Mesoporous Titania-Iron(III) Oxide with Nanoscale Porosity and High Catalytic Activity for the Synthesis of β-Amino Alcohols and Benzimidazole Derivatives

Study on Pyridine-Boryl Radical-Promoted, Ketyl Radical-Mediated Carbon-Carbon Bond-Forming Reactions

Ketyl radicals are synthetically versatile reactive species, but their applications have been hampered by harsh generation conditions employing highly reducing metals. Recently, the pyridine-boryl radical received wide attention as a promising organic reductant because of its mildness as well as convenience in handling. While probing the utility of the pyridine-boryl radical, our group observed facile pinacol coupling reactivity that had not been known at that time. This serendipitous finding was successfully rendered into a practical synthesis of tetraaryl-1,2-diols in up to 99% yield within 1 h. Subsequently, upon examinations of various reaction manifolds, a diastereoselective ketyl-olefin cyclization was accomplished to produce cycloalkanols such as trans-2-alkyl-1-indanols. Compared to the previous methods, the stereocontrolling ability was considerably enhanced by taking advantage of the structurally modifiable boryl group that would be present near the bond-forming site. In this full account, our synthetic efforts with the O-boryl ketyl radicals are disclosed in detail, covering the discovery, optimization, scope expansion, and mechanistic analysis, including density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Recent achievements in the synthesis of benzimidazole derivatives

Benzimidazoles are a class of heterocyclic compounds in which a benzene ring is fused to the 4 and 5 positions of an imidazole ring. Benzimidazole refers to the parent compound, while benzimidazoles are a class of heterocyclic compounds having similar ring structures, but different substituents. Benzimidazole derivatives possess a wide range of bioactivities including antimicrobial, anthelmintic, antiviral, anticancer, and antihypertensive activities. Many compounds possessing a benzimidazole skeleton have been employed as drugs in the market. The application of benzimidazoles in other fields has also been documented. The synthesis of benzimidazole derivatives has attracted much attention from chemists and numerous articles on the synthesis of this class of heterocyclic compound have been reported over the years. The condensation between 1,2-benzenediamine and aldehydes has received intensive interest, while many novel methods have been developed. In this article, we will give a comprehensive review of studies on the synthesis of benzimidazole, which date back to 2013. We have also tried to describe reaction mechanisms as much as we can. The work might be useful for chemists who work in the synthesis of heterocycles or drug chemistry.

Highly Efficient and Ambient-Temperature Synthesis of Benzimidazoles via Co(III)/Co(II)-Mediated Redox Catalysis

An efficient method for ambient-temperature synthesis of a variety of 2-substituted and 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles from aldehyde and phenylenediamine substrates has been developed by utilizing Co(III)/Co(II)-mediated redox catalysis. The combination of only 1 mol% of Co(acac)2 and stoichiometric amount of hydrogen peroxide provides a fast, green, and mild access to a diversity of benzimidazoles under solvent-free conditions.

Visible-light-driven sustainable conversion of carbon dioxide to methanol using a metal-free covalent organic framework as a recyclable photocatalyst

A 2D covalent organic framework (COF) was synthesized by copolymerization between 4,4′-biphenyldicarbaldehyde and 1,3,5-tris-(4-aminophenyl) triazine (TAPT). This COF exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance for the CO2 reduction to methanol.

Highly regioselective ring-opening of epoxides with amines: a metal- and solvent-free protocol for the synthesis of β-amino alcohols

We herein report a metal- and solvent-free acetic acid-mediated ring-opening reaction of epoxides with amines. This process provides β-amino alcohols in high yields with excellent regioselectivity. Importantly, this epoxide ring-opening protocol can be used for the introduction of amines in natural products during late-stage transformations.

A nanoscopic icosahedral {Mo72Fe30} cluster catalyzes the aerobic synthesis of benzimidazoles

In this study, the catalytic efficiency of amorphous {Mo₇₂Fe₃₀} nanocapsules as a safe Keplerate polyoxometalate in organic synthesis was exploited. The easy-made solid catalyst exhibited high efficiency using a very low dosage (0.02–0.05 mol%) in the catalyzed condensation of various aromatic 1,2-diamines and aldehydes for the aerobic synthesis of benzimidazoles with very small E-factor values (0.11–0.33). The superior catalytic activity of amorphous nanoclusters compared to that of its crystalline counterpart was demonstrated. The high activity and recyclability of heterogeneous catalysts in a green reaction media under oxygen atmosphere, make this environmentally benign organic process appropriate for our applied goals.
