Abstract
The mechanism of the transition metal manganese complex Mn(PhPNN)(CO)2Br (CA-4) that catalyzed the hydrogenation of the azo (N═N) bond to amines has been investigated using the PBE0 function. The results show that the whole reaction involves three basic processes: (1) the addition of H2 to CA gives IN2, which can hydrogenate the azo (N═N) bond at the later stage; (2) hydrogenation of azobenzene by IN2, which gives 1,2-diphenylhydrazine (PhNHNHPh); and (3) hydrogenation of 1,2-diphenylhydrazine by IN2, which affords aniline (PhNH2). The results suggest that the hydrogenation of CA and hydrogenation of azobenzene by IN2 to afford PhNHNHPh are easy to occur due to the low barriers, and the overall rate-determining step is the formation of IN11 and PhNH2 by breaking the N-N bond in the stage of hydrogenation of 1,2-diphenylhydrazine by IN2, with an energy barrier of 39.1 kcal/mol. The computed results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The mechanism of the azobenzene reaction catalyzed by manganese was analyzed by charge and orbital analysis in detail. The theoretical results provide a deeper understanding of the mechanism and fully explain the experimental facts.

Abstract
Developing more sustainable catalytic processes for preparing N-heterocyclic compounds in a less costly, compact, and greener manner from cheap and readily available reagents is highly desirable in modern synthetic chemistry. Herein, we report a straightforward synthesis of benzimidazoles by reductive coupling of o-dinitroarenes with aldehydes in the presence of molecular hydrogen. An innovative molecular cluster-based synthetic strategy that employs Mo3S4 complexes as precursors have been used to engineer a sulfur-deficient molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-type material displaying structural defects on both the naturally occurring edge positions and along the typically inactive basal planes. By applying this catalyst, a broad range of functionalized 2-substituted benzimidazoles, including bioactive compounds, can be selectively synthesized by such a direct hydrogenative coupling protocol even in the presence of hydrogenation-sensitive functional groups, such as double and triple carbon-carbon bonds, nitrile and ester groups, and halogens as well as diverse types of heteroarenes.

Abstract
Highly stable and thermally robust iron chalcogenide carbonyl clusters Fe3E2(CO)9 (E = S, Se or Te) have been explored for the reduction of nitrobenzene. A 15 min thermal heating of an aqueous solution of nitrobenzene and hydrazine hydrate in the catalytic presence of Fe3E2(CO)9 (E = S, Se or Te) clusters yield average to excellent aniline transformations. Among the S, Se and Te based iron chalcogenised carbonyl clusters, the diselenide cluster was found to be most efficient and produce almost 90% yield of the desired amino product, the disulfide cluster was also found to be significantly active, produce the 85% yield of amino product, while the ditelluride cluster was not found to be active and produced only 49% yield of the desired product. The catalyst can be reused up to three catalytic cycles and it needs to be dried in an oven for one hour prior to reuse for the best results. The developed method is inexpensive, environmentally benign, does not require any precious metal or a high pressure of toxic CO gas and exclusively brings the selective reduction of the nitro group under feasible and inert free conditions. In this study, a strongly feasible method for the reduction of nitrobenzene has been developed through highly stable and thermally robust iron chalcogenide carbonyl clusters Fe3E2(CO)9 (E = S, Se or Te).![]()

Abstract
Cubane-type Mo3S4 cluster hydrides decorated with phosphine ligands are active catalysts for the transfer hydrogenation of nitroarenes to aniline derivatives in the presence of formic acid (HCOOH) and triethylamine (Et3N). The process is highly selective and most of the cluster species involved in the catalytic cycle have been identified through reaction monitoring. Formation of a dihydrogen cluster intermediate has also been postulated based on previous kinetic and theoretical studies. However, the different steps involved in the transfer hydrogenation from the cluster to the nitroarene to finally produce aniline remain unclear. Herein, we report an in-depth computational investigation into this mechanism. Et3N reduces the activation barrier associated with the formation of Mo-HHOOCH dihydrogen species. The global catalytic process is highly exergonic and occurs in three consecutive steps with nitrosobenzene and N-phenylhydroxylamine as reaction intermediates. Our computational findings explain how hydrogen is transferred from these Mo-HHOOCH dihydrogen adducts to nitrobenzene with the concomitant formation of nitrosobenzene and the formate substituted cluster. Then, a β-hydride elimination reaction accompanied by CO2 release regenerates the cluster hydride. Two additional steps are needed for hydrogen transfer from the dihydrogen cluster to nitrosobenzene and N-phenylhydroxylamine to finally produce aniline. Our results show that the three metal centres in the Mo3S4 unit act independently, so the cluster can exist in up to ten different forms that are capable of opening a wide range of reaction paths. This behaviour reveals the outstanding catalytic possibilities of this kind of cluster complexes, which work as highly efficient catalytic machines.

Abstract
Herein, we report a straightforward protocol for the preparation of N,N-dimethylated amines from readily available nitro starting materials using formic acid as a renewable C1 source and silanes as reducing agents. This tandem process is efficiently accomplished in the presence of a cubane-type Mo3 PtS4 catalyst. For the preparation of the novel [Mo3 Pt(PPh3 )S4 Cl3 (dmen)3 ]+ (3+ ) (dmen: N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine) compound we have followed a [3+1] building block strategy starting from the trinuclear [Mo3 S4 Cl3 (dmen)3 ]+ (1+ ) and Pt(PPh3 )4 (2) complexes. The heterobimetallic 3+ cation preserves the main structural features of its 1+ cluster precursor. Interestingly, this catalytic protocol operates at room temperature with high chemoselectivity when the 3+ catalyst co-exists with its trinuclear 1+ precursor. N-heterocyclic arenes, double bonds, ketones, cyanides and ester functional groups are well retained after N-methylation of the corresponding functionalized nitroarenes. In addition, benzylic-type as well as aliphatic nitro compounds can also be methylated following this protocol.

Abstract
Treatment of the triangular [Mo3S4Cl3(dbbpy)3]Cl cluster ([1]Cl) with CuCl produces a novel tetrametallic cuboidal cluster [Mo3(CuCl)S4Cl3(dbbpy)3][CuCl2] ([2][CuCl2]), whose crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction (dbbpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine). This species, which contains two distinct types of Cu(I), is the first example of a diimine-functionalized heterometallic M3M'S4 cluster. Kinetics studies on both the formation of the cubane from the parent trinuclear cluster and its dissociation after treatment with halides, supported by NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, and density functional theory calculations, are provided. On the one hand, the results indicate that addition of Cu(I) to [1]+ is so fast that its kinetics can be monitored only by cryo-stopped flow at -85 °C. On the other hand, the release of the CuCl unit in [2]+ is also a fast process, which is unexpectedly assisted by the CuCl2- counteranion in a process triggered by halide (X-) anions. The whole set of results provide a detailed picture of the assembly-disassembly processes in this kind of cluster. Interconversion between trinuclear M3S4 clusters and their heterometallic M3M'S4 derivatives can be a fast process occurring readily under the conditions employed during reactivity and catalytic studies, so their occurrence is a possibility that must be taken into account in future studies.

Abstract
A diastereoselective synthesis of proline containing aminophosphino cubane-type Mo3S4 clusters, (P)-[Mo3S4Cl3((1S,2R)-PPro)3]Cl (Cl) and (P)-[Mo3S4Cl3((1S,2S)-PPro)3]Cl (Cl), has been achieved in high yields by reacting the corresponding enantiomerically pure PPro ((R)- and (S)-2-[(diphenylphosphino)methyl]pyrrolidine) ligands with the Mo3S4Cl4(PPh3)3(H2O)2 complex. Circular dichroism, nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray techniques confirm that the Cl and Cl cluster cations are diastereoisomers which combine three sources of stereogenicity provided by the cluster framework, one carbon atom of the aminophosphine ligand and the nitrogen stereogenic center. The higher stability of the (+) cation is due to stabilizing vicinal ClHN interactions as well as due to the cis-fused conformation of the bicyclic system formed upon coordination of the aminophosphine ligand.
