Mineralization of Calcium Carbonate Induced by Egg Substrate and an Electric Field

CO2 Sequestration in the Production of Portland Cement Mortars with Calcium Carbonate Additions

The paper presents the obtention and characterization of Portland cement mortars with limestone filler and nano-calcite additions. The nano-calcite was obtained by the injection of CO₂ in a nano-Ca(OH)₂ suspension. The resulted nano-CaCO₃ presents different morphologies, i.e., polyhedral and needle like crystals, depending on the initial Ca(OH)₂ concentration of the suspension. The formation of calcium carbonate in suspensions was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), complex thermal analysis (DTA-TG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM and HRTEM). This demonstrates the viability of this method to successfully sequestrate CO₂ in cement-based materials. The use of this type of nano-CaCO₃ in mortar formulations based on PC does not adversely modify the initial and final setting time of cements; for all studied pastes, the setting time decreases with increase of calcium carbonate content (irrespective of the particle size). Specific hydrated phases formed by Portland cement hydration were observed in all mortars, with limestone filler additions or nano-CaCO₃, irrespective of curing time. The hardened mortars with calcium carbonate additions (in adequate amounts) can reach the same mechanical strengths as reference (Portland cement mortar). The addition of nano-CaCO₃ in the raw mix increases the mechanical strengths, especially at shorter hardening periods (3 days).

Ultrasonic-assisted eggshell extract-mediated polymorphic transformation of calcium carbonate

This study aimed to evaluate the combined effects of eggshell extract and ultrasonic irradiation on the polymorphic transformation of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃). In this context, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, AFM, TGA-FTIR, BET, and zeta potential analysis were used to identify and characterize the different polymorphs of CaCO₃ obtained in the absence and presence of eggshell extract in the media with and without ultrasonic irradiation. The morphology and polymorphic nature of the CaCO₃ crystals were observed to change, which indicated that the eggshell extract and ultrasonication influenced the structure and crystallization of CaCO₃. The structural analysis results indicated that the addition of eggshell extract to the media resulted in the full transformation of calcite to the vaterite polymorph. The results also showed that ultrasonic irradiation had a more significant influence on the BET specific surface area of the crystals compared to the eggshell extract media. Furthermore, a Box-Behnken design with response surface methodology was employed to determine the optimal operating conditions for CaCO₃ crystallization. The effects of stirring rate, extract concentration, and ultrasonic power on the BET surface area were investigated. The results show that the data sufficiently fit the second-order polynomial model. Understanding the eggshell extract-mediated polymorphic transformation with ultrasonic irradiation obtained in this study makes it possible to control the polymorphic formation and modify the product characteristics.

Real-Time Observation of CaCO3 Mineralization in Highly Supersaturated Graphene Liquid Cells

The mineralization dynamics of calcium carbonate is investigated under highly supersaturated conditions using graphene liquid cell transmission electron microscopy. We demonstrate that the mineralization process has three steps: nucleation, diffusion-limited growth, and Ostwald ripening/coalescence. In addition, we show that the polymorphs precipitate in a specific order, from metastable aragonite to stable calcite, thus proving Ostwald's rule of stages. In highly supersaturated solutions, the aragonite phase crystallizes in a stable manner, in addition to the calcite phase.
