Catalytic Performance of MIL‐88B(V) and MIL‐101(V) MOFs for the Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with NH 3

Vanadium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks with Peroxidase-like Activity as a Colorimetric Sensing Platform for Direct Detection of Organophosphorus Pesticides

Colorimetry based on the bioenzyme inhibition strategy holds promising application prospects in the field of organophosphorus pesticide (OPs) detection. However, overcoming the challenges of the high cost and low stability of bioenzymes remains crucial. In this study, we successfully synthesized a peroxidase vanadium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) nanozyme named MIL-88B(V) and employed its mediated bioenzyme-free colorimetric strategy for direct OPs detection. The experimental results demonstrated that MIL-88B(V) exhibited a remarkable affinity and a remarkable catalytic rate. When the OPs target is added, it can be anchored on the MOF surface through a V-O-P bond, effectively inhibiting the MOF's activity. Subsequently, leveraging the advantages of smartphones such as convenience, speed, and sensitivity, we developed a paper sensor integrated into a smartphone for efficient OPs detection. The as-designed nanozyme-based colorimetric assay and paper sensor presented herein offer notable advantages, including affordability, speed, stability, wide adaptability, low cost, and accuracy in detecting OPs, thus providing a versatile and promising analytical approach for real sample analysis and allowing new applications of V-based MOF nanozymes.

Combined Effect of Hydrophilic Pore and the Type of Protons on Proton Conductivity in Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Feasible Approach to Achieve a Super Proton Conductor under Hydrated Conditions

There has been a steady growth of interest in proton-conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their potential utility in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. To attain a super proton conductivity (>1 × 10-2 S cm-1) in a MOF-based proton conductor is a key step toward practical application. Currently, most studies are focused on enhancing the proton conductivity of porous MOFs by controlling a single factor, such as the type of protons or hydrophilic pore or hydrogen bond. However, a limited contribution from a single factor cannot afford to remarkably increase the proton conductivity of the MOF and form a super proton conductor. Herein, we constructed two distinct porous MOFs, {(H3O+)4[Cu12(ci)12(OH)4(H2O)12]·3H2O·9DMF} (Cu-ci-3D, H2ci = 1H-indazole-5-carboxylic acid, DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide) and {[Co(Hppca)2]·2HN(CH3)2·CH3OH·2H2O} (Co-ppca-2D, H2ppca = 5-(pyridin-3-yl)-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid), to tune their proton conductivities at high relative humidity (RH) using the combined effect of hydrophilic pore and the type of protons, ultimately achieving super proton conduction. Excitingly, Cu-ci-3D indeed harvests a super proton conductivity of 1.37 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 353 K and ∼97% RH, superior to some previously reported MOF-based proton conductors. The results present a unique perspective for developing high-performance MOF-based proton conductors and understanding their structure-performance relationships.

Vanadium as a Ti-like mediator boosting electronic transmission in Fe-based MOFs for photocatalytic sterilization

Efficient metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) photocatalytic bactericidal catalysts are urgently needed in water purification. Herein, a Fe-MOF (MIL-88B-NH2(V1Fe5) with promoted electron transport was achieved by vanadium (V) ions doping and V/Fe ratio optimization, showing excellent photocatalytic bactericidal activity againstE. coliunder visible light irradiation (99.92%). The efficient antibacterial mechanism, V as a Ti-like mediator boosting electronic transmission in MIL-88B-NH2(V1Fe5), was revealed by its band structure, transient photocurrent, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scavenger quenching experiments. The enhancement of photocatalytic bactericidal performance of Fe-MOFs by V-ion-doping was confirmed by two other Fe-MOFs, MIL-53-NH2(V1Fe5) and MIL-101-NH2(V1Fe5), with the same metal ions and ligands, both of which have higher performance than the corresponding undoped MOFs. Among them, MIL-88B-NH2(V1Fe5) exhibits the highest photocatalytic bactericidal activity due to its suitable metal clusters ([M(μ3-O)] cluster) and topological structure (three-dimensional rhomboid network structure). This work demonstrated the amplification effect of V ion doping on electron transport in Fe-MOFs photocatalysts.

Insights into the Acidic Site in Manganese Oxide in Terms of the Sulfur and Water Tolerance of Low-Temperature NH3 Selective Catalytic Reduction

A critical constraint impeding the utilization of Mn-based oxide catalysts in NH3 selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) is their inadequate resistance to water and sulfur. This vulnerability primarily arises from the propensity of SO2 to bind to the acidic site in manganese oxide, resulting in the formation of metal sulfate and leading to the irreversible deactivation of the catalyst. Therefore, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the detrimental impact of SO2 on the acidic sites and elucidating the underlying mechanism of this toxicity are of paramount importance for the effective application of Mn-based catalysts in NH3-SCR. Herein, we strategically modulate the acidity of the manganese oxide catalyst surface through the incorporation of Ce and Nb. Comprehensive analyses, including thermogravimetry, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption, in situ diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations, reveal that SO2 exhibits a propensity for adsorption at strongly acidic sites. This mechanistic understanding underscores the pivotal role of surface acidity in governing the sulfur resistance of manganese oxide.

Bimetal NiCo-MOF-74 for highly selective NO capture from flue gas under ambient conditions

The mixed bimetal metal-organic framework Ni0.37Co0.63-MOF-74 has been constructed by the solvothermal method for NO adsorption. The results showed that bimetal Ni0.37Co0.63-MOF-74 takes up NO with a capacity of up to 174.3 cc g-1 under ambient conditions, which is 16.3% higher than that of the best single metal Co-MOF-74. The IAST adsorption selectivity for a NO/CO2 binary mixture can reach a maximum of 710 at low adsorption partial pressure, while the regeneration performance can be retained even after five cyclic adsorption-desorption experiments. Its separation performance was further confirmed by breakthrough experiments, indicating this new bimetal Ni0.37Co0.63-MOF-74 as one of the best materials for NO adsorption and separation in flue gas.

Nitric oxide detection using catalytic properties of CuCo-PTC metal organic framework

As a vital gaseous signal molecule involved in various physiological and pathological processes, nitric oxide (NO) has attracted extensive attention in the last few decades. In this work, a copper and cobalt element-doped, biphenyl-(3, 4', 5)-tricarboxylic acid (H₃PTC)-synthesized metal organic framework (CuCo-PTC MOF) composite with catalytic ability was synthesized by solvothermal method. The material can catalyse the oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) groups by hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) to form fluorophores (OPDox) with yellow fluorescence emission and greatly improves its reaction rate. In the presence of NO, OPD will react with NO to produce N-(2-hydrazinophenyl) methylamine, and the group will not react with H₂O₂. Therefore, the concentration of NO can be measured indirectly by comparing the changes of fluorescence intensity in the presence and absence of NO. As the concentration of NO changes, the change of solution colour (from bright yellow to colourless) can also be observed under a 365-nm UV lamp. Furthermore, the method represents high selectivity for NO and shows a fast (within 5 min) and specific fluorescence response toward NO with a linear range from 0.25 to 2.0 μM; the strategy has a limit of detection (LOD) of  0.15 μM. More importantly, the probe was successfully used to detect NO in cell lysate. The recovery was between 98.5 and 103.6%, and the relative standard deviation was between 0.4 and 1.8%. The endogenous NO in cells was successfully detected under the stimulation of L-arginine, which proved the possibility of the probe in real-time and rapid sensing in actual samples and cells.
