Abstract
Pentlandites are natural ores with structural properties comparable to that of [FeNi] hydrogenases. While this class of transition-metal sulfide materials - (Fe,Ni)9S8 - with a variable Fe : Ni ratio has been proven to be an active electrode material for the hydrogen evolution reaction, it is also discussed as electrocatalyst for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER), corresponding to the bottleneck of anion exchange membrane electrolyzers for green hydrogen production. Despite the experimental evidence for the use of (Fe,Ni)9S8 as an OER catalyst, a detailed investigation of the elementary reaction steps, including consideration of adsorbate coverages and limiting steps under anodic polarizing conditions, is still missing. We address this gap in the present manuscript by gaining atomistic insights into the OER on an Fe4.5Ni4.5S8(111) surface through density functional theory calculations combined with a descriptor-based analysis. We use this system to introduce best practices for modeling this rather complex material by pointing out hidden pitfalls that can arise when using the popular computational hydrogen electrode approach to describe electrocatalytic processes at the electrified solid/liquid interface for energy conversion and storage.

Abstract
Water splitting is an important approach to hydrogen production. But the efficiency of the process is always controlled by the oxygen evolution reaction process. In this study, a three-dimensional nickel-molybdenum binary nanoarray microstructure electrocatalyst is successfully synthesized. It is grown uniformly on Ni foam using a hydrothermal method. Attributed to their unique nanostructure and controllable nature, the Ni-Mo-based nanoarray samples show superior reactivity and durability in oxygen evolution reactions. The series of Ni-Mo-based electrocatalysts presents a competitive overpotential of 296 mV at 10 mA·cm-2 for an OER in 1.0 M KOH, corresponding with a low Tafel slope of 121 mV dec-1. The three-dimensional nanostructure has a large double-layer capacitance and plenty of channels for ion transfer, which demonstrates more active sites and improved charge transmission. This study provides a valuable reference for the development of non-precious catalysts for water splitting.

Abstract
Nickel-based catalysts are regarded as the most excellent urea oxidation reaction (UOR) catalysts in alkaline media. Whatever kind of nickel-based catalysts is utilized to catalyze UOR, it is widely believed that the in situ-formed Ni3+ moieties are the true active sites and the as-utilized nickel-based catalysts just serve as pre-catalysts. Digging the pre-catalyst effect on the activity of Ni3+ moieties helps to better design nickel-based catalysts. Herein, five different anions of OH-, CO32-, SiO32-, MoO42-, and WO42- were used to bond with Ni2+ to fabricate the pre-catalysts β-Ni(OH)2, Ni-CO3, Ni-SiO3, Ni-MoO4, and Ni-WO4. It is found that the true active sites of the five as-fabricated catalysts are the same in situ-formed Ni3+ moieties and the five as-fabricated catalysts demonstrate different UOR activity. Although the as-synthesized five catalysts just serve as the pre-catalysts, they determine the quantity of active sites and activity per active site, thus determining the catalytic activity of the catalysts. Among the five catalysts, the amorphous nickel tungstate exhibits the most superior activity per active site and can catalyze UOR to reach 158.10 mA·cm-2 at 1.6 V, exceeding the majority of catalysts. This work makes for a deeper understanding of the pre-catalyst effect on UOR activity and helps to better design nickel-based UOR catalysts.

Abstract
The pentlandite Fe5Ni4S8(abbreviated as FNS) is not efficient for water splitting because of its inferior performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This issue originates from the low activity and instability of FNS during the OER process but can be solved through appropriate doping. Herein, a P-doping strategy based on annealing in the presence of NaH2PO2as a phosphorus source upstream was employed on FNS to enhance its activity and stability toward OER. The results demonstrated fine-tuned electronic structures of Fe and Ni in FNS through P-doping, resulting in suppressed Fe leaching,improved electrical conductivity of FNS, and easier formation of NiOOH on the surface of the catalyst. In turn, these features enhanced the OER activity and stability. The optimal P-doped FNS catalyst FNSP-40 exhibited a 4-fold greater electrochemical surface area compared to that of FNS, accompanied by an overpotential of 235 mV at 10 mA cm-2. The optimized FNSP-40 catalyst was used as an anode, and platinum-decorated FNS was used as a cathode. This combination demonstrated an electrolysis performance with a cell voltage of 1.57 V, reaching a current density of 100 mA cm-2,which indicates efficient operation. The advantages of P-doping engineering were also verified in simulated seawater with enhanced OER performance. Overall, the proposed strategy looks promising for the fabrication of pentlandite-structured catalysts for efficient alkaline water and seawater oxidation.

Abstract
Although lots of nanomaterials modified anodes have been reported to improve the bacterial attachment and extracellular electron transfer (EET) in microbial fuel cells (MFCs), the lack of a three dimensional (3D) conductive and capacitive network severely limited MFCs performance. In this work, 3D conductive networks derived from mucor mycelia were grown on carbon cloth (CC), and capacitive FeMn phosphides/oxides were further anchored on these 3D networks by electrochemical deposition (denoted as FeMn/CMM@CC) to simultaneously address the above challenges. As a result, the multivalent metal active sites were evenly distributed on 3D conductive network, which favored the enrichment of exoelectrogens, mass transport and EET. Consequently, the as-prepared FeMn/CMM@CC anode displayed accumulated charge of 131.4C/m2, higher than bare CC. Meanwhile, FeMn/CMM@CC anode substantially promoted flavin excretion and the amounts of nano conduits. The abundance of Geobacter was 63 % on bare CC, and greatly increased to 83 % on FeMn/CMM@CC. MFCs equipped by FeMn/CMM@CC anode presented the power density of 3.06 W/m2 and coulombic efficiency (29.9 %), evidently higher than bare CC (1.29 W/m2, 7.3 %), and the daily chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal amount also increased to 92.6 mg/L/d. This work developed a facile method to optimize the abiotic-biotic interface by introducing 3D conductive and capacitive network, which was proved to be a promising strategy to modify macro-porous electrodes.

Abstract
In this work, Ag nanoparticles decorated with NiFe2O4/CuWO4 heterostructure were synthesized using the step-wise precipitation method. The influence of varying Ag loading on the NiFe2O4/CuWO4 heterostructure and its electrochemical OER performance was extensively studied in 1 M KOH electrolyte. The obtained LSV profile was analyzed to determine the overpotential, Tafel slope, and onset potential. The heterostructure with an optimal Ag loading of 5 wt% required the least overpotential (1.60 V vs. RHE) for generating a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with a lower Tafel slope of 44.5 mV dec-1, indicating its faster OER kinetics. Furthermore, the composite remained stable over a period of 24 hours with a minimum rise in the overpotential after the stability test. The enhanced OER performance of the as-prepared catalyst can be attributed to the presence of multiple metallic elements in the Ag-loaded NiFe2O4/CuWO4 composite, which created a diverse array of oxygen-vacant sites with varying reactivity, enhancing the charge-transfer kinetics; and thus contributing to the overall efficiency of OER. Therefore, optimizing the Ag concentration and engineering a microstructure represents an encouraging strategy for developing cost-effective catalysts for next-generation energy-conversion applications.

Electrodeposited Cobalt Nanosheets on Smooth Silver as a Bifunctional Catalyst for OER and ORR: In Situ Structural and Catalytic Characterization. Abstract
Developing earth-abundant, cost-effective, and active bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is key to boosting sustainable energy systems such as electrolyzers and lithium-air batteries. However, the performance of promising cobalt-based materials is impaired by the external effects of binders and carbon additives as well as inhomogeneous electrode fabrication. In this work, binder- and carbon-free flower-like Co-decorated Ag catalytic nanosheets were in situ-synthesized via a simple electrodeposition approach. The morphology, composition, and structure of Co/Ag before and after OER were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Co/Ag thin film electrodes with various Co contents exhibited a bifunctional activity toward ORR and OER due to a synergistic effect. XPS analysis suggested the formation of Co3O4 as the main active species for OER. In particular, Co (83%)/Ag surface revealed a 60 mV lower ORR overpotential than a pure Ag surface and even lower than drop-casted Co3O4 nanoparticles on Ag surface. Only 1.5% peroxide was generated, suggesting a four-electron transfer ORR. In addition, the OER onset potential on Co/Ag is 60 mV less than Co3O4. Tafel slopes of 71 and 75 mV dec-1 were obtained for ORR and OER, respectively. Importantly, the three-dimensional (3D) growth mechanism of a cobalt layer (∼1 nm) on a well-defined atomic smooth Ag surface is unraveled by in situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM). EC-STM suggests that Co prefers to nucleate at the step edges of Ag and grows in a 3D, forming nanoparticles, where the deposition/dissolution process of the Co adlayer on Ag is reversible. This investigation may provide insights into design strategies of efficient oxygen electrocatalysts.

Abstract
Electrosynthetic methods are crucial for a future sustainable transformation of the chemical industry. Being an integral part of many synthetic pathways, the electrification of hydrogenation reactions gained increasing interest in recent years. However, for the large-scale industrial application of electrochemical hydrogenations, low-resistance zero-gap electrolysers operating at high current densities and high substrate concentrations, ideally applying noble-metal-free catalyst systems, are required. Because of their conductivity, stability, and stoichiometric flexibility, transition metal sulfides of the pentlandite group have been thoroughly investigated as promising electrocatalysts for electrochemical applications but were not investigated for electrochemical hydrogenations of organic materials. An initial screening of a series of first row transition metal pentlandites revealed promising activity for the electrochemical hydrogenation of alkynols in water. The most active catalyst within the series was then incorporated into a zero-gap electrolyser enabling the hydrogenation of alkynols at current densities of up to 240 mA cm-2, Faraday efficiencies of up to 75%, and an alkene selectivity of up to 90%. In this scalable setup we demonstrate high stability of catalyst and electrode for at least 100 h. Altogether, we illustrate the successful integration of a sustainable catalyst into a scalable zero-gap electrolyser establishing electrosynthetic methods in an application-oriented manner.

Abstract
We report on synthesis of the heterotrimetallic pentlandite-type material Fe3Co3Ni3S8 (FCNS) in presence of suitable phosphorus-(FCNSP) and nitrogen-(FCNSN) donors for the overall electrochemical water splitting. Throughout the experiments, a preferential incorporation of N into the FCNS-lattice is observed whereas the addition of phosphorus generally leads to metal-phosphate-FCNS composites. The obtained FCNSP, FCNSN, and FCNSNP facilitate the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 100 mAcm−2 in 1.0M KOH with overpotentials of 479, 440, and 427 mV, respectively, outperforming the benchmark IrO2 (564 mV) and commercial Ni metal powder (>600 mV). Likewise, FCNSN and FCNSNP reveal an improved performance toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 0.5M H2SO4, outperforming the pristine FCNS. All materials revealed high stability and morphological robustness during OER and HER. Notably, DFT calculation suggests that N and P doping boost the OER activity of the pristine FCNS, whereas N doping enhances the HER activity.
