Abstract
We described a cascade reaction for deracemization of racemic alcohols combining photooxidation and enzymatic reduction under mild conditions without the isolation of intermediate ketones. Using different ketoreductases, a variety of racemic alcohols can be successfully converted into (R)- or (S)-enantiomers in high yields (up to 95%) and stereoselectivity (up to 99%).

Abstract
In this study, we developed a new bienzymatic reaction to produce enantioenriched phenylethanols. In a first step, the recombinant, unspecific peroxygenase from Agrocybe aegerita (rAaeUPO) was used to oxidise ethylbenzene and its derivatives to the corresponding ketones (prochiral intermediates) followed by enantioselective reduction into the desired (R)‐ or (S)‐phenylethanols using the (R)‐selective alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) from Lactobacillus kefir (LkADH) or the (S)‐selective ADH from Rhodococcus ruber (ADH‐A). In a one‐pot two‐step cascade, 11 ethylbenzene derivatives were converted into the corresponding chiral alcohols at acceptable yields and often excellent enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Biocatalysis has an enormous impact on chemical synthesis. The waves in which biocatalysis has developed, and in doing so changed our perception of what organic chemistry is, were reviewed 20 and 10 years ago. Here we review the consequences of these waves of development. Nowadays, hydrolases are widely used on an industrial scale for the benign synthesis of commodity and bulk chemicals and are fully developed. In addition, further enzyme classes are gaining ever increasing interest. Particularly, enzymes catalysing selective C-C-bond formation reactions and enzymes catalysing selective oxidation and reduction reactions are solving long-standing synthetic challenges in organic chemistry. Combined efforts from molecular biology, systems biology, organic chemistry and chemical engineering will establish a whole new toolbox for chemistry. Recent developments are critically reviewed.

Abstract
The combination of gold(I) and enzyme catalysis is used in a two-step approach, including Meyer-Schuster rearrangement of a series of readily available propargylic alcohols followed by stereoselective bioreduction of the corresponding allylic ketone intermediates, to provide optically pure β,β-disubstituted allylic alcohols. This cascade involves a gold N-heterocyclic carbene and an enzyme, demonstrating the compatibility of both catalyst types in aqueous medium under mild reaction conditions. The combination of [1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene][bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-imide]gold(I) (IPrAuNTf2 ) and a selective alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH-A from Rhodococcus ruber, KRED-P1-A12 or KRED-P3-G09) led to the synthesis of a series of optically active (E)-4-arylpent-3-en-2-ols in good yields (65-86 %). The approach was also extended to various 2-hetarylpent-3-yn-2-ol, hexynol, and butynol derivatives. The use of alcohol dehydrogenases of opposite selectivity led to the production of both allyl alcohol enantiomers (93->99 % ee) for a broad panel of substrates.

Abstract
Enzymatic reactions through mononuclear metal hydrides are unknown in nature, despite the prevalence of such intermediates in the reactions of synthetic transition-metal catalysts. If metalloenzymes would react through abiotic intermediates like these, then the scope of enzyme-catalyzed reactions would expand. Here we show that zinc-containing carbonic anhydrase enzymes catalyze hydride transfers from silanes to ketones with high enantioselectivity and report mechanistic data providing strong evidence that the process involves a mononuclear zinc hydride. This work shows that abiotic silanes can act as reducing equivalents in an enzyme-catalyzed process and that monomeric hydrides of electropositive metals, which are typically unstable in protic environments, can be catalytic intermediates in enzymatic processes. Overall, this work bridges a gap between the types of transformations in molecular catalysis and biocatalysis.

Abstract
Deracemisation via chemo-enzymatic or multi-enzymatic approaches is the optimum substitute for kinetic resolution, which suffers from the limitation of a theoretical maximum 50% yield albeit high enantiomeric excess is attainable. This review covers the recent progress in various deracemisation approaches applied to the synthesis of enantiomerically pure alcohols and amines, such as (1) dynamic kinetic resolution, (2) cyclic deracemisation, (3) linear deracemisation (including stereoinversion) and (4) enantioconvergent methods.

Abstract
A series of enantiopure (R)-adamantyl 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diols were successfully synthesized in a straightforward one-step reaction from commercial products with excellent overall yields. The activity of chiral titanium catalyst derived from (R)-3,6,6'-tri(adamantan-1-yl)-[1,1'-binaphthalene]-2,2'-diol ligand, (R)-(2)-Ti, in the enantioselective asymmetric alkylation of aldehydes is significantly enhanced (up to 98% yield and 99% ee).

Abstract
The synthesis of optically pure secondary epoxy alcohols from racemic allylic alcohols using a single whole-cell biocatalyst of recombinant Escherichia coli coexpressing three oxidoreductases is described. The cascade involves the concurrent action of a styrene monooxygenase that catalyzes the formation of the chiral epoxy group, and two alcohol dehydrogenases that fulfil the epimerisation of the hydroxy group. Two sets of alcohol dehydrogenases were each applied to couple with styrene monooxygenase in order to realize the epimerisation in a stereo-complementary manner. Excellent enantio- and diastereo-selectivities were achieved for most of the 12 substrates.

Abstract
Spontaneous electron transport to molecular oxygen led to regeneration of oxidised nicotinamide cofactor in cell lysates that contain an alcohol dehydrogenase, a quinone reductase and a quinone mediator. This concept allows the efficient oxidation of alcohols in the presence of alcohol dehydrogenase-containing E. coli lysates and catalytic amounts of the quinone lawsone.
