Endowing the Operability of Supercapacitors at High Temperatures by Regulating the Solvation Structure in Dilute Hybrid Electrolyte with Trimethyl Phosphate Cosolvent

The redox stabilities of different oxygen donor solvents (C═O, P═O and S═O) and lithium salt anions for supercapacitors (SCs) electrolytes have been compared by calculating the frontier molecular orbital energy. Among six lithium difluoro(oxalate)borate (LiDFOB)-based mono-solvent electrolytes, the dilute LiDFOB-1,4-butyrolactone (GBL) electrolyte exhibits the highest operating voltage but suffers from electrolyte breakdown at elevated temperatures. Trimethyl phosphate (TMP) exhibits the highest redox stability and a strongly negative electrostatic potential (ESP), making it suitable for promoting the dissolution of LiDFOB as expected. Therefore, TMP is selected as a co-solvent into LiDFOB-GBL electrolyte to regulate Li+ solvation structure and improve the operability of electrolytes at high temperatures. The electrochemical stable potential window (ESPW) of 0.5 m LiDFOB-G/T(5/5) hybrid electrolyte can reach 5.230 V. The activated carbon (AC)-based symmetric SC using 0.5 m LiDFOB-G/T(5/5) hybrid electrolyte achieves a high energy density of 54.2 Wh kg-1 at 1.35 kW kg-1 and the capacitance retention reaches 89.2% after 10 000 cycles. The operating voltage of SC can be maintained above 2 V when the temperature rises to 60 °C.

Anti-Corrosion Performance of Polyaniline Coated Basalt Rockwool Wastes/Epoxy Resin Coatings

Basalt rockwool wastes with large output, which are toxic and require expensive environmental treatment, are produced during the production of rock wool. Hence, it is urgent to find an effective method to reuse these materials. In this study, polyaniline (PANI)-coated basalt rockwool wastes (BRWs) were prepared as fillers to serve in coatings for the anticorrosion study. Results show that the PANI-coated BRW (PANI@BRW) had enhanced dispersion stability in several conventional solvents and improved the anticorrosion performance of the epoxy resin coating. A high protection efficiency of 97.7% could be obtained from the coating with 5% fillers after immersion for 30 days. This study not only provides a promising method of solving the issues caused by BRW, but also turns these wastes into valuable substances.

Artificial Cathode-Electrolyte Interphase towards High-Performance Lithium-ion Batteries: A Case Study of β-AgVO3

Silver vanadates (SVOs) have been widely investigated as cathode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, similar to most vanadium-based materials, SVOs suffer from structural collapse/amorphization and vanadium dissolution from the electrode into the electrolyte during the Li insertion and extraction process, causing poor electrochemical performance in LIBs. We employ ultrathin Al₂O₃ coatings to modify β-AgVO₃ (as a typical example of SVOs) by an atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. The galvanostatic charge-discharge test reveals that ALD Al₂O₃ coatings with different thicknesses greatly affected the cycling performance. Especially, the β-AgVO₃ electrode with ~10 nm Al₂O₃ coating (100 ALD cycles) exhibits a high specific capacity of 271 mAh g⁻¹, and capacity retention is 31%, much higher than the uncoated one of 10% after 100 cycles. The Coulombic efficiency is improved from 89.8% for the pristine β-AgVO₃ to 98.2% for Al₂O₃-coated one. Postcycling analysis by cyclic voltammetry (CV), cyclic voltammetry (EIS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) disclose that 10-nm Al₂O₃ coating greatly reduces cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) resistance and the charge transfer resistance in the β-AgVO₃ electrode. Al₂O₃ coating by the ALD method is a promising technique to construct artificial CEI and stabilize the structure of SVOs, providing new insights for vanadium-based electrodes and their energy storage devices.

Reducing the resistance for the use of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis in materials chemistry

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a highly applicable electrochemical, analytical, and non-invasive technique for materials characterization, which allows the user to evaluate the impact, efficiency, and magnitude of different components within an electrical circuit at a higher resolution than other common electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry (CV) or chronoamperometry. EIS can be used to study mechanisms of surface reactions, evaluate kinetics and mass transport, and study the level of corrosion on conductive materials, just to name a few. Therefore, this review demonstrates the scope of physical properties of the materials that can be studied using EIS, such as for characterization of supercapacitors, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), conductive coatings, sensors, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), and other materials. This guide was created to support beginner and intermediate level researchers in EIS studies to inspire a wider application of this technique for materials characterization. In this work, we provide a summary of the essential background theory of EIS, including experimental design, signal responses, and instrumentation. Then, we discuss the main graphical representations for EIS data, including a scope of the foundation principles of Nyquist, Bode phase angle, Bode magnitude, capacitance and Randles plots, followed by detailed step-by-step explanations of the corresponding calculations that evolve from these graphs and direct examples from the literature highlighting practical applications of EIS for characterization of different types of materials. In addition, we discuss various applications of EIS technique for materials research.

This manuscript highlights a beginner-to-intermediate level scope of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which is an indispensable, non-destructive electrochemical technique that can be applied for materials characterization.
