Preparation and Evaluation of Gallate Ester Derivatives Used as Promising Antioxidant and Antibacterial Inhibitors

Recent Developments and Challenges in Solid-Contact Ion-Selective Electrodes

Solid-contact ion-selective electrodes (SC-ISEs) have the advantages of easy miniaturization, even chip integration, easy carrying, strong stability, and more favorable detection in complex environments. They have been widely used in conjunction with portable, wearable, and intelligent detection devices, as well as in on-site analysis and timely monitoring in the fields of environment, industry, and medicine. This article provides a comprehensive review of the composition of sensors based on redox capacitive and double-layer capacitive SC-ISEs, as well as the ion-electron transduction mechanisms in the solid-contact (SC) layer, particularly focusing on strategies proposed in the past three years (since 2021) for optimizing the performance of SC-ISEs. These strategies include the construction of ion-selective membranes, SC layer, and conductive substrates. Finally, the future research direction and possibilities in this field are discussed and prospected.

Biodegradable ultrafiltration membrane enhanced with anti-biofouling agent from Anacardium occidentale extract

Our research focuses on developing environmentally friendly biodegradable ultrafiltration (UF) membranes for small-scale water purification in areas lacking infrastructure or during emergencies. To address biofouling challenges without resorting to harmful chemicals, we incorporate bio-based extracts, such as methyl gallate from A. occidentale leaves, a Malaysian ulam herb, known for its quorum sensing inhibition (QSI) properties. The methyl gallate enriched extract was purified by solvent partitioning and integrated into cellulose-based UF membranes (0 to 7.5% w w-1) through phase inversion technique. The resulting membranes exhibited enhanced anti-organic fouling and anti-biofouling properties, with flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 87.84 ± 2.00% against bovine serum albumin and FRRs of 76.67 ± 1.89% and 69.57 ± 1.77% against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. The CA/MG-5 membrane showed a 224% improvement in pure water flux (PWF) compared to the neat CA membrane. Our innovative approach significantly improves PWF, presenting an environmentally friendly method for biofouling prevention in UF membrane applications.

Antiultraviolet, Antioxidant, and Antimicrobial Properties and Anticancer Potential of Novel Environmentally Friendly Amide-Modified Gallic Acid Derivatives

Polyphenols and amides isolated from natural products have various biological functions, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer, and antiviral activities, and they are widely used in the fields of food and medicine. In this work, four novel and environmentally friendly amide-modified gallic acid derivatives (AMGADs), which were prepared by using different amides to modify gallic acid (GA) from Polygonaceae plants, displayed good antiultraviolet (anti-UV), antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer effects. Significantly, the anti-UV capability of compounds n1 and n2 was notably superior to that of the UV absorber GA. Moreover, compound n2 possessed better 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH•) scavenging ability and ferric reducing antioxidant power than vitamin C. The antibacterial activities of all AMGADs, with inhibition rates of more than 96.00 and 79.00% for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively, were better than those of GA. Compound n1 had broad-spectrum anticancer activity, and its inhibitory effect on HepG2 cells exceeded that of 5-fluorouracil. The good and rich bioactivities of these AMGADs revealed that combining GA with amides is conducive to improving the activity of GA, and this study laid a good foundation for their scientific application in the fields of food and medicine.

Antifouling improvement in Pb2+ ion selective electrodes by using an environmentally friendly capsaicin derivative

Biofouling is a critical issue for ion selective electrodes (ISE) in complex aqueous systems, seriously compromising the analytical performance of the electrodes (i.e., stability, sensitivity, and lifetime). Herein, an antifouling solid lead ion selective electrode (GC/PANI-PFOA/Pb²⁺-PISM) was successfully prepared by adding propyl 2-(acrylamidomethyl)-3,4,5-trihydroxy benzoate (PAMTB), an environmentally friendly capsaicin derivative, into the ion-selective membrane (ISM). The presence of PAMTB caused no loss in the detection performance of GC/PANI-PFOA/Pb²⁺-PISM (e.g., detection limit (1.9 × 10^-7 M), response slope (28.5 ± 0.8 mV/decade), the response time (20 s), stability (8.6 ± 2.9 μV/s), selectivity and no water layer), whilst imparting an excellent antifouling effect with an antibacterial rate of 98.1% when the content of PAMTB in the ISM was 2.5 wt%. Further, GC/PANI-PFOA/Pb²⁺-PISM maintained stable antifouling properties, excellent potential response, and stability even after soaking in a high-concentration bacterial suspension for 7 days.

Optimization of the Extraction Process and Antioxidant Activity of Polysaccharide Extracted from Centipeda minima

The purpose of this study is to optimize the extraction process and study antioxidant activity of Polysaccharide extracted from Centipeda minima. The Box-Behnken design-response surface methodology was adopted to optimize the extraction process of polysaccharides from Centipeda minima. We purified the crude polysaccharides from Centipeda minima, as well as determined the purity, monosaccharide composition, and molecular weight of the purified fraction. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to analyze the structural features of the polysaccharides. Further, we investigated the antioxidant activities of different fractions of polysaccharides. Consequently, the results showed that the optimum extraction conditions for polysaccharides were: a liquid-solid ratio of 26 mL/g, extraction temperature of 85.5 °C, and extraction time of 2.4 h. Moreover, the yield of polysaccharides measured under these conditions was close to the predicted value. After purification, we obtained four components of Centipeda minima polysaccharides (CMP). The purity, monosaccharide composition, molecular weight, and structural characteristics of CMP were different, but with similar infrared absorption spectra. CMP exhibited a typical infrared absorption characteristic of a polysaccharide. Besides, CMP displayed good antioxidant activity, with potential to scavenge DPPH radical, hydroxyl radical, and superoxide radical. Therefore, this study provides a reference for future research on the structure and biological activity of CMP, and lays a theoretical foundation for food processing and medicinal development of CMP.

Structural Elucidation of Novel Stable and Reactive Metabolites of Green Tea Catechins and Alkyl Gallates by LC-MS/MS

Synthetic gallic acid derivatives are employed as additives in food, personal care products, and pharmaceutical formulations. Despite their widespread use, little is known about their human exposure, health effects, and metabolism. Green tea catechins are natural antioxidants, known for their health-promoting properties, and are also employed as food additives or in personal care products. The objective of this study was to establish metabolic pathways involved in the biotransformation of green tea catechins and synthetic gallate esters. Liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS/MS) was used to elucidate oxidative and methylated metabolites, in addition to glutathione conjugates, formed in vitro using human liver microsomal incubations. The developed method was applied to 14 different parent compounds with a wide range of polarities, for the structural elucidation of many known and novel metabolites. These results serve to inform about the wide variety of possible metabolites formed upon exposure to these compounds.

Preparation and Properties of Environmentally Friendly Marine Antifouling Coatings Based on a Collaborative Strategy

Long-term and green marine antifouling coatings are an important means to prolong the service life of ships and other marine instruments and equipment. To accomplish this, we prepared three new green and high-efficiency antifouling coatings containing phthalimide derivatives inspired by capsaicin (PDIC-AC) by using a collaborative strategy that incorporates self-polishing, fouling repelling, and antifouling properties. Static simulation tests confirmed that the zinc acrylate resin of the PDIC-AC has excellent self-polishing properties due to changes in the roughness, surface free energy, and mass loss. Antifouling tests demonstrated that both PDIC and PDIC-AC possess efficient antibacterial and anti-algal effects. Moreover, marine field tests showed that the PDIC-AC are highly antifouling for at least 9 months, and their antifouling effect is similar to that of an antifouling coating with chlorothalonil (CT-AC). The collaborative strategy in this study can be used to research and develop long-term environmentally friendly antifouling coatings.

Synthesis and Antimicrobial Activity of Ursolic Acid Ester Derivatives

Infections caused by microorganisms are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and natural products continue to be important sources for the discovery of new antimicrobial agents. Ursolic acid is a triterpene with known antibacterial action, being naturally found in plants, such as Jaracanda oxyphylla and Jacaranda caroba (Bignoniaceae). Ursolic acid derivative esters have revealed potential biological activities, such as antitumor, antiviral, and antibacterial activity. In this study, sixteen esters (1-16) were synthesized from ursolic acid using DIC/DMAP and characterized by infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (1 H- and 13 C-NMR) and mass spectrometry. All ursolic acid esters were evaluated against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and the yeast Candida albicans. Six compounds are herein described for the first time (3, 9, 11, 13, 14 and 16) with yields up to 91.6 %. Compounds 11 (3β-(3,4-dimethoxybenzoyl)ursolic acid) and 15 (3β-nicotinoylursolic acid) displayed promising antifungal activity, with inhibition of C. albicans growth of 93.1 and 95.9 %, respectively.
