Abstract
The pre-transmetalation intermediates are critically important in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling (SMC) reactions and have become a hot spot of the current research. However, the pre-transmetalation intermediates under base-free conditions have not been clear. Herein, a comprehensive theoretical study is performed on the base-free Pd-catalyzed desulfonative SMC reaction. The fragile coordination feature and the acceleration role of the RuPhos chelate ligand are revealed. The hydrogen-bond complex between the Pd-F complex and aryl boronic acid is identified as an important pre-transmetalation intermediate, which increases the energy span to 32.5 kcal/mol. The controlling factor for the formation of the hydrogen-bond complexes is attributed to the electronegativities of halogen atoms in the metal halide complexes. What is more, other reported SMC reaction systems involving metal halide complexes and aryl boronic acids are reconsidered and suggest that the hydrogen-bond complexes widely exist as stable pre-transmetalation intermediates with influencing the catalytic activities. The earth-abundant Ni-catalyzed desulfonative SMC reaction is further designed and predicted to have a higher activity than the original Pd-catalyzed SMC reaction.

Abstract
The Suzuki-Miyaura reaction (the cross-coupling reaction of boronic acids with organic halides catalysed by Pd complexes) has been recognised as a useful synthetic organic reaction that forms a C(sp2)-C(sp2) bond. The catalytic cycle of the reaction involves the transmetalation of aryl- and alkenylboronic acids with Pd(II) complexes. It migrates the aryl and alkenyl groups of boronic acid to Pd and produces a Pd-C bond. Many studies have investigated the mechanism of transmetalation. They elucidated the mechanism of the organometallic reaction and its role as a fundamental step in catalytic reactions. This perspective reviews studies on the transmetalation of aryl- and alkenylboronic acids with Pd(II) complexes. Emphasis was laid on the structures and chemical properties of the intermediate Pd complexes and the effects of OH- on the pathways of the catalytic Suzuki-Miyaura reaction. The reactions of arylboronic acids with Rh(I)-OH complexes were investigated, which are relevant to the mechanism of Rh-catalysed addition of aryl boronic acids to enones and aldehydes. Recent studies on the transmetalation of boronic acids with other late transition metals such as Fe(II), Co(I), Pt(II), Au(III), and Au(I) are presented with the related catalytic reactions and their utilisation in the synthesis of aromatic molecules and π-conjugated materials.

Abstract
C-C cross coupling reactions have been widely used for developing synthesis protocols for pharmaceuticals and agricultural products in the past few decades. Of all the reported C-C cross coupling reactions, the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction is preferred because of its mild reaction conditions, the commercial availability of associated reagents and the ease of removal of boron containing by-products. Recently, Corma and co-workers [Leyva-Perez et al., Angew. Chem., 2013, 125, 11768] reported water-stabilized three- and four-atom Pd clusters as highly active catalytic species for C-C coupling reactions. The present work focuses on developing detailed mechanistic insights into the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction with Pd3 and Pd4 clusters utilizing density functional theory calculations. The role of the base in the reaction was analysed in this study, which was found to lower the activation barriers of transmetalation over both Pd3 and Pd4. Free energy landscapes for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of bromobenzene and phenylboronic acid over Pd3 and Pd4 clusters were developed. The highest free energy barriers of 34.7 and 30.4 kcal mol-1 were observed for the oxidative addition over Pd3 and Pd4, respectively, indicating the oxidative addition as the rate limiting step. Detailed energetics conclusively proved the active nature of small-atom Pd clusters for catalyzing the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction.

Abstract
Enantio- and diastereoselective conjunctive cross-coupling of β-substituted alkenylboron "ate" complexes is studied. Whereas β-substitution shifts the chemoselectivity of the catalytic reaction in favor of the Suzuki-Miyaura product, use of a boronic ester ligand derived from acenaphthoquinone allows the process to favor the conjunctive product, even with substituted substrates.

Abstract
A comprehensive DFT (M06-L-D3(SMD)/BS2//M06-L/BS1 level) investigation has been carried out to explore in detail the mechanism of the transmetalation and reductive elimination reactions of abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene (aNHC) palladium(IV) complexes within the framework of Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. Emphasis was placed on the role of base and the effect of countercations on the critical transmetalation and reductive elimination events involving palladium(IV) complexes. Of the two competing roles of the base, the route involving boronate formation followed by halide exchange prevails over that of direct halide exchange for the intermediates [PdIV (aNHC)(OMe)2 Cl]- Na+ (pathway A), [PdIV (aNHC)(OMe)(Cl)2 ]- Na+ (pathway B), and [PdIV (aNHC)Cl3 ]- Na+ (pathway C) emanating from the oxidative addition reaction. The results of the calculations are in accordance with our previous theoretical findings of favorable energetics for palladium intermediates incorporating two coordinated methoxy groups. The negative role played by the countercation in the transmetalation step is mainly due to the overstabilization of the pre-transmetalation intermediate, which is in line with experimental kinetic results. The anionic complexes exhibit greater affinity for the transmetalation and reductive elimination reactions than the neutral variants.

Abstract
The catalytic cycles of palladium-catalyzed silylation of aryl iodides, which are initiated by oxidative addition of hydrosilane or aryl iodide through three different mechanisms characterized by intermediates R3 Si-PdII -H (Cycle A), Ar-PdII -I (Cycle B), and PdIV (Cycle C), have been explored in detail by hybrid DFT. Calculations suggest that the chemical selectivity and reactivity of the reaction depend on the ligation state of the catalyst and specific reaction conditions, including feeding order of substrates and the presence of base. For less bulky biligated catalyst, Cycle C is energetically favored over Cycle A, through which the silylation process is slightly favored over the reduction process. Interestingly, for bulky monoligated catalyst, Cycle B is energetically more favored over generally accepted Cycle A, in which the silylation channel is slightly disfavored in comparison to that of the reduction channel. Moreover, the inclusion of base in this channel allows the silylated product become dominant. These findings offer a good explanation for the complex experimental observations. Designing a reaction process that allows the oxidative addition of palladium(0) complex to aryl iodide to occur prior to that with hydrosilane is thus suggested to improve the reactivity and chemoselectivity for the silylated product by encouraging the catalytic cycle to proceed through Cycles B (monoligated Pd0 catalyst) or C (biligated Pd0 catalyst), instead of Cycle A.

Abstract
The Suzuki-Miyaura reaction of 2,6-dichloro-3-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine with 1 equiv of arylboronic acids resulted in site-selective formation of 2-aryl-6-chloro-3-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine. Due to electronic reasons, the reaction takes place at the sterically more hindered position. The selectivity was rationalised by DFT calculations. The one-pot reaction with two different arylboronic acids afforded 2,6-diaryl-3-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine containing two different aryl substituents. The reactions proceeded smoothly in the absence of phosphine ligands. In addition, Suzuki-Miyaura reactions of 2,6-dichloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine with one or two equivalents of arylboronic acids were carried out.

Abstract
We investigated the oxidative addition of PhX (X = Cl, Br) to a single Pd(0) atom or a PdX- complex in water using first-principles molecular dynamics simulations, with solvent H2O molecules explicitly included in the calculation models, to clarify the origin of the extremely high reactivity of a ligand-free Pd catalyst in an aqueous solution for the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction. The free-energy profiles are estimated using blue moon ensemble sampling to include the entropy effect in chemical reactions in a water solvent. The free-energy barrier of the oxidative addition step is quite low for PhBr, whereas the barrier for PhCl is sizable, indicating that the reaction can proceed at room temperature with a high rate for PhBr but a rather low rate for PhCl. We also investigated the effect of the additional halogen anion on the Pd catalyst as a "supporting ligand". The activation barrier of the oxidative addition step is not affected by the supporting halogen ligand, but the final state is significantly destabilized, which should be important for the following transmetalation step. The solvent effect has also been investigated and discussed.

Abstract
In this manuscript, we investigate two plausible pathways for addition of H₂ across the bond Ta=C in η⁵-(C₅H₅)₂Ta(H)=CH₂. One of the investigated reaction pathways involves a single concerted step with a four-membered transition state keeping the oxidation state of tantalum unaltered, where as the other pathway deals with a two step reaction with α-insertion of H₂ to produce a 16e⁻ Ta(III)-methyl species and a subsequent oxidative addition. We must emphasize that an experimental study by Bregel et al. [J Am Chem Soc 2002, 124:13827-13832] on a derivative of the investigated chemical system in the present study showed that the two step strategy of α-insertion followed by subsequent oxidative addition is the preferred one. Our numerical investigations using DFT and AIM calculations lead to a similar conclusion. To establish our conclusion, we employ various basis sets to obtain the free energy of activation of the reaction. The AIM technique especially helps us to characterize the bond critical points at the optimized geometries of the reactants, products, transition states, and intermediates for the two step mechanism.

Abstract
The formation of an atypical, saturated, diarylated, Heck/Suzuki, domino product produced under oxidative Heck reaction conditions, employing arylboronic acids and a chelating vinyl ether, has been investigated by DFT calculations. The calculations highlight the crucial role of 1,4-benzoquinone (BQ) in the reaction. In addition to its role as an oxidant of palladium, which is necessary to complete the catalytic cycle, this electron-deficient alkene opens up a low-energy reaction pathway from the post-insertion σ-alkyl complex. The association of BQ lowers the free-energy barrier for transmetallation of the σ-alkyl complex to create a pathway that is energetically lower than the oxidative Heck reaction pathway. Furthermore, the calculations showed that the reaction is made viable by BQ-mediated reductive elimination and leads to the saturated diarylated product.

Abstract
The first Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of the synthetically versatile aryl O-carbamate and O-sulfamate groups are described. The transformations utilize the inexpensive, bench-stable catalyst NiCl(2)(PCy(3))(2) to furnish biaryls in good to excellent yields. A broad scope for this methodology has been demonstrated. Substrates with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups are tolerated, in addition to those that possess ortho substituents. Furthermore, heteroaryl substrates may be employed as coupling partners. A computational study providing the full catalytic cycles for these cross-coupling reactions is described. The oxidative addition with carbamates or sulfamates occurs via a five-centered transition state, resulting in the exclusive cleavage of the aryl C-O bond. Water is found to stabilize the Ni-carbamate catalyst resting state, which thus provides rationalization of the relative decreased rate of coupling of carbamates. Several synthetic applications are presented to showcase the utility of the methodology in the synthesis of polysubstituted aromatic compounds of natural product and bioactive molecule interest.
