Abstract
An efficient method for the construction of sugar-derived chiral oxepanone-indole molecular hybrids is investigated. The reaction condition is optimized by monitoring the progress at various temperatures, with various solvents, and with different Lewis acid catalysts. Under optimized conditions, high stereoselectivity and efficiency are achieved in most of the formed cycloadducts. The accessibility of the strategy is evaluated by utilizing an array of carbohydrate-derived donor-acceptor cyclopropanes and variably substituted indole substrates. Additionally, quick access to the bridged indole-oxepanone framework is described by utilizing a diastereoselective (3+2) cycloaddition of aryl-substituted donor-acceptor cyclopropanes incorporated in a pyran ring.

Abstract
A simple and efficient strategy for the regio- and stereoselective synthesis of carbon-branched sugar derivatives is described. The successful implementation of Wittig rearrangement on substrates derived by Ferrier rearrangement of various glycals and 3-O-alkenyl glycals is studied extensively. A highly selective [1,2]- or [2,3]-Wittig rearrangement is revealed that provides a novel class of stereodefined 3-C-branched glycals and C-glycosides, which are otherwise difficult to obtain.

Abstract
AbstractAddition of a carbene to a glycal is the prominent method for the synthesis of 1,2-cyclopropyl carbohydrates. This incorporation of a cyclopropane into a carbohydrate scaffold enables divergent reactivity, with the two main classes being ring expansion and cleavage to 2-C-branched carbohydrates. A wide variety of products are obtained depending on the functionality attached to the cyclopropane (none or ester or halogens) and the promoter (Lewis acid, Brønsted acid, halophile or base) used in the reaction. This article reviews progress in the synthesis and reactions of 1,2-cyclopropyl carbohydrates since 2000 and discloses efforts by our group in the area.

Abstract
C-branched carbohydrates are of current interest for glycochemistry, are widely found in nature and serve as important subunits in many antibiotics, bacterial polysaccharides and macrolides. Among C-functionalized saccharides, 2-C-branched carbohydrates represent challenging structures for synthetic chemists, since in contrast to C-glycosides they are not easily accessible from glycosyl bromides or other simple precursors. In this perspective we want to summarize recent approaches to 2-C-branched carbohydrates over the past fifteen years. The two main strategies are based on ring-opening of 1,2-cyclopropanated carbohydrates by various reagents, as well as radical additions to glycals and further transformations, developed in our group. Both methods are characterized by high stereoselectivities and good yields and give access to a broad variety of functionalized carbohydrate 2-C-analogs.

Abstract
A stereoselective methodology was developed for the construction of C-spiro-glycosides in two steps involving bromonium ion activated solvolytic ring opening of sugar derived 1,2-cyclopropanecarboxylates followed by a one-pot dehydrohalogenation, intramolecular hetero-Michael addition (IHMA) and ester hydrolysis. The obtained spirocyclic lactols were further converted to enantiomerically pure spirolactones.
