Abstract
The hydrogenation of nitroarenes to aromatic amines with H2 under solvent-free conditions in place of organic solvents is a crucial process for the synthesis of fine chemicals. However, the catalysts that have been identified so far are relatively inactive with primary nitroarenes under solvent-free conditions. Herein, ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC)-supported highly dispersed Ru nanoparticles (Ru NPs) were easily prepared by using a coordination-assisted solvent evaporation induced co-assembly method, where 8-hydroxyquinoline exerts a significant influence on the mesostructure ordering and specific surface area of the Ru/OMC composites. The ultrasmall-sized Ru NPs (∼2.0 nm) supported on ordered mesoporous carbon were then applied in the hydrogenation of nitroarenes, exhibiting high activity and selectivity for numerous structurally diverse nitroarenes under solvent-free conditions. Compared with Ru/OMC-imp and Ru/AC-imp, Ru/OMC-800 exhibited a much higher activity and selectivity for hydrogenation of nitroarenes, suggesting its overwhelmingly better performance than OMC or AC supporting noble NPs by simple impregnation method. The strong metal-support interaction is capable of stabilizing the Ru NPs and achieving good recyclability as well as high selectivity.

Supported Bimetallic AuPd Nanoparticles as a Catalyst for the Selective Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes. NANOMATERIALS 2018; 8:nano8090690. Abstract
The solvent-free selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene was carried out using a supported AuPd nanoparticles catalyst, prepared by the modified impregnation method (MIm), as efficient catalyst >99% yield of aniline (AN) was obtained after 15 h at 90 °C, 3 bar H2 that can be used without any further purification or separation, therefore reducing cost and energy input. Supported AuPd nanoparticles catalyst, prepared by MIm, was found to be active and stable even after four recycle experiments, whereas the same catalyst prepared by SIm was deactivated during the recycle experiments. The most effective catalyst was tested for the chemoselective hydrogenation of 4-chloronitrobenzene (CNB) to 4-chloroaniline (CAN). The activation energy of CNB to CAN was found to be 25 kJ mol−1, while that of CNB to AN was found to be 31 kJ mol−1. Based on this, the yield of CAN was maximized (92%) by the lowering the reaction temperature to 25 °C.

Abstract
The use of water as a donor for hydrogen suitable for the reduction of several important classes of organic compounds is described. It is found that the reductive water splitting can be promoted by several metalloids among which silicon shows the best efficiency. The developed methodologies were applied for the reduction of nitro compounds, N-oxides, sulfoxides, alkenes, alkynes, hydrodehalogenation as well as for the gram-scale synthesis of several substrates of industrial importance.

Abstract
Functionalized nanoporous carbon materials have attracted the colossal interest of the materials science fraternity owing to their intriguing physical and chemical properties including a well-ordered porous structure, exemplary high specific surface areas, electronic and ionic conductivity, excellent accessibility to active sites, and enhanced mass transport and diffusion. These properties make them a special and unique choice for various applications in divergent fields such as energy storage batteries, supercapacitors, energy conversion fuel cells, adsorption/separation of bulky molecules, heterogeneous catalysts, catalyst supports, photocatalysis, carbon capture, gas storage, biomolecule detection, vapour sensing and drug delivery. Because of the anisotropic and synergistic effects arising from the heteroatom doping at the nanoscale, these novel materials show high potential especially in electrochemical applications such as batteries, supercapacitors and electrocatalysts for fuel cell applications and water electrolysis. In order to gain the optimal benefit, it is necessary to implement tailor made functionalities in the porous carbon surfaces as well as in the carbon skeleton through the comprehensive experimentation. These most appealing nanoporous carbon materials can be synthesized through the carbonization of high carbon containing molecular precursors by using soft or hard templating or non-templating pathways. This review encompasses the approaches and the wide range of methodologies that have been employed over the last five years in the preparation and functionalisation of nanoporous carbon materials via incorporation of metals, non-metal heteroatoms, multiple heteroatoms, and various surface functional groups that mostly dictate their place in a wide range of practical applications.

Abstract
Mesoporous γ-alumina (γ-MA)-supported cobalt oxides (Co3O4) with large surface areas and narrow pore size distributions were first prepared through one-pot hydrolysis of metal nitrates. The obtained Co3O4/γ-MA materials were impregnated with a water-ethanol solution of 1,10-phenanthroline, followed by treatment at 700 °C in N2 atmosphere, generating Co-NC/γ-MA catalysts containing N-doped graphitic carbon (NC). The Co-NC/γ-MA catalysts maintained the mesoporous structure of γ-MA, and Co3O4 was reduced to metallic Co nanoparticles highly dispersed in the γ-MA frameworks. Metallic Co species had a strong interaction with NC in the matrices, avoiding the surface oxidation of Co particles. The Co-NC/γ-MA catalysts exhibited superior catalytic activity and quantitatively reduced a variety of functionalized nitroarenes to the corresponding arylamines with hydrazine hydrate in ethanol at near room temperature, affording yields of >99%. The recycling test of 2-chloronitrobenzene as a model reaction showed no detectable change in catalyst performance after 10 cycle reactions.
