The earliest known case of frontal sinus osteoma in man

3D facial approximation and endocast analysis of the Mummy of Minirdis (Ancient Egypt, ca. 2,300 Before Present)

The present article offers the facial approximation of the mummy of the ancient Egyptian adolescent named Minirdis (ca. 2300 years BP) by means of anatomical analysis of video-images and through a facial approximation protocol implemented on more historical personages. An evaluation of the mummy's endocast is also offered. A potential diagnosis of Sotos syndrome is cautiously considered but its inherent limitations are detailed. Finally, the methodology is presented as a valuable tool both for bio-historical research and for further studies on normal and pathologic morphologies of the cranio-facial district.

Benign Bone-Forming Tumors

Benign bone-forming tumors comprise osteomas, osteoid osteomas, and osteoblastomas. Osteomas affect a wide age range and are usually discovered incidentally. They occur predominantly in the craniofacial skeleton and are classically composed of compact bone. Osteoid osteomas and osteoblastomas are painful lesions occurring in young patients. They are morphologically similar and characterized by FOS gene rearrangement and c-FOS expression at a protein level. Osteoid osteomas are usually smaller than 2 cm in maximum dimension with limited growth potential; osteoblastomas are larger than 2 cm and may be locally aggressive. Histologically both are composed of anastomosing trabeculae of woven bone.

Paleopathological study of a podal osteochondroma from the prehistoric Hypogeum of Calaforno (Sicily)

In this article, we report a case of isolated podal osteochondroma from the prehistoric Hypogeum of Calaforno (Giarratana, Ragusa, Sicily). Although the phalanx exhibiting the benign tumoral mass comes from a context featuring several commingled remains, the very good state of preservation of this bone allowed us to perform a comprehensive study of the neoplasm by applying a multidisciplinary approach encompassing archeology, morphology, stereomicroscopy, and radiology. The results from this very ancient specimen have been assessed in the light of the available paleopathological literature and clinical implications currently encountered in modern patients.
