Abstract
A series of four heterocyclic dimers has been synthesized, with twisted geometries imposed across the central linking bond by ortho-alkoxy chains. These include two isomeric bicarbazoles, a bis(dibenzothiophene-S,S-dioxide) and a bis(thioxanthene-S,S-dioxide). Spectroscopic and electrochemical methods, supported by density functional theory, have given detailed insights into how para- vs. meta- vs. broken conjugation, and electron-rich vs. electron-poor heterocycles impact the HOMO-LUMO gap and singlet and triplet energies. Crucially for applications as OLED hosts, the triplet energy (ET ) of these molecules was found to vary significantly between dilute polymer films and neat films, related to conformational demands of the molecules in the solid state. One of the bicarbazole species shows a variation in ET of 0.24 eV in the different media-sufficiently large to "make-or-break" an OLED device-with similar discrepancies found between neat films and frozen solution measurements of other previously reported OLED hosts. From consolidated optical and optoelectronic investigations of different host/dopant combinations, we identify that only the lower ET values measured in neat films give a reliable indicator of host/guest compatibility. This work also provides new molecular design rules for obtaining very high ET materials and controlling their HOMO and LUMO energies.

Abstract
Microwave formylation of carbazole derivatives was investigated and 3-monoaldehydes were obtained in high yield. A potential DNA-binding ligand, 3-[(3-ethyl)-2-vinylbenzothiazolium]-9-N-ethyl carbazole iodide, was synthesized and characterized including spectral properties (UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectra). The binding selectivity and affinity of three carbazole ligands for double-stranded and G-quadruplex DNA structures were studied using a competitive dialysis method in sodium- and potassium-containing buffer solutions.

Binding Study of the Fluorescent Carbazole Derivative with Human Telomeric G-Quadruplexes. Molecules 2018; 23:molecules23123154. Abstract
The carbazole ligand 3 was synthesized, characterized and its binding interactions with human telomeric (22HT) G-quadruplex DNA in Na+ and K+-containing buffer were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry, fluorescence, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, and DNA melting. The results showed that the studied carbazole ligand interacted and stabilized the intramolecular G-quadruplexes formed by the telomeric sequence in the presence of sodium and potassium ions. In the UV-Vis titration experiments a two-step complex formation between ligand and G-quadruplex was observed. Very low fluorescence intensity of the carbazole derivative in Tris HCl buffer in the presence of the NaCl or KCl increased significantly after addition of the 22HT G4 DNA. Binding stoichiometry of the ligand/G-quadruplex was investigated with absorbance-based Job plots. Carbazole ligand binds 22HT with about 2:1 stoichiometry in the presence of sodium and potassium ions. The binding mode appeared to be end-stacking with comparable binding constants of ~105 M−1 as determined from UV-Vis and fluorescence titrations data. The carbazole ligand is able to induce formation of G4 structure of 22HT in the absence of salt, which was proved by CD spectroscopy and melting studies. The derivative of carbazole 3 shows significantly higher cytotoxicity against breast cancer cells then for non-tumorigenic breast epithelial cells. The cytotoxic activity of ligand seems to be not associated with telomerase inhibition.

Abstract
The title compound, C38H40Br2N2, crystallizes in the triclinic space group P-1 with two mol-ecules in a unit cell. The two carbazole groups are nearly coplanar, making a dihedral angle of 16.90 (5)°, and are bridged by vinyl. The crystal structure features π-π and C-H⋯π inter-actions and C-H⋯Br short contacts.

Abstract
A novel boron-containing π-conjugated compound has been synthesized by the introduction of electron-acceptors (dimesitylboron groups) at the 3,3'-positions of a carbazole dimer (electron-donor). The compound possesses excellent electrochemical properties and high fluorescence quantum yields. In addition, is a sensitive fluorescence sensor with remarkable colour changes and the results could be confirmed through theoretical calculations of the compounds and [(n)Bu(4)N](+)(2)[·(F)(2)](2-). Our studies indicate that could be used as an excellent optoelectronic material in OLED devices and a ratiometric fluorescent chemosensor.

Abstract
Four novel fluorescence dyes of the pyrazoline were synthesized and fully characterized by means of (1)H, (13)C NMR, and HRMS. The optical, electrochemical properties were also investigated. Solvent effect on the fluorescence characteristics of the four compounds indicates that the emission wavelength was red-shifted with the increase of solvent polarity. As we expected, the results indicated that these compounds exhibited high quantum yields. Quantum chemical calculations were used to obtain optimized ground-state geometry, spatial distributions of the HOMO, LUMO levels of the compounds.

Abstract
A carbazole-based diaza[7]helicene, 2,12-dihexyl-2,12-diaza[7]helicene (1), was synthesized by a photochemical synthesis and its use as a deep-blue dopant emitter in an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) was examined. Compound 1 exhibited good solubility and excellent thermal stability with a high decomposition temperature (T(d)=372.1 °C) and a high glass-transition temperature (T(g), up to 203.0 °C). Single-crystal structural analysis of the crystalline clathrate (1)(2)⋅cyclohexane along with a theoretical investigation revealed a non-planar-fused structure of compound 1, which prevented the close-packing of molecules in the solid state and kept the molecule in a good amorphous state, which allowed the optimization of the properties of the OLED. A device with a structure of ITO/NPB (50 nm)/CBP:5 % 1 (30 nm)/BCP (20 nm)/Mg:Ag (100 nm)/Ag (50 nm) showed saturated blue light with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.15, 0.10); the maximum luminance efficiency and brightness were 0.22 cd A(-1) (0.09 Lm W(-1)) and 2365 cd m(-2), respectively. This new class of helicenes, based on carbazole frameworks, not only opens new possibilities for utilizing helicene derivatives in deep-blue-emitting OLEDs but may also have potential applications in many other fields, such as molecular recognition and organic nonlinear optical materials.

Abstract
A set of monodisperse 2,7-linked carbazole oligomers (3-mer, 5-mer, 7-mer, and 9-mer) was synthesized, and their photophysical, electrochemical, and thermal properties were investigated. In solutions, these oligomers exhibited bright blue emission with almost quantitative fluorescence quantum yield. The emission spectra of these oligomers in films are quite different. 3-Mer and 5-mer exhibited featureless emission spectra, whereas 7-mer and 9-mer showed well-resolved emission spectra.

Abstract
The selective synthesis of 1,2,3,4-tetrasubstituted carbazoles can be performed effectively through the palladium-catalyzed oxidative coupling reactions of N-substituted indoles or their carboxylic acid derivatives with alkynes. Unsymmetrically octasubstituted carbazoles can also be obtained by the stepwise couplings of 1-methylpyrrole-2-carboxylic acid with two different alkynes. In addition, the present coupling procedure is applicable to the synthesis of other various heteroarenes possessing di-, tri-, and tetracyclic cores. Some of the products exhibit intense fluorescence in the solid state.
