Allelopathic Effect of Eucalyptus citriodora Essential Oil and Its Potential Use as Bioherbicide

From Leaves to Reproductive Organs: Chemodiversity and Chemophenetics of Essential Oils as Important Tools to Evaluate Piper mollicomum Kunth Chemical Ecology Relevance in the Neotropics

Piper mollicomum Kunth (Piperaceae) plays a vital role in the preservation of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest by contributing to the regeneration of deforested areas. Recent scientific investigations have analyzed the chemical constituents and seasonal dynamics of essential oils (EO) from various Piper L. species, highlighting the need to elucidate their chemical-ecological interactions. This study aims to expand the chemical-ecological knowledge of this important taxon in neotropical forests, using P. mollicomum as a model. The methodologies employed include the collection of plant material, EO extraction by hydrodistillation, analysis of EO by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID), recording the frequency of visits by potential pollinators and microclimatic variables, and by conducting calculations of chemodiversity and chemophenetic indices. Chemical analyses indicated that the diversity of EO and environmental factors are linked to the activities of potential pollinators. In the Tijuca Forest, P. mollicomum revealed significant interactions between its volatile constituents and microclimatic variables, showing that the chemodiversity of the leaves and reproductive organs correlates with pollinator visitation. Additionally, a notable difference in chemical evenness was observed between these vegetative structures. The chemophenetic indices by Ramos and Moreira also revealed correlations with chemical diversity.

Hemi-synthesis of novel chiral benzodiazepine derivatives from Eucalyptus citriodora essential oil: 2D NMR experiments and differential scanning calorimetry study of diastereoisomers

An efficient in situ condensation of citronellal, the main constituent of Eucalyptus citriodora essential oil (51%), with different amine derivatives of 2,3-diaminomaleonitrile and 3-[(2-aminoaryl)amino]dimedone has led to novel chiral benzodiazepine structures. All reactions were precipitated in ethanol and pure products were obtained in good yields (58-75%) without any purification. The synthesized benezodiazepines were characterized by spectroscopic techniques, namely 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, 2D NMR and FTIR. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and HPLC were used to confirm the formation diastereomeric mixtures of benzodiazepine derivatives.

Chemical composition and allelopathic potential of Schinus molle L. (Anacardiaceae) essential oils against common weeds of wheat crop

This study aims to determine the chemical composition of essential oil (EO) extracted from the aerial parts of Schinus molle L., as well as its phytotoxicity on germination and seedling growth against some invasive weed species of cereal crops and wheat (Triticum durum, cultivar Chen'S). Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified 51 components (representing 95.26% of the total EO composition). Shyobunone (10.14%), 1-phellandrene (9.63%), α-cadinol (7.46%), δ-cadinene (7.45%), and germacrene D (7.09%) were the most abundant compounds. The effect of EO on weed species germination, root and shoot growth was moderate to strong. When 0.02% and 0.03% of the oil were applied, EO had a strong phytotoxic effect, resulting in 100% failure of Bromus rigidus germination. In addition to determining the responsible compound, the observed phytotoxicity suggestedthat S. molle essential oil could be used as an environmentally friendly biopesticide.

The Ethnopharmacology, Phytochemistry and Bioactivities of the Corymbia Genus (Myrtaceae)

Plants have been vital to human survival for aeons, especially for their unique medicinal properties. Trees of the Eucalyptus genus are well known for their medicinal properties; however, little is known of the ethnopharmacology and bioactivities of their close relatives in the Corymbia genus. Given the current lack of widespread knowledge of the Corymbia genus, this review aims to provide the first summary of the ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry and bioactivities of this genus. The Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed and Google Scholar databases were searched to identify research articles on the biological activities, phytochemistry and ethnomedical uses of Corymbia species. Of the 115 Corymbia species known, 14 species were found to have ethnomedical uses for the leaves, kino and/or bark. Analysis of the references obtained for these 14 Corymbia spp. revealed that the essential oils, crude extracts and compounds isolated from these species possess an array of biological activities including anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-protozoal, anti-viral, larvicidal, insecticidal, acaricidal, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-cancer and anti-diabetic activities, highlighting the potential for this under-studied genus to provide lead compounds and treatments for a host of medical conditions.

Unveiling the efficacy of pre-emergent application of young Eucalyptus globulus leaves as a weed control strategy: Bridging macroscopic effects and cellular responses

Allelopathy, the inhibition of neighbouring plant growth by certain plants, can be particularly useful if applied in a targeted way for weed management. So, this study aimed to assess and characterize the herbicidal activity of fresh and dried leaves from young Eucalyptus globulus Labill. trees applied as a soil amendment. For this, fresh and dried leaves (FL and DL, respectively) were incorporated into the soil at different concentrations (0, 1, 5, and 10% w/w), where Portulaca oleracea L. seeds were sown. After 5 weeks of exposure, results revealed that the soil incorporation of DL at 10% (w/w) presented the strongest herbicidal properties, inhibiting seed germination by 63% and inducing the loss of cell viability. To unravel the possible mode of action and the main targets at both cellular and subcellular levels, an in vitro experiment was performed. Purslane seeds were sown in a nutritive medium containing different dilutions of an aqueous extract prepared with dried eucalyptus leaves. After 5 days of exposure, germinated seedlings were processed for transmission electron microscopy and histological analyses as well as for reactive oxygen species (ROS) in vivo detection by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Results revealed that the allelochemical release from DL induced ROS overproduction, resulting in the loss of cell integrity and organization, which was characterized by damage to several cellular sub-structures, along with enhanced accumulation of lipid droplets. Overall, the incorporation of DL into the soil can represent a sustainable alternative to reduce synthetic herbicide application and subsequent environmental contamination.

Aloe Vera coated Dextran Sulfate/Chitosan nanoparticles (Aloe Vera @ DS/CS) encapsulating Eucalyptus essential oil with antibacterial potent property

The goal of this work is to encapsulate Eucalyptus staigeriana essential oil in biopolymer matrices, to optimize the biological effects and the antibacterial properties of this oil. In this study, Eucalyptus extract was encapsulated in Aloe Vera coated Dextran Sulfate/Chitosan nanoparticles to form a hydrogel with potent properties. In this study, Eucalyptus extract was loaded on to Aloe Vera coated Dextran Sulphate/Chitosan nanoparticles to obtain a nano-hydrogel with potent properties. The characterization of nanoparticles was evaluated using transmission and scanning electron microscopes, dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and antibacterial activity. The E. staigeriana release profile from the prepared nanoparticles was studied in vitro at a pH of 7.4. The results showed that this nano-carrier controls Eucalyptus release. Aloe Vera coated Dextran Sulfate/Chitosan nanoparticles encapsulated with E. staigeriana inhibited the bacteria by 47.27%. These investigations concluded that E. staigeriana loaded Aloe Vera coated Dextran Sulfate/Chitosan hydrogel could be used as a powerful dressing material to accelerate wound healing.

Photodynamic inactivation of multidrug-resistant bacteria in wastewater effluent using green phytochemicals as a natural photosensitizer

The control of multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRB) is a great challenge in the 21st century. Photodynamic treatment (PDT) is one of the promising approaches to control MDRB. In the process, powerful oxidants such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced, which cause cytotoxic damage and cell death of bacteria. This study examined a new and environment-friendly strategy for the photodynamic inactivation of two MDRB (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) and total coliform (TC) in wastewater effluent using two phytochemicals, pyrogallol (PGL) and terpinolene (TPN), along with white and blue light-emitting diode (LED) light. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of the phytochemicals confirmed the presence of different phenolic and aromatic compounds, which can enhance the generation of ROS alongside inactivating the bacterial cells. In the PDT process, white LED light was more active in controlling MDRB than blue LED light. After 80 min irradiation with white LED light (17 mW/cm²), the MDRB bacteria were eradicated completely at a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) dose (0.156 mg/mL for E. coli and 0.078 mg/mL for S. aureus) of PGL. In addition, light intensity was an important parameter in photodynamic disinfection. The TC in the secondary effluent was inactivated completely by both phytochemicals after 60 min of exposure to white LED light with an intensity of 80 mW/cm². The photosensitizing activity of phytochemicals was analyzed by a bactericidal and imidazole-RNO assay. These assays showed that PGL contributed to the generation of •OH radicals, whereas TPN produced ¹O₂ in the PDT process. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed bacterial cell disruption after treatment. Overall, PDT using the phytochemicals as PS is a sustainable approach to control the MDRB and TC in wastewater successfully.

Achievements, Developments and Future Challenges in the Field of Bioherbicides for Weed Control: A Global Review

The intrusion of weeds into fertile areas has resulted in significant global economic and environmental impacts on agricultural production systems and native ecosystems, hence without ongoing and repeated management actions, the maintenance or restoration of these systems will become increasingly challenging. The establishment of herbicide resistance in many species and unwanted pollution caused by synthetic herbicides has ushered in the need for alternative, eco-friendly sustainable management strategies, such as the use of bioherbicides. Of the array of bioherbicides currently available, the most successful products appear to be sourced from fungi (mycoherbicides), with at least 16 products being developed for commercial use globally. Over the last few decades, bioherbicides sourced from bacteria and plant extracts (such as allelochemicals and essential oils), together with viruses, have also shown marked success in controlling various weeds. Despite this encouraging trend, ongoing research is still required for these compounds to be economically viable and successful in the long term. It is apparent that more focused research is required for (i) the improvement of the commercialisation processes, including the cost-effectiveness and scale of production of these materials; (ii) the discovery of new production sources, such as bacteria, fungi, plants or viruses and (iii) the understanding of the environmental influence on the efficacy of these compounds, such as atmospheric CO₂, humidity, soil water stress, temperature and UV radiation.

Nanoemulsions containing some plant essential oils as promising formulations against Culex pipiens (L.) larvae and their biochemical studies

The chemical composition of cypress, lavender, lemon eucalyptus, and tea tree oils has been investigated using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). These oils were tested for larvicidal activity against Culex pipiens alongside their nanoemulsions (NEs) and conventional emulsifiable concentrates (ECs). Oil-in-water (O/W) NEs preparation was based on a high-energy ultra-sonication technique. The effect of independent variables of preparation on the different outputs was studied using the response surface method to obtain the optimum preparation technique. The droplet sizes of prepared NEs were significantly different (71.67, 104.55, 211.07, and 70.67 for cypress, lavender, lemon eucalyptus, and Tea tree NEs, respectively). The zeta potentials of NEs were recorded to have a high negatively charge (-28.4, -22.2, -23.6, and - 22.3 mV for cypress, lavender, lemon eucalyptus, and tea tree NEs, respectively). The results showed that the tea tree oil has the most significant effect with LC₅₀ = 60.02 and 57.10 mg/L after 24 and 48 h of exposure, respectively. In comparison, cypress oil proved the lowest toxicity with LC₅₀ values of 202.24 and 180.70 mg/L after 24 and 48 h, respectively. However, lavender oil does not show any effect against larvae at tested concentrations. In addition, pure oil exhibited the lowest larvicidal activity. However, the EC of all tested insecticides slightly improved the toxic action against the larvae. While the NEs showed significantly high toxicity compared to the EO and EC. An in vivo assessment of acetylcholine esterase (AChE), adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase), and gamma-aminobutyric acid transaminase (GABA-T) revealed that the NEs exhibited higher activity than the pure oils and ECs. This work describes these oils with potential use against C. pipiens larvae as eco-friendly products.

Terpinolene as an enhancer for ultrasonic disinfection of multi-drug-resistant bacteria in hospital wastewater

The present study reports for the first time, a novel disinfection method that combines ultrasonication with a natural biocide terpinolene to inhibit tough and opportunistic antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) microorganisms isolated from hospital wastewater treatment plant (HWWTP). The enhancement of the disinfection process was evaluated for the effect of ultrasonication power, operating temperature, and inoculum size. A hybrid methodology combining terpinolene with traditional physico-chemical method of acoustic cavitation delivered efficient disinfection of the secondary effluent of field scale HWWTP, amended with a higher inoculum size of multi-drug-resistant coliform bacteria Enterobactor sp., Citrobacter freundii, and Klebsiella pneumonia. A bacterial load of 6.4 log CFU/mL was completely eliminated in 25 min. The present study also reports that due to the hybrid process, a very small concentration of 0.312 mM (0.25 × Minimum Inhibitory Concentration or MBC) of terpinolene was enough to completely disinfect the multi-drug-resistant coliforms. The leakage of intracellular nucleic acids during the disinfection process suggested disruption of cell membrane as the primary mechanism of disinfection followed by disruption of cellular metabolic function measured by respiratory chain dehydrogenase activity. Moreover, this study is the first to prove that terpinolene remained stable even after the cavitation process, thus revealing possibilities of recycling of the natural compound for wastewater disinfection. The results of the present research suggest that using terpinolene as a bio-additive can efficiently eliminate hazardous multi-drug-resistant bacteria and drastically reduce operational time and cost thus rendering it suitable to replace conventional wastewater disinfection.

Solanum linnaeanum Leaves: Chemical Profiling of VOCs and Effects on Seed Germination and Early Growth of Monocots and Dicots

Some Solanaceae plants are a rich source of sesquiterpenoid phytoalexins with allelopathic potential. Powder and aqueous extract obtained from the leaves of Solanum linnaeanum Hepper & P.M.L. Jaeger were used to treat the seeds of three target species (Lolium multiflorum Lam., Sinapis alba L. and Trifolium incarnatum L.). Both matrices were evaluated along with untreated controls to determine their toxicity on germination and seedling growth. The results revealed that the pre-emergence treatments were able to be very effective against all three species in the filter paper test by inhibiting the germination up to 100 %. The effectiveness was reduced by the interaction with soil. Despite this, significant data were obtained, albeit different according to the applied matrix. In general, L. multiflorum was the most sensitive to both the action of the leaf powder and aqueous extract while S. alba was found to be the most resistant to powder activity and T. incarnatum had the strongest response to the extract. For the first time, SPME-GC/MS technique was used to characterize the volatile chemical profile of S. linnaeanum leaves. The analyses highlighted the presence of different classes of compounds including terpenoids and sesquiterpenoids potentially useful in the fight against noxious plants both in natural and cultivated ecosystems.

Untargeted metabolomic profiling of fresh and dried leaf extracts of young and mature Eucalyptus globulus trees indicates differences in the presence of specialized metabolites

Aqueous extracts from Eucalyptus globulus leaves contain a wide variety of specialized metabolites, mainly polyphenols and appreciable amounts of volatile compounds, which are responsible for their diverse biological activities, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and allelopathic features. For this reason, several studies have been conducted to explore the composition of E. globulus leaf extracts for multiple therapeutic and commercial applications. However, so far, the available bibliographic reports only refer to the chemical composition of extracts prepared with leaves from mature trees, leaving much to clarify about the composition of juvenile eucalyptus leaf extracts. Furthermore, there is no consensus regarding the type of leaves, fresh or dried ones, to be used in the extraction procedure, considering the highest recovery of biologically active compounds. In this sense, this study aimed to characterize the chemical composition of aqueous extracts prepared with fresh and dried leaves from young and mature E. globulus trees. For this, leaf biomass from young and mature E. globulus trees was collected in three distinct places from a forest area, and after oven-drying a portion of the leaves, an extraction in hot water was carried out, followed by GC-MS and HPLC-MS/MS analyses. The results revealed that the maturity of eucalyptus trees and biomass drying significantly influenced the volatile and non-volatile composition of the aqueous extracts. Accordingly, while fresh leaf extracts of young trees had great levels of hydrolysable tannins, extracts prepared with fresh leaves from mature trees presented a wide range of terpenes. When dried leaf material was used, extracts had notorious contents of amino acids derivatives, C₁₃ norisoprenoids, fatty and other organic acids. Overall, this study showed, for the first time, that plant maturity (young vs mature) and pre-processing (fresh vs dried) of foliar biomass of E. globulus trees need to be considered in the preparation of leaf aqueous extracts depending on the desired purposes, since major changes in what regards biologically active compounds were found.

Herbicidal Effects and Cellular Targets of Aqueous Extracts from Young Eucalyptus globulus Labill. Leaves

Eucalyptus globulus Labill. is a widespread exotic species that contributes to the formation of fire-prone environments, a great concern under climate change conditions. Therefore, sustainable practices to help locals managing eucalyptus stands are needed. In this perspective, harnessing eucalyptus’ specialized metabolism as a source of allelochemicals can be a promising approach for weed control. Thus, the main goals of this work were to evaluate the herbicidal potential of post-fire regenerated E. globulus leaves against Portulaca oleracea L. and to unravel the physiological mechanisms behind this phytotoxic action. For this, aqueous extracts of fresh (FLE; 617 g FW L⁻¹) or oven-dried leaves (DLE; 250 g DW L⁻¹) were foliar-sprayed at different dilutions in purslane seedlings. After five weeks, results revealed that DLE at the highest dose detained the greatest herbicidal activity, affecting purslane growth and cellular viability. Moreover, biochemical data pointed towards an overproduction of reactive oxygen species, causing harsh oxidative damage in roots, where the upregulation of important cellular players, like sugars, amino acids, and proline, was not able to reestablish redox homeostasis. Overall, this study proved that dried leaves from young E. globulus had potent herbicidal properties against P. oleracea and can represent a feasible strategy for weed management.

Hormones induce the metabolic growth and cytotoxin production of Microcystis aeruginosa under terpinolene stress

Several organic compounds released into the aquatic environment have a detrimental impact on humans and other organisms. There is a lack of knowledge about natural hormones and herbicides on non-target organisms, including cyanobacteria. In this study, the response of Microcystis aeruginosa to four phytohormones, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA; 10^-5), zeatin (ZT; 10^-5), abscisic acid (ABA; 10^-7), and brassinolide (BRL; 10^-9 mol/L), exposed to terpinolene (TPN; (0.44, 0.88, 1.17, or 1.62 mmol/L) at the cellular and genetic levels were investigated. The results showed that TPN could inhibit the growth and photosynthetic activities and stimulate microcystins (MCs) of M. aeruginosa at various levels through the co-occurrence of oxidative stress, antioxidant defense activities, and an imbalance of the antioxidative system. Hormones played critical roles in the growth promotion and photosynthetic activity by enhancing the antioxidant defense mechanisms and MCs production of M. aeruginosa under TPN stress in both hormone and TPN dose-dependent manner. The growth performance and photosynthetic activities of M. aeruginosa were significant with IAA (p < 0.01) and BSL (p < 0.05) compared to ZT and ABA, as TPN concentrations increased. Hormones stimulated the MCs production significantly BSL (p < 0.05) at various levels and protected the cells against TPN-induced oxidative stress and expression of mcyB and mcyD genes involve in MCs synthesis. Our results indicated that hormone contamination in eutrophic lakes might increase the risk of Microcystis aeruginosa bloom and microcystin production with the TPN association.

Monoterpenes: Essential Oil Components with Valuable Features

Medicinal plants have a wide range of secondary metabolites including monoterpene. These volatile compounds are the main components of essential oils, belonging to the isoprenoid group and possessing valuable features for plants and humans. This review provides comprehensive information on chemical structures and classification of monoterpenes. It describes their biosynthesis pathways and introduces plant families and species rich in noteworthy monoterpenes. Bio-activities, pharmacological and pesticide effects as well as their mechanism of action are reported. Applications of these compounds in various industries are also included.

Phytotoxic Effects and Mechanism of Action of Essential Oils and Terpenoids

Weeds are one of the major constraints in crop production affecting both yield and quality. The excessive and exclusive use of synthetic herbicides for their management is increasing the development of herbicide-resistant weeds and is provoking risks for the environment and human health. Therefore, the development of new herbicides with multitarget-site activity, new modes of action and low impact on the environment and health are badly needed. The study of plant–plant interactions through the release of secondary metabolites could be a starting point for the identification of new molecules with herbicidal activity. Essential oils (EOs) and their components, mainly terpenoids, as pure natural compounds or in mixtures, because of their structural diversity and strong phytotoxic activity, could be good candidates for the development of new bioherbicides or could serve as a basis for the development of new natural-like low impact synthetic herbicides. EOs and terpenoids have been largely studied for their phytotoxicity and several evidences on their modes of action have been highlighted in the last decades through the use of integrated approaches. The review is focused on the knowledge concerning the phytotoxicity of these molecules, their putative target, as well as their potential mode of action.

Toxic effects of terpinolene on Microcystis aeruginosa: Physiological, metabolism, gene transcription, and growth effects

Bioherbicide terpinolene is widely employed in the agricultural field because of its unique phytotoxic properties. However, little is known about the toxicity of bioherbicide on harmful algal blooms (HABs) and its mechanisms. Therefore, in this study, the inhibiting effect of bioherbicide terpinolene on the growth and physiological change of Microcystis aeruginosa was determined. Results showed that the cell density and photosynthetic activity of microalgae were significantly inhibited by terpinolene. Activities of nitrate reductase (NR) and glutamine synthetase (GS) were decreased separately by 25.38% and 42.75% after 4 d of exposure to 1.47 mM terpinolene, suggesting the inhibiting effect of terpinolene on algal nitrogen metabolism. However, the transcript abundance of genes related to membrane protein cytochrome c oxidase subunit II (COX II) and ATP-binding cassette transporters (ABC transporter) were enhanced separately by 3.15 and 1.69-fold compared with control, suggesting the resistance response of cells to terpinolene stress. Additionally, terpinolene not only increased the content of endogenous phytohormones including indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), zeatin, and brassinolide, but also inhibited the expression of genes related to calcium-binding protein (CaBPs), one kind of calcium (Ca²⁺) sensors, suggesting its regulation on algal signal molecules. These findings helped to understand the ecotoxicity of terpinolene and guide the rational use of bioherbicide in agriculture.

Comparison Among Five Eucalyptus Species Based on Their Leaf Contents of Some Primary and Secondary Metabolites

Background:

Eucalyptus belongs to the Myrtaceae family. It is the most planted hardwood forest crop worldwide, representing a global renewable resource of fiber, pharmaceuticals and energy.

Objective:

To compare the five species, E. maidenii, E. robusta, E. citriodora, E. tereticornis and E. camaldulensis, seeking for the richest source of nutrients and pharmaceuticals.

Methodology:

Eucalyptus samples were subjected to some chemical determinations for both primary and secondary metabolites to verify their nutritional and pharmaceutical importance related to different extracts. GC-MS analysis was applied to detect the presence of some individual phenolic constituents in their leaves.

Results:

E. robusta recorded the maximum contents of carbohydrates (40.07%) and protein (31.91%). While E. camaldulensis contained the highest contents of total phenolic compounds (46.56 mg/g), tannins (40.01 mg/g) and antioxidant activities assayed by the phosphomolybednum method (57.60 mg/g), followed by E. citridora. However, E. tereticornis exhibited the highest reducing power ability (151.23 mg/g). The GC-MS highlighted 20 phenolic constituents and antioxidants which varied in their abundance in Eucalyptus leaves, 8 individual phenolics (hydroquinone, hesperitin, pyrogallol, resorcinol, protocatechuic acid, naringenin, chlorogenic acid and catechin) were maximally recorded with E. camaldulensis and secondly, with E. citridora in case of at least 5 components. Nevertheless, gallic and quinic acids were more abundant in the leaves of E. tereticornis, which may explain its high corresponding reducing powers.

Conclusion:

Acetone-water combination has enhanced phenolics extraction from Eucalyptus tissues. This is the first report aiming to compare between the aforementioned Eucalyptus species highlighting either their nutritional or medicinal importance.

The use of natural products that can serve as natural herbicides and insecticides is a promising direction because of their greater safety for humans and environment. Secondary metabolites of plants that are toxic to plants and insects-allelochemicals-can be used as such products. Woody plants can produce allelochemicals, but they are studied much less than herbaceous species. Meanwhile, there is a problem of interaction of woody species with neighboring plants in the process of introduction or invasion, co-cultivation with agricultural crops (agroforestry) or in plantation forestry (multiclonal or multispecies plantations). This review describes woody plants with the greatest allelopathic potential, allelochemicals derived from them, and the prospects for their use as biopesticides. In addition, the achievement of and the prospects for the use of biotechnology methods in relation to the allelopathy of woody plants are presented and discussed.
