Abstract
The use of metalated (aza)bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes in synthesis is currently experiencing a renaissance, as evidenced by the numerous reports in the last 5 years that have relied on such intermediates to undergo unique transformations or generate novel fragments. Since their discovery, these species have been demonstrated to participate in a wide range of reactions with carbon and heteroatom electrophiles, as well as metal complexes, to facilitate the rapid diversification of (aza)bicyclo[1.1.0]butane-containing compounds. Key to this is the relative acidity of the bridgehead C-H bonds which promotes facile deprotonation and subsequent functionalization of an unsubstituted position on the carbon framework via the intermediacy of a metalated (aza)bicyclo[1.1.0]butane. Additionally, the late-stage incorporation of deuterium atoms in strained fragments has led to the elucidation of numerous reaction mechanisms that involve strained bicycles. The continued investigation into the inimitable reactivity of metalated bicycles will cement their importance within the field of organometallic chemistry.

Abstract
A new cyclopropane-containing sesquiterpenoid, phellilane L (1), was isolated from the medicinal mushroom Phellinus linteus ("Meshimakobu" in Japanese), a member of the Hymenochaetaceae family and a well-known fungus that is widely used in East Asia. The planar structure of 1 was determined on the basis of spectroscopic analysis. The authors achieved the first total synthesis of 1. Our protecting group-free synthesis features a highly stereoselective one-pot synthesis involving an intermolecular alkylation/cyclization/lactonization strategy for construction of the key cyclopropane-γ-lactone intermediate. Additionally, our synthesis determined the absolute configuration of phellilane L (1).

Abstract
A general mathematical description, mostly in terms of graph theory, is given for reactions of organic chemistry. The corresponding computer program generates all products that can result from a given set of starting materials interacting according to a given set of reaction schemes. Example reactions from combinatorial chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, and mass spectroscopic structure elucidation are considered in detail.

Abstract
The LHASA rules for finding strategic bonds in polycyclic target structures are analyzed with respect to the following question: Do the strategic bonds tend to give the greatest simplification upon disconnection, as measured by recently introduced indices of molecular complexity? The answer is yes, at least for the more general rules. This result implies that the bonds most useful for retrosynthetic disconnection can now be identified by a simple calculation rather than by application of a body of rules. It is concluded that organic synthesis, as far as described by these rules, has a mathematical basis and consequently can be considered a science as well as an art.
