A MOF-derived flower-shaped CeCo-oxide as a multifunctional material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors

Precursor method is a well-known technology for preparing certain functional materials. In this work, a novel 3d-4f bimetallic organic framework, denoted as 45MCeCo (45 M representing 4,5-imidazole dicarboxylic acid), was successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal technique. The compound thus obtained has the molecular formula of C10H11CeCoN4O12. By meticulously controlling the amounts of the experimental materials, it was feasible to prepare flower-like crystals possessing identical single crystal structures and significantly larger specific surface areas. As a precursor for electrode materials, this structure underwent calcination at different temperatures to prepare Co3O4/CeO2 composites with in situ composite heterostructures. Post-electrochemical tests revealed that CeO2 remains unreactive across all potentials, thereby contributing to the stabilization of the electrode material structure. In contrast, Co3O4 participated in redox reactions to provide a specific capacity to the sample. In addition, when comparing the performance of the electrode material under different calcination conditions, it became evident that the material exhibited optimal electrochemical performance when subjected to a temperature of 700 °C for 2 h.

NH2-MIL-125-Derived N-Doped TiO2@C Visible Light Catalyst for Wastewater Treatment

The utilization of titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a photocatalyst for the treatment of wastewater has attracted significant attention in the environmental field. Herein, we prepared an NH2-MIL-125-derived N-doped TiO2@C Visible Light Catalyst through an in situ calcination method. The nitrogen element in the organic connector was released through calcination, simultaneously doping into the sample, thereby enhancing its spectral response to cover the visible region. The as-prepared N-doped TiO2@C catalyst exhibited a preserved cage structure even after calcination, thereby alleviating the optical shielding effect and further augmenting its photocatalytic performance by increasing the reaction sites between the catalyst and pollutants. The calcination time of the N-doped TiO2@C-450 °C catalyst was optimized to achieve a balance between the TiO2 content and nitrogen doping level, ensuring efficient degradation rates for basic fuchsin (99.7%), Rhodamine B (89.9%) and tetracycline hydrochloride (93%) within 90 min. Thus, this study presents a feasible strategy for the efficient degradation of pollutants under visible light.

A Review of Cobalt-Containing Nanomaterials, Carbon Nanomaterials and Their Composites in Preparation Methods and Application

With the increasing demand for sustainable and green energy, electric energy storage technologies have received enough attention and extensive research. Among them, Li-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used because of their excellent performance, but in practical applications, the electrochemical performance of electrode materials is not satisfactory. Carbon-based materials with high chemical stability, strong conductivity, high specific surface area, and good capacity retention are traditional anode materials in electrochemical energy storage devices, while cobalt-based nano-materials have been widely used in LIBs anodes because of their high theoretical specific capacity. This paper gives a systematic summary of the state of research of cobalt-containing nanomaterials, carbon nanomaterials, and their composites in LIBs anodes. Moreover, the preparation methods of electrode materials and measures to improve electrochemical performance are also summarized. The electrochemical performance of anode materials can be significantly improved by compounding carbon nanomaterials with cobalt nanomaterials. Composite materials have better electrical conductivity, as well as higher cycle ability and reversibility than single materials, and the synergistic effect between them can explain this phenomenon. In addition, the electrochemical performance of materials can be significantly improved by adjusting the microstructure of materials (especially preparing them into porous structures). Among the different microscopic morphologies of materials, porous structure can provide more positions for chimerism of lithium ions, shorten the diffusion distance between electrons and ions, and thus promote the transfer of lithium ions and the diffusion of electrolytes.

Process of metal-organic framework (MOF)/covalent-organic framework (COF) hybrids-based derivatives and their applications on energy transfer and storage

The fossil-fuel shortage and severe environmental issues have posed ever-increasing demands on clean and renewable energy sources, for which the exploration of electrocatalysts has been a big challenge toward energy transfer and storage. Some indispensable features of electrocatalysts, such as large surface area, controlled structure, high porosity, and effective functionalization, have been proved to be critical for the improvement of electrocatalytic activities. Recently, the rapid expansion of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), and porous-organic polymers has provided extensive opportunities for the development of various electrocatalysts. Moreover, combining diverse descriptions of porous-organic frameworks (such as MOFs and COFs) can generate amazing and fantastic properties, affording the formed MOF/COF (including core-shell MOF@MOF and MOF@COF and layer-on-layer MOF-on-MOF or COF-on-MOF) heterostructures wide applications in diverse fields, especially in clean energy and energy transfer. To further boosts electronic conductivity, catalytic performances, and energy storage abilities, these MOF/COF hybrid materials have been widely utilized as versatile precursors for the manufacture of transition metal catalysts embedded within mesoporous carbon nitrides (M@CN_x) and porous carbon nitride frameworks (CN_x) via a facile pyrolysis process. Given that these M@CN_x and CN_x hybrids are composed of abundant catalytic centers, rich functionalities, and large specific surface areas, vast applications in energy transfer and energy storage fields can be realized. In this mini-review, we summarize the preparation strategies of MOF/COF-based hybrids, as well as their derivatives, nanostructure formation mechanism of M@CN_x and CN_x hybrids from MOF/COF-based hybrid materials, and their applications as catalysts for driving diverse reactions and electrode materials for energy storage. Further, current challenges and future prospects of applying these derivatives into energy conversion and storage devices are also discussed.

Rational Design and Growth of MOF-on-MOF Heterostructures

Multiporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a subclass of highly crystalline inorganic-organic materials, which are endowed with high surface areas, tunable pores, and fascinating nanostructures. Heterostructured MOF-on-MOF composites are recently becoming a research hotspot in the field of chemistry and materials science, which focus on the assembly of two or more different homogeneous or heterogeneous MOFs with various structures and morphologies. Compared with one single MOF, the dual MOF-on-MOF composites exhibit unprecedented tunability, hierarchical nanostructure, synergistic effect, and enhanced performance. Due to the difference of inorganic metals and organic ligands, the lattice parameters in a, b, and c directions in the single crystal cells could bring about subtle or large structural difference. It will result in the composite material with distinct growth methods to obtain secondary MOF grown from the initial MOF. In this review, the authors wish to mainly outline the latest synthetic strategies of heterostructured MOF-on-MOFs and their derivatives, including ordered epitaxial growth, random epitaxial growth, etc., which show the tutorial guidelines for the further development of various MOF-on-MOFs.

Metal-Organic Framework-Derived ZnSe- and Co0.85Se-Filled Porous Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanocubes Interconnected by Reduced Graphene Oxide for Sodium-Ion Battery Anodes

Transition-metal selenides have been considered as one of the most promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity and excellent rate performance. However, rapid capacity decay and poor cycling stability limit their practical application as the anode for SIBs. Carbon coating is one of the most effective ways to solve the above problems, but the thickness and uniformity of the coating layer are difficult to control. Herein, we successfully synthesize metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived porous N-doped carbon nanocubes homogeneously filled with ZnSe and Co_0.85Se and interconnected by reduced graphene oxide (ZCS@NC@rGO). ZCS@NC@rGO with more active sites and the synergistic effect of the ZnSe and Co_0.85Se heterojunction can enhance the sodium storage performance. The porous carbon nanocubes effectively prevent the agglomeration of active particles, and the rGO acting as a carbon network can significantly buffer the inevitable volume changes. At the same time, carbon nanocubes and the rGO are interconnecting to form a conductive network to accelerate electron transfer. Based on the aforementioned advantages, the ZCS@NC@rGO electrode shows an excellent sodium storage performance. Our investigation opens up a new horizon for the rational design of transition-metal selenide anodes for SIBs with a unique structure.

Highly efficient Co3O4/CeO2 heterostructure as anode for lithium-ion batteries

Co₃O₄ has been extensively studied as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its high theoretical capacity. However, during the charging-discharging processes, the issues of large volume change and low electric conductivity arise, which significantly limit the practical applications of Co₃O₄. To solve these issues, a Co₃O₄/CeO₂ heterostructure derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) was designed and synthesized through one-step microwave synthesis. Benefiting from the mesoporous structure and presence of hetero-components, Co₃O₄/CeO₂ having the molar ratio of Co/Ce = 5:1 (denoted as 5Co₃O₄/CeO₂) exhibits high reversible capacity and excellent cycling stability when used as an anode material for LIBs. Specifically, compared to a single-phase Co₃O₄ anode, which shows a capacity of 538.6 mAh/g after 100 cycles, 5Co₃O₄/CeO₂ exhibits a higher capacity (1131.2 mAh/g at 100 mA/g). This study provides a novel strategy for using rare earth components to modify electrode materials.
