Abstract
The copper-catalyzed enantioselective allylation reaction of N-aryl aldimines has been developed using a combination of Cu(OAc)2 and SPINOL-based phosphonamidite. This protocol significantly broadens the substrate scope, such that imines bearing various ortho-substituents on the N-aryl were converted smoothly into homoallylic amines in up to 99% yield and 98% ee. Taking advantage of the diversity of the N-aryl motif, three kinds of N-heterocyclic compounds were constructed, respectively, from the corresponding homoallylic amines in merely one step.

Abstract
A highly diastereo- and enantioselective allylation of isatins with 3-substituted allylboronic compounds was achieved by the chiral N,N'-dioxide/Lu(OTf)3 complex. This approach provides an efficient route to useful enantioenriched 3-allyl-3-hydroxyoxindoles with adjacent tetrasubstituted tertiary or tetrasubstituted quaternary stereogenic centers. Density functional theory calculations were performed to understand the different diastereoselection between the background reaction and catalytic process. Moreover, allylation with potassium allyltrifluoroborate was accomplished by the chiral N,N'-dioxide/In(OTf)3 complex. The synthetic utility was demonstrated by further transformation of the product to a tetrahydrofuranyl oxindole derivative.

Abstract
We report a one-step catalytic, enantioselective method for the preparation of homoallylic N-Boc amines directly from acetals. Reactive iminium ion intermediates are generated in situ through the combination of an acetal, a chiral thiourea catalyst, trialkylsilyl triflate, and N-Boc carbamate and are subsequently trapped by a variety of allylsilane nucleophiles. No homoallylic ether byproducts are detected, consistent with allylation of the iminium intermediate being highly favored over allylation of the intermediate oxocarbenium ion. Acetals derived from aromatic aldehydes possessing a variety of functional groups and substitution patterns yield homoallylic amines with excellent levels of enantiomeric enrichment. Experimental and computational data are consistent with an anchoring hydrogen-bond interaction between the protioiminium ion and the amide of the catalyst in the enantiodetermining transition state, and with stereodifferentiation achieved through specific noncovalent interactions (NCIs) with the catalyst pyrenyl moiety. Evidence is provided that the key NCI in the major pathway is a π-stacking interaction, contrasting with the cation-π interactions invoked in previously studied reactions promoted by the same family of aryl-pyrrolidino-H-bond-donor catalysts.

Abstract
Organocatalysis has emerged as a powerful synthetic tool in organic chemistry in the last few decades. Among various classes of organocatalysis, chiral diol-based scaffolds, such as BINOLs, VANOLs, and tartaric acid derivatives, have been widely used to induce enantioselectivity due to the ability of the hydroxyls to coordinate with the Lewis acidic sites of reagents or substrates and create a chiral environment for the transformation. In this review, we will discuss the applications of these diol-based catalysts in different types of reactions, including the scopes of reactions and the modes of catalyst activation. In general, the axially chiral aryl diol BINOL and VANOL derivatives serve as the most competent catalyst for most examples, but examples of exclusive success using other scaffolds, herein, suggests that they should not be overlooked. Lastly, the examples, to date, are mainly from tartrate and biaryl diol catalysts, suggesting that innovation may be available from new diol scaffolds.

Abstract
The rapid assembly of molecular complexity continues to be at the forefront of novel reaction development. In the pursuit of that goal, we herein report a novel Sc(OTf)3 -catalyzed, one-pot multicomponent reaction that furnishes complex multicyclic 2-pyrrolines with excellent overall yields and perfect diastereocontrol. This process is based on our previously established (2+2+1)-cycloannulation of in situ generated 1-azaallyl cations, 1,3-dicarbonyls and primary amines. The newly formed and highly reactive aminal moiety is readily substituted with indoles and pyrroles both as external and internal π-nucleophiles to provide densely functionalized N-heterocycles with four new σ-bonds and two vicinal quaternary stereogenic centers. In addition, DFT calculations have been conducted to further characterize the intermediate 1-azaallyl cations.

Abstract
Chiral biphenols catalyze the asymmetric Petasis borono-Mannich allylation of aldehydes and amines through the use of a bench-stable allyldioxaborolane. The reaction proceeds via a two-step, one-pot process and requires 2-8 mole % of 3,3'-Ph2 -BINOL as the optimal catalyst. Under microwave heating the reaction affords chiral homoallylic amines in excellent yields (up to 99 %) and high enantioselectivies (er up to 99:1). The catalytic reaction is a true multicomponent condensation reaction whereas both the aldehyde and the amine can possess a wide range of structural and electronic properties. Use of crotyldioxaborolane in the reaction results in stereodivergent products with anti- and syn-diastereomers both in good diastereoselectivities and enantioselectivities from the corresponding E- and Z-borolane stereoisomers.

Abstract
Homochiral catalysts that can effect asymmetric transformations are invaluable in the production of optically active molecules. Researchers are actively pursuing the design of new ligands and organocatalysts by exploiting concepts derived from the application of bifunctional and C(2)-symmetric catalysts. Many homochiral catalysts containing amines, ethers, alcohols, and phosphines as electron-pair donors have been successfully developed. Amine N-oxides are highly polar substances. Despite their pronounced capacity as electron-pair donors, N-oxides have been underutilized in asymmetric reactions; they have only made a visible impact on the field in the preceding decade. Systematic studies have instead largely focused on pyridine- or quinoline-based scaffolds in organosilicon and coordination chemistry. The application of chiral tertiary amine N-oxides has not been widely pursued because of the difficulty of controlling the chirality at the tetrahedral nitrogen of the N-oxide moiety. In this Account, we outline the design of a new family of C(2)-symmetric N,N'-dioxides from readily available chiral amino acids. We then discuss the application of these chiral amine N-oxides as useful metal ligands and organocatalysts for asymmetric reactions. The high nucleophilicity of the oxygen in N-oxides is ideal for organocatalytic reactions that rely on nucleophilic activation of organosilicon reagents. These catalysts have been successfully applied in the asymmetric addition of trimethylsilylcyanide to aldehydes, ketones, aldimines, and ketimines, with good yields and excellent enantioselectivities. Asymmetric organocatalytic chlorination of β-ketoesters with N-chlorosuccinimide has also been achieved through hydrogen bond activation. The molecular framework of these N,N'-dioxides, with their multiple O-donors, also serves as a new tetradentate ligand that can coordinate a range of metal ions, including Cu(I), Cu(II), Ni(II), Mg(II), Fe(II), Co(II), In(III), Sc(III), La(III), Y(III), Nd(III), and others. These versatile metal complexes are efficient catalysts for a variety of asymmetric reactions. Asymmetric cycloadditions have been achieved with these chiral Lewis acid catalysts. We have also found success with asymmetric nucleophilic additions to C═O or C═N bonds; substrates include 3-substituted 2-oxindoles, alkenes, enamides, enecarbamates, diazoacetate esters, nitroalkanes, glycine Schiff bases, and phosphate. Notably, the first catalytic asymmetric Roskamp reaction was realized, which was successful because of the high efficiency of the catalyst. Asymmetric conjugate additions between α,β-unsaturated compounds and nucleophiles such as nitroalkane, malonate, thioglycolate, and indoles have been accomplished. The first asymmetric haloamination of chalcones was discovered, and the reaction proceeded with high regio- and enantioselectivity. In some cases, we were able to reduce the catalyst loading to just 0.01-0.05 mol % while maintaining excellent outcomes. Some particularly interesting phenomena were observed over the course of the research. These include a remarkable amplification of the asymmetry in a sulfa-Michael reaction, as well as the reversal of enantioselectivity after alteration of the central metal or the subunits of the ligand in two other reactions. These unusual results have facilitated a deeper understanding of the catalytic mechanism.

Abstract
Highly enantioselective carbonyl-ene reaction of glyoxal derivatives and glyoxylate with various alkenes was accomplished using a novel nickel(II)-N,N'-dioxide complex under mild conditions, which facilitated the asymmetric synthesis of biologically interesting alpha-hydroxy carbonyl compounds. Various aromatic, aliphatic, and heteroaromatic glyoxal derivatives, as well as glyoxylate, could be tolerated in this system and afforded the corresponding adducts in excellent enantioselectivities (97->99% ee) with high yields. Moreover, the catalyst loading could even be decreased to 1 mol%, while the enantioselectivity was basically maintained.
