Abstract
Three dipyrromethane-diphosphine ligands containing phenyl (L1H2), ethyl (L2H2) and cyclohexyl (L3H2) groups at their meso positions and their nickel complexes were synthesized and structurally characterized. Treatment of Ph2C(C4H3N)2-1,9-(CH2PPh2)2 (L1H2) with [NiCl2(DME)] gave complex [NiCl2(κ2-P,P-L1H2)] 2a. Conversely, the analogous reactions of L2H2 and L3H2 with [NiCl2(DME)] showed a mixture of products containing both a pyrrolide nitrogen coordinated complex of type [Ni(κ4-P,N,N,P-L)] 3 without an exogenous base and a chelated complex of type 2a. In addition, all three ligands react with [NiCl2(DME)] in the presence of a strong base to give a complex of type 3. Furthermore, a novel binuclear Ni(0) complex bearing L1H2 was characterized by X-ray crystallography. Both complexes 2a and 3 (0.5 mol% of loading) catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of a series of aromatic and aliphatic ketones (20 substrates) to their corresponding secondary alcohols using iPrOH as a hydrogen source in the presence of KOH at 100 °C in 6 h. The kinetic trace of the catalytic reaction shows that the meso-phenyl substituted diphosphine coordinated nickel complexes perform better than the other two ligand coordinated nickel complexes.

Abstract
Catalytic reduction of a representative set of imines, both aldimines and ketimines, to amines has been studied using transfer hydrogenation from 1,4-dicyclohexadiene. Unusually, this has been achieved using s-block pre-catalysts, namely 1-metallo-2-tert-butyl-1,2-dihydropyridines, 2-tBuC5 H5 NM, M(tBuDHP), where M=Li-Cs. Reactions have been monitored in C6 D6 and tetrahydrofuran-d8 (THF-d8 ). A definite trend is observed in catalyst efficiency with the heavier alkali metal tBuDHPs outperforming the lighter congeners. In general, Cs(tBuDHP) is the optimal pre-catalyst with, in the best cases, reactions producing quantitative yields of amines in minutes at room temperature using 5 mol % catalyst. Supporting the experimental study, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations have also been carried out which reveal that Cs has a pathway with a significantly lower rate determining step than the Li congener. In the postulated initiation pathways DHP can act as either a base or as a surrogate hydride.

Abstract
The synthesis of imines denotes a cornerstone in organic chemistry. The use of alcohols as renewable substituents for carbonyl-functionality represents an attractive opportunity. Consequently, carbonyl moieties can be in situ generated from alcohols upon transition-metal catalysis under inert atmosphere. Alternatively, bases can be utilized under aerobic conditions. In this context, we report the synthesis of imines from benzyl alcohols and anilines, promoted by KOt Bu under aerobic conditions at room temperature, in the absence of any transition-metal catalyst. A detailed investigation of the radical mechanism of the underlying reaction is presented. This reveals a complex reaction network fully supporting the experimental findings.

Abstract
Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV)-type reduction between benzonitriles and benzylic alcohols under transition-metal-free conditions has been demonstrated for the first time. Using simple KOt-Bu as the base, various benzonitriles can be efficiently reduced by benzylic alcohols via hydrogen transfer reduction, and the resultant phenyl imine can react further with benzylic alcohols to give amides as the final product in which both the alcohols and the nitriles are incorporated. Preliminary mechanistic investigations indicated that the reaction may go through multiple MPV-type hydrogen transfer processes.

Abstract
Catalytic transformation of oxygenated compounds is challenging in f-element chemistry due to the high oxophilicity of the f-block metals. We report here the first Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reduction of carbonyl substrates with uranium-based catalysts, in particular from a series of uranyl(VI) compounds where [UO2(OTf)2] (1) displays the greatest efficiency (OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate). [UO2(OTf)2] reduces a series of aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes and ketones into their corresponding alcohols with moderate to excellent yields, using iPrOH as a solvent and a reductant. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions (80 °C) with an optimized catalytic charge of 2.3 mol % and KOiPr as a cocatalyst. The reduction of aldehydes (1-10 h) is faster than that of ketones (>15 h). NMR investigations clearly evidence the formation of hemiacetal intermediates with aldehydes, while they are not formed with ketones.

Abstract
The first switchable α-olefination and α-alkylation of nitriles with primary alcohols catalyzed by a well-defined base transition-metal Co complex was presented. A broad variety of nitriles and primary alcohols are selectively and efficiently converted to the corresponding products by this method. It is noteworthy that the transformation is environmentally benign and atom efficient with H2 and H2O being the sole byproducts.

Abstract
Iridium(NHC)-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation (TH) of CO2 and inorganic carbonates with glycerol were conducted, demonstrating excellent turnover numbers (TONs) and turnover frequencies (TOFs) for the formation of formate and lactate. Regardless of carbon sources, excellent TOFs of formate were observed (CO2: 10,000 h−1 and K2CO3: 10,150 h−1). Iridium catalysts modified with the triscarbene ligand showed excellent catalytic activity at 200 °C and are a suitable choice for this transformation which requires a high temperature for high TONs of formate. On the basis of the control experiments, the transfer hydrogenation mechanism of CO2 was proposed.

Abstract
A new radical condensation reaction is developed where benzylic alcohols and acetamides are coupled to generate 3-arylpropanamides with water as the only byproduct. The transformation is performed with potassium tert-butoxide as the only additive and gives rise to a variety of 3-arylpropanamides in good yields. The mechanism has been investigated experimentally with labelled substrates, trapping experiments and spectroscopic measurements. The findings indicate a radical pathway where potassium tert-butoxide is believed to serve a dual role as both base and radical initiator. The radical anion of the benzylic alcohol is proposed as the key intermediate, which undergoes coupling with the enolate of the amide to form the new C–C bond. Subsequent elimination to the corresponding cinnamamide and olefin reduction then affords the 3-arylpropanamides. Benzylic alcohols and acetamides are coupled into 3-arylpropanamides by a new radical condensation through the radical anion of the alcohol.![]()

Abstract
In this work, we have synthesized two new [C, C] cyclometalated Ir(iii)-NHC complexes, [IrCp*(C∧C:NHC)Br](1a,b), [Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; NHC = (2-flurobenzyl)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1H-imidazoline-2-ylidene (a); (2-flurobenzyl)-1-(4-formylphenyl)-1H-imidazoline-2-ylidene (b)] via intramolecular C-H bond activation. The molecular structure of complex 1a was determined by X-ray single crystal analysis. The catalytic potentials of the complexes were explored for acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols to carboxylic acids with concomitant hydrogen gas evolution. Under similar experimental conditions, complex 1a was found to be slightly more efficient than complex 1b. Using 0.1 mol% of complex 1a, good-to-excellent yields of carboxylic acids/carboxylates have been obtained for a wide range of alcohols, both aliphatic and aromatic, including those involving heterocycles, in a short reaction time with a low loading of catalyst. Remarkably, our method can produce benzoic acid from benzyl alcohol on a gram scale with a catalyst-to-substrate ratio as low as 1 : 5000 and exhibit a TON of 4550. Furthermore, the catalyst could be recycled at least three times without losing its activity. A mechanism has been proposed based on controlled experiments and in situ NMR study.

Abstract
This work unveils the reactivity patterns, as well as ligand and additive effect on alkali-metal-base-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of ketones. Crucially to this reactivity is the presence of a Lewis acid (alkali cation), as opposed to a simple base effect. With aryl ketones, the observed reactivity order is Na+ >Li+ >K+ , whereas for aliphatic substrates it follows the expected Lewis acidity, Li+ >Na+ >K+ . Importantly, the reactivity pattern can be drastically changed by adding ligands and additives. Kinetic, labelling, and competition experiments as well as DFT calculations suggested that the reaction proceeds through a concerted direct hydride-transfer mechanism, originally suggested by Woodward. The lithium cation was found to be intrinsically more active than heavier congeners, but in the case of aryl ketones a decrease in reaction rate was observed at ≈40 % conversion with lithium cations. Noncovalent-interaction analysis revealed that this deceleration effect originated from specific noncovalent interactions between the aryl moiety of 1-phenylethanol and the carbonyl group of acetophenone, which stabilize the product in the coordination sphere of lithium and thus poison the catalyst. The ligand/additive effect is a complicated phenomenon that includes a combination of several factors, such as the decrease of activation energy by ligation (confirmed by distortion/interaction calculations of N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine, TMEDA) and the change in relative stabilization of reagents and substrates in the solution and the coordination sphere of the metal. Finally, we observed that lithium-base-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation can be further facilitated by the addition of an inexpensive and benign reagent, LiCl, which likely operates by re-initiating the reaction on a new lithium center.

Abstract
An experimental protocol to achieve the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reduction of ketones under mildly basic conditions is reported. The transformation is tolerant of a range of ketone substrates, including O- and S-containing heterocycles, is scalable, and shows potential to be used as a platform to access enantioenriched products. These studies provide a general method for achieving the reduction of ketones under mildly basic conditions and offer an alternative protocol to more well-known Al-based MPV reduction conditions.

Abstract
A practical method for the synthesis of α-chiral amines by alkylation of amines with alcohols in the absence of any transition-metal catalysts has been developed. Under the co-catalysis of a ketone and NaOH, racemic secondary alcohols reacted with Ellman's chiral tert-butanesulfinamide by a hydrogen autotransfer process to afford chiral amines with high diastereoselectivities (up to >99:1). Broad substrate scope and up to a 10 gram scale production of chiral amines were demonstrated. The method was applied to the synthesis of chiral deuterium-labelled amines with high deuterium incorporation and optical purity, including examples of chiral deuterated drugs. The configuration of amine products is found to be determined solely by the configuration of the chiral tert-butanesulfinamide regardless of that of alcohols, and this is corroborated by DFT calculations. Further mechanistic studies showed that the reaction is initiated by the ketone catalyst and involves a transition state similar to that proposed for the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reduction, and importantly, it is the interaction of the sodium cation of the base with both the nitrogen and oxygen atoms of the sulfinamide moiety that makes feasible, and determines the diastereoselectivity of, the reaction.

Abstract
Classical molecular dynamics has been performed with explicit polarization on NaOH aqueous solutions from 0.5 mol L-1 up to 9.7 mol L-1. We adapted a force field of OH- for polarizable simulation in order to reproduce the NaOH structural and thermodynamics properties in aqueous solutions. A good agreement between theoretical and experimental results has been found. Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) intensities issued from molecular dynamics are compared to experimental ones measured on Synchrotron facilities. The structure of the first coordination shell of Na+ has been studied to determine the variation of the oxygen number and hydroxide oxygen around the cation. In addition, Na+-OH- McMillan-Mayer potential issued from molecular dynamics simulations has been calculated and allows for calculating Na+-OH- pair association constant of 0.1 L mol-1, which is in good agreement with the experiments.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in using alcohols as alkylating agents for C-C and C-N bond-forming processes employing mainly TM-catalysts. Although BH-catalysis looks like a green atom economy process since water is the only by-product, it often suffers from one or more drawbacks, such as the use of expensive noble metal complexes, capricious ligands, and toxic organic solvents. Therefore, straightforward, efficient, atom economy and environmentally benign alternative protocols are desirable. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge within the published literature about dehydrative processes developed without TM-catalysts. The most recent contributions to this topic have been reviewed keeping into account the new findings reported in this area. The features, strengths, and limitations of these alcohol-based C-C and C-N bond-forming processes has also been taken into account.

Abstract
The reduction of nitro compounds to the corresponding amines is one of the most utilized catalytic processes in the fine and bulk chemical industry. The latest development of catalysts with cheap metals like Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu has led to their tremendous achievements over the last years prompting their greater application as "standard" catalysts. In this review, we will comprehensively discuss the use of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts based on non-noble 3d-metals for the reduction of nitro compounds using various reductants. The different systems will be revised considering both the catalytic performances and synthetic aspects highlighting also their advantages and disadvantages.
