Effects of Matching Facet Pairs of TiO 2 on Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Behaviors

Photocatalytic Transformation of Organics to Valuable Chemicals - Quo Vadis?

Recent development in photocatalysis is increasingly focused on transforming organic compounds toward producing fine chemicals. Simple, non-selective oxidation reactions (degradation of pollutants) and very demanding solar-to-chemical energy conversion processes (production of solar fuels) face severe economic limitations influenced by still low efficiency and insufficient stability of the systems. Synthesis of fine chemicals, including reductive and oxidative selective transformations, as well as C-C and C-N coupling reactions, can utilise the power of photocatalysis. Herein, we present the recent progress in photocatalytic systems designed to synthesise fine chemicals. In particular, we discuss the factors influencing the efficiency and selectivity of the organic transformations, dividing them into intrinsic (related to individual properties of photocatalysts) and extrinsic (originating from the reaction environment). A rational design of the photocatalytic systems, based on a deep understanding of these factors, opens new perspectives for applied photocatalysis.

Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) for Photoelectrochemical CO2 Reduction: Efficiency, Selectivity, and Stability

Massive emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) have caused environmental issues like global warming, which needs to be addressed. Researchers have developed numerous methods to reduce CO2 emissions. Among these, photoelectrochemical (PEC) CO2 reduction is a promising method for mitigating CO2 emissions. Recently, Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) has been recognized as good photocathode candidate in PEC systems for CO2 reduction due to its earth abundance and non-toxicity, as well as its favourable optical/electrical properties. The performance of PEC CO2 reduction can be evaluated based on its efficiency, selectivity, and stability, which are significantly influenced by the photocathode materials. As a result, researchers have applied various strategies to improve the performance of CZTS photocathodes, including band structure engineering and surface catalytic site engineering. This review provides an overview of advanced methods to enhance the PEC systems for CO2 reduction, focusing on CZTS.

Electrospun silk nanofiber loaded with Ag-doped TiO2 with high-reactive facet as multifunctional air filter

Particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are air pollution that can cause high risk to public health. To protect individuals from air pollution exposure, fibrous filters have been widely employed. In this work, we develop silk nanofibers, which are loaded with Ag-doped TiO2 nanoparticles with exposed (001) (assigned as Ag-TiO2-silk), via electrospinning method and utilized them as multifunctional air filters that can efficiently reduce PM2.5, organic pollutants and microbials. The results showed that Ag-TiO2-silk with a loading of 1 wt% (1%Ag-TiO2-silk) exhibited the best performance among various different Ag-doped samples, as it performed the best as an air filter, which had the highest PM2.5 removal efficiency of 99.04 ± 1.70% with low pressure drop of 34.3 Pa, and also exhibited the highest photodegradation efficiency of formaldehyde. In addition, the Ag-TiO2-silk demonstrated antibacterial activity. These properties make silk composite nanofibers attractive for multifunctional and environmentally-friendly air filter application.

Dual functional WO3/BiVO4 heterostructures for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting and glycerol degradation

Dual functional heterojunctions of tungsten oxide and bismuth vanadate (WO₃/BiVO₄) photoanodes are developed and their applications in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting and mineralization of glycerol are demonstrated. The thin-film WO₃/BiVO₄ photoelectrode was fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method. The morphology, chemical composition, crystalline structure, chemical state, and optical absorption properties of the WO₃/BiVO₄ photoelectrodes were characterized systematically. The WO₃/BiVO₄ photoelectrode exhibits a good distribution of elements and a well-crystalline monoclinic WO₃ and monoclinic scheelite BiVO₄. The light-absorption spectrum of the WO₃/BiVO₄ photoelectrodes reveals a broad absorption band in the visible light region with a maximum absorption of around 520 nm. The dual functional WO₃/BiVO₄ photoelectrodes achieved a high photocurrent density of 6.85 mA cm^-2, which is 2.8 times higher than that of the pristine WO₃ photoelectrode in the presence of a mixture of 0.5 M Na₂SO₄ and 0.5 M glycerol electrolyte under AM 1.5 G (100 mW cm^-2) illumination. The superior PEC performance of the WO₃/BiVO₄ photoelectrode was attributed to the synergistic effects of the superior crystal structure, light absorption, and efficient charge separation. Simultaneously, glycerol plays an essential role in increasing the efficiency of hydrogen production by suppressing charge recombination in the water redox reaction. Moreover, the WO₃/BiVO₄ photoelectrode shows the total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency of glycerol at about 82% at 120 min. Notably, the WO₃/BiVO₄ photoelectrode can be a promising photoelectrode for simultaneous hydrogen production and mineralization of glycerol with a simple, economical, and environmentally friendly approach.

Room-temperature ammonia gas sensing via Au nanoparticle-decorated TiO2 nanosheets

A high-performance gas sensor operating at room temperature is always favourable since it simplifies the device fabrication and lowers the operating power by eliminating a heater. Herein, we fabricated the ammonia (NH₃) gas sensor by using Au nanoparticle-decorated TiO₂ nanosheets, which were synthesized via two distinct processes: (1) preparation of monolayer TiO₂ nanosheets through flux growth and a subsequent chemical exfoliation and (2) decoration of Au nanoparticles on the TiO₂ nanosheets via hydrothermal method. Based on the morphological, compositional, crystallographic, and surface characteristics of this low-dimensional nano-heterostructured material, its temperature- and concentration-dependent NH₃ gas-sensing properties were investigated. A high response of ~ 2.8 was obtained at room temperature under 20 ppm NH₃ gas concentration by decorating Au nanoparticles onto the surface of TiO₂ nanosheets, which generated oxygen defects and induced spillover effect as well.

Modulating Co-catalyst/Facet Junction for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Rational construction of electric field via assembling appropriate co-catalysts on anisotropic facets is of great significance for improving the photogenerated charge separation efficiency. However, this strategy usually gives rise to Fermi-level pinning which is not contributive to the charge separation but deleterious to the photoelectrochemical performance through consuming the measurable photovoltage. Herein, we demonstrate that manganese dioxide electrodeposited on the (111) facet of titanium dioxide nanorods could tremendously boost the catalytic activity of pristine photoanode via a stronger interface electric field and less photovoltage decay compared with the counterpart grown on the (110) facet. A photocurrent density of 1.65 mA·cm^-2 at 1.23 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode), nearly the theoretical maximum of titanium dioxide, is achieved by the optimum photoanode with an extremely high separation efficiency of 95.15%. This study offers more in-depth insights into the design of carrier separation strategy through loading co-catalysts on different substrate surfaces for more efficient solar energy conversion.

Recent Advances in Photocatalytic Oxidation of Methane to Methanol

Methane is one of the promising alternatives to non-renewable petroleum resources since it can be transformed into added-value hydrocarbon feedstocks through suitable reactions. The conversion of methane to methanol with a higher chemical value has recently attracted much attention. The selective oxidation of methane to methanol is often considered a “holy grail” reaction in catalysis. However, methanol production through the thermal catalytic process is thermodynamically and economically unfavorable due to its high energy consumption, low catalyst stability, and complex reactor maintenance. Photocatalytic technology offers great potential to carry out unfavorable reactions under mild conditions. Many in-depth studies have been carried out on the photocatalytic conversion of methane to methanol. This review will comprehensively provide recent progress in the photocatalytic oxidation of methane to methanol based on materials and engineering perspectives. Several aspects are considered, such as the type of semiconductor-based photocatalyst (tungsten, titania, zinc, etc.), structure modification of photocatalyst (doping, heterojunction, surface modification, crystal facet re-arrangement, and electron scavenger), factors affecting the reaction process (physiochemical characteristic of photocatalyst, operational condition, and reactor configuration), and briefly proposed reaction mechanism. Analysis of existing challenges and recommendations for the future development of photocatalytic technology for methane to methanol conversion is also highlighted.

Insight into the Roles of Metal Loading on CO2 Photocatalytic Reduction Behaviors of TiO2

The photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO₂) into value-added chemicals is considered to be a green and sustainable technology, and has recently gained considerable research interest. In this work, titanium dioxide (TiO₂) supported Pt, Pd, Ni, and Cu catalysts were synthesized by photodeposition. The formation of various metal species on an anatase TiO₂ surface, after ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation, was investigated insightfully by the X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) technique. CO₂ reduction under UV-light irradiation at an ambient pressure was demonstrated. To gain an insight into the charge recombination rate during reduction, the catalysts were carefully investigated by the intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The catalytic behaviors of the catalysts were investigated by density functional theory using the self-consistent Hubbard U-correction (DFT+U) approach. In addition, Mott–Schottky measurement was employed to study the effect of energy band alignment of metal-semiconductor on CO₂ photoreduction. Heterojunction formed at Pt-, Pd-, Ni-, and Cu-TiO₂ interface has crucial roles on the charge recombination and the catalytic behaviors. Furthermore, it was found that Pt-TiO₂ provides the highest methanol yield of 17.85 µmol/g_cat/h, and CO as a minor product. According to the IMPS data, Pt-TiO₂ has the best charge transfer ability, with the mean electron transit time of 4.513 µs. We believe that this extensive study on the junction between TiO₂ could provide a profound understanding of catalytic behaviors, which will pave the way for rational designs of novel catalysts with improved photocatalytic performance for CO₂ reduction.

Crystal Facet Engineering of TiO2 Nanostructures for Enhancing Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting with BiVO4 Nanodots

Although bismuth vanadate (BiVO₄) has been promising as photoanode material for photoelectrochemical water splitting, its charge recombination issue by short charge diffusion length has led to various studies about heterostructure photoanodes. As a hole blocking layer of BiVO₄, titanium dioxide (TiO₂) has been considered unsuitable because of its relatively positive valence band edge and low electrical conductivity. Herein, a crystal facet engineering of TiO₂ nanostructures is proposed to control band structures for the hole blocking layer of BiVO₄ nanodots. We design two types of TiO₂ nanostructures, which are nanorods (NRs) and nanoflowers (NFs) with different (001) and (110) crystal facets, respectively, and fabricate BiVO₄/TiO₂ heterostructure photoanodes. The BiVO₄/TiO₂ NFs showed 4.8 times higher photocurrent density than the BiVO₄/TiO₂ NRs. Transient decay time analysis and time-resolved photoluminescence reveal the enhancement is attributed to the reduced charge recombination, which is originated from the formation of type II band alignment between BiVO₄ nanodots and TiO₂ NFs. This work provides not only new insights into the interplay between crystal facets and band structures but also important steps for the design of highly efficient photoelectrodes.

Surface plasmon-driven photoelectrochemical water splitting of a Ag/TiO2 nanoplate photoanode

A silver/titanium dioxide nanoplate (Ag/TiO2 NP) photoelectrode was designed and fabricated from vertically aligned TiO2 nanoplates (NP) decorated with silver nanoparticles (NPs) through a simple hydrothermal synthesis and electrodeposition route. The electrodeposition times of Ag NPs on the TiO2 NP were crucial for surface plasmon-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting performance. The Ag/TiO2 NP at the optimal deposition time of 5 min with a Ag element content of 0.53 wt% demonstrated a remarkably high photocurrent density of 0.35 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE under AM 1.5G illumination, which was 5 fold higher than that of the pristine TiO2 NP. It was clear that the enhanced light absorption properties and PEC performance for Ag/TiO2 NP could be effectively adjusted by simply controlling the loading amounts of metallic Ag NPs (average size of 10-30 nm) at different electrodeposition times. The superior PEC performance of the Ag/TiO2 NP photoanode was attributed to the synergistic effects of the plasmonic Ag NPs and the TiO2 nanoplate. Interestingly, the plasmonic effect of Ag NPs not only increased the visible-light response (λ max = 570 nm) of TiO2 but also provided hot electrons to promote photocurrent generation and suppress charge recombination. Importantly, this study offers a potentially efficient strategy for the design and fabrication of a new type of TiO2 hybrid nanostructure with a plasmonic enhancement for PEC water splitting.

Crystal facet and phase engineering for advanced water splitting

This review covers the principles and recent advances in facet and phase engineering of catalysts for photocatalytic, photoelectrochemical, and electrochemical water splitting. It suggests the basis of catalyst design for advanced water splitting.

Three-Dimensional Hierarchical Porous TiO2 for Enhanced Adsorption and Photocatalytic Degradation of Remazol Dye

Three-dimensional hierarchical mesoporous structures of titanium dioxide (3D-HPT) were synthesized by self-assembly emulsion polymerization. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and pluronic 123 (P123) were used as the soft templates and co-templates for assisting the formation of hierarchical 3D porous structures. The TiO2 crystal structure, morphology, and Remazol red dye degradation were investigated. The 3D-HPT and normal three-dimensional titanium dioxide (3D-T) presented the good connection of the nanoparticle-linked honeycomb within the form of anatase. The 3D-HPT structure showed greatly enhanced adsorption of Remazol dye, and facilitated the efficient photocatalytic breakdown of the dye. Surprisingly, 3D-HPT can adsorb approximately 40% of 24 ppm Remazol dye in the dark, which is superior to 3D-T and the commercial anatase at the same condition (approx. 5%). Moreover, 3D-HPT can completely decolorize Remazol dye within just 20 min, which is more than three folds faster than the commercial anatase, making it one of the most active photocatalysts that have been reported for degradation of Remazol dye. The superior photocatalytic performance is attributed to the higher specific surface area, amplified light-harvesting efficiency, and enhanced adsorption capacity into the hierarchical 3D inverse opal structure compared to the commercial anatase TiO2.
