Metal‐Terpyridine Complexes in Catalytic Application – A Spotlight on the Last Decade

Cyclometalated luminescent platinum(II) complexes of dissymmetrical 2,2':4',2''-terpyridine and its self-assembled dimer presenting Pt-Ag dative bonds

A series of cyclometalated (N^C^N) Pt(II)-platinum complexes featuring a terpyridine ligand with a non-coordinating nitrogen atom and a Pt-C bond was synthesized. In the presence of Ag+, the bis(isonitrile)Pt(II) complex formed a remarkable self-assembled helicoidal dimer stabilized by coordination of Ag(I) and metallophilic Pt-Ag interactions. Its assembly was observed in the solid state and maintained in solution. All complexes show strong luminescence and multiple emitting states, which could be rationalized based on solid state X-ray structures and coordinating environment.

Synthesis, characterization and structural analysis of complexes from 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine derivatives with transition metals

The synthesis and structural characterization of three families of coordination complexes synthesized from 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (8, Ph-TPY), 4'-(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (9, ClPh-TPY) and 4'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (10, MeOPh-TPY) ligands with the divalent metals Co2+, Fe2+, Mn2+ and Ni2+ are reported. The compounds were synthesized from a 1:2 mixture of the metal and ligand, resulting in a series of complexes with the general formula [M(R-TPY)2](ClO4)2 (where M = Co2+, Fe2+, Mn2+ and Ni2+, and R-TPY = Ph-TPY, ClPh-TPY and MeOPh-TPY). The general formula and structural and supramolecular features were determinated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction for bis(4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine)nickel(II) bis(perchlorate), [Ni(C21H15N3)2](ClO4)2 or [Ni(Ph-TPY)2](ClO4)2, bis[4'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine]manganese(II) bis(perchlorate), [Mn(C22H17N3O)2](ClO4)2 or [Mn(MeOPh-TPY)2](ClO4)2, and bis(4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine)manganese(II) bis(perchlorate), [Mn(C21H15N3)2](ClO4)2 or [Mn(Ph-TPY)2](ClO4)2. In all three cases, the complexes present distorted octahedral coordination polyhedra and the crystal packing is determined mainly by weak C-H...π interactions. All the compounds (except for the Ni derivatives, for which FT-IR, UV-Vis and thermal analysis are reported) were fully characterized by spectroscopic (FT-IR, UV-Vis and NMR spectroscopy) and thermal (TGA-DSC, thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimetry) methods.

Cyclometalated and NNN Terpyridine Ruthenium Photocatalysts and Their Cytotoxic Activity

The cyclometalated terpyridine complexes [Ru(η2-OAc)(NC-tpy)(PP)] (PP = dppb 1, (R,R)-Skewphos 4, (S,S)-Skewphos 5) are easily obtained from the acetate derivatives [Ru(η2-OAc)2(PP)] (PP = dppb, (R,R)-Skewphos 2, (S,S)-Skewphos 3) and tpy in methanol by elimination of AcOH. The precursors 2, 3 are prepared from [Ru(η2-OAc)2(PPh3)2] and Skewphos in cyclohexane. Conversely, the NNN complexes [Ru(η1-OAc)(NNN-tpy)(PP)]OAc (PP = (R,R)-Skewphos 6, (S,S)-Skewphos 7) are synthesized in a one pot reaction from [Ru(η2-OAc)2(PPh3)2], PP and tpy in methanol. The neutral NC-tpy 1, 4, 5 and cationic NNN-tpy 6, 7 complexes catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone (S/C = 1000) in 2-propanol with NaOiPr under light irradiation at 30 °C. Formation of (S)-1-phenylethanol has been observed with 4, 6 in a MeOH/iPrOH mixture, whereas the R-enantiomer is obtained with 5, 7 (50-52% ee). The tpy complexes show cytotoxic activity against the anaplastic thyroid cancer 8505C and SW1736 cell lines (ED50 = 0.31-8.53 µM), with the cationic 7 displaying an ED50 of 0.31 µM, four times lower compared to the enantiomer 6.

Synthesis of a Triangle-Fused Six-Pointed Star and Its Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction Activity

As electrocatalysts, molecular catalysts with large aromatic systems (such as terpyridine, porphyrin, or phthalocyanine) have been widely applied in the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, these monomeric catalysts tend to aggregate due to strong π-π interactions, resulting in limited accessibility of the active site. In light of these challenges, we present a novel strategy of active site isolation for enhancing the CO2RR. Six Ru(Tpy)2 were integrated into the skeleton of a metallo-organic supramolecule by stepwise self-assembly in order to form a rhombus-fused six-pointed star R1 with active site isolation. The turnover frequency (TOF) of R1 was as high as 10.73 s-1 at -0.6 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE), which is the best reported value so far at the same potential to our knowledge. Furthermore, by increasing the connector density on R1's skeleton, a more stable triangle-fused six-pointed star T1 was successfully synthesized. T1 exhibits exceptional stability up to 126 h at -0.4 V vs RHE and excellent TOF values of CO. The strategy of active site isolation and connector density increment significantly enhanced the catalytic activity by increasing the exposure of the active site. This work provides a starting point for the design of molecular catalysts and facilitates the development of a new generation of catalysts with a high catalytic performance.

Ligand-Promoted Iron-Catalyzed Nitrene Transfer for the Synthesis of Hydrazines and Triazanes through N-Amidation of Arylamines

Herein, we report that bulky alkylphosphines such as PtBu3 can switch the roles from actor to spectator ligands to promote the FeCl2 -catalyzed N-amidation reaction of arylamines with dioxazolones, giving hydrazides in high efficiency and chemoselectivity. Mechanistic studies indicated that the phosphine ligands could facilitate the decarboxylation of dioxazolones on the Fe center, and the hydrogen bonding interactions between the arylamines and the ligands on Fe nitrenoid intermediates might play a role in modulating the delicate interplay between the phosphine ligand, arylamine, and acyl nitrene N, favoring N-N coupling over N-P coupling. The new ligand-promoted N-amidation protocols offer a convenient way to access various challenging triazane compounds via double or sequential N-amidation of primary arylamines.

Sterically attenuated electronic communication in cobalt complexes of meridional isoquinoline-derived ligands for applications in electrocatalysis

The ability to synthetically tune the ligand frameworks of redox-active molecules is of critical importance to the economy of solar fuels because manipulating their redox properties can afford control over the operating potentials of sustained electrocatalytic or photoelectrocatalytic processes. The electronic and steric properties of 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (Terpy) ligand frameworks can be tuned by functional group substitution on ligand backbones, and these correlate strongly to their Hammett parameters. The synthesis of a new series of tridentate meridional ligands of 2,4,6-trisubstituted pyridines that engineers the ability to finely tune the redox potentials of cobalt complexes to more positive potentials than that of their Terpy analogs is achieved by aryl-functionalizing at the four-position and by including isoquinoline at the two- and six-positions of pyridine (Aryl-DiQ). Their cobalt complex syntheses, their electronic properties, and their catalytic activity for carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction are reported and compared to their Terpy analogs. The cobalt derivatives generally experience a positive shift in their redox features relative to the Terpy-based analogs, covering a complementary potential range. Although those evaluated fail to produce any quantifiable products for the reduction of CO2 and suffer from long-term instability, these results suggest possible alternate strategies for stabilizing these compounds during catalysis. We speculate that lower equilibrium association constants to the cobalt center are intrinsic to these ligands, which originate from a steric interaction between protons on the pyridine and isoquinoline moieties. Nevertheless, the new Aryl-DiQ ligand framework has been engineered to selectively tune homoleptic cobalt complexes' redox potentials.

Two Novel Neutral Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes Based on 10,11,12,13-Tetrahydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine for Efficient Red Electroluminescence

Two novel neutral phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes (Ir1 and Ir2) were rationally designed and synthesized with high yields using 10,11,12,13-tetrahydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine as the main ligand. The two complexes showed bright-red phosphorescence (625 nm for Ir1, and 620 nm for Ir2, in CH₂Cl₂), high-luminescence quantum efficiency (0.32 for Ir1, and 0.35 for Ir2), obvious solvatochromism and good thermostability. Then, they were used to fabricate high-efficiency red OLEDs via vacuum evaporation; the maximum current efficiency, power efficiency, and external quantum efficiency of the red devices based on Ir1 and Ir2 are 13.47/15.22 cd/A, 10.35/12.26 lm/W, and 10.08/7.48%, respectively.

Terpyridine Glycoconjugates and Their Metal Complexes: Antiproliferative Activity and Proteasome Inhibition

Metal terpyridine complexes have gained substantial interest in many application fields, such as catalysis and supramolecular chemistry. In recent years, the biological activity of terpyridine and its metal complexes has aroused considerable regard. On this basis, we synthesised new terpyridine derivatives of trehalose and glucose to improve the water solubility of terpyridine ligands and target them in cancer cells through glucose transporters. Glucose derivative and its copper(II) and iron(II) complexes showed antiproliferative activity. Interestingly, trehalose residue reduced the cytotoxicity of terpyridine. Moreover, we tested the ability of parent terpyridine ligands and their copper complexes to inhibit proteasome activity as an antineoplastic mechanism.

Push-Pull Effect of Terpyridine Substituted by Triphenylamine Motive—Impact of Viscosity, Polarity and Protonation on Molecular Optical Properties

The introduction of an electron-donating triphenylamine motive into a 2,2′,6′,2′′-terpyridine (terpy) moiety, a cornerstone molecular unit in coordination chemistry, opens new ways for a rational design of photophysical properties of organic and inorganic compounds. A push-pull compound, 4′-(4-(di(4-tert-butylphenyl)amine)phenyl)-2,2′,6′,2′′-terpyridine (tBuTPAterpy), was thoroughly investigated with the use of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopies and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Our results demonstrate that solvent parameters have an enormous influence on the optical properties of this molecule, acting as knobs for external control of its photophysics. The Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT) process introduces a remarkable solvent polarity effect on the emission spectra without affecting the lowest absorption band, as confirmed by DFT simulations, including solvation effects. The calculations ascribe the lowest absorption transitions to two singlet ICT excited states, S₁ and S₂, with S₁ having several orders of magnitude higher oscillator strength than the “dark” S₂ state. Temperature and viscosity investigations suggest the existence of two emitting excited states with different structural conformations. The phosphorescence emission band observed at 77 K is assigned to a localized ³terpy state. Finally, protonation studies show that tBuTPAterpy undergoes a reversible process, making it a promising probe of the pH level in the context of acidity determination.

Preparation of Substituted Pyridines via a Coupling of β-Enamine Carbonyls with Rongalite-Application for Synthesis of Terpyridines

A Hantzsch-type strategy for the synthesis of 2,3,5,6-tetrasubstituted pyridines via an oxidative coupling of β-enamine carbonyl compounds with rongalite was developed. This method employs rongalite as a C1 unit for the assembly of a pyridine ring at C-4 position, offering a facile method for the preparation of substituted pyridine derivatives with a broad functional group tolerance. In particular, this method allows us to prepare terpyridine derivatives, which are important ligands or structural fragments for catalysts and 3D metal–organic frameworks.

Coordination Polymers with 2,2':6',2″-Terpyridine Earth-Abundant Metal Complex Units for Selective CO2 Photoreduction

Combining molecular metal complexes into coordination polymers (CPs) is an effective strategy for developing photocatalysts for CO₂ reduction; however, most such reported catalysts are noble metal-containing CPs. Herein, two novel Zr-containing bimetallic CPs, Co-Zr and Ni-Zr, were designed and successfully synthesized by connecting 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine-based molecular earth-abundant metal (Co or Ni) complexes with ZrO₈ nodes. Both CPs were applied as catalysts for CO₂ photoreduction to selectively produce CO. The catalytic performance of Co-Zr is better than that of Ni-Zr with a yield of 3654 μmol (g of catalyst)^-1 for CO in 6 h (TON = 18.2). The difference between these two catalysts was analyzed with respect to band structure and charge migration ability. This work provides an effective way to introduce molecular earth-abundant metal complexes into coordination polymers for the construction of efficient noble metal-free CO₂ photocatalysts.

Supramolecular systems prepared using terpyridine-containing pillararene

Recent progresses about the preparation of terpyridine-containing pillararene, as well as the utilization of those building blocks for making external stimulud-responsive supramolecular systems were summarized in this review.

In-Depth Studies of Ground- and Excited-State Properties of Re(I) Carbonyl Complexes Bearing 2,2':6',2″-Terpyridine and 2,6-Bis(pyrazin-2-yl)pyridine Coupled with π-Conjugated Aryl Chromophores

In the current work, comprehensive photophysical and electrochemical studies were performed for eight rhenium(I) complexes incorporating 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (terpy) and 2,6-bis(pyrazin-2-yl)pyridine (dppy) with appended 1-naphthyl-, 2-naphthyl-, 9-phenanthrenyl, and 1-pyrenyl groups. Naphthyl and phenanthrenyl substituents marginally affected the energy of the MLCT absorption and emission bands, signaling a weak electronic coupling of the appended aryl group with the Re(I) center. The triplet MLCT state in these complexes is so low lying relative to the triplet ³IL_aryl that the thermal population of the triplet excited state delocalized on the organic chromophore is ineffective. The attachment of the electron-rich pyrenyl group resulted in a noticeable red shift and a significant increase in molar absorption coefficients of the lowest energy absorption of the resulting Re(I) complexes due to the contribution of intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) transitions occurring from the pyrenyl substituent to the terpy/dppy core. At 77 K, the excited states of [ReCl(CO)₃(Lⁿ-κ²N)] with 1-pyrenyl-functionalized ligands were found to have predominant ³IL_pyrene/³ILCT_{pyrene→terpy} character. The ³IL/³ILCT nature of the lowest energy excited state of [ReCl(CO)₃(4'-(1-pyrenyl)-terpy-κ²N)] was also evidenced by nanosecond transient absorption and time-resolved emission spectroscopy. Enhanced room-temperature emission lifetimes of the complexes [ReCl(CO)₃(Lⁿ-κ²N)] with 1-pyrenyl-substituted ligands are indicative of the thermal activation between ³MLCT and ³IL/³ILCT excited states. Deactivation pathways occurring upon light excitation in [ReCl(CO)₃(4'-(1-naphthyl)-terpy-κ²N)] and [ReCl(CO)₃(4'-(1-pyrenyl)-terpy-κ²N)] were determined by femtosecond transient absorption studies.

Fine-Tuning Metal and Ligand-Centered Redox Potentials of Homoleptic Bis-Terpyridine Complexes with 4'-Aryl Substituents

Homoleptic transition-metal complexes of 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (terpy) and substituted derivatives of the form [M(R-terpy)₂]²⁺ display a wide range of redox potentials that correlate well to the Hammett parameter of the terpy substituents. Less is known about the impact of incorporating a phenyl spacer between the functional group responsible for controlling the electron density of terpy and how that translates to metal complexes of the form [M(4'-aryl-terpy)₂]²⁺, where M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Zn. Herein, we report our studies on these complexes revealed a good correlation of redox potentials of both metal- and ligand-centered events with the Hammett parameters of the aryl substituents, regardless of aryl-substitution pattern (i.e., the presence of multiple functional groups, combinations of withdrawing and donating functional groups). The phenyl spacer results in 60-80% attenuation of electron density as compared to the 4'-substituted terpy analogue, depending on the metal and redox couple analyzed. Density functional theory calculations performed on a simple model system revealed a strong correlation between the Hammett parameters and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energies of the corresponding substituted pyridine models, thus serving as an inexpensive predictive tool when coupled with electrochemical data. Overall, these data suggest that such ligand modifications may be used in combination with previous approaches to further fine-tune the redox potentials of homoleptic transition-metal complexes, which may have applications in photochemical and electrochemical catalytic processes.

A comprehensive survey upon diverse and prolific applications of chitosan-based catalytic systems in one-pot multi-component synthesis of heterocyclic rings

Heterocyclic compounds are among the most prestigious and valuable chemical molecules with diverse and magnificent applications in various sciences. Due to the remarkable and numerous properties of the heterocyclic frameworks, the development of efficient and convenient synthetic methods for the preparation of such outstanding compounds is of great importance. Undoubtedly, catalysis has a conspicuous role in modern chemical synthesis and green chemistry. Therefore, when designing a chemical reaction, choosing and or preparing powerful and environmentally benign simple catalysts or complicated catalytic systems for an acceleration of the chemical reaction is a pivotal part of work for synthetic chemists. Chitosan, as a biocompatible and biodegradable pseudo-natural polysaccharide is one of the excellent choices for the preparation of suitable catalytic systems due to its unique properties. In this review paper, every effort has been made to cover all research articles in the field of one-pot synthesis of heterocyclic frameworks in the presence of chitosan-based catalytic systems, which were published roughly by the first quarter of 2020. It is hoped that this review paper can be a little help to synthetic scientists, methodologists, and catalyst designers, both on the laboratory and industrial scales.

Rhodium-terpyridine Catalyzed Transfer Hydrogenation of Aromatic Nitro Compounds in Water

A rhodium terpyridine complex catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of nitroarenes to anilines with i-PrOH as hydrogen source and water as solvent has been developed. The catalytic system can work at a substrate/catalyst (S/C) ratio of 2000, with a turnover frequency (TOF) up to 3360 h^-1 , which represents one of the most active catalytic transfer hydrogenation systems for nitroarene reduction. The catalytic system is operationally simple and the protocol could be scaled up to 20 gram scale. The water-soluble catalyst bearing a carboxyl group could be recycled 15 times without significant loss of activity.

Water-Assisted Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 to CO with Noble Metal-Free Bis(terpyridine)iron(II) Complexes and an Organic Photosensitizer

Photocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction is believed to be a promising approach for CO₂ utilization. In this work, a noble metal-free photocatalytic system, composed of bis(terpyridine)iron(II) complexes and an organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence compound, has been developed for selective reduction of CO₂ to CO with a maximum turnover number up to 6320, 99.4% selectivity, and turnover frequency of 127 min^-1 under visible-light irradiation in dimethylformamide/H₂O solution. More than 0.3 mmol CO was generated using 0.05 μmol catalyst after 2 h of light irradiation. The apparent quantum yield was found to be 9.5% at 440 nm (180 mW cm^-2). Control experiments and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy studies further demonstrated that water strongly promoted the photocatalytic cycle and terpyridine ligands rather than Fe(II) were initially reduced during the photocatalytic process.

A photoredox catalysed Heck reaction via hole transfer from a Ru(ii)-bis(terpyridine) complex to graphene oxide

The attachment of homoleptic Ru bis-terpy complexes on graphene oxide significantly improved the photocatalytic activity of the complexes. These straightforward complexes were applied as photocatalysts in a Heck reaction. Due to covalent functionalization on graphene oxide, which functions as an electron reservoir, excellent yields were obtained. DFT investigations of the charge redistribution revealed efficient hole transfer from the excited Ru unit towards the graphene oxide.

New derivatives of 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine as promising anticancer agents

Terpyridine derivatives are known from their broad application including anticancer properties. In this work we present the newly synthesized 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine group with high antiproliferative activity. We suggest that these compounds influence cellular redox homeostasis. Cancer cells are particularly susceptible to any changes in the redox balance because of their handicapped and inefficient antioxidant cellular systems. The antiproliferative activity of the studied compounds was tested on five different cell lines that represent several types of tumours; glioblastoma, leukemia, breast, pancreatic and colon. Additionally, we also tested their selectivity towards normal cells. We performed molecular biology studies in order to detect the response of a cell to its treatment with the compounds that were tested. We looked at the in-depth changes in the proteins and cellular pathways that lead to cell cycle inhibition (G0/G1 and S), and consequently, death on the apoptosis and autophagy pathways. We proved that the studied compounds targeted DNA as well. Special attention was paid to the targets connected with ROS generation.

Synthesis of terpyridine-containing polycarbonates with post polymerization providing water-soluble and micellar polymers and their metal complexes

Carbon dioxide based polymers synthesized from the metal-catalysed copolymeriation of epoxides and CO₂ containing the terpyridine ligand as an end group are reported.
