Highly Efficient Carbon Dioxide Electroreduction via DNA-Directed Catalyst Immobilization

Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) is a promising route to up-convert this industrial byproduct. However, to perform this reaction with a small-molecule catalyst, the catalyst must be proximal to an electrode surface. Efforts to immobilize molecular catalysts on electrodes have been stymied by the need to optimize the immobilization chemistries on a case-by-case basis. Taking inspiration from nature, we applied DNA as a molecular-scale "Velcro" to investigate the tethering of three porphyrin-based catalysts to electrodes. This tethering strategy improved both the stability of the catalysts and their Faradaic efficiencies (FEs). DNA-catalyst conjugates were immobilized on screen-printed carbon and carbon paper electrodes via DNA hybridization with nearly 100% efficiency. Following immobilization, a higher catalyst stability at relevant potentials is observed. Additionally, lower overpotentials are required for the generation of carbon monoxide (CO). Finally, high FE for CO generation was observed with the DNA-immobilized catalysts as compared to the unmodified small-molecule systems, as high as 79.1% FE for CO at -0.95 V vs SHE using a DNA-tethered catalyst. This work demonstrates the potential of DNA "Velcro" as a powerful strategy for catalyst immobilization. Here, we demonstrated improved catalytic characteristics of molecular catalysts for CO2 valorization, but this strategy is anticipated to be generalizable to any reaction that proceeds in aqueous solutions.

Self-Assembled Nanoscale Manganese Oxides Enhance Carbon Capture by Diatoms

Continuous CO₂ emissions from human activities increase atmospheric CO₂ concentrations and affect global climate change. The carbon storage capacity of the ocean is 20-fold higher than that of the land, and diatoms contribute to approximately 40% of carbon capture in the ocean. Manganese (Mn) is a major driver of marine phytoplankton growth and the marine carbon pump. Here, we discovered self-assembled manganese oxides (MnO_x) for CO₂ fixation in a diatom-based biohybrid system. MnO_x shared key features (e.g., di-μ-oxo-bridged Mn-Mn) with the Mn₄CaO₅ cluster of the biological catalyst in photosystem II and promoted photosynthesis and carbon capture by diatoms/MnO_x. The CO₂ capture capacity of diatoms/MnO_x was 1.5-fold higher than that of diatoms alone. Diatoms/MnO_x easily allocated carbon into proteins and lipids instead of carbohydrates. Metabolomics showed that the contents of several metabolites (e.g., lysine and inositol) were positively associated with increased CO₂ capture. Diatoms/MnO_x upregulated six genes encoding photosynthesis core proteins and a key rate-limiting enzyme (Rubisco, ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase) in the Calvin-Benson-Bassham carbon assimilation cycle, revealing the link between MnO_x and photosynthesis. These findings provide a route for offsetting anthropogenic CO₂ emissions and inspiration for self-assembled biohybrid systems for carbon capture by marine phytoplankton.

Considering the Influence of Polymer-Catalyst Interactions on the Chemical Microenvironment of Electrocatalysts for the CO2 Reduction Reaction

The electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) is an attractive method for capturing intermittent renewable energy sources in chemical bonds, and converting waste CO₂ into value-added products with a goal of carbon neutrality. Our group has focused on developing polymer-encapsulated molecular catalysts, specifically cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc), as active and selective electrocatalysts for the CO₂RR. When CoPc is adsorbed onto a carbon electrode and encapsulated in poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP), its activity and reaction selectivity over the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are enhanced by three synergistic effects: a primary axial coordination effect, a secondary reaction intermediate stabilization effect, and an outer-coordination proton transport effect. We have studied multiple aspects of this system using electrochemical, spectroscopic, and computational tools. Specifically, we have used X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements to confirm that the pyridyl residues from the polymer are axially coordinated to the CoPc metal center, and we have shown that increasing the σ-donor ability of nitrogen-containing axial ligands results in increased activity for the CO₂RR. Using proton inventory studies, we showed that proton delivery in the CoPc-P4VP system is controlled via a proton relay through the polymer matrix. Additionally, we studied the effect of catalyst, polymer, and graphite powder loading on CO₂RR activity and determined best practices for incorporating carbon supports into catalyst-polymer composite films.In this Account, we describe these studies in detail, organizing our discussion by three types of microenvironmental interactions that affect the catalyst performance: ligand effects of the primary and secondary sphere, substrate transport of protons and CO₂, and charge transport from the electrode surface to the catalyst sites. Our work demonstrates that careful electroanalytical study and interpretation can be valuable in developing a robust and comprehensive understanding of catalyst performance. In addition to our work with polymer encapsulated CoPc, we provide examples of similar surface-adsorbed molecular and solid-state systems that benefit from interactions between active catalytic sites and a polymer system. We also compare the activity results from our systems to other results in the CoPc literature, and other examples of molecular CO₂RR catalysts on modified electrode surfaces. Finally, we speculate how the insights gained from studying CoPc could guide the field in designing other polymer-electrocatalyst systems. As CO₂RR technologies become commercially viable and expand into the space of flow cells and gas-diffusion electrodes, we propose that overall device efficiency may benefit from understanding and promoting synergistic polymer-encapsulation effects in the microenvironment of these catalyst systems.
