Abstract
The Schiff base enaminones (3Z)-4-(5-ethylsulfonyl-2-hydroxyanilino)pent-3-en-2-one, C13H17NO4S, (I), and (3Z)-4-(5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyanilino)pent-3-en-2-one, C15H21NO2, (II), were studied by X-ray crystallography and density functional theory (DFT). Although the keto tautomer of these compounds is dominant, the O=C-C=C-N bond lengths are consistent with some electron delocalization and partial enol character. Both (I) and (II) are nonplanar, with the amino-phenol group canted relative to the rest of the molecule; the twist about the N(enamine)-C(aryl) bond leads to dihedral angles of 40.5 (2) and -116.7 (1)° for (I) and (II), respectively. Compound (I) has a bifurcated intramolecular hydrogen bond between the N-H group and the flanking carbonyl and hydroxy O atoms, as well as an intermolecular hydrogen bond, leading to an infinite one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded chain. Compound (II) has one intramolecular hydrogen bond and one intermolecular C=O...H-O hydrogen bond, and consequently also forms a one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded chain. The DFT-calculated structures [in vacuo, B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level] for the keto tautomers compare favourably with the X-ray crystal structures of (I) and (II), confirming the dominance of the keto tautomer. The simulations indicate that the keto tautomers are 20.55 and 18.86 kJ mol(-1) lower in energy than the enol tautomers for (I) and (II), respectively.

Abstract
The zwitterionic lambda(5)Si,lambda(5)Si'-disilicates 1-8 were synthesized and characterized by solid-state and solution NMR spectroscopy. In addition, compounds 26 H(2)O, 32 CH(3)CN, 45/2 CH(3)CN, 6CH(3)OH, 7, and 8CH(3)OHCH(3)CN were studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The optically active (Delta,Delta,R,R,R,R)-configured compounds 1-8 contain two pentacoordinate (formally negatively charged) silicon atoms and two tetracoordinate (formally positively charged) nitrogen atoms. One (ammonio)alkyl group is bound to each of the two silicon centers, and two tetradentate (R,R)-tartrato(4-) ligands bridge the silicon atoms. Although these lambda(5)Si,lambda(5)Si'-disilicates contain SiO(4)C skeletons, some of them display a remarkable stability in aqueous solution as shown by NMR spectroscopy and ESI mass spectrometry.

Abstract
The neutral heteroleptic hexacoordinate silicon(IV) complexes 4 and 5 (SiO(6) skeletons) and the neutral pentacoordinate silicon(IV) complexes 7-9 (SiO(4)N skeletons) were synthesized, starting from the hexacoordinate precursor 2 and the pentacoordinate precursor 6, respectively. In these reactions, two monoanionic cyanato-N ligands are replaced by one dianionic bidentate O,O-chelate ligand. Compounds 4, 5, and 7-9 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state and solution NMR spectroscopy. The chiral silicon(IV) complexes 4, 5, 7, and 8 were obtained as racemic mixtures, whereas 9 was isolated as a cocrystallizate consisting of the two diastereomers, (C,S)-9 and (A,S)-9 (ratio 1:1). The stereodynamics of 5 and 8 were studied by variable-temperature (1)H NMR experiments.

Abstract
The exceptional stability of recently reported pentaorganosilicates is investigated by bond energy analyses. Experimental coupling constants are used to probe their electronic structure, entailing bonds with mixed ionic-covalent character. Our analyses reconfirm that the axial bonds are more prone to heterolytic cleavage than are the equatorial bonds. Aryl substituents provide substantial electronic stabilization by charge delocalization, but cause steric crowding due to ortho-hydrogen repulsion. In contrast, silicates with two ax,eq biaryl groups are not congested. The remaining substituent is confined to an equatorial site, where it is insensitive to elimination. These concepts adequately explain the experimentally observed stability trends and are valuable for designing other stable pentaorganosilicates.
