Enhanced Catalytic Activity of Platinum Nanoparticles by Exfoliated Metal Hydroxide Nanosheets

An effective bio-inspired synthesis of platinum nanoparticles using Caulerpa sertularioides and investigating their antibacterial and antioxidant activities

In this study, we report the synthesis of platinum nanoparticles (Cs-PtNPs) using an aqueous extract of Caulerpa sertularioides as a reducing agent. Cs-PtNPs were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis. Cs-PtNPs are spherical with a particle size of 6-22 nm. Cs-PtNPs have been shown to have highly effective antioxidant activities with 74% for DPPH, 63% for reducing power, and 59% for total antioxidant at 1 mg/ml, and results were compared with standard L-ascorbic acid. Furthermore, the Cs-PtNPs demonstrated excellent antibacterial activity against the Gram-negative bacteria, Vibrio parahaemolyticus with the highest zone of inhibition (18 mm) at 50 µg/ml. Moreover, Artemia nauplii showed less toxicity when treated with Cs-PtNPs at 150 µg/ml, indicating that the Cs-PtNPs are less toxic and environment friendly.

Platinum Nanoparticles: The Potential Antioxidant in the Human Lung Cancer Cells

Oxidative stress-related conditions associated with lung cells, specifically lung cancer, often lead to a poor prognosis. We hypothesized that platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) can play a role in reversing oxidative stress in human lung adenocarcinoma A549 epithelial lung cell lines. Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) was used to induce oxidative stress in cells, and the ability of PtNPs to lower the oxidative stress in the H₂O₂ treated epithelial lung cell line was determined. The differential capacity of PtNPs to remove H₂O₂ was studied through cell viability, nanoparticle uptake, DNA damage, ROS production, and antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase). Results indicated that a higher concentration of PtNPs exhibited a higher antioxidant capacity and was able to reduce DNA damage and quench ROS production in the presence of 350 µM H₂O₂. All antioxidant enzymes’ activities also increased in the PtNPs treatment. Our data suggested that PtNPs could be a promising antioxidant in the treatment of lung cancer.

Research progress on photocatalytic reduction of CO2 based on LDH materials

Converting CO₂ to renewable fuels or valuable carbon compounds is an effective way to solve the global warming and energy crisis. Compared with other CO₂ conversion methods, photocatalytic reduction of CO₂ is more energy-saving, environmentally friendly, and has a broader application prospect. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) has attracted widespread attention as a two-dimensional material, composed of metal hydroxide layers, interlayer anions and water molecules. This review briefly introduces the basic theory of photocatalysis and the mechanism of CO₂ reduction. The composition and properties of LDH are introduced. The research progress on LDH in the field of photocatalytic reduction of CO₂ is elaborated from six aspects: directly as a catalyst, as a precursor for a catalyst, and by modification, intercalation, supporting with other materials and construction of a heterojunction. Finally, the development prospects of LDH are put forward. This review could provide an effective reference for the development of more efficient and reasonable photocatalysts based on LDH.

Layered double hydroxide-based nanomaterials as highly efficient catalysts and adsorbents

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a class of anion clays consisting of brucite-like host layers and interlayer anions, which have attracted increasing interest in the fields of catalysis/adsorption. By virtue of the versatility in composition, morphology, and architecture of LDH materials, as well as their unique structural properties (intercalation, topological transformation, and self-assembly with other functional materials), LDHs display great potential in the design and fabrication of nanomaterials applied in photocatalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, and adsorption/separation processes. Taking advantage of the structural merits and various control synthesis strategies of LDHs, the active center structure (e.g., crystal facets, defects, geometric and electronic states, etc.) and macro-nano morphology can be facilely manipulated for specific catalytic/adsorbent processes with largely enhanced performances. In this review, the latest advancements in the design and preparation of LDH-based functional nanomaterials for sustainable development in catalysis and adsorption are summarized.
