Silica nanoparticles and kaolin clay decorated with VO2+ in aerobic oxidative destruction of BTEX contaminants

The importance of controlled hydrocarbon oxidation has sparked interest in methods that catalyze this process. In this vein, controlled oxidative degradation of BTEX compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes) which are hazardous air and industrial waste water contaminants is very considerable. Accordingly, the reactive VO2+ species was anchored onto silica nanoparticles (VO-SNP) to catalyze the conversion of BTEX into useful compounds. The synthesized heterogeneous VO-SNP catalyst was characterized using different techniques such as FTIR, FETEM, FESEM, XRD, EDX, ICP and XPS. Interestingly, the catalyst performed the activation of the relatively inert C-H bonds of BTEX to produce oxygenated compounds under quite mild and eco-friendly conditions at room temperature with no extra additives. Furthermore, we introduced VO2+ species onto mineral kaolin sheets (VO-kaolin) as a vanadyl decorated natural solid support and the results showed less efficiency compared to VO-SNP.

Mesoporous sol-gel silica supported vanadium oxide as effective catalysts in oxidative dehydrogenation of propane to propylene

Vanadium oxide incorporated mesoporous silica (V-m-SiO₂) were designed and synthesized using a surfactant-modified sol-gel method. Detailed characterization shows that monomeric [VO₄] sites containing one terminal V[double bond, length as m-dash]O bond and three V-O-support bonds are dominated until atomic ratio of vanadium to silicon approaches to 5%. It is also confirmed that such V-m-SiO₂ catalyst contains high proportion of vanadium oxide species interacting strongly with silica. Compared to vanadium oxide supported mesoporous silica (V/m-SiO₂) prepared using a traditional impregnation method, present V-m-SiO₂ catalyst exhibits more superior ability to catalyze oxidative dehydrogenation of propane to propylene. By correlation with structural data, superior catalytic performance of present V-m-SiO₂ catalyst can be reasonably attributed, in part, to its favorable geometric and electronic properties rendered by the unique preparation method.

Current status and perspectives in oxidative, non-oxidative and CO2-mediated dehydrogenation of propane and isobutane over metal oxide catalysts

Conversion of propane or isobutane from natural/shale gas into propene or isobutene, which are indispensable for the synthesis of commodity chemicals, is an important environmentally friendly alternative to oil-based cracking processes.

Increasing the Efficiency of Optimized V-SBA-15 Catalysts in the Selective Oxidation of Methane to Formaldehyde by Artificial Neural Network Modelling

The present study investigates the possibility of improving the selective oxidation of methane to formaldehyde over V-SBA-15 catalysts in two different ways. In a classical approach of catalyst optimization, the in situ synthesis of V-SBA-15 catalysts was optimized with regard to the applied pH value. Among the set of catalysts synthesized, a higher amount of incorporated vanadium, a higher content of polymeric VOx species as well as a less ordered structure of the support material were observed by increasing the pH values from 2.0 to 3.0. An optimum in performance during the selective oxidation of methane to formaldehyde with respect to activity and selectivity was found over V-SBA-15 prepared at a pH value of 2.5. With this knowledge, we have now evaluated the possibilities of reaction control using this catalyst. Specifically, artificial neural network modelling was applied after the collection of 232 training samples for obtaining insight into the influence of different reaction parameters (temperature; gas hourly space velocity (GHSV); and concentration of O2, N2 and H2O) onto methane conversion and selectivity towards formaldehyde. This optimization of reaction conditions resulted in an outstanding high space-time yield of 13.6 kgCH2O∙kgcat∙h−1.

High Surface Area VOx/TiO2/SBA-15 Model Catalysts for Ammonia SCR Prepared by Atomic Layer Deposition

The mode of operation of titania-supported vanadia (VOx) catalysts for NOx abatement using ammonia selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) is still vigorously debated. We introduce a new high surface area VOx/TiO2/SBA-15 model catalyst system based on mesoporous silica SBA-15 making use of atomic layer deposition (ALD) for controlled synthesis of titania and vanadia multilayers. The bulk and surface structure is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis and Raman spectroscopy, as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), revealing the presence of dispersed surface VOx species on amorphous TiO2 domains on SBA-15, forming hybrid Si–O–V and Ti–O–V linkages. Temperature-dependent analysis of the ammonia SCR catalytic activity reveals NOx conversion levels of up to ~60%. In situ and operando diffuse reflection IR Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy shows N–Hstretching modes, representing adsorbed ammonia and -NH2 and -NH intermediate structures on Bronsted and Lewis acid sites. Partial Lewis acid sites with adjacent redox sites are proposed as the active sites and desorption of product molecules as the rate-determining step at low temperature. The high NOx conversion is attributed to the presence of highly dispersed VOx species and the moderate acidity of VOx supported on TiO2/SBA-15.

Understanding the Synthesis of Supported Vanadium Oxide Catalysts Using Chemical Grafting

The complexity of variables during incipient wetness impregnation synthesis of supported metal oxides precludes an in-depth understanding of the chemical reactions governing the formation of the dispersed oxide sites. This contribution describes the use of vapor phase deposition chemistry (also known as grafting) as a tool to systematically investigate the influence of isopropanol solvent on VO(Oⁱ Pr)₃ anchoring during synthesis of vanadium oxide on silica. The availability of anchoring sites on silica was found to depend not only on the pretreatment of the silica but also on the solvent present. H-bond donors can reduce the reactivity of isolated silanols whereas disruption of silanol nests by H-bond acceptors can turn unreactive H-bonded silanols into reactive anchoring sites. The model suggested here can inform improved syntheses with increased dispersion of metal oxides on silica.

The Comparison between Single Atom Catalysis and Surface Organometallic Catalysis

Single atom catalysis (SAC) is a recent discipline of heterogeneous catalysis for which a single atom on a surface is able to carry out various catalytic reactions. A kind of revolution in heterogeneous catalysis by metals for which it was assumed that specific sites or defects of a nanoparticle were necessary to activate substrates in catalytic reactions. In another extreme of the spectrum, surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC), and, by extension, surface organometallic catalysis (SOMCat), have demonstrated that single atoms on a surface, but this time with specific ligands, could lead to a more predictive approach in heterogeneous catalysis. The predictive character of SOMCat was just the result of intuitive mechanisms derived from the elementary steps of molecular chemistry. This review article will compare the aspects of single atom catalysis and surface organometallic catalysis by considering several specific catalytic reactions, some of which exist for both fields, whereas others might see mutual overlap in the future. After a definition of both domains, a detailed approach of the methods, mostly modeling and spectroscopy, will be followed by a detailed analysis of catalytic reactions: hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, oxidative dehydrogenation, alkane and cycloalkane metathesis, methane activation, metathetic oxidation, CO₂ activation to cyclic carbonates, imine metathesis, and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reactions. A prospective resulting from present knowledge is showing the emergence of a new discipline from the overlap between the two areas.

Morphology control of anatase TiO2 for well-defined surface chemistry

Surface hydroxyls of titanium dioxide (anatase) are studied by infrared spectroscopy, density functional theory and nuclear magnetic resonance. They are found to be dependent on morphology and fluoride content.

Reactive surface organometallic complexes observed using dynamic nuclear polarization surface enhanced NMR spectroscopy

Dynamic Nuclear Polarization Surface Enhanced NMR Spectroscopy (DNP SENS) is an emerging technique that allows access to high-sensitivity NMR spectra from surfaces. However, DNP SENS usually requires the use of radicals as an exogenous source of polarization, which has so far limited applications for organometallic surface species to those that do not react with the radicals. Here we show that reactive surface species can be studied if they are immobilized inside porous materials with suitably small windows, and if bulky nitroxide bi-radicals (here TEKPol) are used as the polarization source and which cannot enter the pores. The method is demonstrated by obtaining significant DNP enhancements from highly reactive complelxes [([triple bond, length as m-dash]Si-O-)W(Me)5] supported on MCM-41, and effects of pore size (6.0, 3.0 and 2.5 nm) on the performance are discussed.
