Abstract
Ammonium, imidazole, or pyridinium functionalized β-cyclodextrins (β-CDs) were used as efficient one-component bifunctional catalysts for the coupling reaction of carbon dioxide (CO2) and epoxide without the addition of solvent and metal. The influence of different catalysts and reaction parameters on the catalytic performance were examined in detail. Under optimal conditions, Im-CD1-I catalysts functionalized with imidazole groups were able to convert various epoxides into target products with high selectivity and good conversion rates. The one-component bifunctional catalysts can also be recovered easily by filtration and reused at least for five times with only slight decrease in catalytic performance. Finally, a possible process for hydroxyl group-assisted ring-opening of epoxide and functionalized group- induced activation of CO2 was presented.

Abstract
The potential for application of bio-derived molecules in our everyday lives is attracting vast interest as attention moves towards development of a truly circular and sustainable economy. Whilst a large number of molecules are naturally available and contain a variety of functional groups, few of these compounds are able to be immediately transferred to applications where they can directly replace established oil-derived species. This issue presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the synthetic chemistry community. This study demonstrates how erucic acid, a molecule containing an olefin and a carboxylic acid, which is readily available from commonly cultivated rapeseed oils, can be used as a platform to be chemoselectively converted into a range of value-added compounds using established and high yielding synthetic procedures. In particular, the work showcases approaches towards the chemoselective (and in cases regioselective) oxidation with m-CPBA and incorporation of cyclic carbonate and cyclic dithiocarbonate functionalities which have potential to be employed in a range of applications. Expedient routes to unusual derivatives containing both cyclic carbonate and cyclic dithiocarbonates are also presented taking advantage of the distinct reactivities of the two different epoxides in the intermediate compounds. This work also provides a rare example of the synthesis of internal cyclic dithiocarbonates. These new products have potential to be applied as monomers in the growing field of bio-based non-isocyanate polyurethane synthesis.

Abstract
In this work, we report a more simple and efficient way to synthesize a composite ionic liquid (IL) ([BMIM][Zn2Br5]) by directly coupling the IL with molecular sieves. Two kinds of immobilized catalysts were successfully synthesized: SBA-15-[BMIM][Zn2Br5] and SBA-15-CPTES-[BMIM][Zn2Br5]. The catalysts were used to catalyze the cycloaddition reaction of continuous transformation of CO2 and propylene oxide, and the catalytic performance of catalysts was further studied. Compared with the traditional IL catalysts, the catalysts not only have excellent catalytic performance, but also have a significantly longer service life. This is because the catalysts are formed by a high energy chemical bond of silane between IL catalysts and molecular sieves, which can effectively solve the problem of the loss of IL active components in the catalytic process.

Abstract
The conversion of CO2 to high value-added chemicals in water using environment-friendly and cost-effective catalysts is a very significant topic. In this work, a green method for the conversion of CO2 catalyzed by alcohol amines has been developed. Alcohol amines showed considerable activating ability to CO2 in the cyclization with 2-aminobenzonitrile to quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-dione in water. Notably, when diethanolamine (DEA) was used as the catalyst, 94% yield of quinazoline-2,4-(1H,3H)-dione could be achieved. A plausible mechanism has been proposed based on the 1H NMR, FT-IR analysis and DFT calculation. The excellent catalytic performance is attributed to the combined effect of both the secondary amine and hydroxyl groups on alcohol amines with the assistance of water in the formation of carbamate. Water plays a bi-functional role of solvent and co-catalyst in this catalytic process. Catalysts can be easily recovered and reused five times without significant loss of activity.

Abstract
The conversion of carbon dioxide into valuable chemicals such as cyclic carbonates is an appealing topic for the scientific community due to the possibility of valorizing waste into an inexpensive, available, nontoxic, and renewable carbon feedstock. In this regard, last-generation heterogeneous catalysts are of great interest owing to their high catalytic activity, robustness, and easy recovery and recycling. In the present review, recent advances on CO2 cycloaddition to epoxide mediated by hybrid catalysts through organometallic or organo-catalytic species supported onto silica-, nanocarbon-, and metal–organic framework (MOF)-based heterogeneous materials, are highlighted and discussed.

Abstract
In this study, pharmaceutically relevant quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-diones were synthesized eco-efficiently by cycloaddition of CO2 and 2-aminobenzonitrile in water, catalyzed by melamine as a thermoregulated catalyst. Quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-dione was produced selectively with 92% yield at 120 °C, 4.2 MPa, and automatically separated from the hot catalytic aqueous solution, which was reused directly for several runs until its activity decreased in an obvious manner. Then, the catalyst melamine was recrystallized from the spent aqueous solution via simple cooling and reused for another several catalytic runs. The efficient valorization of CO2 and the straightforward stepwise recovery of the products and catalyst were important to save energy and minimize process waste for the practical industrial production.

Immobilizing Polyether Imidazole Ionic Liquids on ZSM-5 Zeolite for the Catalytic Synthesis of Propylene Carbonate from Carbon Dioxide. Molecules 2018; 23:molecules23102710. [PMID: 30347858 PMCID: PMC6222835 DOI: 10.3390/molecules23102710] [Citation(s) in RCA: 11] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.6] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/21/2018] [Revised: 10/15/2018] [Accepted: 10/20/2018] [Indexed: 11/19/2022] Open
Abstract
Traditional ionic liquids (ILs) catalysts suffer from the difficulty of product purification and can only be used in homogeneous catalytic systems. In this work, by reacting ILs with co-catalyst (ZnBr2), we successfully converted three polyether imidazole ionic liquids (PIILs), i.e., HO-[Poly-epichlorohydrin-methimidazole]Cl (HO-[PECH-MIM]Cl), HOOC-[Poly-epichlorohydrin-methimidazole]Cl (HOOC-[PECH-MIM]Cl), and H2N-[Poly-epichlorohydrin-methimidazole]Cl (H2N-[PECH-MIM]Cl), to three composite PIIL materials, which were further immobilized on ZSM-5 zeolite by chemical bonding to result in three immobilized catalysts, namely ZSM-5-HO-[PECH-MIM]Cl/[ZnBr2], ZSM-5-HOOC-[PECH-MIM]Cl/[ZnBr2], and ZSM-5-H2N-[PECH-MIM]Cl/[ZnBr2]. Their structures, thermal stabilities, and morphologies were fully characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The amount of composite PIIL immobilized on ZSM-5 was determined by elemental analysis. Catalytic performance of the immobilized catalysts was evaluated through the catalytic synthesis of propylene carbonate (PC) from CO2 and propylene oxide (PO). Influences of reaction temperature, time, and pressure on catalytic performance were investigated through the orthogonal test, and the effect of catalyst circulation was also studied. Under an optimal reaction condition (130 °C, 2.5 MPa, 0.75 h), the composite catalyst, ZSM-5-HOOC- [PECH-MIM]Cl/[ZnBr2], exhibited the best catalytic activity with a conversion rate of 98.3% and selectivity of 97.4%. Significantly, the immobilized catalyst could still maintain high heterogeneous catalytic activity even after being reused for eight cycles.

Abstract
The present study deals with the synthesis of SrTiO3 (STO) nanocatalysts by conventional oxalate and microwave-assisted hydrothermal methods. Thorough characterization of the nanocatalysts synthesized has been done by using various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, N2 physisorption, transmission electron microscopy, total acidity by pyridine adsorption method, and acidic strength by n-butylamine potentiometric titration, respectively. Structural parameters were estimated by Rietveld refinement analysis from XRD data which confirms cubic structure of SrTiO3. Traces of impurities such as TiO2 and SrCO3 were found in conventional catalysts, whereas these are absent in microwave catalyst. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of the microwave catalyst was enhanced 14-folds compared to conventional catalyst. Increase in Lewis acid sites and their strength were also observed in STO microwave catalyst. Catalytic performance of the catalysts was evaluated for various reactions, such as Knoevenagel condensation of benzaldehyde, catalytic transfer hydrogenation of nitrobenzene, and amination of benzaldehyde. Catalytic results reveal that microwave-synthesized catalyst showed 100% conversion and selectivity (>99% yield) for the chosen reactions than the conventional catalyst. Excellent catalytic activity of the STO microwave catalyst was due to high BET surface area, pore volume, and acidity of the catalyst, as compared to conventional catalyst. The present study marks the first-time application of perovskite-based SrTiO3 as a potential multitasking cost-effective catalyst for the above reactions and synthesized using environment friendly microwave synthesis method.

Abstract
CO2 adsorption and concomitant catalytic conversion into useful chemicals are promising approaches to alleviate the energy crisis and effects of global warming. This is highly desirable for developing new types of heterogeneous catalytic materials containing CO2 -philic groups and catalytic active sites for CO2 chemical transformation. Here, we present an imidazolium- and triazine-based porous organic polymer with counter chloride anion (IT-POP-1). The porosity and CO2 affinity of IT-POP-1 may be modulated at the molecular level through a facile anion-exchange strategy. Compared with the post-modified polymers with iodide and hexafluorophosphate anions, IT-POP-1 possesses the highest surface area and the best CO2 uptake capacity with excellent adsorption selectivity over N2 . The roles of the task-specific components such as triazine, imidazolium, hydroxyl, and counter anions in CO2 absorption and catalytic performance were illustrated. IT-POP-1 exhibits the highest catalytic activity and excellent recyclability in solvent- and additive-free cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with epoxides.

Abstract
A series of highly efficient, bifunctional ionic liquids containing a quaternary alkyl ammonium cation and an amine anion were prepared from choline and amino acids, respectively. Nine ILs were synthesized, characterized, and applied as organocatalysts for the chemical fixation of carbon dioxide to form cyclic carbonates and quinazoline-2,4(1 H,3 H)-diones. A binary mixture of an IL and a co-catalysts generates deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and accelerates the rate of the cycloaddition reaction at atmospheric pressure and low temperature (70 °C). The presence of the hydroxyl functional group of choline and the free amine group of the amino acids in the ILs has a synergistic effect on the activation of the epoxide and carbon dioxide towards the cycloaddition reactions. These ILs are biodegradable and are synthesized from easily available biorenewable sources. Additionally, this catalytic method demonstrates ultimate environmental benignity because of the mild metal- and solvent-free conditions as well as the recyclability of the catalyst and co-catalyst.

Abstract
In this report, the activity of N-heterocyclic olefins (NHOs) as a newly emerging class of organocatalyst is investigated for the chemical fixation of carbon dioxide through reactions with aziridines to form oxazolidinones and the N-formylation of amines with polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) or 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (9-BBN) as the reducing agent under mild conditions. The exocyclic carbon atoms of NHOs are highly nucleophilic owing to the electron-donating ability of the two nitrogen atoms. This high nucleophilicity of the NHOs activates CO2 molecules to form zwitterionic NHO-carboxylate (NHO-CO2 ) adducts, which are active in formylation reactions as well as the carboxylation of aziridines to oxazolidinones.

Abstract
An environmentally-benign carbocatalyst based on amine-functionalized graphene oxide (AP-GO) was synthesized and characterized. This catalyst shows superior activity for the chemical fixation of CO2 into cyclic carbonates at the atmospheric pressure. The developed carbocatalyst exhibits superior activity owing to its large surface area with abundant hydrogen bonding donor (HBD) capability and the presence of well-defined amine functional groups. The presence of various HBD and amine functional groups on the graphene oxide (GO) surface yields a synergistic effect for the activation of starting materials. Additionally, this catalyst shows high catalytic activity to synthesize carbonates at 70 °C and at 1 MPa CO2 pressure. The developed AP-GO could be easily recovered and used repetitively in up to seven recycle runs with unchanged catalyst activity.
