Synthesis and Characterization of MOF-Derived Structures: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives

Due to their facile tunability, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are employed as precursors and templates to construct advanced functional materials with unique and desired chemical, physical, mechanical, and morphological properties. By tuning MOF precursor composition and manipulating conversion processes, various MOF-derived materials commonly known as MOF derivatives can be constructed. The possibility of controlled and predictable properties makes MOF derivatives a preferred choice for numerous advanced technological applications. The innovative synthetic designs besides the plethora of interdisciplinary characterization approaches applicable to MOF derivatives provide the opportunity to perform a myriad of experiments to explore the performance and offer key insight to develop the next generation of advanced materials. Though there are many published works of literature describing various synthesis and characterization techniques of MOF derivatives, it is still not clear how the synthesis mechanism works and what are the best techniques to characterize these materials to probe their properties accurately. In this review, the recent development in synthesis techniques and mechanisms for a variety of MOF derivates such as MOF-derived metal oxides, porous carbon, composites/hybrids, and sulfides is summarized. Furthermore, the details of characterization techniques and fundamental working principles are summarized to probe the structural, mechanical, physiochemical, electrochemical, and electronic properties of MOF and MOF derivatives. The future trends and some remaining challenges in the synthesis and characterization of MOF derivatives are also discussed.

MOF Derivatives with Gradient Structure Anchored on Carbon Foam for High-Performance Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

The impedance matching and high loss capabilities of composites with homogeneous distribution are limited owing to high addition and lack of structural design. Developing composites with heterogeneous distribution can achieve strong and wide electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption. However, challenges such as complex design and unclear absorption mechanisms still exist. Herein, a novel composite with a heterogeneous distribution gradient is successfully constructed via MOF derivatives Co@ nitrogen-doped carbon (Co@NC) anchored on carbon foam (CF) matrix (MDCF). Notably, the concentration of MOF can easily control the gradient structure. In particular, the morphologies of MOF derivatives on the surface of CF undergo a transition from the collapse of the inner layer to the integrity of the outer layer, accompanied by a continuous reduction in the size of Co nanoparticles. Correspondingly, enhanced interface polarization from the core-shell of Co@NC and good impedance matching of MDCF can be obtained. The optimized MDCF exhibits the minimum reflection loss of -68.18 dB at 2.01 mm and effective absorption bandwidth covering the entire X-band. Moreover, MDCF exhibits lightweight characteristics, excellent compressive strength, and low radar cross-section reduction. This work highlights the immense potential of composites with heterogeneous distribution for achieving high-performance EM wave absorption.

Low-dimensional transition metal sulfide-based electrocatalysts for water electrolysis: overview and perspectives

Hydrogen prepared by electrocatalytic decomposition of water ("green hydrogen") has the advantages of high energy density and being clean and pollution-free, which is an important energy carrier to face the problems of the energy crisis and environmental pollution. However, the most used commercial electrocatalysts are based on expensive and scarce precious metals and their alloy materials, which seriously restricts the large-scale industrial application of hydrogen energy. The development of efficient non-precious metal electrocatalysts is the key to achieving the sustainable development of the hydrogen energy industry. Transition metal sulfides (TMS) have become popular non-precious metal electrocatalysts with great application potential due to their large specific surface area, unique electronic structure, and rich regulatory strategies. To further improve their catalytic activities for practical application, many methods have been tried in recent years, including control of morphology and crystal plane, metal/nonmetal doping, vacancy engineering, building of self-supporting electrocatalysts, interface engineering, etc. In this review, we introduce firstly the common types of TMS and their preparation. Additionally, we summarize the recent developments of the many different strategies mentioned above for efficient water electrolysis applications. Furthermore, the rationales behind their enhanced electrochemical performances are discussed. Lastly, the challenges and future perspectives are briefly discussed for TMS-based water dissociation catalysts.

Brønsted Acid-Functionalized Ionic Co(II) Framework: A Tailored Vessel for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution and Size-Exclusive Optical Speciation of Biothiols

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) not only combine globally demanded renewable energy generation and environmental remediation onto a single platform but also rationalize structure-performance synergies to devise smarter materials with remarkable performance. The robust and non-interpenetrated cationic MOF exemplifies a unique bifunctional scaffold for the efficient electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and ultrasensitive monitoring of biohazards. The microporous framework containing Brønsted acid-functionalized [Co₂(μ₂-OH)(CO₂)₂] secondary building units (SBUs) exhibits remarkable OER performance in 1 M KOH, requiring 410 mV overpotential to obtain 10 mA cm^-2 anodic current density, and a low Tafel slope of 55 mV/dec with 93.1% Faradaic efficiency. Apart from the high turnover frequency and electrochemically assessable surface area, steady OER performance over 500 cycles under potentiodynamic and potentiostatic conditions result in long-term catalyst durability. The highly emissive attribute from nitrogen-rich fluorescent struts benefits the MOF in recyclable and selective fluoro-detection of three biothiols (l-cysteine, homocysteine, and glutathione) in water with a fast response time. In addition to colorimetric monitoring in the solid and solution phases, control experiments validate size-exclusive biothiol speciation through molecular-dimension-mediated pore diffusion. The role of SBUs in the OER mechanism is detailed from density functional theory-derived free energy analysis, which also validates the importance of accessible N-sites in sensing via portraying framework-analyte supramolecular interactions.

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived plate-shaped CoS1.097 nanoparticles for an improved hydrogen evolution reaction

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived transition metal sulfides are viewed as reliable, cost-effective, and alternative hydrogen evolution reaction (HER)-efficient electrocatalysts. They have been used to replace platinum (and their alloys) for production of renewable energy carriers such as hydrogen. Progress towards development of non-precious transition-metal sulfides through different synthetic routes to obtain unique morphological nanostructures with enhanced HER activity is challenging. We introduced a transition-metal sulfide, cobalt sulfide (CoS_1.097), derived from a cobalt MOF [Co-BPY-DDE] by following facile, one-step solvothermal sulfurization. By varying the sulfurization temperature (from 140 °C to 180 °C) during the solvothermal method, three cobalt-sulfide products were obtained: CoS_1.097-140, CoS_1.097-160, and CoS_1.097-180, respectively. Temperature variation had a vital role in optimizing the HER activity of the electrocatalyst. Besides, notable plate-shaped cobalt sulfide nanoparticles (CoS_1.097-160) required overpotential of 163 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 with a low Tafel slope of 53 mV dec^-1, thereby demonstrating faster reaction kinetics during the evolution of molecular hydrogen. Furthermore, 25 h of long-term stability of the electrocatalyst reflected its practical applicability in acidic media. CoS_1.097-160 had uniform plate-shaped morphology and large electrochemical active surface area, which contributed to enhanced electrochemical performance through water electrolysis.

Cobalt-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Derivatives for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Hydrogen has been considered as a promising alternative energy to replace fossil fuels. Electrochemical water splitting, as a green and renewable method for hydrogen production, has been drawing more and more attention. In order to improve hydrogen production efficiency and lower energy consumption, efficient catalysts are required to drive the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Cobalt (Co)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials with tunable structure, adjustable pores and large specific surface areas, which has attracted great attention in the field of electrocatalysis. In this review, we focus on the recent progress of Co-based metal-organic frameworks and their derivatives, including their compositions, morphologies, architectures and electrochemical performances. The challenges and development prospects related to Co-based metal-organic frameworks as HER electrocatalysts are also discussed, which might provide some insight in electrochemical water splitting for future development.

Ti-Mesh supported porous CoS2 nanosheet self-interconnected networks with high oxidation states for efficient hydrogen production via urea electrolysis

The urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is an ideal alternative to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) towards energy efficient hydrogen production. However developing Earth-abundant electrocatalysts for urea oxidation and hydrogen generation still remains a big challenge. Herein, porous CoS2 nanosheet self-interconnected networks with high oxidation states located on a Ti-mesh (P-CoS2/Ti) are synthesized and can act as a high activity catalyst for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). In this literature, we report a very interesting phenomenon that cobalt hydroxide with different chemical compositions and crystal structures can be synthesized by adjusting the concentration of NaOH during the etching process. Moreover, porous CoS2 nanosheets with different crystallite sizes can be synthesized by adjusting the sulfuration temperature. P-CoS2/Ti presents outstanding catalytic performance with an overpotential of 91 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for the HER, and it gives an anode potential of 1.243 V vs. RHE at 10 mA cm-2 for the UOR. A two-electrode electrolyser is used to validate the catalyst performance, and the P-CoS2/Ti||P-CoS2/Ti electrode is capable of producing a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a cell potential of only 1.375 V, demonstrating its potential feasibility in the practical application of efficient hydrogen production.

MOF derived ZnO/C nanocomposite with enhanced adsorption capacity and photocatalytic performance under sunlight

In this work, ZnO/C nanocomposites were obtained by calcining the prepared metal-organic framework precursor under nitrogen. The crystallinity and structure of the prepared products were characterized by XRD, FTIR, XPS and EDS. The morphologies of samples before and after calcination were observed by FESEM. The photocatalytic performances of ZnO/C were evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under sunlight irradiation. Combined with DRS, PL and BET, the influence of calcination temperature on photocatalytic activities of as-synthesized zinc oxide were discussed as compared with commercial zinc oxide. The results indicated that ZnO/C composite obtained at 600 °C and 700 °C exhibited the superior adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity. The possible photocatalytic mechanism of ZnO/C nanocomposite for degradation of MB under sunlight irradiation was proposed.

Nitrogen and Sulfur Co-Doped Mesoporous Carbon Embedded with Co9 S8 Nanoparticles: Efficient Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution

Co₉ S₈ embedded, N,S co-doepd mesoporous carbon materials were synthesized by adopting CoCl₂ as the molten salt. In details, CoCl₂ and glucose were used as cobalt and carbon precursors, respectively, and thiourea was utilized as sulfur and nitrogen precursors. This synthetic process involved three steps, including hand-milling, carbonation, and acid leaching. The results of characterization exhibited that the final products had mesoporous structures, which also showed high nitrogen and sulfur contents. Moreover, the Co₉ S₈ nanoparticles dispersed evenly in the carbonaceous matrix. Furthermore, the calcining temperature could affect the porosities of the final products and the contents of the heteroatoms, which could further determine the electrocatalytic activities of these catalysts. When used as the electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction, the optimal catalyst, GTCo900, exhibited superior catalytic activities under acidic condition. The overpotential is 62 mV to afford a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 . Moreover, it could also reveal excellent stability for 12 h.

Porous TiO2/Co9S8 core-branch nanosheet arrays with high electrocatalytic activity for a hydrogen evolution reaction

Exploring new non-noble metallic catalysts with highly efficient and stable catalytic performance toward a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a major requirement in the field of electrochemical water splitting. In this study, we report a facile strategy to synthesize a three-dimensional (3D) porous TiO₂/Co₉S₈ core-branch nanosheet arrays on Ni foam with superior HER catalytic activity. The hierarchically 3D porous architecture not only provides rich active sites, but also enables fast electron transport and easy electrolyte permeation. Consequently, the TiO₂/Co₉S₈ core-branch nanosheet arrays achieve a remarkably low overpotential of 150 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, small Tafel slope of 71 mV Dec^-1 and outstanding long-term stability for the HER reaction. The elaborate design should provide a new strategy to controllably synthesize porous and rational nanostructured materials as a prominent electrocatalyst for water splitting applications.

A N-doped graphene–cobalt nickel sulfide aerogel as a sulfur host for lithium–sulfur batteries

Herein, three-dimensional (3D) N-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) nanosheets were decorated with a uniform distribution of Co–Ni–S (CNS) nanoparticles to form the CNS/N-rGO composite as a sulfur host material for lithium–sulfur batteries. The CNS nanoparticles and N in CNS/N-rGO strongly interact with polysulfides, whereas graphene, as a conductive network, can improve its electrical conductivity. A CNS/N-rGO/sulfur composite cathode was prepared via the sulfur melting diffusion method. The electrochemical study showed that the CNS/N-rGO/sulfur cathode delivered an initial discharge capacity of 1430 mA h g⁻¹ at a current density of 0.1C. Moreover, it retained a specific capacity of 685 mA h g⁻¹ after 300 cycles at 0.5C with a coulombic efficiency of 98%, which was better than that of commercial rGO. This composite was used as a sulfur cathode for a lithium–sulfur battery, exhibiting excellent rate capability and remarkable performance in terms of long cycling stability.
