Abstract
Self-assembled coordination complexes prepared from a combination of Pd(II) components with one or more types of high-symmetry or low-symmetry bis/tris/tetrakis-monodentate ligands are considered in this review. The structures of these complexes are viewed in terms of the presence of a metallo-macromonocycle or conjoined metallo-macromonocycles/metallocages in the frameworks. Analysis of the typical molecular structures revealed an open truth that one or more units of metallo-macromonocycles can be conjoined to afford planar or non-planar systems. In the same line, the enveloping surface of a 3D cage can be considered as a multiple number of conjoined metallomacrocycles that embrace a 3D space from all directions. However, two or more units of cages are conjoined in a multi-3D-cavity cage system and such a system is considered as a conjoined cage. Construction of such conjoined cages having a finite but multiple number of 3D-cavities unified in a single molecular architecture is a challenging task when compared to that of single-3D-cavity based compounds. Conjoining of as many as four units of 3D cages is known so far. Single- as well as multi-cavity cages of lower symmetry have become a very recent trend in this regard where low-symmetry ligands or mixed ligand ensembles are crafted in the framework of the cages. Other structural diversities like helicity in cages, and supramolecular isomerism are also included in this assorted literature work. Although isomerism in classical coordination complexes is well known, it is very less studied in self-assembled coordination complexes. Ligand isomerism is one such feature that is reviewed here. The dynamic behavior of the cages results in interesting reactivity aspects. A large variety of dynamic processes are collected under an umbrella, i.e., "ligand exchange reactions" and described with examples. Intermolecular interaction among the already self-assembled molecules is possible in solution, solid, and gel-phases as discussed in the last part of this review. The understanding of intermolecular interaction is likely to influence different areas of research including crystal engineering, and materials chemistry.

Abstract
A pyridine/aniline appended unsymmetrical bis-monodentate ligand N-(3-aminophenyl)nicotinamide, Lun is synthesized via condensation of nicotinic acid with excess m-phenylene diamine. A low-symmetry binuclear complex of the Pd2L'2Lun2 type and an extremely rare trinuclear complex of the Pd3Lun6 type are produced by self-assembly of the ligand Lun with cis-protected palladium(II) (i.e., PdL') and palladium(II), respectively. Two isomers (i.e. [(2,0), (2,0)] and [(1,1), (1,1)]-forms) are theoretically possible for the Pd2L'2Lun2-type complex whereas nine isomers can be envisaged in the case of the Pd3Lun6-type arrangement. However, one of the isomers of the Pd2L'2Lun2-type complex as well as the one for the Pd3Lun6-type complex are experimentally obtained. The exclusive formation of specific isomers could be predicted from the 1D/2D NMR study in the solution state and the DFT calculations in the gas phase/implicit solvent media. The formation of the predicted all-(1,1)-[Pd2(en)2Lun2](NO3)4 has been confirmed by a single-crystal XRD study. DFT calculations for the isomers of the Pd3Lun6-type arrangement show that a [cis(2,2), cis(2,2), cis(2,2)] isomer is energetically favourable than the alternatively predicted [trans(2,2), trans(2,2), trans(2,2)] isomer. Conformational changes within the build of the exclusively formed isomers are proposed on the basis of NMR study.

Abstract
Stoddart's "blue box" (B4+), is one of the most iconic molecules in the recent history of chemistry. This rectangular tetracationic cyclophane has not only the ability to complex a wide variety of aromatic guests in organic or aqueous media, but because of the presence of viologen units on its structure, it also behaves as a redox-based molecular switch. In turn, B4+-based host-guest complexes can translate this responsiveness from the molecular to the supramolecular level, resulting in host-controlled binding. This unique behavior has allowed the development of a wide variety of B4+-containing (supra)molecular switches and machines, which certainly have inspired a whole generation of supramolecular chemists. Nevertheless, issues, such as synthetic accessibility, structural diversity, or the implementation of new chemical properties (luminescence, pH- or photo-responsiveness, etc.), have restricted somehow the development of new practical applications in the ever-changing realm of modern host-guest chemistry.Based largely on our own research throughout the past decade, we will highlight in this account two different strategies for the self-assembly of new B4+ analogues: (1) Pd(II)/Pt(II) metal-directed self-assembly and (2) hydrazone-based dynamic covalent chemistry. In essence, the strategies are based on the substitution of inert C-C single bonds on the macrocycle by Pd/Pt-N or C═N bonds of modifiable lability. In the case of the metal-directed synthesis, the use of Pd(II) centers allows for the spontaneous self-assembly at r.t., either in organic or aqueous media, of N-alkyl-4,4'-bipyridinium-based ligands into the desired metallacycles. Conversely, more inert Pt(II) salts can be also implemented, rendering the synthesis of more kinetically stable analogues. Alternatively, wholly organic B4+ congeners can be produced in a modular fashion by using hydrazone-based dynamic covalent chemistry, allowing for the self-assembly in acidic water of macrocyclic pH-responsive molecular switches of adjustable kinetic stability.Owning pyridinium-based cavities of appropriate size, our B4+-inspired cyclophanes are able to complex aromatic substrates by a conjunction of the hydrophobic effect and π-π/C-H···π interactions. Consequently, we will discuss in detail the different host-guest complexes that can be achieved using our cyclophanes. Considering this knowledge, the implementation of our B4+-based macrocycles onto mechanically interlocked molecules and knots will be introduced, as well as the development of practical applications for the hosts in currently important research fields, such as the development of duplex and G4-DNA binders, supramolecular catalysis or the sequestration of relevant pollutants. Finally, self-assembled hosts offer the unique opportunity to include constitutional dynamism into host-guest chemistry, so examples of the development by our group of stimuli-responsive constitutionally dynamic libraries and self-sorted systems will be highlighted.

Abstract
Self-assembly of rigid-rod dipyridine ligand 1 with M(en)(NO3)2 (M = Pd, Pt) affords triangular (3, 5) and square (4, 6) supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs). The binding affinity of 1 toward CB[n]-type containers results in the formation of triangular [4]molecular necklaces ([4]MNs, 7-10) by either one-pot or post complexation approaches as evidenced by 1H NMR, diffusion ordered spectroscopy, and ESI-MS.

Abstract
The interaction with native DNA of a 2,7-diazapyrenium-based ligand 1 and its Pt(II) rectangular metallacycle 2 is explored through circular and linear dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopies. The metal-free ligand 1 binds through intercalation, with a binding constant of approximately 5×10(5) M(-1), whereas the metallacycle 2 binds and bends the DNA with a binding constant of 7×10(6) M(-1). PCR assays show that metallo-supramolecular box 2 interferes with DNA transactions in vitro whereas the intercalator 1 does not. The metallacycle is active against four human cancer cell lines, with IC(50) values ranging between 3.1 and 19.2 μM and shows similar levels of efficacy, but a different spectrum of activity, to cisplatin.

Abstract
The high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) enantioseparation of eleven atropisomeric 4,4'-bipyridines was performed in the normal and polar organic phase mode using three cellulose-based chiral stationary phases (CSPs), namely Lux Cellulose-1, Lux Cellulose-2, Lux Cellulose-4, and two amylose-based CSPs, Chiralpak AD-H and Lux Amylose-2. n-Hexane/2-propanol mixtures and pure ethanol were employed as mobile phases. The combined use of Chiralpak AD-H and Lux Cellulose-2 allowed to enantioseparate all the considered bipyridines. Ten bipyridines were enantioseparated at the multimilligram level allowing the elution sequence determination of the enantiomers as well as their future use for the preparation of homochiral metal organic frameworks (MOFs). Moreover, the performance of the CSPs regarding the same bipyridine was different and dependent on the backbone as well as on the side chain of the polymer. The impact of substitution pattern, shape and electronic properties of the molecules on the separation behavior was investigated through the evaluation of retention factors (k), separation factors (α), resolution (R(s)) and molecular properties determined using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In this regard, the substituents at the 3,3',5,5' positions of the 4,4'-bipyridyl rings exhibited a pivotal role on the enantioseparation.

Abstract
Readily synthesised and functionalised di-1,2,3-triazole "click" ligands are shown to self-assemble into coordinatively saturated, quadruply stranded helical [Pd(2)L(4)](BF(4))(4) cages with Pd(II) ions. The cages have been fully characterised by elemental analysis, HR-ESMS, IR, (1)H, (13)C and DOSY NMR, DFT calculations, and in one case by X-ray crystallography. By exploiting the CuAAC "click" reaction we were able to rapidly generate a small family of di-1,2,3-triazole ligands with different core spacer units and peripheral substituents and examine how these structural modifications affected the formation of the [Pd(2)L(4)](BF(4))(4) cages. The use of both flexible (1,3-propyl) and rigid (1,3-phenyl) core spacer units led to the formation of discrete [Pd(2)L(4)](BF(4))(4) cage complexes. However, when the spacer unit of the di-1,2,3-triazole ligand was a 1,4-substituted-phenyl group steric interactions led to the formation of an oligomeric/polymeric species. By keeping the 1,3-phenyl core spacer constant the effect of altering the "click" ligands' peripheral substituents was also examined. It was shown that ligands with alkyl, phenyl, electron-rich and electron-poor benzyl substituents all quantitatively formed [Pd(2)L(4)](BF(4))(4) cage complexes. The results suggest that a wide range of functionalised palladium(II) "click" cages could be rapidly generated. These novel molecules may potentially find uses in catalysis, molecular recognition and drug delivery.

Abstract
The new rigid fluorinated ligand 4,4'-bis(4-pyridyl)octafluorobiphenyl (L1) has been synthesized by a nucleophilic substitution reaction between the organolithium derivative of the 4-bromopyridine and the compound decafluorobiphenyl. The use of L1 as building block of supramolecular species containing diphosphane or ethylenediamine Pd(II) and Pt(II) fragments has been explored, and the results have been compared with those previously reported for the smaller ligand 1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)tetrafluorobenzene (L2). The observed differences (particularly, square/triangle ratio) are discussed in terms of different parameters such as the nature of the ancillary ligands, solvent, or reaction temperature. The synthesis of water-soluble palladium metallamacrocycles derived from L1 has been attempted using ethylenediamine (en) or tetramethylethylenediamine (tmen) as ancillary ligand. Interestingly, in the latter case, the resulting solutions of the compounds showed, together with the square/triangle equilibrium, the unexpected presence of an additional lower nuclearity species, whose nature has been determined by means of bidimensional (1)H NMR experiments.

Abstract
The 1:1 reaction of [W(CO)4(2-picoline)2] (1) with Ph2PCtriple bondC-Ctriple bondCPPh2 (2) led to {[cis-W(CO)4]2(µ-Ph2PC4PPh2)2} (3), in which two bis(diphenylphosphino)butadiyne ligands bridge two tetracarbonyltungsten centres. Reaction of 1 with excess 2 led to [cis-W(CO)4(Ph2PC4PPh2-κ1-P)2] (4), in which two dangling bis-phosphines are coordinated to one metal centre, and reaction of 2 with two equivalents of 1 led to {[W(2-picoline)(CO)4]2(µ-Ph2PC4PPh2)} (5), in which one ligand bridges two tungsten centres. Combination of 4 and 5 led to the trimeric complex {[cis-W(CO)4]3(µ-Ph2PC4PPh2)3} (6), in which three tetracarbonyltungsten centres are bridged by three bisdiphenylphosphinobutadiyne ligands. The dimeric complex 3 showed no reactivity towards alkyne cycloaddition; however, the trimeric complex 6 undergoes cycloaddition at moderate temperatures to form {[W(CO)4]3[µ3-C12(Ph2P)6]} (8), which contains a cyclododecatrienetriyene ring. Comparison of structural data for the template complexes 3 and 6, as well that of previously described platinum template complexes, suggests that alkyne cycloaddition reactions are favoured by proximity of the alkynyl carbons α to phosphorus in adjacent ligands.Key words: coordination chemistry, diyne, cycloaddition, templated reaction, tungsten.

Abstract
PGSE diffusion, 19F, 1H HOESY and 13C NMR studies for a series of [Ru(Cp*)(eta6-arene)][PF6] (1) salts are presented. The solid-state structure of [Ru(Cp*)(eta6-fluorobenzene)][PF6] (1 c) is reported. The extent of the ion pairing and the relative positions of the ions are shown to depend on the arene. For the solvent dichloromethane, new and literature PGSE data for PF6(-) salts of transition-metal, inorganic, and organic salts are compared. Taken together, these new results show that the charge distribution and the ability of the anion to approach the positively charged positions (steric effects due to molecular shape) are the determining factors in deciding the amount of ion pairing. DFT calculations of the charges in four salts of type 1, as well as in a variety of other salts, using a natural population analysis (NPA), support this view. This represents the first attempt, using experimental data, to understand, correlate, and partially explain the various degrees of ion pairing in a widely different collection of salts.
