Catalytic Steam Reforming of Natural Gas over a New Ni Exsolved Ruddlesden‐Popper Manganite in SOFC Anode Conditions

In situ investigation of ruthenium doped lanthanum nickel titanium double perovskite and its exsolution behaviour

Exsolution, an innovative method for fabricating perovskite-based oxides decorated with metal nanoparticles, has garnered significant interest in the fields of catalyst fabrication and electrochemical devices. Although dopant exsolution from single perovskite structures has been extensively studied, the exsolution behaviour of double perovskite structures remains insufficiently understood. In this study, we synthesized B-site double perovskite Ru-doped lanthanum nickel titanates with a 7.5 at% A-site deficiency, and systematically investigated the exsolution process that formed nickel metal nanoparticles on the material surface, across a broad reduction temperature range of 350-1000 °C. Both Ex situ and in situ characterization revealed that small, uniform Ni nanoparticles exsolved at low temperatures, whereas the exsolution of ruthenium required higher reduction temperatures beyond 1000 °C. Within the reduction temperature range of 350-500 °C, a notable finding is the reconstruction of exsolved nanoparticles, implying that Ni particles exist in a thermodynamically metastable state. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed a decreased area specific resistance (ASR) during the progress of exsolution. The increase in current density of a full solid oxide cell (SOC) in electrolysis mode and the doubling of peak power density in fuel cell mode attributed to the exsolution of Ni nanoparticles highlight the potential application of metal exsolution in electrode materials for SOCs.

Exsolution of Co-Fe Alloy Nanoparticles on the PrBaFeCoO5+δ Layered Perovskite Monitored by Neutron Powder Diffraction and Catalytic Effect on Dry Reforming of Methane

Reversible exsolution and dissolution of metal nanoparticles (NPs) in complex oxides have been investigated as an efficient strategy to improve the performance and durability of the catalysts for thermal and electrochemical energy conversion. Here, in situ exsolution of Co-Fe alloy NPs from the layered perovskite PrBaFeCoO_5+δ (PBFC) and their dissolution back into the oxide host have been monitored for the first time by in situ neutron powder diffraction and confirmed by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Catalytic tests for dry reforming of methane showed stable operation over ∼100 h at 800 °C with negligible carbon deposition (<0.3 mg/g_cat h). The CO₂ and CH₄ conversions are among the highest achieved by layered double perovskites. The cyclability of the PBFC catalyst and the potential to improve the catalytic activity by adjusting the composition, size, and the NP distribution would pave the way for highly efficient energy conversion applications.

The Effect of Ni-Modified LSFCO Promoting Layer on the Gas Produced through Co-Electrolysis of CO2 and H2O at Intermediate Temperatures

The co-electrolysis of CO2 and H2O at an intermediate temperature is a viable approach for the power-to-gas conversion that deserves further investigation, considering the need for green energy storage. The commercial solid oxide electrolyser is a promising device, but it is still facing issues concerning the high operating temperatures and the improvement of gas value. In this paper we reported the recent findings of a simple approach that we have suggested for solid oxide cells, consisting of the addition of a functional layer coated to the fuel electrode of commercial electrochemical cells. This approach simplifies the transition to the next generation of cells manufactured with the most promising materials currently developed, and improves the gas value in the outlet stream of the cell. Here, the material in use as a coating layer consists of a Ni-modified La0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Co0.2O3, which was developed and demonstrated as a promising fuel electrode for solid oxide fuel cells. The results discussed in this paper prove the positive role of Ni-modified perovskite as a coating layer for the cathode, since an improvement of about twofold was obtained as regards the quality of gas produced.

Lanthanum Ferrites-Based Exsolved Perovskites as Fuel-Flexible Anode for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Exsolved perovskites can be obtained from lanthanum ferrites, such as La_0.6Sr_0.4Fe_0.8Co_0.2O₃, as result of Ni doping and thermal treatments. Ni can be simply added to the perovskite by an incipient wetness method. Thermal treatments that favor the exsolution process include calcination in air (e.g., 500 °C) and subsequent reduction in diluted H₂ at 800 °C. These processes allow producing a two-phase material consisting of a Ruddlesden–Popper-type structure and a solid oxide solution e.g., α-Fe_100-y-zCo_yNi_zO_x oxide. The formed electrocatalyst shows sufficient electronic conductivity under reducing environment at the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) anode. Outstanding catalytic properties are observed for the direct oxidation of dry fuels in SOFCs, including H₂, methane, syngas, methanol, glycerol, and propane. This anode electrocatalyst can be combined with a full density electrolyte based on Gadolinia-doped ceria or with La_0.8Sr_0.2Ga_0.8Mg_0.2O₃ (LSGM) or BaCe_0.9Y_0.1O_3-δ (BYCO) to form a complete perovskite structure-based cell. Moreover, the exsolved perovskite can be used as a coating layer or catalytic pre-layer of a conventional Ni-YSZ anode. Beside the excellent catalytic activity, this material also shows proper durability and tolerance to sulfur poisoning. Research challenges and future directions are discussed. A new approach combining an exsolved perovskite and an NiCu alloy to further enhance the fuel flexibility of the composite catalyst is also considered. In this review, the preparation methods, physicochemical characteristics, and surface properties of exsoluted fine nanoparticles encapsulated on the metal-depleted perovskite, electrochemical properties for the direct oxidation of dry fuels, and related electrooxidation mechanisms are examined and discussed.

The Role of Bi-Polar Plate Design and the Start-Up Protocol in the Spatiotemporal Dynamics during Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Anode Reduction

Start-up conditions largely dictate the performance longevity for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The SOFC anode is typically deposited as NiO-ceramic that is reduced to Ni-ceramic during start-up. Effective reduction is imperative to ensuring that the anode is electrochemically active and able to produce electronic and ionic current; the bi-polar plates (BPP) next to the anode allow the transport of current and gases, via land and channels, respectively. This study investigates a commercial SOFC stack that failed following a typical start-up procedure. The BPP design was found to substantially affect the spatiotemporal dynamics of the anode reduction; Raman spectroscopy detected electrochemically inactive NiO on the anode surface below the BPP land-contacts; X-ray computed tomography (CT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) identified associated contrasts in the electrode porosity, confirming the extension of heterogeneous features beyond the anode surface, towards the electrolyte-anode interface. Failure studies such as this are important for improving statistical confidence in commercial SOFCs and ultimately their competitiveness within the mass-market. Moreover, the spatiotemporal information presented here may aid in the development of novel BPP design and improved reduction protocol methods that minimize cell and stack strain, and thus maximize cell longevity.
