Abstract
Crystalline hydrates of macrocyclic compounds such as pyroagllol[4]arenes (PgCs) and resorcin[4]arenes (RsCs) are rare owing to their lower water solubility. Functionalization of these macrocyclic compounds is an affordable way to enhance water solubility. However, functionalization also encounters the formation of multiple conformers and subsequent difficulty in purification of the product. Herein, four novel crystalline hydrates of functionalized PgCs and RsCs were synthesized. Formation of water channels and the effects of intermolecular interactions on the physical properties of these novel hydrates are discussed.

Abstract
Pyridine moiety-appended doubly bridged cyclotricatechylene (CTC(Py)2(OH)2) was synthesized and characterized. Solid state studies show that CTC(Py)2(OH)2 forms a capsular assembly in the presence of water but a polymeric assembly in its absence.

Abstract
Macrocyclic compounds, such as resorcin[4]arenes and pyrogallol[4]arenes, have proven to be useful building blocks in the construction of supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) because of their unique bowl-like shape and ability to interact through variety of intermolecular interactions. Herein, we report the synthesis and crystal structures of two functionalized resorcin[4]arenes and pyroagllol[4]arenes, 4-hydroxyphenylresorcin[4]arenes, and 4-hydroxyphenylpyrogallol[4]arenes. These phenyl-functionalized macrocycles usually have different conformers, such as cone, boat, chair, saddle, and diamond. The successful separation of predominant conformers from the crude product was carried out with solvent-extraction technique. The shape and molecular arrangement of these conformers in the individual crystal structure was verified with single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies.

Abstract
The magnetic behavior of nickel-seamed C-propylpyrogallol[4]arene dimeric and hexameric nanocapsular assemblies has been investigated in the solid state using a SQUID magnetometer. These dimeric and hexameric capsular entities show magnetic differentiation both in terms of moment per nanocapsule and potential antiferromagnetic interactions within individual nanocapsules. The weak antiferromagnetic behavior observed at low temperatures indicates dipolar interactions between neighboring nickel atoms; however, this effect is higher in the hexameric nickel-seamed assembly. The differences in magnetic behavior of dimer versus hexamer can be attributed to different coordination environments and metal arrangements in the two nanocapsular assemblies.

Abstract
The stability of copper-seamed C-alkylpyrogallol[4]arene hexamers with varying chain lengths in solution has been studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The progression in diameter of spherical capsules with increasing alkyl chain lengths of copper-seamed hexamers in solution suggests both robustness as well as a close correlation between the solid phase and solution phase structures.

Abstract
Solid C-methylcalix[4]resorcinarene solvated by acetonitrile and water (CAL-Me) and then modified by slow solvent evaporation (CAL-Me*) was studied using single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, and (13)C CP/MAS NMR. The CAL-Me solvate crystallizes in the monoclinic P2(1)/n space group with three CH(3)CN and two H(2)O molecules in the asymmetric part of the unit cell. The CAL-Me molecules adopt a typical crown conformation with all of the hydroxyl groups of the aryl rings oriented up and all of the methyl groups disposed down (the rccc isomeric form). The crystalline network is formed by resorcinarene, CH(3)CN, and H(2)O molecules and assembled by intermolecular hydrogen bonds and weak C-H...A or C-H...pi interactions. The desolvated CAL-Me* loses its crystalline character and becomes partly amorphous. It is devoid of CH(3)CN and deficient in water. However, the resorcinarene molecules still remain in the crown conformation supported by intramolecular hydrogen bonds, while intermolecular hydrogen bonds are considerably disintegrated. The work directs general attention to the problem of stability and polymorphism of resorcinarene solvates. It shows that the joint use of diffractometric and spectroscopic methods is advantageous in the structural studies of complex crystalline macromolecular systems. On the other hand, the solid-state IR and NMR spectroscopic analyses applied in tandem have been found highly beneficial to elucidate the disordered structure of poorly crystalline, desolvated resorcinarene.
