results of linear correlation analysis showed that serum IL-33 levels were significantly negatively correlated with baseline NHISS scores (r = −0.224, p = 0.033) and hematoma volume (r = −0.253, p = 0.046) but were significantly positively correlated with baseline GCS scores (r = 0.296, p = 0.020). The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis showed that the sensitivity and specificity of serum IL-33 level in evaluating the prognosis of ICH were 72.1% and 74.3%, respectively. A cut-off value of serum IL-33 level < 109.3 pg/mL may indicate a poor prognosis for ICH. Conclusions Serum IL-33 level on admission may be a prognostic indicator of ICH, and its underlying mechanism needs further study.

Abstract
Objective Inflammation is one of the key mechanisms involved in functional impairment after stroke. Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is an important inflammatory molecule in the body. The purpose of our study was to determine the correlation between ICAM-1 and the prognosis of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Methods 286 AIS patients treated at Beijing Tiantan Hospital were continuously included in the study. The demographic data of the patients were collected, and the fasting blood within 24 hours of admission was collected to detect the clinical indicators. The functional prognosis was measured using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) 3 months after stroke. The poor prognosis is defined as mRS ≥ 3. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to determine the serum ICAM-1 levels. Results The serum ICAM-1 levels of patients with poor prognosis were significantly higher than that of patients with good prognosis (144.2 ± 14.8 vs 117.5 ± 12.1 pg/ml). Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis showed that the sensitivity and specificity of serum ICAM-1 for predicting the prognosis of AIS were 74% and 76%, respectively. In logistic regression analysis, the serum ICAM-1 level is still an independent predictor of poor prognosis (odds ratio [OR]: 0.52; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.318-0.839). Conclusions Higher serum ICAM-1 levels on admission in AIS patients might increase the risk of poor prognosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cognitive impairment is a common complication after stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA). The relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is controversial. This study evaluated the association of different SUA levels in the normal range and PSCI at 3 months. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 1523 patients with ischemic stroke/TIA were recruited from the Impairment of Cognition and Sleep (ICONS) subgroup of the China National Stroke Registry-3 (CNSR-3). SUA concentration was assessed at baseline. Global cognitive status was evaluated using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). The main clinical outcome was the incidence of PSCI assessed at 3 months after stroke/TIA. The association between SUA status and the risk of PSCI was assessed with multiple regression models adjusted for potential covariates. RESULTS Among the 1523 patients (1391 (91.33%) stroke patients and 132 (8.67%) TIA patients), 747 (49.05%) patients had PSCI at 3 months. Compared to the reference group, there was an increased risk of PSCI in males with SUA levels in the first (OR=1.76) and fourth quartiles (OR=1.47). A U-shaped association between SUA levels and the incidence of PSCI with an inflection point of 297 mmol/L was also found in males. However, there was no association between SUA levels and PSCI in females. CONCLUSION The association between SUA and PSCI differed between males and females. In males, both low and high SUA levels were associated with relatively higher incidences of PSCI, supporting a U-shaped association between SUA levels and PSCI.

Abstract
Objective Interleukin-37 (IL-37) is a new cytokine that naturally inhibits inflammation. Inflammation plays an important role in acute spinal cord injury (SCI). The purpose of this study is to check whether serum IL-37 can be used as a clinical predictor of SCI. Methods All subjects underwent venipuncture within 24 hours of enrollment to obtain peripheral blood and then centrifuged to obtain serum. The concentration of serum IL-37 was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). One month after the injury, the American Spinal Cord Injury Association (ASIA) impairment scale was used for neurological examination. Results A total of 148 people were included in the study, including 52 normal controls (NC) and 96 patients with acute SCI within 24 hours of onset. The comparison of clinical baseline data (age, gender, BMI: body mass index, smoking, alcohol drinking, CHD: coronary heart disease, HBP: high blood pressure, and DM: diabetes mellitus) between the two groups was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). However, the serum IL-37 concentration of SCI patients was significantly higher than that of the NC group, and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). And with the aggravation of SCI grade, the level of IL-37 increased significantly (p < 0.05). Pearson correlation analysis further showed that serum IL-37 concentration is negatively correlated with AISA motor score (r = −0.327, p < 0.05). Conclusion The serum IL-37 concentration of SCI patients is significantly increased, and it is closely related to the recovery of motor function. We proved for the first time that serum IL-37 has prognostic value in patients with SCI. In addition, serum IL-37 may be used as a prognostic biomarker for SCI.

Abstract

Methods In Neck-Shoulder and Lumbocrural Pain Hospital, Shandong First Medical University & Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, hospitalized or treated acute SCI patients were included in the study as the SCI group (SCI). At the same time, a normal control group (NC) matching the age and sex of the SCI group was recruited in the outpatient clinic. Once the two groups were enrolled, their demographics and clinical characteristics were collected immediately. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect serum CCL21 levels within 24 hours of admission. Three months later, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to test the cognitive function of the population. Results A total of 84 SCI patients and 49 NC populations were eligible for inclusion in the study. There was no significant statistical difference in the demographics and clinical characteristics (age, gender, BMI, TG, LDL-C, FBG, SBP, and DBP) between the two groups (p > 0.05). Compared with the NC group, the SCI group had a higher serum CCL21 level (p < 0.001) and a lower MoCA score (p < 0.001). Serum CCL21 level in SCI was negatively correlated with MoCA score (p = 0.023). Multivariable analyses showed that serum CCL21 level is an independent prognostic factor of cognitive impairment in SCI. Conclusions MoCA score has a linear relationship with serum CCL21 quartile, and SCI cognitive function has a negative correlation with serum CCL21. Serum CCL21 is an independent risk factor for cognitive impairment after SCI.

Abstract
Objective Neuregulin 1 (NRG 1) is a member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family and is believed to play an important role in neuroplasticity. However, the relationship between NRG 1 and vascular dementia (VaD) is poorly understood. The purpose of this study is to explore the correlation between neuregulin 1 and VaD. Patients and Methods. From October 2018 to September 2020, 93 VaD patients and 79 control populations who attended Liaocheng People's Hospital were included in the study. Baseline characteristics including age, gender, years of education, HDL, LDL, FBG, SBP, and DBP are collected. At the same time, peripheral blood was collected, and the concentration of serum NRG 1 was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). All research subjects received professional cognitive function assessment. Results A total of 93 VaD patients and 79 controls were enrolled. There was no significant difference in age, gender, years of education, HDL, LDL, FBG, SBP, and DBP between the two groups (p > 0.05). However, compared with the control group, VaD patients have lower MoCA and higher serum NRG 1 levels, and the difference is statistically significant (p < 0.001). The correlation analysis of MoCA and baseline characteristics showed that the MoCA score in VaD was significantly negatively correlated with serum NRG 1 (r = −0.374, p = 0.036). The results of multivariate regression showed that the MoCA score of VaD patients was only associated with NRG 1 (β = 0.258, p = 0.012). Conclusions The concentration of serum NRG 1 in VaD patients is significantly increased, which may be an independent risk factor for cognitive impairment in VaD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Neuronal Pentraxin 2 (NPTX2) has recently been widely reported as a novel biomarker for Alzheimer's disease (AD), but its correlation with vascular dementia (VaD) has not been elucidated. This study aimed to explore the correlation between NPTX2 and the cognitive function of VaD patients. METHODS 112 VaD patients and 76 healthy controls were included in the study. Upon admission, clinical baseline data for all subjects were collected. Serum NPTX2 levels were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). At the same time, the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) scale was used to measure cognitive function. Multivariate regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between serum NPTX2 level and the cognitive function of VaD patients. RESULTS Compared with healthy controls, VaD patients had lower serum NPTX2 levels (p < .001). The results of Spearman's correlation analysis showed that serum NPTX2 levels in VaD patients were positively correlated with MoCA scores (r = .347, p = .042). The results of multivariate regression analysis showed that after adjusting for common risk factors, serum NPTX2 levels in VaD patients were still significantly associated with MoCA scores (β = 0.346, p = .039). CONCLUSIONS Serum NPTX2 level was independently associated with cognitive function in patients with VaD. Serum NPTX2 level may be a novel predictor for cognitive function in VaD.

Abstract
Objective Family with sequence similarity 19 member A5 (FAM19A5), a novel chemokine-like peptide, is a secreted protein mainly expressed in the brain. FAM19A5 was recently found to be involved in a variety of neurological diseases; however, its correlation with vascular dementia (VaD) remains unclear. The aim of the study is to explore the association between serum FAM19A5 and cognitive impairment in subjects with VaD. Method 136 VaD subjects and 81 normal controls were recruited in the study. Their demographic and clinical baseline data were collected on admission. All subjects received Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) evaluation, which was used to test their cognitive functions. A sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was applied to detect the serum levels of FAM19A5. Results No significant differences were found between the two groups regarding the demographic and clinical baseline data (p > 0.05). The serum FAM19A5 levels were significantly higher compared to normal controls (p < 0.001). The Spearman correlation analysis indicated that serum FAM19A5 levels and MMSE scores have a significant negative correlation in VaD patients (r = −0.414, <0.001). Further multiple regression analysis indicated that serum FAM19A5 levels were independent risk predictors for cognitive functions in VaD (β = 0.419, p = 0.031). Conclusion The serum FAM19A5 level of VaD patients is significantly increased, which may serve as a biomarker to predict cognitive function of VaD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Elevated serum uric acid (SUA) has been associated with vascular cognitive impairment (CI) in the elderly. However, its relationship with cognitive function in the elderly patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) has not yet been elucidated. OBJECTIVE The cognitive impairment is prevalent in MHD patients. Various insults may contribute to cognitive impairment in patients with MHD. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between SUA and CI in the elderly patients receiving MHD. METHODS A total of 180 elderly MHD subjects from two hospitals were enrolled in our study. Cognitive function domains were evaluated by MMSE at the beginning of the trial. Demographic and clinical characteristics were collected and recorded. RESULTS The subjects were stratified into quartiles according to SUA level. Demographic and clinical characteristics such as age, gender, smoking habit, education year, blood pressure (BP), hemoglobin, albumin, blood glucose (BG), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and serum creatinine (Scr) did not differ dramatically among groups (p > .05). The Q1 group showed the highest MMSE scores, and the Q4 group showed the lowest MMSE sores (p < .05). There was a negative correlation between SUA and MMSE scores (r = -.307, p = .014), and this correlation was independent of demographic and clinical characteristics. CONCLUSIONS Elevated SUA maybe contributes to CI in the elderly MHD patients. SUA level is independent risk for the CI in the elderly MHD patients.
