Abstract
Hexasubstituted benzenes are interesting platforms for the generation of functional materials, whose applications span from supramolecular recognition to organic electronics. Their synthesis is difficult to achieve by controlling multiple substitution steps of all hydrogen atoms on the aromatic benzene skeleton, so, often, cycloaddition reactions from disubsituted alkynes are used. In this work, we report a novel, straightforward route to C3-symmetrical hexasubstituted aromatic synthons with a diverse and rich pattern of functionalities, and we report about their packing mode in the crystals, in which, unprecedentedly, directional, strong halogen bonding interactions are capable of forming bidimensional supramolecular weaving.

Abstract
A synthesis of multiply arylated naphthalenes and anthracenes with eight different substituents has been accomplished. The key intermediates are tetraarylthiophene S-oxides, which are synthesized through a method involving sequential C-H arylation and cross-coupling from 3-methoxythiophene, followed by oxidation of the sulfur atom. The resulting tetraarylthiophene S-oxides can be converted into a tetraaryl benzynes or naphthalynes and then merged through [4+2] cycloaddition reaction with another tetraarylthiophene S-oxide, thereby resulting in the programmed synthesis of octaarylnaphthalenes and octaarylanthracenes.

Abstract
Multisubstituted olefins are fundamental motifs in organic compounds. In this account, we describe the synthesis of organic molecules bearing an olefinic moiety by the transition-metal-catalyzed regio- and stereoselective addition of a variety of interelement compounds to alkynes. Regio- and stereoselective silaboration, diborylation, and chlorothiolation have been achieved by using the transition-metal catalysts. The subsequent cross-coupling reactions of the boron-containing alkenes to install various aryl groups afforded the corresponding tri- and tetraarylated olefins. This account describes our research on the highly regio- and stereoselective synthesis of multifunctionalized olefins such as tetraarylethenes with four different aryl groups.

Abstract
Since its discovery in 1825, benzene has served as one of the most used and indispensable building blocks of chemical compounds, ranging from pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals to plastics and those used in organic electronic devices. Benzene has six hydrogen atoms that can each be replaced by different substituents, which means that the structural diversity of benzene derivatives is intrinsically extraordinary. The number of possible substituted benzenes from n different substituents is (2n + 2n(2) + 4n(3) + 3n(4) + n(6))/12. However, owing to a lack of general synthetic methods for making multisubstituted benzenes, this potentially huge structural diversity has not been fully exploited. Here, we describe a programmed synthesis of hexaarylbenzenes using C-H activation, cross-coupling and [4+2] cycloaddition reactions. The present method allows for the isolation and structure-property characterization of hexaarylbenzenes with distinctive aryl substituents at all positions for the first time. Moreover, the established protocol can be applied to the synthesis of tetraarylnaphthalenes and pentaarylpyridines.

Abstract
Merging is the game! The coupling of a domino reaction and an internal neutral redox reaction constitutes an excellent manifold for the stereoselective synthesis of di- and trisubstituted olefins featuring a malonate unit, an ester, or a free carboxylic acid as substituents at the allylic position (see scheme; MW=microwave). The reaction utilizes simple starting materials (propargyl vinyl ethers), methanol or water as solvents, and a very simple and bench-friendly protocol.

Abstract
The hydrogen autotransfer process involves an initial oxidative hydrogen elimination, followed by different types of reactions, and is completed with a reductive hydrogen addition to give the final product. The sequence allows the alkylation of different nucleophilic agents using environmentally benign alcohols as electrophiles, mild conditions, and soft bases, with water produced as the only waste material. Recent examples of modulating the organometallic catalyst have also lent themselves to expansion of the range of available substrates, as described in this Minireview.

Abstract
Photoluminescence of simple arylbenzenes with ready synthetic accessibility is enhanced by two orders of magnitude through aggregate formation; viscosity and temperature effects indicate that the emission enhancement is due to the restriction of their intramolecular rotations in the solid state.

Abstract
Aggregation in poor solvents and complexation with calf thymus DNA and bovine serum albumin turn "on" the fluorescence of tetraphenylethylene derivatives, due to the restriction of intra-molecular rotations of the dyes in the aggregates and complexes.
