Abstract
A series of calix[4]arenes with upper-rim sulfanylpropyl and p-methoxyphenylazo groups (compounds 8-10) were synthesized and found to be effective chromogenic sensors for selectively detecting Hg2+, Hg+, and Ag+ ions among 18 screened metal perchlorates. In comparison to previously reported diallyl- and dithioacetoxypropyl-substituted calix[4]arenes (5, 6, 14, 15, and 16) and the newly synthesized compound 7, the distal (5,17)-disulfanylpropyl-substituted di-p-methoxyphenylazocalix[4]arene 9 demonstrated superior performance with a limit of detection of 0.028 μM for Hg2+ ions in a chloroform/methanol (v/v = 399/1) cosolvent. Job's plot revealed 1:1 binding stoichiometry for all these upper-rim sulfanylpropyl- and p-methoxyphenylazo-substituted calix[4]arenes 8-10 with Hg2+ ions, and Benesi-Hildebrand plots from ultraviolet/visible (UV-vis) titration spectra were used for the determination of their association constants. Our findings indicated that the distal orientation of two p-methoxyphenylazo and two sulfanylpropyl groups in calix[4]arenes 8-10 is more favorable for binding Hg2+ ions than the proximal (5,11-) orientation; moreover, the adjacent sulfanylpropyl groups exhibited superior coordination as ligands compared to the allyl and thioacetoxypropyl groups. Notably, compounds 8-10 displayed a comparable trend in their association with Ag+ ions, albeit with 1 order of magnitude lower binding constants and a distinct binding mode compared to Hg2+ ions. UV-vis spectroscopy, Job's plots, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance titration studies are presented and discussed.

Abstract
In this contribution is reported the sensitive properties of the Zn(II) Schiff base complex, 1, in dichloromethane with respect a series of primary, secondary, and tertiary aliphatic amines through the study of fluorescence enhancement upon amine coordination to the Lewis acidic Zn(II) metal center with formation of 1:1 adducts. It is found that complex 1 exhibits selectivity and nanomolar sensitivity for primary and alicyclic amines. A distinct selectivity is also observed along the series of secondary or tertiary amines, paralleling the increasing steric hindrance at the nitrogen atom. The binding interaction can be related to the Lewis basicity of the coordinating amine; thus, complex 1 represents a suitable reference Lewis acid, and estimated binding constants within the investigated amine series can be related to their relative Lewis basicity. A relative order of the Lewis basicity can be established for acyclic amines, primary > secondary > tertiary, while an inverted order, tertiary > secondary ≈ primary (acyclic), is found in the case of alicyclic amines. The present approach represents a simple, suitable method to ranking the relative Lewis basicity of aliphatic amines in low-polarity, nonprotogenic solvents.

Abstract
2,6-Diphenyl-4-(2,4,6-triphenylpyridinium-1-yl)phenolate (1a) and 4-[(1-methyl-4(1H)-pyridinylidene)-ethylidene]-2,5-cyclohexadien-1-one (2a) were protonated in organic solvents (dichloromethane, acetonitrile, and DMSO) to form 1b and 2b, respectively. The appearance of the solvatochromic bands of 1a and 2a was studied UV-vis spectrophotometrically by deprotonation of 1b and 2b in solution in the presence of the following amines: aniline (AN), N-methylaniline (NMAN), N,N-dimethylaniline (NDAN), n-butylamine (BA), diethylamine (DEA), and triethylamine (TEA). Titrations of 1b and 2b with the amines were carried out and the binding constants were determined from the titration curves in each solvent, using a mathematical model adapted from the literature which considers the simultaneous participation of two dye: amine stoichiometries, 1:1 and 1:2. The data obtained showed the following base order for the two compounds in DMSO: BA>DEA>TEA, while aromatic amines did not cause any effect. In dichloromethane, the following base order for 1b was verified: TEA>DEA>BA≫NDAN, while for 2b the order was: TEA>DEA>BA, suggesting that 1b is more acidic than 2b. The data in acetonitrile indicated for 1b and 2b the following order for the amines: DEA>TEA>BA. The diversity of the experimental data were explained based on a model that considers the level of interaction of the protonated dyes with the amines to be dependent on three aspects: (a) the basicity of the amine, which varies according to their molecular structure and the solvent in which it is dissolved, (b) the molecular structure of the dye, and (c) the solvent used to study the system.
