Steric Effects in the Catalytic Tandem Isomerization‐Hydrosilylation Reaction

Recent Advances on the Chemistry of Transition Metal Complexes with Monoanionic Bidentate Silyl Ligands

The chemistry of transition-metal (TM) complexes with monoanionic bidentate (κ2-L,Si) silyl ligands has considerably grown in recent years. This work summarizes the advances in the chemistry of TM-(κ2-L,Si) complexes (L=N-heterocycle, phosphine, N-heterocyclic carbene, thioether, ester, silylether or tetrylene). The most common synthetic method has been the oxidative addition of the Si-H bond to the metal center assisted by the coordination of L. The metal silicon bond distances in TM-(κ2-L,Si) complexes are in the range of metal-silyl bond distances. TM-(κ2-L,Si) complexes have proven to be effective catalysts for hydrosilylation and/or hydrogenation of unsaturated molecules among other processes.

X-type silyl ligands for transition-metal catalysis

Given the critical importance of novel ligand development for transition-metal (TM) catalysis, as well as the resurgence of the field of organosilicon chemistry and silyl ligands, to summarize the topic of X-type silyl ligands for TM catalysis is highly attractive and timely. This review particularly emphasizes the unique σ-donating characteristics and trans-effects of silyl ligands, highlighting their crucial roles in enhancing the reactivity and selectivity of various catalytic reactions, including small molecule activation, Kumada cross-coupling, hydrofunctionalization, C-H functionalization, and dehydrogenative Si-O coupling reactions. Additionally, future developments in this field are also provided, which would inspire new insights and applications in catalytic synthetic chemistry.

Catalytic activation of remote alkenes through silyl-rhodium(III) complexes

The tandem isomerization-hydrosilylation reaction is a highly valuable process able to transform mixtures of internal olefins into linear silanes. Unsaturated and cationic hydrido-silyl-Rh(III) complexes have proven to be effective catalysts for this reaction. Herein, three silicon-based bidentate ligands, 8-(dimethylsilyl)quinoline (L1), 8-(dimethylsilyl)-2-methylquinoline (L2) and 4-(dimethylsilyl)-9-phenylacridine (L3), have been used to synthesize three neutral [RhCl(H)(L)PPh₃] (1-L1, 1-L2 and 1-L3) and three cationic [Rh(H)(L)(PPh₃)₂][BAr^F₄] (2-L1, 2-L2 and 2-L3) Rh(III) complexes. Among the neutral compounds, 1-L2 could be characterized in the solid state by X-ray diffraction showing a distorted trigonal bipyramidal structure. Neutral complexes (1-L1, 1-L2 and 1-L3) failed to catalyze the hydrosilylation of olefins. On the other hand, the cationic compound 2-L2 was also characterized by X-ray diffraction showing a square pyramidal structure. The unsaturated and cationic Rh(III) complexes 2-L1, 2-L2 and 2-L3 showed significant catalytic activity in the hydrosilylation of remote alkenes, with the most sterically hindered (2-L2) being the most active one.

Remote Site-Selective Asymmetric Protoboration of Unactivated Alkenes Enabled by Bimetallic Relay Catalysis

A remote C(sp³ )-H bond asymmetric borylation of unactivated alkenes was achieved by bimetallic relay catalysis. The reaction proceeded through reversible and consecutive β-H elimination/olefin insertion promoted by CoH species generated in situ, followed by copper-catalyzed asymmetric protoboration. The use of this synergistic Co/Cu catalysis protocol allowed the enantioselective protoboration of various unactivated terminal alkenes and internal alkenes, as well as an unrefined mixture of olefin isomers, at the distal less-reactive β-position to a functional group, leading to chiral organoboronates.

14-Electron Rh and Ir silylphosphine complexes and their catalytic activity in alkene functionalization with hydrosilanes

Herein we report an experimental and computational study of a family of four coordinated 14-electron complexes of Rh(iii) devoid of agostic interactions. The complexes [X-Rh(κ³(P,Si,Si)PhP(o-C₆H₄CH₂SiⁱPr₂)₂], where X = Cl (Rh-1), Br (Rh-2), I (Rh-3), OTf (Rh-4), Cl·GaCl₃ (Rh-5); derive from a bis(silyl)-o-tolylphosphine with isopropyl substituents on the Si atoms. All five complexes display a sawhorse geometry around Rh and exhibit similar spectroscopic and structural properties. The catalytic activity of these complexes and [Cl-Ir(κ³(P,Si,Si)PhP(o-C₆H₄CH₂SiⁱPr₂)₂], Ir-1, in styrene and aliphatic alkene functionalizations with hydrosilanes is disclosed. We show that Rh-1 catalyzes effectively the dehydrogenative silylation of styrene with Et₃SiH in toluene while it leads to hydrosilylation products in acetonitrile. Rh-1 is an excellent catalyst in the sequential isomerization/hydrosilylation of terminal and remote aliphatic alkenes with Et₃SiH including hexene isomers, leading efficiently and selectively to the terminal anti-Markonikov hydrosilylation product in all cases. With aliphatic alkenes, no hydrogenation products are observed. Conversely, catalysis of the same hexene isomers by Ir-1 renders allyl silanes, the tandem isomerization/dehydrogenative silylation products. A mechanistic proposal is made to explain the catalysis with these M(iii) complexes.
