Breakdown of Langmuir Adsorption Isotherm in Small Closed Systems

For more than a century, monolayer adsorptions in which adsorbate molecules and adsorbing sites behave ideally have been successfully described by Langmuir's adsorption isotherm. For example, the amount of adsorbed material, as a function of concentration of the material which is not adsorbed, obeys Langmuir's equation. In this paper, we argue that this relation is valid only for macroscopic systems. However, when particle numbers of adsorbate molecules and/or adsorbing sites are small, Langmuir's model fails to describe the chemical equilibrium of the system. This is because the kinetics of forming, or the probability of observing, occupied sites arises from two-body interactions, and as such, ought to include cross-correlations between particle numbers of the adsorbate and adsorbing sites. The effect of these correlations, as reflected by deviations in predicting composition when correlations are ignored, increases with decreasing particle numbers and becomes substantial when only few adsorbate molecules, or adsorbing sites, are present in the system. In addition, any change that augments the fraction of occupied sites at equilibrium (e.g., smaller volume, lower temperature, or stronger adsorption energy) further increases the discrepancy between observed properties of small systems and those predicted by Langmuir's theory. In contrast, for large systems, these cross-correlations become negligible, and therefore when expressing properties involving two-body processes, it is possible to consider independently the concentration of each component. By applying statistical mechanics concepts, we derive a general expression of the equilibrium constant for adsorption. It is also demonstrated that in ensembles in which total numbers of particles are fixed, the magnitudes of fluctuations in particle numbers alone can predict the average chemical composition of the system. Moreover, an alternative adsorption equation, predicting the average fraction of occupied sites from the value of the equilibrium constant, is proposed. All derived relations were tested against results obtained by Monte Carlo simulations.

How Key Alterations of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles Affect Anti-Lung Cancer Therapy? A Comprehensive Review of the Literature

In 2020, there were 2.21 million new instances of lung cancer, making it the top cause of mortality globally, responsible for close to 10 million deaths. The physicochemical problems of chemotherapy drugs are the primary challenge that now causes a drug's low effectiveness. Solubility is a physicochemical factor that has a significant impact on a drug's biopharmaceutical properties, starting with the rate at which it dissolves and extending through how well it is absorbed and bioavailable. One of the most well-known methods for addressing a drug's solubility is mesoporous silica, which has undergone excellent development due to the conjugation of polymers and ligands that increase its effectiveness. However, there are still very few papers addressing the success of this discovery, particularly those addressing its molecular pharmaceutics and mechanism. Our study's objectives were to explore and summarize the effects of targeting mediator on drug development using mesoporous silica with and without functionalized polymer. We specifically focused on highlighting the molecular pharmaceutics and mechanism in this study's innovative findings. Journals from the Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases that were released during the last ten years were used to compile this review. According to inclusion and exclusion standards adjusted. This improved approach produced very impressive results, a very significant change in the characteristics of mesoporous silica that can affect effectiveness. Mesoporous silica approaches have the capacity to greatly enhance a drug's physicochemical issues, boost therapeutic efficacy, and acquire superb features.

Structure and Stability of Gas Adsorption Complexes in Periodic Porous Solids as Studied by VTIR Spectroscopy: An Overview

Variable-temperature infrared (VTIR) spectroscopy is an instrumental technique that enables structural characterization of gas-solid adsorption complexes by analysis of meaningful vibrational modes, and simultaneous determination of the standard enthalpy change (ΔH0) involved in the gas adsorption process, which allows one to quantify the stability of the corresponding complex. This is achieved by a van’t Hoff analysis of a set of IR spectra recorded over a sufficiently large temperature range. Herein, the use of this versatile spectroscopic technique is demonstrated by reviewing its application to the study of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and dinitrogen adsorption on several (alkaline) zeolites, which can be regarded as the archetype of periodic porous solids.

Adsorption under nanoconfinement: a theoretical-computational study revealing significant enhancement beyond the Langmuirian levels

The principal goal of this work is to predict characteristics unique to equilibrated adsorption of a small number of molecules on atomic sites located inside a closed nanoscale space. Compared to the thermodynamic limit of macroscopic systems, significantly enlarged adsorbate coverage under nanoconfinement constitutes a major finding of the modeling. Concomitantly, nanoconfined adsorbates are expected to exhibit extra thermal stability against desorption. These effects on adsorption are explored using canonical partition-functions as well as an original relationship between coverage variations and the Langmuir constant, both in the frameworks of the ideal gas and lattice-gas models. With reported DFT adsorption-energies as input, adsorption isotherms are derived numerically for H2 on Ti-doped graphene-like nanostructures. Remarkable deviations from the classical Langmuir isotherm are predicted for the first time, namely, system-size dependent enhanced H2 adsorbate coverage. The effects are computed also for CO2 inside MOF single-molecule traps, including their relationships to adsorption-energy, specific-heat and to coverage fluctuations. According to preliminary modeling, nanoconfinement effects are anticipated also for adsorption in nanopores undergoing molecular exchange with the external environment, and for impurity segregation in nanoparticle and nanocrystalline solids. The entropic origin of the nanoconfinement effect on equilibrium adsorption (NCEEA) is demonstrated analogously to the nanoconfinement effect on equilibrated chemical reactions studied by us previously. Besides unraveling some basic theoretical issues in physical nanochemistry, this study is expected to be pertinent to nanotechnological applications, such as gas storage and separation in nanoporous materials and other solid adsorbents.

Stochastic or Not? Method To Predict and Quantify the Stochastic Effects on the Association Reaction Equilibria in Nanoscopic Systems

The stochastic nature of chemical reaction and impact of the stochasticity on their evolution is soundly documented. Both theoretical predictions and emerging experimental evidence indicate the influence of stochastic effects on the equilibrium state of association reaction. In this work simple mathematical formulas are introduced to estimate these effects. First, the dependence of the ratio of observed reactants (apparent association constant, equivalent of macroscopic association constant in stochastic analysis) on the volume and the number of molecules of reagents is discussed and the limiting factors of this effect are shown. Next, the apparent association constant is approximated for nanoscale systems by closed-form formulas derived for this purpose. Finally, an estimation for the macroscopic constant value from the apparent one is provided and validated on the published experimental data. This work was inspired by chemical reactions occurring in biological compartments, but the results can be used for all systems belonging to the stochastic regime of chemical reactions.

Distribution Control-Oriented Intercalation of a Cationic Metal Complex into Layered Silicates Modified with Organosulfonic-Acid Moieties

A layered sodium silicate, octosilicate (Na₂Si₈O₁₇· nH₂O), was modified with an organosulfonic-acid moiety (sulfonated propyl (SPr) group, sulfonated phenethyl (SPhE) group, or sulfonated p-trifluoromethylphenyl (STFPh) group) for use as a host material to accommodate a cationic guest, tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) cation ([Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺). The organosulfonic-acid moiety was bound to the silicate layer via a reaction of an alkylammonium-exchanged octosilicate with a silane coupling agent, and subsequent treatment (oxidation or sulfonation) of the bound organosilyl groups; the surface densities of the organosulfonic-acid moiety were varied by controlling the added amount of silane coupling agents. Adsorption of [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺ onto surface-modified octosilicates was conducted to find that some surface-modified octosilicates successfully adsorbed [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺ in the interlayer space (intercalation), while other surface-modified octosiliates did not. In addition, the UV-vis absorption and the luminescence indicate that intercalated [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺ diffused in the interlayer and that the distribution of the time-averaged location varied depending on the kind and amount of the organosulfonic-acid moieties. Thus, the kind and surface density of the organosulfonic-acid moiety, which correlates to the interactions between the group and the guest species, the volume of free nanospace for adsorption and motion of guests, and the swelling properties, are the key factors not only for the intercalation ability but also for the dynamics of the guest in the interlayer space.

Negative and Positive Confinement Effects in Chiral Separation Chromatography Monitored with Molecular-Scale Precision by In-Situ Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Techniques

Separation of compounds using liquid chromatography is a process of enormous technological importance. This is true in particular for chiral substances, when one enantiomer has the desired set of properties and the other one may be harmful. The degree of development in liquid chromatography is extremely high, but still there is a lack in understanding based on experimental data how selectivity works on a molecular level directly at the surfaces of a porous host material. We have prepared amino-acid containing organosilica as such host materials. Watching the rotational dynamics of chiral spin probes using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy allows us to differentiate between surface adsorbed and free guest species. Diastereotopic selectivity factors were determined, and the influence of chiral surface group density, chemical character of the surface groups, pore-size, and temperature was investigated. We found higher selectivity values in macroporous solids with a rather rigid organosilica network and at lower temperature, indicating the significant effect of confinement effects. In mesoporous materials features are opposed with regards to the T-dependent behavior. From EPR imaging techniques and the resulting (macroscopic) diffusion coefficients, we could confirm that the correlations found on the microscopic level transform also to the macroscopic behavior. Thus, our study is of value for the development of future chromatography materials by design.

Mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles containing superacid and click functionalities leading to cooperativity in biocidal coatings

A superior degree of functionality in materials can be expected, if two or more operational entities are related in a cooperative form. It is obvious that, for this purpose, one is seeking materials with complex design comprising bi- or multiple functional groups complementing each other. In the current paper, it is demonstrated that periodically ordered mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) based on co-condensation of sol-gel precursors with bridging phenyl derivatives RF1,2C6H3[Si(O(iso)Pr)3]2 allow for rich opportunities in providing high-surface area materials with such a special chemical architecture. PMOs containing high density of thiol (≅ RF1) and sulfonic acid units (≅ RF2) were prepared as mesoporous nanoparticles via an aerosol-assisted gas-phase method and were tested for biocidal applications. Each of the mentioned organic groups fulfills several tasks at once. The selective functionalization of thiols located at the surface of the particles using click chemistry leads to durable grafting on different substrates like glass or stainless steel, and the intraparticle -SH groups are important regarding the uptake of metal ions like Ag(+) and for immobilization of Ag(0) nanoparticles inside the pores as an enduring reservoir for antibacterial force. The superacidic sulfonic acid groups exhibit a strong and instantaneous biocidal acitivity, and they are important for adjusting the Ag(+) release rate. Biological studies involving inhibitory investigation tests (MIC), fluorescence microscopy (life/dead staining), and bacterial adhesion tests with Pseudomonas aeruginosa show that the organobifunctional materials present much better performance against biofilm formation compared to materials containing only one of the above-mentioned groups.

Bolaform surfactants with polyoxometalate head groups and their assembly into ultra-small monolayer membrane vesicles

Surfactants are indispensable in established technologies as detergents or emulsification agents, and also in recent studies for controlling the growth of nanoparticles or for creating nanocarriers. Although the properties of conventional, organic surfactants are thoroughly explored, strong interest persists in surfactants that possess unique features inaccessible for ordinary systems. Here we present dipolar, bolaform surfactants with a head group comprising of 11 tungsten atoms. These novel compounds are characterized by an exceptionally low critical self-organization concentration, which leads to monolayer vesicles with a diameter of only 15 nm, that is, substantially smaller than for any other system. The membrane of the vesicles is impermeable for water-soluble and oil-soluble guests. Control over release kinetics, which can be followed via the quantitative fluorescence quenching of confined fluorophores, is gained by means of pH adjustments.

The intrinsic role of nanoconfinement in chemical equilibrium: evidence from DNA hybridization

Recently we predicted that when a reaction involving a small number of molecules occurs in a nanometric-scale domain entirely segregated from the surrounding media, the nanoconfinement can shift the position of equilibrium toward products via reactant-product reduced mixing. In this Letter, we demonstrate how most-recently reported single-molecule fluorescence measurements of partial hybridization of ssDNA confined within nanofabricated chambers provide the first experimental confirmation of this entropic nanoconfinement effect. Thus, focusing separately on each occupancy-specific equilibrium constant, quantitatively reveals extra stabilization of the product upon decreasing the chamber occupancy or size. Namely, the DNA hybridization under nanoconfined conditions is significantly favored over the identical reaction occurring in bulk media with the same reactant concentrations. This effect, now directly verified for DNA, can be relevant to actual biological processes, as well as to diverse reactions occurring within molecular capsules, nanotubes, and other functional nanospaces.

Remarkable nanoconfinement effects on chemical equilibrium manifested in nucleotide dimerization and H-D exchange reactions

Nanoconfinement entropic effects on chemical equilibrium involving a small number of molecules, which we term NCECE, are revealed by two widely diverse types of reactions. Employing statistical-mechanical principles, we show how the NCECE effect stabilizes nucleotide dimerization observed within self-assembled molecular cages. Furthermore, the effect provides the basis for dimerization even under an aqueous environment inside the nanocage. Likewise, the NCECE effect is pertinent to a longstanding issue in astrochemistry, namely the extra deuteration commonly observed for molecules reacting on interstellar dust grain surfaces. The origin of the NCECE effect is elucidated by means of the probability distributions of the reaction extent and related variations in the reactant-product mixing entropy. Theoretical modelling beyond our previous preliminary work highlights the role of the nanospace size in addition to that of the nanosystem size, namely the limited amount of molecules in the reaction mixture. Furthermore, the NCECE effect can depend also on the reaction mechanism, and on deviations from stoichiometry. The NCECE effect, leading to enhanced, greatly variable equilibrium "constants", constitutes a unique physical-chemical phenomenon, distinguished from the usual thermodynamical properties of macroscopically large systems. Being significant particularly for weakly exothermic reactions, the effects should stabilize products in other closed nanoscale structures, and thus can have notable implications for the growing nanotechnological utilization of chemical syntheses conducted within confined nanoreactors.

Pyrolysis of phenethyl phenyl ether tethered in mesoporous silica. Effects of confinement and surface spacer molecules on product selectivity

There has been expanding interest in exploring porous metal oxides as a confining environment for organic molecules resulting in altered chemical and physical properties including chemical transformations. In this paper, we examine the pyrolysis behavior of phenethyl phenyl ether (PPE) confined in mesoporous silica by covalent tethers to the pore walls as a function of tether density and the presence of cotethered surface spacer molecules of varying structure (biphenyl, naphthyl, octyl, and hexadecyl). The PPE pyrolysis product selectivity, which is determined by two competitive free-radical pathways cycling through the two aliphatic radical intermediates (PhCH·CH(2)OPh and PhCH(2)CH·OPh), is shown to be significantly different from that measured in the liquid phase as well as for PPE tethered to the exterior surface of nonporous silica nanoparticles. Tailoring the pore surface with spacer molecules further alters the selectivity such that the PPE reaction channel involving a molecular rearrangement (O-C phenyl shift in PhCH(2)CH·OPh), which accounts for 25% of the products in the liquid phase, can be virtually eliminated under pore confinement conditions. The origin of this change in selectivity is discussed in the context of steric constraints on the rearrangement path inside the pores, surface and pore confinement effects, pore surface curvature, and hydrogen bonding of PPE with residual surface silanols supplemented by nitrogen physisorption data and molecular dynamics simulations.

Adsorption in periodically ordered mesoporous organosilica materials studied by in situ small-angle X-ray scattering and small-angle neutron scattering

Modified periodically ordered mesoporous organosilica materials were prepared starting from a recently introduced type of sol-gel precursor, containing both organic moieties and hydrolyzable Si-OR groups. In order to thoroughly characterize the mesoporosity and its accessibility, different probe gases were used in conventional gas adsorption experiments. Furthermore, in situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) were applied to study the mesoporosity and the sorption processes, taking advantage of scattering contrast matching conditions. Thereby, the materials were characterized not only by different probe molecules but also at different temperatures (nitrogen at 77 K, dibromomethane at 290 K and perfluoropentane at 276 K). The comparison between the standard and in situ SAXS/SANS adsorption experiments revealed valuable information about the porosity and microstructure of the materials. It is demonstrated that the organic moieties are homogeneously distributed; that is, they do not phase-separate from silica on the nanometer scale.
