Abstract
The structural variability and chemical stability of metal phosphonates under harsh conditions are attractive attributes that have drawn considerable attention in recent years. As the need for more sustainable solutions rises, the demand for novel and tolerant materials also increases. Thus, herein we report, for the first time, the synthesis of a novel diphosphonic organic linker named pyrazole diphenyl phosphonate (PZDP), envisioning the fabrication of durable metal phosphonates. In view of this, a series of M-PZDP materials (M=Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn and Co) were synthesized employing either solvothermal or hydrothermal methods. The crystal structures of the Ca, Sr, Zn, and Co derivatives were determined revealing a 2D-pillared architecture. Zn-PZDP is an anionic framework with dimethylammonium cations. The Co-PZDP compound was tested as a heterogeneous catalyst in olefin epoxidation employing molecular oxygen.

Abstract
CONTEXT The controlled slow evaporation process conducted at room temperature has produced a novel hybrid material denoted as (2-hydroxyethyl) trimethylammonium dihydrogen phosphate [2-HDETDHP] (C5H14NO+, H2PO4-), synthesized through the solution growth method. X-ray crystallography analysis reveals a triclinic structure with a filling rate of P and a Z value of 2. This hybrid material displays noteworthy absorption characteristics in the middle and far ultraviolet regions. UV-visible spectroscopy further establishes its transparency in the visible and near-visible ultraviolet domains. FT-IR spectroscopy examines various vibration modes, elucidating their relationships with the functional groups within the structure. Two- and three-dimensional fingerprint maps, coupled with three-dimensional crystal structures through Hirshfeld Surface Analysis, unveil the dominance of O•••H and H•••H interactions in the structure, comprising 49.40% and 50.40%, respectively. Fingerprint plots derived from the Hirshfeld surface assess the percentages of hydrogen bonding interactions, with 80.6% attributed to a fragment patch. The experiment of antimicrobial efficacy of a synthesized product, conducted in triplicate, demonstrated the synthesized product's potential antimicrobial activity. METHODS Hirshfeld surfaces are employed to investigate intermolecular hydrogen bonding, specifically within single phosphate groups. The molecular structure of 2-HDETDHP was refined using single-crystal X-ray analysis, while its optical characteristics were examined through UV-visible spectroscopy. FT-IR spectroscopy is employed for the assignment of molecular vibrations of functional groups in the affined structure. Quantum calculations were executed with the GAUSSIAN 09 software package at B3LYP/6-311G level of theory, to optimize the molecular geometries. The antimicrobial efficacy of a synthesized product was evaluated using the disc diffusion method against antibiotic-resistant Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Aspergillus niger, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. Microorganisms were cultured on nutrient agar, and inhibition zones were measured after incubation, with streptomycin and amphotericin as positive controls.

Abstract
The morphology control of metal phosphonates is always a difficulty because there are many challenges derived from the complexity of crystallization and the multivariable synthesis system. Responding to challenges, we propose a synthesis strategy guided by a decision tree for morphology control of metal phosphonates, through which directional design of the morphology-controlled synthesis can be realized. Specifically, any one synthetic condition involving the synthesis of metal phosphonates can be regarded as a decision problem to construct a binary decision tree. By means of the classification principle of the binary decision tree, the samples synthesized under the boundary value of each synthesis condition are classified based on crystal phase and morphology. The key synthetic conditions determining crystal phase and morphology can be precisely screened out to serve as decision nodes for the binary decision tree and are also rapidly optimized by the recursion level by level, whereas others cannot. Here, the β-polymorph of copper phenylphosphonate (β-CuPP) is selected as an example to elaborate the decision-tree-guided synthesis strategy for morphology control of metal phosphonates. From the constructed binary decision tree, it is clear that the right amount of methanol in the solvent is vital to obtain β-phase of CuPP, whereas the reactant concentration, pH value, and reaction time are important for morphology and phase transformation. Under the optimal synthetic conditions screened out by the binary decision tree, β-CuPP can thus be controlled to be hierarchically flower-like microsphere morphology through either the direct synthesis route or the solid-to-solid phase transformation route. This research work confirms that the decision-tree-guided synthesis is highly efficacious for the morphology control of metal phosphonates. Furthermore, the morphology-controlled synthesis guided by a decision tree may provide some valuable inspiration for morphology control of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and even coordinate compounds.

Abstract
Heterogenized metalloporphyrin catalysts for oxidation reactions are extensively explored to improve chemical production. In this work, manganese meso-tetraarylporphyrins were immobilized on hydrated mesoporous titanium dioxide (SBET = 705 m2 g−1) through carboxylate or phosphonate anchoring groups separated from the macrocycle by the 2-arylimidazole linker fused across one of the pyrrolic rings of the macrocycle. The element composition of two mesoporous hybrid materials thus obtained were investigated and the integrity of the immobilized complexes was shown by different physicochemical methods. Finally, the catalytic efficiency of the more stable material Mn(TMPIP)/TiO2 with the phosphonate anchor was evaluated in the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides by molecular oxygen in the presence of isobutyraldehyde (IBA). The heterogenized complex has shown excellent catalytic activity exhibiting a turnover (TON) of ~1100 in a single catalytic run of the sulfoxidation of thioanisole. The catalyst was successfully reused in seven consecutive catalytic cycles.

Abstract
The synthesis of phosphonate esters is a topic of interest for various fields, including the preparation of phosphonic acids to be employed as organic linkers for the construction of metal phosphonate materials. We report an alternative method that requires no solvent and involves a different order of addition of reactants to perform the transition-metal-catalyzed C-P cross-coupling reaction, often referred to as the Tavs reaction, employing NiCl2 as a pre-catalyst in the phosphonylation of aryl bromide substrates using triisopropyl phosphite. This new method was employed in the synthesis of three novel aryl diphosphonate esters which were subsequently transformed to phosphonic acids through silylation and hydrolysis.

Abstract
The successful discovery of novel multifunctional metal phosphonate framework materials that incorporate newer organoamines and their utilization as a potential electroactive material for energy storage applications (supercapacitors) and as efficient heterogeneous catalysts are the most enduring challenges at present. From this perspective, herein, four new inorganic-organic hybrid zinc organodiphosphonate materials, namely, [C5H14N2]2[Zn6(hedp)4] (I), [C5H14N2]0.5[Zn3(Hhedp) (hedp)]·2H2O (II), [C6H16N2][Zn3(hedp)2] (III), and [C10H24N4][Zn6(Hhedp)2(hedp)2] (IV) (H4hedp = 1-hydroxyethane 1,1-diphosphonic acid), have been synthesized through the introduction of different organoamines and then structurally analyzed using various techniques. The compounds (I-IV) possess a three-dimensional network through alternate connectivity of zinc ions and diphosphonate ligands, as confirmed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The investigations of electrochemical charge storage behaviors of the present compounds indicate that compound III exhibits a high specific capacitance of 190 F g-1 (76 C g-1) at 1 A g-1, while compound II shows an excellent cycling stability of 90.11% even after 5000 cycles at 5 A g-1 in the 6 M KOH solution. Further, the present materials have also been utilized as active heterogeneous Lewis acid catalysts in the ketalization reaction. The screening of various substrate scopes during the catalytic process confirms the size-selective heterogeneous catalytic nature of the framework compounds. To our utmost knowledge, such a size-selective heterogeneous Lewis acid catalytic behavior has been observed for the first time in the amine templated inorganic-organic hybrid framework family. Moreover, the excellent size-selective catalytic efficiencies with the d10 metal system and recyclability performances make the compounds (I-IV) more efficient and promising Lewis acid heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract
Four inorganic-organic hybrid silver phosphonate compounds, [Ag(C10H8N2)(H4hedp)] (1), [Ag2(C10H8N2)(H3hedp)]·2H2O (2), [C4H12N2][Ag4(H2hedp)2] (3) and [C4H12N2][Ag10(H2hedp)4(H2O)2]·2H2O (4) (H5hedp = 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid), have been prepared by virtue of the variable amine-directed hydrothermal strategy. The subsequent roles of coordinated aromatic amine (4,4'-bipyridine) and coordination-free templated aliphatic amine (piperazine) are studied. The connectivity of the silver ions, diphosphonate units (hedp) and bipyridine moiety can give rise to the one-dimensional structure of 1 and two-dimensional layer structure of 2. In contrast, the silver ions and diphosphonate units are connected to form the tetrameric and pentameric silver cluster units in compound 3 and 4, respectively. Such clusters are rare examples of fundamental building units in the piperazine templated two-dimensional silver based layer structures. The room temperature dielectric studies show the extremely high dielectric permittivity of the amine templated compounds (3 and 4) compared to amine coordinated structures (1 and 2). The synthesized compounds also participate in various heterogenous catalytic reactions acting as active Lewis acid catalysts that are observed for the first time in the amine-templated metal organophosphonates. The observed band gaps and dielectric values suggest that compounds 3 and 4 are more promising candidates for electronic applications, while compounds 1 and 2 are comparatively better Lewis acid catalysts.

Abstract
Three novel coordination compounds based on α,α-disubstituted analogues of zoledronic acid with a cyclopropane (cpp) or cyclobutane (cbt) ring on the Cα carbon, isomorphous [Co(H2cppZol)(H2O)]·H2O (1a), [Ni(H2cppZol)(H2O)]·H2O (1b) and [Co(H2cbtZol)(H2O)]·H2O (2a), were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions at low pH. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that all the compounds had a 1D double zig-zag chain architecture with an 8 + 8 ring motif formed by alternately arranged symmetrical (-O-P-O-)2 bridges linking equivalent octahedral metal centres. Both the ligand coordination mode and chain architecture displayed by 1a, 1b and 2a are unique among 1D [M(H2L)(H2O) x ]·yH2O coordination polymers based on nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates reported so far. All the compounds exhibit similar decomposition pathways upon heating with thermal stabilities decreasing in the order 1b > 1a > 2a. The IR spectra revealed that lattice water release above 227, 178 and 97 °C, respectively, does not change the chain architecture leaving them intact up to ca. 320, 280 and 240 °C. Magnetic behaviour investigations indicated that 1a, 2a and 1b exhibit weak alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic exchange interactions propagated between the magnetic centres through double (-O-P-O-)2 bridges. The boundary between antiferro- and ferromagnetic couplings for the Co-O⋯O-Co angle in 1a and 2a was estimated to be ca. 80°. This value is also applicable for recently reported [M3(HL)2(H2O)6]·6H2O (M = Co, Ni) complexes based on α,α-disubstituted analogues of zoledronic acid and can be used to the explain magnetic behaviour of 1b.

Abstract
We report a class of pKa-directed, precise incorporation of phosphonate ligands into a zirconium-based metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF), MOF-808, via ligand exchange. By replacing of formate ligands with methylphosphonic acid (MPA), ethanephosphonic acid (EPA), and vinylphosphonic acid (VPA), whose pKa values are slightly higher than that of the benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) linker in MOF-808, daughter MOFs can be synthesized without controlling the stoichiometric amounts of added MPA. The methylphosphonate MOFs (808-MPAs) demonstrate high porosities, with only small changes in the pore diameter and specific surface area when compared with the parent MOF-808. PXRD patterns and structure refinements indicate the expansion of the lattice for all MOFs after decorating with methylphosphonate ligands. The XPS spectra reveal a charge redistribution of the Zr6 node after ligand exchange. FTIR and 31P MAS NMR spectra, combined with DFT calculation, suggest that the methylphosphonate ligand is connected to the Zr6 node as CH3P(O)(OZr)(OH) species with an accessible acidic P-OH group. Besides, 808-MPAs demonstrate excellent chemical stability in concentrated HCl, concentrated HNO3, hot water, and 0.2 mol/L trifluoroacetic acid solutions. Impressively, 808-MPAs show ultrafast adsorption performance for uranyl ions using the ion-exchange property of P-OH sites in their cavity environment, with an equilibrium time of 10 min, much quicker than the previous adsorbents. The present study demonstrates a series of important proof-of-concept examples of the pKa-directed Zr-MOFs with tunable phosphonate-terminated ligands, which can extend to other phosphonate-functionalized Zr-based framework platforms in the near future.

Abstract
Heterogeneous catalytic conversion of lignocellulosic components into valuable chemicals and biofuels is one of the promising ways for biomass valorization, which well meets green chemistry metrics, and can alleviate environmental and economic issues caused by the rapid depletion of fossil fuels. Among the identified biomass derivatives, furfural (FF) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) stand out as rich building blocks and can be directly produced from pentose and hexose sugars, respectively. In the past decades, much attention has been attracted to the selective hydrogenation of FF and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural using various heterogeneous catalysts. This review evaluates the recent progress of developing different heterogeneous catalytic materials, such as noble/non-noble metal particles, solid acids/bases, and alkali metal salts, for the efficient reduction of bio-based furanic aldehydes to alcohols. Emphasis is laid on the insights and challenges encountered in those biomass transformation processes, along with the focus on the understanding of reaction mechanisms to clarify the catalytic role of specific active species. Brief outlook is also made for further optimization of the catalytic systems and processes for the upgrading of biofuranic compounds.

Abstract
Mesostructured aluminum phosphonates (AOP-x) bridging with 1,1'-hydroxyl ethylidene groups, including a lamellar mesostructure (AOP-N) with crystalline framework, a well-ordered 2D-hexagonal mesophase (AOP-Cl), and a particle-packed mesostructure (AOP-S), were simply synthesized in the presence of surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide in the ethanol-water system, by choosing Al(NO3)3, AlCl3 and Al2(SO4)3 as the aluminum source, respectively. The crystallinity, morphology, mesophase, and skeletal structure of the as-prepared materials were characterized by XRD, TEM, SEM, 27Al, 31P and 13C MAS NMR, and nitrogen sorption techniques. After calcination under N2 at 350 °C, the calcined AOP-x samples consist of aluminum phosphonate and phosphate, possessing desirable specific surface areas of 116-585 m2/g. The effect of the inorganic counteranions (NO3-, Cl- and SO42-) from the aluminum source on the formation of different AOP-x mesostructures was discussed in terms of their bind strength to the headgroups of the surfactant micelles, suggesting the potential for designed synthesis of non-silica-based mesostructured organic-inorganic hybrid materials.

Abstract
Designing a new porous nanomaterial for eco-friendly catalytic reactions is very challenging. Here, a new crystalline microporous oxyfluorinated titanium phosphate material (TIPO-1) has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions in the absence of any structure directing agent. The triclinic crystalline phase with the unit cell parameters a=7.962Å, b=10.006Å, c=13.979Å, α=96.921°, β=95.851° and γ=93.760° has been indexed for TIPO-1 and it has been characterized through powder X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, XPS, FT-IR, 31P MAS NMR spectroscopy, UHR-TEM, FE-SEM and TGA/DTA analysis. The material exhibited excellent catalytic activity in liquid phase partial oxidation of cyclohexanone to adipic acid (up to 92% conversion) in the presence of aqueous H2O2 as oxidant together with value added side products like 1,6-hexandial and ε-caprolactone for reactions in different solvents. The material showed excellent recycling efficiency for six consecutive reaction cycles without any significant loss in catalytic activity.
