Oxidation of Volatile Organic Compounds by Highly Efficient Metal Zeolite Catalysts

Essential Oils Encapsulated in Zeolite Structures as Delivery Systems (EODS): An Overview

Essential oils (EO) obtained from plants have proven industrial applications in the manufacturing of perfumes and cosmetics, in the production and flavoring of foods and beverages, as therapeutic agents in aromatherapy, and as the active principles or excipients of medicines and pharmaceutics due to their olfactory, physical-chemical, and biological characteristics. On behalf of the new paradigm of a more natural and sustainable lifestyle, EO are rather appealing due to their physical, chemical, and physiological actions in human beings. However, EO are unstable and susceptible to degradation or loss. To tackle this aspect, the encapsulation of EO in microporous structures as zeolites is an attractive solution, since these host materials are cheap and non-toxic to biological environments. This overview provides basic information regarding essential oils, including their recognized benefits and functional properties. Current progress regarding EO encapsulation in zeolite structures is also discussed, highlighting some representative examples of essential oil delivery systems (EODS) based on zeolites for healthcare applications or aromatherapy.

Facile synthesis of Pt-Ce0.63Zr0·37O2-Y catalysts and the application in catalytic oxidation of toluene

In this work, a series of Pt-Ce_0.63Zr_0·37O₂-Y catalysts were prepared by unique simple mechanical mixing method. The catalytic activity of these catalysts for toluene oxidation was investigated. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were characterized by XRD, ICP-MS, SEM, TEM, XPS and N₂ sorption. Pore size distribution was analyzed according nitrogen adsorption and desorption isotherms. The catalytic results showed that using NaY as support for Pt-Ce_0.63Zr_0·37O₂-Y could enhance the conversion of toluene during the oxidation process in comparison with HY. Further mixing cerium zirconium solid solution with Pt-NaY can improve the oxidation catalytic property of these catalysts. The conversion of toluene over Pt-Ce_0.63Zr_0·37O₂-NaY reached more than 90% at 200 °C. High catalytic stability was obtained for toluene oxidation over Pt-Ce_0.63Zr_0·37O₂-NaY. Platinum, cerium and zirconium can be uniformly dispersed on Y zeolite with small particle size by simple mechanical synthesis. The effect of drying methods on catalytic activity and hydrothermal stability of catalysts were also investigated in this research.

Fenton-Type Bimetallic Catalysts for Degradation of Dyes in Aqueous Solutions

Dye compounds are becoming a problematic class of pollutants for the environment, so it is important to develop stable catalysts for their elimination. First, several studies were performed with different Y zeolites (NaY, (NH4)Y and USY) in order to select the best support for the preparation of the bimetallic catalysts. In particular, NaY zeolite was used as the support for Fe, Cu and Mn metals to prepare mono and bimetallic Fenton-type catalysts by the ion exchange method. The catalysts were characterized by several techniques, such as chemical analysis, nitrogen physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cyclic voltammetry studies. Characterization results revealed that the metals were successfully ion-exchanged within the NaY zeolite. The prepared catalysts were tested for the aqueous-phase degradation of dye compounds (Procion yellow (PY) and Tartrazine (Tar)) at atmospheric pressure and different temperatures, using H2O2 as the oxidant. All the investigated samples were found to be active in degrading the dyes through the Fenton-type process; however, the oxidation rate was found to be higher in the presence of the bimetallic catalysts. CuFe-NaY displays the best mineralization rate for PY oxidation while MnFe-NaY shows the highest activity for Tar degradation. This work may provide further insight into the design of Fenton-type bimetallic catalysts with improved catalytic properties for environmental remediation.

Encapsulation and characterisation of cationic benzo[a]phenoxazines in zeolite HY
