Oil|Water Interfacial Phosphate Transfer Facilitated by Boronic Acid: Observation of Unusually Fast Oil|Water Lateral Charge Transport

Anion sensing properties of electrospun nanofibers incorporating a thiourea-based chromoionophore in methanol

To sense hydrophilic anions in protic solvents, we fabricated polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) nanofibers incorporating 4-nitrophenyl azo thiourea polymer as a chromoionophore. When methanol solutions containing anions contacted the PMMA nanofiber, a bathochromic shift from 386 nm was observed in the absorption maximum of the chromoionophore. This spectral change is due to hydrogen bond formation between the urea moiety of the thiourea-based polymer and anions penetrating the nanofiber. This spectral change was not observed in PMMA film incorporating the same anion sensor, and the difference is attributed to the much larger specific surface area of the nanofiber compared to the film. As a result, many anions could react with the anion-sensing polymers in the nanofiber and induce a large spectral response.

Voltammetric monitoring of a solid-liquid phase transition in N,N,N′,N′-tetraoctyl-2,6-diamino-9,10-anthraquinone (TODAQ)

Exploratory experiments on effects from a phase transition are reported for a low-melting microcrystalline anthraquinone (N,N,N′,N′-tetraoctyl-2,6-diamino-9,10-anthraquinone or TODAQ). Data for the solid-liquid phase transition are obtained by differential scanning calorimetry and then compared to data obtained by voltammetry. In preliminary electrochemical measurements, microcrystal deposits on a basal plane pyrolytic graphite electrode are shown to undergo a solid-state 2-electron 2-proton reduction in contact to aqueous 0.1 M HClO4 with a midpoint potential Emid,solid = − 0.24 V vs. SCE. The reduction mechanism is proposed to be limited mainly by the triple phase boundary line and some transport of TODAQ molecules towards the electrode surface for both solid and melt. A change in the apparent activation energy for this reduction is observed at 69 °C, leading to an enhanced increase in reduction current with midpoint potential Emid,liquid = − 0.36 V vs. SCE. A change of TODAQ transport along the crystal surface for solid microcrystalline material (for the solid) to diffusion within molten microdroplets (for the liquid) is proposed. Upon cooling, a transition at 60 °C back to a higher apparent activation energy is seen consistent with re-solidification of the molten phase at the electrode surface. Differential scanning calorimetry data for solid TODAQ dry and for TODAQ in contact to aqueous 0.1 M HClO4 confirm these transitions.

Functionalized Quinoxaline for Chromogenic and Fluorogenic Anion Sensing

This Review article provides a comprehensive analysis of recent examples reported in the field of quinoxaline-based chromogenic and fluorogenic chemosensors for inorganic anions such as fluoride, cyanide, acetate, and phosphate, as well as their utility in biomolecular science. It commences with a discussion of the various structural motifs such as quinoxaline-based oligopyrroles, polymers, sulfonamides, cationic receptors, and miscellaneous receptors bearing mixed recognition sites in the same receptor. Advances are discussed in depth, where the focus of this review is to tackle mainly solution state anion sensing utilizing quinoxaline-based receptors using different spectroscopic techniques with reference to anion selectivity by colorimetric and fluorescence response. The various examples discussed in this Review illustrate how the integration of anion binding elements with the quinoxaline chromophore could result in anion responsive chemosensors. Over the years, it has been observed that structural modification of the quinoxaline moiety with different sets of signaling unit and recognition sites has resulted in a few anion specific chemosensors.

Fluorescence Sensing with Cellulose-Based Materials

Cellulose-based materials functionalized with fluorescence sensors are highly topical and are employed in many areas of functional materials, including the sensing of heavy-metal ions and anions as well as being widely used as chemical sensors and tools for environmental applications. In this Review, we cover recent progress in the development of cellulose-based fluorescence sensors as parts of membranes and nanoscale materials for the detection of biological analytes. We believe that this Review will be of interest to chemists, chemical engineers, and biochemists in the sensor community as well as researchers working with biological material systems.

Self and directed assembly: people and molecules

Self-assembly and directed-assembly are two very important aspects of supramolecular chemistry. As a young postgraduate student working in Canada with Tom Fyles my introduction to Supramolecular Chemistry was through the self-assembly of phospholipid membranes to form vesicles for which we were developing unimolecular and self-assembling transporter molecules. The next stage of my development as a scientist was in Japan with Seiji Shinkai where in a “Eureka” moment, the boronic acid templating unit (directed-assembly) of Wulff was combined with photoinduced electron transfer systems pioneered by De Silva. The result was a turn-on fluorescence sensor for saccharides; this simple result has continued to fuel my research to the present day. Throughout my career as well as assembling molecules, I have enjoyed bringing together researchers in order to develop collaborative networks. This is where molecules meet people resulting in assemblies worth more than the individual “molecule” or “researcher”. My role in developing networks with Japan was rewarded by the award of a Daiwa-Adrian Prize in 2013 and I was recently rewarded for developing networks with China with an Inaugural CASE Prize in 2015.

Ferrocene-Boronic Acid-Fructose Binding Based on Dual-Plate Generator-Collector Voltammetry and Square-Wave Voltammetry

The interaction of ferrocene‐boronic acid with fructose is investigated in aqueous 0.1 m phosphate buffer at pH 7, 8 and 9. Two voltammetric methods, based on 1) a dual‐plate generator–collector micro‐trench electrode (steady state) and 2) a square‐wave voltammetry (transient) method, are applied and compared in terms of mechanistic resolution. A combination of experimental data is employed to obtain new insights into the binding rates and the cumulative binding constants for both the reduced ferrocene‐boronic acid (pH dependent and weakly binding) and for the oxidised ferrocene‐boronic acid (pH independent and strongly binding).
