Abstract
The development of artificial light-harvesting systems mimicking the natural photosynthesis method is an ever-growing field of research. Numerous systems such as polymers, metal complexes, POFs, COFs, supramolecular frameworks etc. have been fabricated to accomplish more efficient energy transfer and storage. Among them, the supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) formed by non-covalent metal-ligand interaction, have shown the capacity to not only undergo single and multistep energy migration but also to utilize the harvested energy for a wide variety of applications such as photocatalysis, tunable emissive systems, encrypted anti-counterfeiting materials, white light emitters etc. This review sheds light on the light-harvesting behavior of both the 2D metallacycles and 3D metallacages where design ingenuity has been executed to afford energy harvesting by both donor ligands as well as metal acceptors.

Abstract
Well-ordered combination of defined coordination spheres and multiple types of ligands (heteroleptic) in a given structure can expand the structural complexity and functional diversity of the resulting metallosupramolecules. Such heteroleptic metallosupramolecular architectures are expected to afford advanced utility in a variety of applications. In this concise review article, recent advances in the development of multi-nuclear-cluster-based heteroleptic multiple-stranded (HLMS) metallosupramolecules are summarized and demonstrated. To construct HLMS metallosupramolecules, one type of multitopic ligands can be employed for building up multiple strands, while another type of ligands can be utilized to construct multi-nuclear clusters. Most HLMS metallosupramolecules adopt helical geometries and have high molecular symmetry, which can be key factors for the structural completion. HLMS metallosupramolecules can be used as basic building blocks for the fabrication of higher-order polymeric or discrete assembly architectures with well-defined geometries.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and solution based photophysical properties of a new Pt(ii)-terpyridine complex coupled to a perylene monoimide (PMI) chromophoric unit through an acetylene linkage. This structural arrangement resulted in quantitative quenching of the highly fluorescent PMI chromophore by introducing metal character into the lowest energy singlet state, thereby leading to the formation of a long-lived PMI-ligand localized triplet excited state (τ = 8.4 μs). Even though the phosphorescence from this triplet state was not observed, highly efficient quenching of this excited state by dissolved oxygen and the observation of singlet oxygen photoluminescence in the near-IR at 1270 nm initially pointed towards triplet excited state character. Additionally, the coincidence of the excited state absorbance difference spectra from the sensitized PMI ligand using a triplet donor and the Pt-PMI complex provided strong evidence for this triplet state assignment, which was further supported by TD-DFT calculations.

Abstract
A new fluorescent derivative of cholesterol, N,N'-(N-(2-(3β-cholest-5-en-3yl-formamido)ethyl) pyrene-1-sulfonamido)ethyl perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic acid bisimide (CPPBI), was designed and synthesized. In the design, pyrene (Py) and perylene bisimide (PBI) were specially chosen as the energy donor and the acceptor, respectively. Fluorescence studies revealed that (1) CPPBI shows a strong tendency to form supra-molecular assemblies, (2) the assemblies possess a high efficiency of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) via intermolecular interactions, and (3) the profile and position of its fluorescence emission are highly dependent upon the nature of its medium, but the medium shows little effect on the efficiency of the energy transfer, suggesting that the chromophores including both Py and PBI units enjoy some rotational and/or translational mobility in the aggregated state of the compound. Temperature- and concentration-dependent (1)H NMR spectroscopy studies revealed that both hydrogen-bonding and π-π stacking play a great role in stabilizing the assemblies of the compound, and confirmed the existence of π-π stacking between the Py moieties and between the PBI residues of the compound, of which the donor and the acceptor may have arranged in an appropriate orientation and at a suitable distance which are the key factors to determine the FRET efficiency. Moreover, the CPPBI-based film possesses unusual photochemical stability, and its emission is sensitive to the presence of some organic vapors, in particular aniline.

Abstract
The chromophores ethynyl pyrene as blue, ethynyl perylene as green and ethynyl Nile red as red emitter were conjugated to the 5-position of 2'-deoxyuridine via an acetylene bridge. Using phosphoramidite chemistry on solid phase labelled DNA duplexes were prepared that bear single chromophore modifications, and binary and ternary combinations of these chromophore modifications. The steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectra of all three chromophores were studied in these modified DNA duplexes. An energy-transfer cascade occurs from ethynyl pyrene over ethynyl perylene to ethynyl Nile red and subsequently an electron-transfer cascade in the opposite direction (from ethynyl Nile red to ethynyl perylene or ethynyl pyrene, but not from ethynyl perylene to ethynyl pyrene). The electron-transfer processes finally provide charge separation. The efficiencies by these energy and electron-transfer processes can be tuned by the distances between the chromophores and the sequences. Most importantly, excitation at any wavelength between 350 and 700 nm finally leads to charge separated states which make these DNA samples promising candidates for light-harvesting systems.

Abstract
Chemical ingenuity will play a significant role in solving the greatest challenge currently facing society: providing clean and carbon neutral energy for all of humanity. Molecular artificial photosynthesis is an emerging technology based on principles learned from Nature where individual components perform the essential light-harvesting, charge-separation, and water splitting functions to store solar energy in the form of chemical bonds. This tutorial review focuses specifically on the application of metallosupramolecular self-assembly strategies to interface solar fuel catalysts with photosensitizers and construct light-harvesting antennae capable of achieving panchromatic absorption and directional energy concentration.

Abstract
During the last ten years, our research group has been applying metal-mediated self-assembly processes to the construction of multiporphyrin functional assemblies. The construction of well-defined and discrete supramolecular structures resulting from self-assembly requires the use of multiple and separated connections operating in one or more closed loops. Consequently, the great majority of the multiporphyrin assemblies that we have prepared are of cyclic nature. We have placed special emphasis not only on the characterization in solution of the formed assemblies but also on the thermodynamic characterization of the assembly process and in the assessment of cooperativity. Finally, we also present examples in which functionality has been derived from the three-dimensional structures of multicomponent assemblies.

Abstract
We present a general strategy for the synthesis of stable, multifunctional cuboctahedral complexes in which coordination-driven self-assembly allows for precise control over positioning of either ferrocene or crown ether functionalities. The appropriate stoichiometric combination of functionalized 120 degree diplatinum acceptor units with tritopic donor units afforded supramolecular cuboctahedra with covalently linked functional groups. The compounds are characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and electrochemistry.

Abstract
Ten coordination compounds based on a sulfonated monoazo dye, formulated as M(H(2)O)(2)(4,4'-abs)(2) (M = Mn , Co , Cu , Zn , Cd and Pb ; 4,4'-abs = 4-aminoazobenzene-4'-sulfonic anion), Ag(4,4'-abs) (), [Ln(H(2)O)(phen)(2)(4,4'-abs)(3)].3H(2)O (Ln = Gd , Tb , and Ho ; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), as well as the parent ligand L [(4,4'-Habs)(2).4H(2)O] and precursor NaL.HL [Na(4,4'-abs)(4,4'-Habs)] were successfully isolated. Structural analyses revealed that the structures of compounds, and vary according to the coordination geometries of the metal ions, and vary from double-strand chain structures () to a 3-D pillared-layer framework to mononuclear complexes. The double-strand chain structures of are isostructural, and are built on octahedral metal centers and double bridging 4,4'-abs ligands coordinating via terminal N- and O-donors. The silver-containing compound displays a pillared-layer structure constructed from 4.8(2) silver sulfonate nets pillared by the linear backbones of 4,4'-abs ligands. Compounds , which are also isostructural, possess mononuclear structures consisting of a metal cation, three 4,4'-abs anions, two auxiliary phen ligands, one aqua ligand and three non-coordinated water molecules. Evidence on two series of isostructural compounds indicates that structures of d- and f-block metal derivatives are dominated by the coordination mode of the ligands. The surface chemistry of compound has been investigated based on the LBL (layer-by-layer) technique. The as-synthesized multilayer films with different composite components exhibit different surface behaviours.

Abstract
Selective functionalisation of the tridentate ligand 1-(2-aminoethyl)-3-methyl-3-(2-pyridyl)azetidine at its terminal amino-nitrogen atom can be readily achieved by both reductive alkylation and simple alkylation reactions to give tri-, quadri-, quinque- and sexi-dentate derivatives. Simple alkylation by 2-picolinyl chloride provides the only example of a second reaction pathway where the azetidine ring of the reactant has undergone activation towards ring opening. Structural characterisation of the Cu(II) complexes of these ligands has revealed several remarkable aspects of their solid-state coordination chemistry, including the formation of infinite helical aggregates through pi-stacking and tetramerisation through carboxylate bridging, as well as further examples of the crystallisation of mixed species found to be rather common with complexes of the parent ligand.

Abstract
A new approach wherein steric interactions between substituents of unsymmetrical bis(4-pyridyl)acetylene ligands dictate the self-selection of single isomers of [4 + 4] self-assembled squares is presented. Each [4 + 4] self-assembly is characterized by multinuclear (31)P and (1)H NMR spectroscopies and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. NMR spectroscopic studies are used to provide a means of evaluating the efficiency of bulky substituents at proximal or remote positions relative to the Pt-N bonding motif to direct self-selection. Molecular modeling using the MMFF force field is utilized to determine the relative energy of different isomers of each assembly, and modeling results reasonably explain the trend in self-selectivity with varying pyridyl substitution.

Abstract
For the efficient self-assembly of metallo-supramolecular complexes, not only reversibility is required but also two other properties have to be controlled as well: (i) The right binding sites need to be programmed into the building blocks at the appropriate positions. (ii) The building blocks must be rigid enough to support the geometrical arrangement and to avoid the unfavorable entropy effects connected with the conformational fixation of flexible molecules. A series of different bis-pyridyl ligands is reported which self-assemble with (dppp)M(OTf) 2 complexes (dppp = 1,3-bis-(diphenylphosphino)propane; M = Pd (II), Pt (II)) to yield squares and/or triangles as the products. Enthalpic contributions (higher strain in the triangle) and entropic contributions (higher number of triangles from the same building blocks) determine the equilibrium. The effects of concentration, temperature, and solvent properties on the equilibrium have been studied. To characterize the complexes under study, a combination of (1)H, (31)P, and diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy, electrospray-ionization Fourier-transform ion-cyclotron-resonance mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography is needed. Variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy provides evidence for fast ligand-exchange processes occurring for the Pd complexes, while the Pt complexes exchange ligands much more slowly.

Abstract
Energy is the most important issue of the 21st century. About 85% of our energy comes from fossil fuels, a finite resource unevenly distributed beneath the Earth's surface. Reserves of fossil fuels are progressively decreasing, and their continued use produces harmful effects such as pollution that threatens human health and greenhouse gases associated with global warming. Prompt global action to solve the energy crisis is therefore needed. To pursue such an action, we are urged to save energy and to use energy in more efficient ways, but we are also forced to find alternative energy sources, the most convenient of which is solar energy for several reasons. The sun continuously provides the Earth with a huge amount of energy, fairly distributed all over the world. Its enormous potential as a clean, abundant, and economical energy source, however, cannot be exploited unless it is converted into useful forms of energy. This Review starts with a brief description of the mechanism at the basis of the natural photosynthesis and, then, reports the results obtained so far in the field of photochemical conversion of solar energy. The "grand challenge" for chemists is to find a convenient means for artificial conversion of solar energy into fuels. If chemists succeed to create an artificial photosynthetic process, "... life and civilization will continue as long as the sun shines!", as the Italian scientist Giacomo Ciamician forecast almost one hundred years ago.

Abstract
A series of diagonally and laterally bridged regioisomeric macrocycles based on 1,6,7,12-tetraaryloxy-substituted perylene bisimides (APBIs) have been synthesized and characterized. The different orientations of the aryloxy residues, that is, horizontal or perpendicular to the perylene core, in the regioisomeric macrocycles have been elucidated by NMR spectroscopy, and the dynamic properties of the laterally bridged regioisomers have been investigated by temperature-dependent NMR measurements. The influence of the different orientations of the aryloxy substituents on the electrochemical properties of APBIs is demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry, which reveals that a perpendicular orientation of the aryloxy residues relative to the perylene core leads to a substantial decrease of the LUMO energy level of the perylene bisimide electrophore. The optical properties of the regioisomeric macrocycles have been determined by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. It has been shown that the diagonally bridged macrocycles exhibit optical properties that differ significantly from those of an open-chain reference compound, whereas the optical properties of the laterally bridged isomers resemble those of the reference system. This demonstrates that unrestricted aryloxy substituents prefer the lateral conformation in solution. Solvent-dependent fluorescent properties have been exemplified for one diagonally bridged derivative, suggesting a photoinduced electron transfer process as fluorescence quenching mechanism for APBIs. From these investigations, guidelines toward highly fluorescent APBI dyes in polar media could be derived.

Abstract
We prepared the first sigma-bonded metal complexes of widely utilized organic dyes, perylene tetracarboxylic acid diimides (PDIs). These 1,7-dipalladium PDI complexes were synthesized by C-Br oxidative addition of 1,7-dibromo-N,N'-dicyclohexyl PDI (Br2PDI) to Pd(0) phosphine complexes bearing triphenylphosphine and bischelating 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe). The structures of Pd-PDI complexes were elucidated by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Surprisingly, despite direct attachement of two late transition metal centers, Pd-PDI systems are highly fluorescent (Phi=0.65 and 0.22 for triphenylphosphine and dppe systems, respectively). This is rationalized in terms of weak electronic interactions between the metal centers and PDI pi-system, as revealed by TD-DFT calculations.
