Abstract
Integrating hematite nanostructures with efficient layer double hydroxides (LDHs) is highly desirable to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation performance. Here, an innovative and facile strategy is developed to fabricate the FeTi-LDH overlayer decorated Fe2 O3 /Fe2 TiO5 photoanode via a surface self-transformation induced by the co-treatment of hydrazine and NaOH at room temperature. Electrochemical measurements find that this favorable structure can not only facilitate the charge transfer/separation at the electrode/electrolyte interface but also accelerate the surface water oxidation kinetics. Consequently, the as-obtained Fe2 O3 /Fe2 TiO5 /LDH photoanode exhibits a remarkably increased photocurrent density of 3.54 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) accompanied by an obvious cathodic shift (≈140 mV) in the onset potential. This work opens up a new and effective pathway for the design of high-performance hematite photoanodes toward efficient PEC water oxidation.

Abstract
The charge separation/transport efficiency is relatively high in thin-film hematite photoanodes in which the distance for charge transport is short, but simultaneously the high loss of light absorption due to transmission is confronted. To increase light absorption in thin-film Fe2O3:Ti, commercial substrates such as Cu foil, Ag foil, and a mirror are adopted acting as back-reflectors and individually integrated with the Fe2O3:Ti electrode. The promotion effect of the commercial back-reflectors on the light absorption efficiency and photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of the hydrothermally prepared Fe2O3:Ti electrodes with a variety of film thicknesses is investigated. As a result, Ag foil and the mirror show favorable and equal efficacy while the promoting effect of Cu foil is limited. In addition, the photocurrent increment achieved by the Ag back-reflector decreases linearly along with the logarithmic of the film thickness and the optimized film thickness of the Fe2O3:Ti electrode is decreased from 520 to 290 nm. The high durability of Ag foil in the alkaline electrolyte during solar light irradiation is demonstrated. Furthermore, the reflective substrate also shows a promotion effect on the BiVO4 photoanode and CuBi2O4 photocathode, as well as the unbiased photocurrent from a tandem cell constituted by TiO2 and CuBi2O4. The charge separation/transport efficiency is relatively high in thin-film hematite photoanodes in which the distance for charge transport is short, but simultaneously the high loss of light absorption due to transmission is confronted.![]()

Abstract
BiVO4 has been widely used as a photoanode material, while the slow surface oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics still severely hinders its performance. Here, an efficient bimetallic cocatalyst (named FeSnOS) was obtained by post-annealing a Fe/Sn-containing metal chalcogenide coordination compound to enhance the OER activity of BiVO4. The synergistic effect of Fe and Sn species in the amorphous FeSnOS cocatalyst efficiently lowers the interface impedance of the photoanode, reduces the electrochemical reaction overpotential, and promotes the surface OER dynamics. At the same time, a type-II heterojunction was constructed due to the process of post-annealing, which efficiently improves the bulk phase charge separation efficiency of the photoanode. The obtained optimal photoanode (named FeSnOS-BiVO4) shows a photocurrent density of 3.1 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode, which is 3.4 times higher than that of the pristine BiVO4 photoanode, and its onset potential shifts negatively from 0.44 V to 0.25 V. This work presents a simple and effective method to build a bimetallic cocatalyst for improved photoelectrochemical performance, which extends the application of polymetallic metal chalcogenide complexes.

Abstract
Hydrogen (H2) has a significant potential to enable the global energy transition from the current fossil-dominant system to a clean, sustainable, and low-carbon energy system. While presently global H2 production is predominated by fossil-fuel feedstocks, for future widespread utilization it is of paramount importance to produce H2 in a decarbonized manner. To this end, photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has been proposed to be a highly desirable approach with minimal negative impact on the environment. Both semiconductor light-absorbers and hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) catalysts are essential components of an efficient PEC cell. It is well documented that loading electrocatalysts on semiconductor photoelectrodes plays significant roles in accelerating the HER/OER kinetics, suppressing surface recombination, reducing overpotentials needed to accomplish HER/OER, and extending the operational lifetime of semiconductors. Herein, how electrocatalyst coupling influences the PEC performance of semiconductor photoelectrodes is outlined. The focus is then placed on the major strategies developed so far for semiconductor/electrocatalyst coupling, including a variety of dry processes and wet chemical approaches. This Review provides a comprehensive account of advanced methodologies adopted for semiconductor/electrocatalyst coupling and can serve as a guideline for the design of efficient and stable semiconductor photoelectrodes for use in water splitting.

Abstract
Water oxidation represents the anodic reaction in most of the photoelectrosynthetic setups for artificial photosynthesis developed so far. The efficiency of the overall process strongly depends on the joint exploitation of good absorber domains and interfaces with minimized recombination pathways. To this end, we report on the effective coupling of thin-layer hematite with amorphous porous nickel-iron oxide catalysts prepared via pulsed laser deposition. The rational design of such composite photoelectrodes leads to the formation of a functional adaptive junction, with enhanced photoanodic properties with respect to bare hematite. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has contributed to shed light on the mechanisms of photocurrent generation, confirming the reduction of recombination pathways as the main contributor to the improved performances of the functionalized photoelectrodes. Our results highlight the importance of the amorphous catalysts' morphology, as dense and electrolyte impermeable layers hinder the pivotal charge compensation processes at the interface. The direct comparison with all-iron and all-nickel catalytic counterparts further confirms that control over the kinetics of both hole transfer and charge recombination, enabled by the adaptive junction, is key for the optimal operation of this kind of semiconductor/catalyst interfaces.
