Abstract
Bifunctional Co/H-ZSM-5 zeolites were prepared by a surface organometallic chemistry grafting route, namely, by the stoichiometric reaction between cobaltocene and the Brønsted acid sites in zeolites. The catalyst was applied to a model reaction of the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of stearic acid (SA). The cobalt species existed in the form of isolated Co2+ ions at the exchange positions after grafting, transformed to CoO species on the surface of the zeolite, stabilized inside the zeolite channels upon calcination in air, and finally reduced by hydrogen to homogeneous clusters of metallic cobalt species approximately 1.5 nm in size. During this process, the Brønsted acid sites of the H-ZSM-5 zeolites were preserved with a slightly reduced acid strength. The as-prepared bifunctional catalyst exhibited an approximately 16 times higher activity for the hydrodeoxygenation of SA (2.11 gSA gcat-1 h-1 ) than the reference catalyst (0.13 gSA gcat-1 h-1 ) prepared by solid-state ion exchange and a high C18 /C17 ratio of approximately 24. The remarkable hydrodeoxygenation performance of the bifunctional Co/H-ZSM-5 was owed to the effective synergy between the uniformed metallic cobalt clusters and the Brønsted acid sites in H-ZSM-5. The simplified reaction network and kinetics of the SA hydrodeoxygenation catalyzed by the as-prepared bifunctional Co/H-ZSM-5 zeolites were also investigated.

Abstract
Structural properties of a series of mordenite and ZSM-5 zeolites with different framework Al distribution modified with oxygenated extraframework Ga, Zn, Al, Cu and Fe complexes were investigated by means of periodic density functional theory calculations. It is demonstrated that mononuclear oxygenated and hydroxylated cationic metal complexes in high-silica zeolites tend to self-organize into binuclear complexes. In the cases of Ga- and Fe-modified zeolites, it is shown that the catalytic activity of the most stable binuclear extraframework cations is much higher than that of the hypothetical very reactive mononuclear counterparts. This is due to a weaker binding of reaction intermediates and easier regeneration of the initial active complexes in the course of the catalytic reaction. The formation of multiple-charged binuclear oxygenated metal species in zeolites is a general phenomenon. It does not require a specific distribution of the equivalent number of negative framework charges that compensate for the positive charge of the cationic complexes. The location and the stability of cationic complexes in zeolite micropores are mainly determined by the coordination properties of the metal centres.

Abstract
Four types of copper-containing MCM-41 mesoporous silicas were synthesized by the surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC) procedure (Cu/MCM-41-S), mechanical mixing (Cu/MCM-41-M), impregnation (Cu/MCM-41-I), and the hydrothermal technique (Cu/MCM-41-H). The resultant samples were characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N(2) physical adsorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), and infrared spectroscopy (IR) of NO adsorption. Catalytic behaviors of these samples for hydroxylation of phenol with H(2)O(2) were evaluated. The results revealed that depending on the preparation methods the samples contain different copper-oxo species and thus show different catalytic behaviors. Among these samples, the one prepared by SOMC contains a predominant amount of isolated Cu(2+) and exhibits the most excellent catalytic activity and selectivity. The amount of isolated copper species decreases in the order of Cu/MCM-41-S > Cu/MCM-41-H > Cu/MCM-41-I > Cu/MCM-41-M, while the amount of copper oxide clusters increases in a reversal order. The difference in the catalytic activity and product selectivity of these four samples could be rationally explained by the distinction of chemical states of copper species. The highly dispersed isolated Cu(2+) species are identified as the active sites in the phenol hydroxylation, while the nonisolated Cu(2+) clusters or oxide are responsible for the deep oxidation of primary product HQ and the decrease of product selectivity. The mechanism of the copper-catalyzed phenol hydroxylation was proposed.
