Abstract

Diareno[a,e]cyclooctatetraenes
find widespread applications as building blocks, ligands, and responsive
cores in topologically switchable materials. However, current synthetic
methods to these structures suffer from low yields or operational
disadvantages. Here, we describe a practical three-step approach to
diareno[a,e]cyclooctatetraenes using
an efficient copper(I) catalyzed double decarboxylation as the key
step. The sequence relies on cheap and abundant reagents, is readily
performed on scale, and is amenable also to unsymmetrical derivatives
that expand the utility of this intriguing class of structures.

Abstract
Overcrowded ethylenes composed of 10-methyleneanthrone and two bulky aromatic rings contain a twisted carbon-carbon double (C=C) bond as well as a folded anthrone unit. As such, they are unique frustrated aromatic enes (FAEs). Various colored crystals of these FAEs, obtained in different solvents, correspond to multiple metastable conformations of the FAEs with various twist and fold angles of the C=C bond, as well as various dihedral angles of attached aryl units with respect to the C=C bond. The relationships between color and these parameters associated with conformational features around the C=C bond were elucidated in experimental and computational studies. Owing to the fact that they are separated by small energy barriers, the variously colored conformations in the FAE crystal change in response to various external stimuli, such as mechanical grinding, hydrostatic pressure and thermal heating.

Abstract
![]()
A novel tandem Ru-catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition of arylenynes
to dihydrobiphenylenes followed by halogen-radical ring opening has
been developed for the construction of tub-shaped halogenated benzocyclooctatetraenes
(bCOT’s). Cross-couplings and Diels–Alder reactions
of the brominated bCOT’s allow the formation of the corresponding
eight-membered ring-fused PAH’s. The halogen-radical ring opening
probably occurs via a selective formation of a bis-allyl radical at
the 1,3-cyclohexadiene moiety, halogenation at the bridgehead carbon,
and finally electrocyclic ring opening.

Abstract
Noncovalent interactions are an integral part of the modern catalysis toolbox. Although stronger noncovalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding are commonly the main driving force of catalysis, π-π interactions typically provide smaller additional stabilizations, for example, to afford selectivity enhancements. Here, it is shown computationally that pristine graphene flakes may efficiently catalyze the skeletal inversions of various benzannulated cyclooctatetraene derivatives, providing an example of a catalytic process driven solely by π-π stacking interactions. Hereby, the catalytic effect results from disproportionate shape complementarity between catalyst and transition structure compared with catalyst and reactant. An energy decomposition analysis reveals electrostatic and, especially with increasing system size, to a larger extent, dispersion interactions as the origin of stabilization.

Abstract
An atom-economic Pd(ii)-catalysed cascade cyclisation of 2-(biphenylethynyl)anilines tethered to an aldehyde or cyano group leads to the formation of dibenzo[5,6:7,8]cycloocta[1,2-b]indol-10-ols 6 or dibenzo[5,6:7,8]cycloocta[1,2-b]indol-10(15H)-ones 8 with high yields (up to 95%). The reaction proceeds via amino-palladation of the alkyne followed by nucleophilic addition onto the aldehyde/cyano group. Treatment of 6 with p-TsOH·H2O smoothly provided cyclooctatetraene (COT) derivatives 7.

Abstract
The chiral, triangular-shape hexaimine macrocycles (trianglimines), bearing bulky alkynyl or aryl substituents were synthesized and studied by means of experimental and theoretical methods. The macrocyclization reactions are driven by the extraordinary stability of the trianglimine ring and provided products with high yields. Electrostatic repulsion between imine nitrogen atoms and the substituents forced an anti conformation of the aromatic linkers. Although the DFT-optimized structure of 7 is D3 symmetrical, in the crystal, the macrocycle adopts a bowl-like molecular shape. The macrocycle self-assembles into tail-to-tail dimers by mutual interdigitation of aromatic moieties. In contrast, macrocycle 8 adopts a rigid pillararene-like conformation. The nature of the substituent significantly affects the electronic properties of the linker. As a result, unexpectedly high exciton Cotton effects are observed in the electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. The origin of these effects was subject of an in-depth study.

Abstract
A new strategy to design new molecules based on a fused hydrocarbon ring system comprising a COT ring and two 5-membered rings has been proposed for the study of second order NLO properties. The four charge transferring groups -NR2 (R = H, Li, Na and K) in conjunction with a sufficient number of electron withdrawing groups lead to significant variation of structural parameters and polarity. The charge transfer characteristics can be strongly modulated by introducing calcium metal atoms at suitable sites. Ca metal atoms end-capping the nitrogen ends of two adjacent -CN groups lead to electride character while a Ca metal atom bonded directly to the COT ring leads to greater charge transfer. The size of the alkali metal atom has been found to have a dramatic effect on the enhancement of first hyperpolarizability. The most significant electronic asymmetry induced by the larger potassium metal atom strongly enhances the magnitude of first hyperpolarizability. The variation of first hyperpolarizability has been satisfactorily explained in terms of TD-CAMB3LYP calculated spectroscopic parameters in light of the two-state model.

Abstract
We present a joint theoretical and experimental study of a series of cyclic indole tetramers aimed at understanding the fundamental electronic properties of this 3D platform and evaluating its potential in the construction of new semiconductors. To this end, we combined absorption and Raman spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and spectroelectrochemistry with DFT calculations. Our results suggest that this platform can be easily and reversibly oxidized. Additionally, it has a HOMO that matches very well with the workfunction of gold, therefore charge injection from a gold electrode is expected to occur without significant barriers. Interestingly, the cyclic tetraindoles allow for good electron delocalization in spite of their saddle-shaped structures. The steric constraints introduced by N-substitution significantly inhibits ring inversion of the central cyclooctatetraene unit, whereas it only barely affects the optical and electrochemical properties (a slightly higher oxidation potential and a blueshifted absorption upon alkylation are observed).

Abstract
This article describes bent π-conjugated systems composed of alternating o-phenylene and Z-vinylene units. all-Z-[n]Benzo[4n]annulenes are higher homologues of dibenzocyclooctatetraene (DBCOT) with a concave π system, and attempts were made to convert [20]- and [24]annulenes having partial belt structures of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes into [10]- and [12]phenacenes. A bent π-conjugated system composed of two DBCOT units showed dynamic syn-anti equilibrium in solution and behaved as dynamic molecular tweezers (DMTs). The syn isomers of the DMTs formed blue charge-transfer complexes with DDQ in solution, and this complexation and color change were applied to thermochromism. Furthermore, DMTs having two CN groups on each COT ring exhibited crystalline-state emission in the presence of solvent molecules, although almost no emission was observed in solution or the solid state. Based on this crystalline-state emission, a vapochromic system was established. The multifunctional properties of DMTs caused by the flexibility of the nonplanar π system are summarized.

Abstract
4,6-Bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-alkylpyrimidines with two anthryl or 9-ethylnylanthryl substituents at the positions para to the OH groups prefer a U-shaped conformation supported by two intramolecular OH⋅⋅⋅N hydrogen bonds in the solid state and in CDCl3 solution. The compound with a hexyl substituent on the pyrimidine group and two 9-ethynylanthryl arms at the hydroxyphenyl groups forms a 1:1 complex with 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone. Its association constant K(a) was estimated to be 2100 M(-1) at 298 K, which is larger than those of other molecular tweezers (K(a) < 1000 M(-1)). DFT calculations suggested that the complex adopts a stable conformation supported by intramolecular hydrogen bonds among the OH groups and the pyrimidine ring as well as by intermolecular π-π interaction between the anthryl groups and 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone. Addition of nBu4NF to a solution of the molecular tweezers or their complexes causes the cleavage of one or two OH⋅⋅⋅N hydrogen bonds, formation of new O⋅⋅⋅HF hydrogen bonds, and changes in the molecular conformation. The resulting structure of the molecular tweezers contains nonparallel anthryl groups, which do not bind the guest molecule. Photochemical measurements on 4,6-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-methylpyrimidine with two anthryl substituents showed negligible luminescence (quantum yield ϕ<0.01), owing to photoinduced electron transfer of the molecule with a U-shaped structure. However, the O-hexylated compound exhibits emission from the anthryl groups with ϕ=0.39.

Abstract
Rh COT in the act: a Ni(0)-catalyzed [2+2+2+2] cycloaddition provides a high-yielding, scalable synthesis of the ligand dinaphtho[a,e]cyclooctatetraene (dnCOT). dnCOT complexation with Rh(I) gives [Rh(dnCOT)(MeCN)(2)]SbF(6), an excellent catalyst for [5+2] cycloadditions of vinylcyclopropanes and π-systems with impressive functional group compatibility.

Abstract
Taken to the molecular level, the concept of "tweezers" opens a rich and fascinating field at the convergence of molecular recognition, biomimetic chemistry and nanomachines. Composed of a spacer bridging two interaction sites, the behaviour of molecular tweezers is strongly influenced by the flexibility of their spacer. Operating through an "induced-fit" recognition mechanism, flexible molecular tweezers select the conformation(s) most appropriate for substrate binding. Their adaptability allows them to be used in a variety of binding modes and they have found applications in chirality signalling. Rigid spacers, on the contrary, display a limited number of binding states, which lead to selective and strong substrate binding following a "lock and key" model. Exquisite selectivity may be expressed with substrates as varied as C(60) , nanotubes and natural cofactors, and applications to molecular electronics and enzyme inhibition are emerging. At the crossroad between flexible and rigid spacers, stimulus-responsive molecular tweezers controlled by ionic, redox or light triggers belong to the realm of molecular machines, and, applied to molecular tweezing, open doors to the selective binding, transport and release of their cargo. Applications to controlled drug delivery are already appearing. The past 30 years have seen the birth of molecular tweezers; the next many years to come will surely see them blooming in exciting applications.

Abstract
A pair of molecular tweezers (syn-4) that consists of quinoline and pyrazine units fused to a bicyclic framework is presented. The tweezers were synthesised both as a racemic mixture (rac-4) and an enantiomerically pure form ((R,R,R,R)-4) starting from either racemic or enantiomerically pure bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,6-dione (3). Homochiral dimers were observed in the solid state for rac-4. The self-association of both rac-4 and (R,R,R,R)-4 was studied in solution. A weak self-association constant in CDCl(3) was estimated by (1)H NMR spectroscopic dilution titration experiments in both cases, following several proton resonances. For this purpose, a general normalisation model for the accurate determination of association constants from multiple datasets was developed. In contrast to the solid state, no diastereomeric discrimination was observed for rac-4 in solution.

Abstract
A series of polycyclic frameworks with fluorinated syn-facial quinoxaline sidewalls has been prepared as potential molecular tweezers for electron-rich guest compounds. Our synthetic route to the cyclooctadiene-derived scaffolds 16a-d takes advantage of the facile isolation of a novel spirocyclic precursor 9b with the crucial syn-orientation of its two alkene moieties. The crystal structure of 16c displays two features typical of a molecular tweezer: inclusion of a solvent molecule in the molecular cleft and self-association of the self-complementary scaffolds. Furthermore, host-guest NMR studies of compound 16c in solution show chemical exchange between the unbound and bound electron-rich guest, N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine.
